EldertalkHere's a book I completely love and hope to reread next year. I am wildly enthusiastic about The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh because of his dedication to and love of painting! This book is so very inspiring to me, as an artist who admires what he did with the brief life that he had. It may not have been the life he imagined and wanted, it may have had many devastating disappointments, but to me, 100+ years later, his life was a beautiful story of devotion to art in many aspects. I feel very God-blessed to have read this book.

This one is very special to my heart, believe it or not... because I used to be a Bigfoot researcher and I've been wanting to buy the Missing 411 books for years, but couldn't afford to until now. Good thing I didn't buy them before because most of my books burned in the 2020 forest fire that ate my home. I'm finally in a house again and am buying some of the books I lost, and some that are new to me.
I just bought all the published books of David Paulides... two are about Bigfoot and the rest are about his Missing 411 research. I read the two Bigfoot books about 15 years ago and reviewed them on a Bigfoot blog site I own. (The blog is no longer being updated.) I've moved on from Bigfoot research, for the most part, but who knows, I could still go back to it if I wanted to. I probably won't.
Mr. Paulides is a former law enforcement officer who uses police investigative skills to research missing persons cases. The cases he looks into are specifically about unusual circumstances. If you watch his YouTube channel you'll soon learn what he considers a Missing 411 case. You can find that YouTube channel here: @canammissingproject
Where to buy the books: nabigfootsearch.com Do NOT buy them at Amazon - those are sold by resellers at a higher cost.

I think the psalm is saying - take it or leave it, but there are consequences to your decision, or benefits. We all get to make choices about how we live.
My thanks to @gdrew my artist friend, for the term, "illustrated notes."
#booktuber #bible #psalm1
This Illustrating Bible was purchased at Dayspring.com not long after the big forest fire devoured the Bible I originally drew pictures in. The book is big and heavy! During the three years I lived in the travel trailer I didn't use this much because the size of it wasn't convenient for use in a trailer. But now I have a place for it.
This is a NIV Bible. New International Version. This is not one of the versions I usually use but it was the only translation I could find for this Illustrating Bible at the time. When I lived in North Idaho, some of my friends would jokingly call NIV the North Idaho Version. I still think of it that way. I miss living in Idaho soooo much. I had great friends there. Wonderful people!
The colors were applied with Tombow markers. The black pens used: Zebra Millipen and Uniball. The tabs came from biblesandcoffee.com/collections/bibletabs The Bible is from dayspring.com .......................................................................

Just the length of it. The digressions! The Battle of Waterloo! Too many details!
However, Les Misérables is impressive. Well-written of course. (Victor Hugo) . . . I'm actually taking a break from reading this novel this month. There's so much BOOK here I realized I was burnt out on reading it and needed a break. I decided to read something lighthearted instead... so I chose Perestroika in Paris by Jane Smiley, which may have been a mistake.

It was a great book, well-written, but the flood and over 2000 tragic deaths is not something one could "enjoy." I do "appreciate" the book as I think dam safety is a topic we all should be aware of, and I'm glad I read the book. The flood is counted as one of the major disasters in the history of the United States.

