I thought "well I should probably record and share more music on YouTube every occasion I get" and so I went to the studio and set up microphone and camera and played my instrument. Also fun fact : this is actually the first guitar I ever learned on, about 25 years ago. I didn't expect anything to come from this spontaneous guitar improv, but I did have a strong enough melody to record it, and so, I am happy. Piano And Vocals Improv ** BLOOPERS!! ** Claudie Mackula 2022-11-03 | Be warned! This is the BLOOPERS edition of my latest video. I hesitated a lot about sharing it here, but it is kind of funny and a Behind the Scenes that is very real (with all its drama). XDPlaying an instrument and singing puts me in a peaceful zone, but sometimes (especially when overtired) there can be a lot of frustration around and between that. Here I was trying to improvise on the piano, and trying to do it quick in my busy schedule. I was tired, and had a difficult time to focus. It lead to some frustration. I find improvisation is something that you need to do almost daily. To keep your mind sharp about the sound of chords and keys, and being able to predict which chords/notes will sound good together or as progression of the whole piece. For this improvisation, I had to play for maybe 15 minutes before feeling familiar enough with the key and chords to go ahead and improvise a piece based around those notes. About 4 years ago I would improvise everyday for at least an hour, and hitting the wrong note is something that would more rarely happen. I would sometimes take a wild guess and press a note I wasn't sure about, but was able to "save the piece" by making it sound like a chord change or something not too unpleasant to the ear. I can start getting into the music, and then hitting a wrong note or chord snaps me out of it. It is also more difficult when there's little time in the day to dedicate to recording, and the energy isn't there. Not like when you sit for hours, loosing track of time. Nevertheless, I love and always will love improvising. ............................................................................................... Piano and Voices Improvisation - Claudie Mackula Claudie Mackula 2022-10-24 | Hi! :DIt's been a while since I shared something new here. This weekend I thought "what if I try to improvise something on the piano and also record it so I can share something new on YouTube?". So I did. I'll admit, it was more difficult than I thought it would be and took way more time than expected!I first recorded the piano, then while the melody and chords were fresh in my mind I improvised the main voice (top left), and then the harmony (bottom left). It was a bit challenging to try to not sing a wrong note that wouldn't harmonize with the piano. Luckily it was predictable enough that I was able to get lost in the music and (kind of) follow. XDI realize even more how much art can take time, especially all the little things like setting up the camera, recording, transferring files, editing...I miss having more time to dedicate to projects like these, and more complex than this. But I'm happy I did this little video project and was able to get it "finished" to a state where I can upload here. At the moment I keep busy with composing music for a video game, working, and releasing music on Spotify. I have a lineup of guitar pieces that are being released at the moment and I'll try to keep adding more. Skye Boat Song - Scottish Song | Claudie Mackula Cover Claudie Mackula 2022-02-08 | I've been wanting to try making a "vocals focused" cover of The Skye Boat song for a while, and when I had some free time I decided to go for it. I had in mind something mainly voices focused, but I ended up recording other instruments too. Irish tin whistle, bodhran, guitar.This piece has mainly live recorded vocals and instrument, with piano, harp, strings... played on my keyboard. I gave myself a goal to finish this song and publish it within 3 days, but it took a bit longer than that. Finally I decided to share it here. Each time I listened to it there were things I wanted to edit and change to make it better, but I'm just glad I'm sharing it instead of leaving it for a future project. In the end, I had a nice time working on this song. Piano Improvisation | Claudie Mackula Claudie Mackula 2022-01-28 | Here's a 8 min improvisation on the piano. Something that came up while I decided to let myself be pulled to the piano some late evening. I didn't feel like setting up to record, but I did anyways. I'm glad I pressed record because I was able to capture this flow of notes. I enjoy, on particularly difficult days, take a musical instrument and let the music tell a story. Sometimes It doesn't feel like a story, more like some atmospheres, emotions, a breeze through a quiet moment. It is funny how I spent less time creating and recording this piece, than finding an image to go with it, and the whole process of sharing music online. I will let myself by lazy and leave the title to "Improvisation" as I don't have yet a proper title idea. Emotional Piano - Standing Still as Seasons Pass Claudie Mackula 2021-12-24 | Again this came to me after I was working on another different project. It is not rare that a new melody idea comes during a "break" of working on something else. I feel like parts of this melody is familiar to