I had originally planned to come out here by myself and my drone, to fly and scan the historical and cultural landmarks of the region, most of which are totally unknown to the outside world. When I showed David Finsterwalder some of the epic history that I'd be scanning, he bought a ticket immediately to tag along. He travels the world for his company realities.io, to capture and 3D scan these incredible locations for their VR app Realities (free on SteamVR for Oculus/Vive). Combining our efforts, we came out here to work on a huge new Armenia update for Realities, capturing and preserving these dying historical sites. We covered everything from a 1600 year old Church carved inside of a Mountain, to a 2000 year old Greco-Roman Temple, and even a 5000 year old Neolithic Stonehenge burial site. With us, we had 2 Sony A7rii, 2 DJI Mavics, 1 DJI Inspire, 2 360 cameras, and an ambisonic microphone. A camera nerd's heaven :) This video is an attempt to capture some of the jaw dropping nature we experienced in Armenia. Having to spend over 6 hrs scanning each location meant we really got appreciate the history that we were living in. 3D scanning with photogrammetry truly is an awesome way to do "tourism". A final note: the music is Lullaby by Aram Khachaturian performed by the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. I'd been itching to explore and fly, so I grabbed my backpack and went on a 4 hour walk around town. Copenhagen left such a strong impression on me. Extremely welcoming city, full of gluten-free, organic fed yuppies which felt like home :) The red tiled roofs, the gorgeous towers, environmental factories. The were even cemeteries with beautiful gardens that people regularly hang out at. I have to thank Julie Heyde and Joachim Ante for their extreme generosity, Jakob Balslev, Therkel Sand Therkelsen, Anatol Eli Kjær Knudsen, and Kent Ellegaard. As for the drone, I've felt that I've been getting much better at just shooting shots that I'll end up keeping, spending less time reviewing through hours of footage and trimming for the good bits. Having it fit into a backpack and launch discretely has been a godsend. From Scandinavia to the Baltics, I'm back to where I belong: the beach! Most of this trip has evolved around visiting friends I've made in the VR industry, even in such a small country like Croatia. Armando Matijević welcomed me to this home with open arms and drove me to the most breathtaking locations.For a few too many reasons, Croatia felt unnervingly familiar to where I grew up in Beirut. From rocky mountains on the coastline to a warm sea, the incredible historic relics, to the similar looking and the warm, passionate, and temperamental personalities of the people, I felt right at home. It really felt like a Blonde Lebanon. As for the drone, I actually had my first crash with the Mavic! Being too immersed in the gorgeous scenery, I slowly flew up and hit a tree branch. Surprisingly, the Mavic fell sideways a few feet and recovered, with virtually no damage. Incredible engineering from DJI. I had to get crafty for a few of the shots in the Roman palace. There were too many birds and humans to fly, so I help the drone and hand walked it through 1700 year old corridors. Truly spectacular what this thing can do. Turns out Vikings are really good in the water. I spent a good 3 hrs flying and shooting with the Mavic and by the end of it, I was totally mentally exhausted. The upkeep of making sure that I wasn't flying into a kite, or a kayak, or a tree, while still trying to keep the shots full of speed and variety was a fantastic exercise. I'm honestly so impressed at the Mavic Pro flying rock steady against 25 mph winds, 3ft above waves, keeping up with crazy fast kites. I don't think I'd pushed the drone as fast and hard as this until today. And again, everything was shot and edited through the DJI Go 4 app, which is a great way to have fast daily turnaround times like this. I'm not bothering with color correction on these daily posts but will do something more professional for my final wrap up video (also because I'm colorblind af). Excuse my profanities. Fortunately, on my way to Copenhagen to visit Julie Heyde, Iceland ended up being a layover which I opted to extend as long as possible.This was the result of my 18 hrs in the country. I foolishly booked an airbnb 30 miles away from the airport, got a cab to go to a scenic spot which ended up costing 175$, and got stranded trying to hop on a bus back to Rekyavik for a few hours by a dormant volcano.The nights last for 1.5 hrs, and the sunsets last for 5 hrs (which is a photographer's dream). The geography was truly something out of an alien movie.Anyways, I had no one to visit so I spent 80% of my time flying and shooting. Everything was shot on a Mavic Pro and edited on my iPhone in the airport.