Fashion........ I have to mention I was wearing a Hilo Hattie (brand) caftan. I am not being paid for an endorsement!! I bought it because I thought I was going on a vacation to Hawaii. I changed my mind, but I still sometimes wear the clothes. I've never been to Hawaii but I have been inside the Statue of Liberty and climbed to the top. It all works out in the end.
I'm pretty excited and /stressed/ because I'm starting and sponsoring a readalong for the first time ever, and doing a book giveaway for the first time as well. I hope this will be the first of many readalongs and book giveaways.
Bible Verse of the Month "Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord; it is fitting for the pure to praise him.” – (Psalm 33:1 NLT)Greatroom Tour // new rug, curtains and cabinet this month!Eldertalk2024-07-26 | I am finally ready to show you my greatroom (as they call it on the house plan) ... it is small like the rest of my house.. but large enough for me... in fact, I'd say it is perfect for me, and I like the cabin-like feel of having a small home. I guess my biggest problem with it is that I'm likely to make it too crowded with furnishings... I have to be very careful about what I allow in.
This month I made some improvements with new curtain rods, curtains, and a large rug, and a new kitchen cabinet I put together myself. It is starting to look very home-like in here. I still need a dining table, chairs, and a recliner or two. I don't think there will be room for a sofa. There is no TV. I've just been watching TV on my computer using Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Paramount Plus. I like to watch reality TV shows mainly including Masterchef, various real estate shows like House Hunters, and Survivor. I'm hoping also to get a big TV again, like the one I had before the forest fire that destroyed my previous home. Well, it is all in a state of change so if I'm able to get better furniture I might make another greatroom video to show you the improvements.
Did you notice that my ottoman is a packing bin with a pillow on top? Maybe I'll get a better one someday... but I'm happy to just have a nice home to read in, and a place to rest and be comfortable while I read. It is so much better than living in a travel trailer, but we do what we must and the travel trailer for three years was a great blessing under the circumstances.
Getting furniture out here in the boonies (middle of a forest) isn't as easy as it sounds, but I'm sure it will all come together in time. My efforts to get a dining table and chairs have been fruitless, but my brother might bring me one that used to belong to my mother, years ago.
Bible Verse of the Month "Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord; it is fitting for the pure to praise him.” – (Psalm 33:1 NLT)Book Acquisitions // aka: book haulEldertalk2024-07-09 | If you can't go buy a book, the next best thing is to look at someone else's books, right? Well, here's a look at some books I recently received in boxes delivered to my porch. Actually, the Christian books get delivered to the local post office and the others get put on my porch. There are no local bookstores so I think I save a lot of money by acquiring books online. They would cost a lot more if I went to Barnes & Noble.

Bible Verse of the Month "Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord; it is fitting for the pure to praise him.” – (Psalm 33:1 NLT)On the MountainEldertalk2024-07-05 | The temps here in the valley are 100 degrees (plus) this week but our power company had some kind of equipment failure on Wednesday. They said the power would be back on later that day, then switched it to 10 am on July 4 (on our holiday of all days) and then changed it to the early afternoon then the late afternoon.
I met with some other ladies in the town for a women's Bible study this morning, then when I got home there was still no electricity - so I decided if they weren't going to turn on the power until 5, I'd find something else to do besides staying in an overheated house! I have a nice van with air conditioning so I decided to drive north to Oregon over the mountain. It is a one hour drive each way. Of course I listened to an audiobook as I was driving (the one about spending the winter in the Bitterroot Mountains of North Idaho).
I went to Cave Junction, Oregon. Here's what they have that my little town doesn't have: a big supermarket, lots of restaurants, coffee places for mochas and lattes etc., fast food restaurants (I stopped at Dairy Queen for a sandwich)... and gas that is a lot less expensive than in California... with full service (meaning, a man that will pump it for me.) Also Oregon has no sales tax so that makes it an attractive journey for anyone from CA who wants to buy things.
I spent a few hours there. The used bookstore that used to be there is gone. The Chinese restaurant I used to go to a lot is gone... it was completely torn down!
Anyhow, I found a place to stop on the way home and decided to film this brief video so you too can look at burned trees. It will probably take about 30 years for our forests to recover from the fire. I wish they'd cut down all the burned trees, but they don't. They just let them stand and rot in place. The only trees they cut down were the ones that might have fallen on the roadways.
This evening it is July 4 and I hear someone outside playing with fireworks which is absolutely forbidden in the National Forest. They are probably doing it on private property but still, it distresses most of us who live here. So dangerous!!
AUDIOBOOK I LISTENED TO AS I TRAVELED Indian Creek Chronicles: A Winter in the Bitterroot Wilderness, by Pete Fromm
The man who wrote the memoir was, at that time, a college student in Montana (originally from Wisconsin) who was trying to be a mountain man. He took a job working for the Department of Fish and Game. He had to live in a tent in the Bitterroot Mountains for seven months, all winter, alone, to keep an eye on Indian Creek to make sure the water didn't freeze, as salmon were being spawned there. His compensation? He was paid 200 dollars per month for seven months! How crazy is that? Only 200 a month for giving up everything.......... including his college scholarship. Well, he learned a lot from the adventure, I'm sure, and had something to write a memoir about. This was a priceless experience.