me, maybe similar to my piano piece "Stillness".I don't have much to say about this piece, other than I practiced the first part at the beginning and then improvised a bit which you can hear on the recording here and there, and added some other parts. It was good, as always, to sit down and just play... I don't know how to classify this piece, as it is emotional, but not overly delicate. I made progresses on the music I'm composing for the video game, and then sat at the piano and came up with this melody... a bit sad, a bit hopeful, a bit Celtic, a bit Christmas. I just know I had in mind of composing something on the Christmas theme to share something special with you during this time. When I started this, my goal was to finish it within the same day. Dark Piano - Journal Entry | Piano Claudie Mackula 2021-09-13 | What? 8,000 subscribers? How did that happen?! Especially considering I have been uploading new songs here at the speed of a snail. I felt like uploading something new here but most of my recent songs are not in video format yet, or fully finished. But I found this piano improvisation/composition that I recorded about a year ago and never uploaded. I had called it "Journal Entry" because sometimes music for me is like opening up a journal and writing down my thoughts. I can't recall perfectly what I had in mind when I wrote this, but I do like to listen back to it. I'm thinking this could make a nice song if I get inspired to write some lyrics to it. True - Rosenfeld (Claudie Mackula Acoustic Cover) Claudie Mackula 2021-08-06 | Hello wonderful people. I have missed you!I realized my last upload was 4 months ago. It is a change compared to how I used to upload twice a week a few years ago. I have been continuing to compose and record, maybe a bit less than I used to, but there are always new melodies here and there. This is one of the recording projects I did a few months ago and hadn't shared it, mainly because I am more self-conscious of the quality of my lyrics singing. But today I kept feeling like uploading something new here and that was the last song I recorded. It's a cover of the song True by Rosenfeld. Someone shared this song with me once and I really liked the melody and the pace of the song. It kept playing in my mind and I thought, what if I tried to do a guitar/vocals cover of it? So I recorded the guitar, added vocals and harmony and then improvised some piano on it and added other elements. I'm still not 100% satisfied with it but it was a fun project and I might do more covers for fun in the future. How have you all been? Relaxing Guitar Improvisation - Held In The Moment | Claudie Mackula Claudie Mackula 2021-03-31 | This is a simple piece with few notes and few elements, but I think sometimes simplicity is good too, and gives a sens of space. It's both thing I think I needed at the moment I recorded this. I hope you can find a moment of tranquility through this piece too. I have been pretty busy all winter with little time to finish any compositions, but sometimes I'll sit with an instrument and let the music flow. This was one of those times when I was drawn to my nylon (classical) guitar, and a melody I had come up with a while ago came back and developed into a longer piece. I had actually filmed myself improvising the first time, but ran out of space and it stopped recording in the middle. I started again after clearing out files and it did the same thing. That's when I decided to combine the two versions together to make a longer piece. Emotional Piano & Vocals - Take Me To The Wind | Claudie Mackula Claudie Mackula 2021-02-14 | A new emotional/Ambient piece. I sat at the keyboard a few weeks ago and started improvising. I got lost in the keys and the notes and I've let it flow wherever it wanted to go. I recorded the first part, then stopped and explored ideas for the next section, recorded and improvised some more, then improvised some vocals. There is really nothing quite like getting lost in the music and being able to let it flow without hitting a dissonant key, trusting that I know what I'm doing haha. Traditional Irish Song - She Moved Through The Fair (Vocals and Irish Whistle) Claudie Mackula 2020-06-21 | This is my take on a traditional Irish Song. I had the first part of this song stuck in my head for a while and kept humming the melody. One night I sat down, grabbed the lyrics and recorded as I sang it. Even though I had heard this song a couple of times before, I discovered the lyrics as I was singing them. This was recorded quite spontaneously so the main voice is not perfect, but I feel there is something nice about spontaneous recordings. It's easy to get lost in it without overthinking. I wanted to keep it as natural possible, using my voice as the background drone, and playing Irish Tin Whistle in the musical break. It also has strings that I played on my keyboard. For those of you who don't know, I have been studio free since April. I spent the last few months giving my studio a make-over and this is one of the first recordings I do since then. It's been a while, and this was a bit of a song to get back into it. I have been recording a lot more acappella pieces but nothing completed yet. I'm also working on very special tracks for a very special project. It's good to record every day again. But I think for me it's the whistle that truly took off by