Well, I have my Kindle ready to go, and my phone, and a battery powered reading light. I should be able to enjoy the evening even without power. I have my wifi connected to my Jackery power station, and plan to use that connection to upload this video. Life's good.

My thoughts were focused, for the most part, on the June on the Range event created by @michaelk.vaughan8617
This video has serious production issues! The picture jerks back and forth a few times - and I used the "drop to black" transition to try to cover some of those issues. Sorry if it seems like a crazy editing job, but I wasn't going to re-film the entire thing because of some camera-jerks so I just edited it to pieces instead. I'll try to avoid this next time. Perhaps I need a new filming method!?
The June on the Range event includes reading books by Louis L'Amour and Zane Grey, plus two other Western novels of the reader's choice. I ended up reading six Westerns because I apparently like them so much, and I wanted to be sure to get to two that were highly recommended.

It starts in August 2024.
Co-host - Erion @BookZealots
There are twelve books and the plan is to read them in the order of publication from 1968 through 2019.
All books are scheduled for either one or two months. Books over 500 pages are scheduled for two months.
There is a scheduled break-month (or two) between every few volumes. This will give people a rest from McCullough or give slow readers an opportunity to catch up.
The schedule is posted as a PDF download on my blog: lindajomartin.com

My power works best in weakness.” – (2 Corinthians 12:8 NLT)Home Sweet Home :: Im Back Already!Eldertalk2024-06-20 | Thanks so much to everyone who prayed for my health and also to those who prayed for my travel safety! I had a great trip to Medford and back. Imagine driving 2+1/2 hours to get there. It took an hour to get over the mountain and out of this valley, then another hour to get to Grant's Pass, then a half-hour to get to the hair salon in Medford!
I had the sweetest hair stylist with many years of experience, and she did a great professional job. At the end she kept saying, "There, you have a STYLE now." So apparently "Dutch Boy" isn't a style. Or at least not one anyone would want? I like the new style better, for sure. I was amused by noticing that all the hair stylists had long hair! But they made money cutting everyone else's hair. Hmmm.
The doctor was a thin small woman only slightly younger than me. She had no problem identifying my issue, and she looked around for other possible issues on my skin. I appreciated that. I was told to return in a year, and to go home and wait for the bill as Medicare will pay only 80% of it and they didn't accept my backup insurance. I'm okay with that. It was a nice clean and professional clinic. In the video I said something was going to turn red, scab over, then fall off... it is the scab that will fall off, not my nose. I'm so grateful. So far so good. God is good.
I'm so excited about my new van tires! I got them from Les Schwab. Best quality. While waiting I got to talk to two very nice people. First Lisa. When she left I noticed her wearing a cross and let her know I'm a Christian too and that I hope we'll see each other again in heaven when we get there. Then a man sat down, another Christian! When I left we exchanged names and he said his wife is also named Linda. And I said one of my best friends was named Dennis like him. Sorry to say, my Dennis friend departed this life in 2021, a thing of great sadness for me.

Bible Verse of the Month "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” – (2 Corinthians 12:8 NLT)An Old Wish List, My Art Studio, and Bookish PursuitsEldertalk2024-06-18 | Today's video is a mid-month ramble with an announcement (fair warning so as not to shock anyone) about my impending haircut. I found an old pink wish list while sorting through a box of paper clutter, and shared that with you in this video. It was fun for me to see what I wanted about fifteen years ago, and to see what I got and what I didn't get. Yet.
One of those things was an art studio. I tried to make one last year in my shed but I never felt it was truly accessible because the shed isn't climate control friendly (no electricity.) So I have a better art studio in what was supposed to be the master bedroom for this new house. Love it. So this video has a small tour of the art studio which I call my day room.
Next of course I did a brief review of bookish things... the books I'm now reading and the books I've already finished during this month of June '24. Yes, I apparently almost always feel I have to mention books.

Bible Verse of the Month "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” – (2 Corinthians 12:8 NLT)May 2024 Reading RetrospectiveEldertalk2024-06-05 | This is my May 2024 reading retrospective video. In other words, it is a wrap-up! I admit I like to play with the language and I try to be original. Sometimes I think there's not enough originality and creativity in Booktube. We all need to try to be unique. But the main thing is - we want to know what our fellow Booktubers are reading! So this video explains what I read during May and it also includes a section at the end that lists everything I read during January through April 2024.
Bible Verse of the Month "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” – (2 Corinthians 12:8 NLT)25 Christian Classic Books & Beautiful on the MountainEldertalk2024-05-21 | I've been inspired to read more classic Christian literature by a book I ordered from Christianbook-Com, "25 Books Every Christian Should Read." You know me, I just had to know which books they recommended and why. Some of these books I'd never heard of before! I plan to try to read them all. Their book contains a brief synopsis of each book along with an explanation of why they believe it is important and life transforming. There are excerpts and study guide questions, and more. For me it is a fun book to read; I'm enjoying it.
The books were chosen by readers who are both Catholic and Protestant (various denominations) and I even noticed one of the books is a Quaker classic, which interests me because some of my ancestors were Quakers who came to North America in the 1600's because of persecution in England. Back then Quakers were more closely aligned with the Bible than they are now, for the most part, as I understand it. My 6x Great Grandfather's Bible was considered a precious family heirloom. I don't know who has it now.
I'm wondering if anyone else would like to read these classics with me. I've read only three of them so far. We could start a Goodreads group to discuss them, or discuss them on Faith's new theology discord group if she's okay with that.

I also mentioned that Deirdre is discussing Mere Christianity on her channel.

"Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” – Jesus (John 17:17)Books I Finished Reading During March 2024 - aka: Wrap-up!Eldertalk2024-04-06 | Hello everyone.......... wrapping it all up for March 2024, here's my list of books I finished reading during that month. I always count books in the month I finish reading them, regardless of when I started.
In this video I show five books that qualified to be added to my USA Roadtrip Reading Adventure map. It is great fun to locate appropriate books and travel vicariously through literature.
Four of the books were physical copies and three were audiobooks. One was a Kindle version. I read the audiobooks much faster than the others, but I don't like to read much nonfiction that way. For nonfiction I much prefer a hardback or paperback.

"Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” – Jesus (John 17:17)Surprise Book Mail from Macmillan Publishers!Eldertalk2024-03-26 | I went to the post office today to pick up my mail and all I got was one of those yellow slips telling me I had a package to pick up at the main desk. I got in line behind two people I know somewhat (small town acquaintances) and then got a big surprise when the postmaster handed me a white envelope from Macmillan Publishers! I had no idea why - unless maybe it was a Goodreads Giveaway book that I didn't get an email about (it has happened in the past.) But NO, it wasn't a Goodreads Giveaway book. I have checked my Goodreads account and confirmed that was not the source of this book surprise.
Anyhow, thank you to Celadon Books (division of Macmillan) and to Susan Lieu, for trusting me with a copy of your book. You must know how much I love to read and review memoirs! I do tend to review every book I read these days, over at Goodreads, my home-away-from-YouTube.

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13Sometimes Less is More... re: video length! ...and incidentally, comment exchanging!Eldertalk2024-03-16 | I'd like to discuss video length. Who here thinks it is a good idea to post videos that are so long that most people won't watch them? I think a lot of people are like me and have limited time on their hands to sit and listen to Booktube videos.
My point is that I want to get to know you all better but I don't have time to watch you discuss books for 25 minutes or 30 minutes or more. Maybe it is just me, but my attention span lags unless I'm extremely invested in the topic, or if I have a friendship with the Booktuber I'm listening to.
The longer the video, the less likely I am to click on it and watch, and lately I've had to stop videos halfway when I realized I was watching a 25-45 minute video and just couldn't go on!
My time is pretty valuable. We each have a limited amount and I have other things to do: reading, gardening, making my own videos, painting, etc.
I just want to let a lot of people know that I don't have time to watch their lengthy videos, and it might be better to post short ones that more people would have time to watch. That would give me a chance to get to know you better, and believe me when I say I very much want to get to know you better and establish a friendship of some kind. That's the most important part of Booktube, for me. I need to know and trust the people I'm getting book recommendations from.
If anyone here is worried about their "watch time" really, don't bother. Booktube is a hobby and very few VERY FEW Booktubers will ever make money at it. I don't even know if anyone has ads enabled on their videos because I pay for the Premium YouTube account and no longer see ads of any kind on this site. What a great blessing, well worth the money!