itself and melodies came alive, blending in. Quinzhee Session (Music in a Snow Hut!) - Claudie Mackula CANADA Claudie Mackula 2020-03-16 | Little improvisation on Ukulele and Vocals (recorded on phone). I knew I had to make a video of doing music in my Quinzhee before the end of the winter. If you are curious, a Quinzhee is a snow hut that originates from Canada. As opposed to an Igloo, you don't build it with snow blocks, but you pile the snow and then dig the inside. This one was built about a month ago and is still very solid. The first time I made one was in Quebec and we spent the night in it at -20C temperature. It was an amazing experience!Maybe if I have time I'll try to record a session with proper mic next time. :) I hope that you'll enjoy the video and that you are not too much affected by whatever is happening right now in the world... I'm also home for three weeks before returning to work and that should give me plenty of time to share more creativity. Improvisation on the Piano - Pattern | Claudie Mackula Claudie Mackula 2019-11-08 | A very poor video quality of myself sitting at the piano at night improvising whatever is coming to my mind, and trying to turn mistakes into ornaments. I call this one "Pattern" because it's based around the feeling of being in a loop. How the world sometimes repeat mistakes from the past, how we have the tendency to do the things always the same ways, over and over again, every single day, every single years... How negative actions can have an effect on the future, creating a pattern of mistakes and problems that leads to more issues. It can seem hard to get out of the loop sometimes. Get out of our habits, of our comfort zone, of all we think we know. It is known that we learn from our mistakes, but how many times do we repeat the same mistakes again? I think it's maybe because the "known path" always seem safer to us, even though we know it might not have the most successful results. Anyways that's it for tonight's thoughts. Mandolin Jam - October Trees | Claudie Mackula Claudie Mackula 2019-10-13 | I don't play the mandolin often, but I was bored so picked it up and came up with a rhythm and notes that I had fun playing with. I decided to run to the forest and try to record something out of it. I used a tree as a tripod and as you can see towards the end of the video it has its disadvantages haha. I have moved to a new place closer to the city and started a job as a French language monitor in a school. It's taking a bit of my time, but I moved the studio with me and I'm sure I'll have time to compose, record and release new songs! Piano Improvisation - Drifting Like The Leaves Claudie Mackula 2019-09-18 | I'm back to my little studio after being away for about a month. It's nice to play the piano again despite that I'm quite busy with new things going on! Last night I had a dream that I was playing the piano but my hands got transformed and I couldn't play the notes anymore. Sad dream, but I still woke up with a song in my head. I don't think it was like this recording, but it definitely made me want to try to compose something new. This one is improvised parts here and there. Relaxing Flute & Vocals Improvisation (With Nature Sounds) | Faraway Island Claudie Mackula 2019-06-20 | Here is a 12 minutes relaxation/meditation flute improvisation with some vocals. I was improvising on a low flute and thought it would be nice to record it over a background pad, so I did. I also added percussion, harp and nature sounds. I find that there is something special about improvising and it leads to certain melodies that would have not happened with overthinking.I hope that you can find a moment of calm and peace in this soundtrack, or that it can transport you somewhere special. Maybe you will find it suitable for sleeping, meditation, reading, creating. Someone suggested it would also work as a documentary soundtrack. I started playing something based around 2-3 chords and decided to start filming to see where the idea would lead. As I was improvising, I came up with interesting chord progressions and melodies. The Woods of Wengaldar - Dark Folk Music | Claudie Mackula Claudie Mackula 2019-01-11 | I just really hope Wengaldar doesn't mean anything in another language. XDHere's a new track I did in the last couple of days. I was inspired to do something folk and dark. Similar to my other song The Chosen One.I couldn't come up with a title for this one until that one came up. Of course, Wengaldar and it's wood can be about whatever your imagination decides, but for me it made me think of a forest nobody has ever went into, that has a lot of rumors and dark legends linked to it. One day this character decides to enter it. The song brings you through the forest, maybe meeting a few fantasy creatures here. The dark legends were not entirely true and those woods hid a lot of beauty. I had a good time experimenting with different things for this one. It has a lot of real instruments as usual, but this time I recorded a bit of bouzouki towards the end. I had it in the studio for a while but didn't think I should try to record it. Anyways it ended up being fitting for this track. Instruments I play: Percussion (bodhran) - Flutes - Guitars - Vocals - BouzoukiIt's been a while I didn't enjoy working on a track as much, and I think it's mostly due to the fact that I didn't bother too much, had fun, and let my imagination run free (even if it resulted in some weird parts). "Falling" is mostly an improvisation but I won't call it as such since there are some parts in the first half that I removed and re-played. I find it a bit hard to drift away from the usual chord or chord progression where I usually go when I play. The more pieces you compose, the harder it is to create something completely new. Piano Music - Floating Through the Wind | Claudie Mackula Improvisation Claudie Mackula 2018-12-21 | Here's a new piece I share with you. I was sitting at the piano a few evening ago and came up with this little melody following a simple chord pattern. There are three notes that keeps repeating themselves throughout the whole piece and it's interesting to see what you can create while staying around the same notes. Music is truly a beautiful and fascinating thing and I'm always in awe of all the atmospheres and stories that can be created. Anyways, technical talk aside, it was hard for me to come up with a title or image for this one as it is for most of my pieces. Finally, I realized it made me think of something gently being carried by the wind, going up, then slowly down and up again. It can also be about trusting the wind and going with the flow even if it means to leave something behind. Life passes by, gently. And we dance to the gentle breeze. I hope you'll appreciate listening to this song and that it will bring you somewhere special. Piano Improvisation - Inside The Wave | Claudie Mackula Claudie Mackula 2018-12-18 | I have been working on a new fantasy piece for the last few days and often after a long composing and recording session I will play something on the piano. I decided to record it. It doesn't follow a specific pattern and jumps from one side to the other, but it's something that can be interesting to listen to... I guess. I have been feeling quite disoriented. Music helps me enormously but I had stopped composing everyday and it made me feel even more lost. I'm not sure if the issue is in not creating music, or I'm no longer creating music because of the issue. Anyways, I have decided I would do something about all this soon even if it means moving away from my studio. Either way, I thank all of you so so much for following me through all this and this far. It's a beautiful and encouraging journey and I hope that it will continue. You made something magical happen for me and gave meaning to what I did. Thank you. ^^Of course it's not the end. Fantasy Lullaby - The Magic of the Forest | Claudie Mackula Claudie Mackula 2018-12-09 | Here's a little lullaby that I hope will make you dream a bit. This evening I decided I would turn on the studio and see if I could compose something new. I improvised a part with the harp sound and added other instruments to it including some singing. The harp melody is a bit repetitive but I'm trying to be o.k with keeping things more simple (rather than not finishing anything, haha). That's also the "barely mixed, unmastered" version of the song. I'm thankful for music, composing it or hearing it. And dogs. Dogs are awesome too. Snowy Day! | November 2018 Claudie Mackula 2018-11-20 | I thought I would share this video with you. I was walking in the forest with my dogs, taking some pictures of the landscape, and decided I would also take a video. It really looks magical with the ice crystals and the light. Some snow was slowly melting and falling from the trees like stardust. I like the sound of a snowy landscape...I hope that you will enjoy the video and that I can share a piece of my forest with you in this way. Do you live in a place where there's snow? If not, did you ever experience it? As of myself, the last few winters have been tough and I wasn't able to enjoy the snow and cold to its fullest. Film Score - They Will Be Judged | Claudie Mackula Claudie Mackula 2018-11-03 | This is a track that I did for my first film scoring job ever. The short film "Hay Trials" was inspired from Samhain. The setting is dark ages, medieval. I experimented and did something different, inspired by what the movie felt to me. It's one of the few pieces on which I play the violin. I am not a pro, but for this piece I felt it worked well because it creates the feel of an old medieval instrument or uncertainty. I also played the lower string of my classical guitar with a bow to create some additional texture. It's sometimes amazing how each projects brings you to new musical landscapes. I also played flute, did vocals, guitar/mandolin. I enjoy film scoring a lot because I let the footage and story guide the music. Trying to find out how can the music better represents the story and the mood, and accompany the images. At the same time it can be a lot of pressure because there are infinite different ways to create a soundtrack for a film, but the path you chose has to be the best one. There are no specific guidance on what you should or should not do. I'm thankful I had the opportunity to work on this film. I will try to share it once it's released publicly. Note that the track is here edited so it is listenable on it's own, without the silent gaps or textural/background sections. State of Mind is a soundtrack based around guitar arpeggios, melodies, delays. It is combined with piano and other light orchestration to create a strong but dreamy atmosphere.