"I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13A Yardwork VlogEldertalk2024-03-12 | Please read: I've promised myself to go outside to work in my yard every sunny day this year, so long as I'm healthy enough to do it. This vlog shows one of the worst sections of my yard. I'm focusing on it right now as there's so much to do there and I want to get a handle on it before spring growth makes it 10x worse than it already is.
You may already know my daughter and her family were living on this property for a few years until last summer. Their travel trailer was in front of this "Crabapple Paradise" and their RV was parked next to it, so I never did anything about maintaining their side of the yard. That is why this section has never been trimmed back since before I bought the property, and really, when I bought it this section didn't look any better than it does now. It has always been a jungle!
At 5:00 in the video you can see the front yard fence. When I bought the property that fence was completely covered with blackberry brambles, so there's hope to get the blackberries cut back. They are so ubiquitous here and they like to spread aggressively and take over. I worked on the front fence and so did my daughter, her spouse, gardeners I hired and even the pastor that lives nearby. So getting that controlled was a long term group effort over the last three years. I will still be working on it this year but I've also planted flower bulbs along the front fence line and I hope to have some of them blossoming this summer.
Right now I can't afford to hire anyone to help me with this yard. I have been praying for the Lord's help in all matters pertaining to the landscaping of this property. Please pray with me that I'll have the strength and health to keep going and to work out there every sunny day this year. It would be so good for me to get some gardening exercise too. I hear that is a good source of exercise for seniors! Thank you for your prayers!
God bless you... and may the blackberry brambles never inundate your yard with more thorny vines than you ever wanted to deal with. :)

Sounds a little morbid I guess but this video should explain my focus on numbers of books read each month.

I wouldn't normally be making a video in the HOT afternoon.. but this morning was dominated with a visit from the contractors and others, including the landscapers who did quite a bit of impressive work in the yard. I'm publishing my Monday video on Tuesday morning, which sounds about right to me. That way I can spend the cool evening hours in my trailer editing and preparing the video.

I now have a place to make videos where I won't have to stumble over lights and tripods. This shed will be my art studio as well as a place to make videos - and for the first time since the fire in 2020 I'll be able to take all my books out of boxes and put them on shelves and look at them. Yay! I can't tell you how excited I am about this.
I've already started moving things from my travel trailer (home) into the shed. I've really barely scratched the surface. I've been so crowded in here it has been driving me crazy. I don't function well in clutter, and it was getting past my comfort zone. There's a limit to what one can fit into a 30' trailer! I also have things stored in my van and in the cargo trailer and in my daughter's bus. Moving all these things will take days and days.
Thanking God primarily for this gift of a new creativity shed. But I'm also thanking the builders at The Shed Guys in Central Point, Oregon, especially Dave Mortimore who was very patient with all my design changes, and Brayden Strange and Adam Morningstar, the builders you can see in this video. It took them four days to build this shed. theshedguys.com

My friend (who is slightly older than I am) says NO because she thinks I'm not "elderly" until I'm 80 - but I live in a town dominated by a tribe of Native Americans who dearly respect their Elders... and even though I'm not a tribal member I'm also considered an Elder here... because I'm over 65. In fact, I'm 70 this year - almost 71 - and am so grateful and happy to be a septuagenarian now, considering the alternative. So many didn't make it this far. Am I the lucky one?

Have a blessed and wonderful day!Winter Reading Update :: books finished from 1/1/23 - 2/28/23 briefly describedEldertalk2023-03-01 | Hello everyone - I'd like to tell you how happy it makes me feel to be reading books these days! Even with a foot of snow outside I'm gratefully warm in my protective travel trailer reading some amazing literature including classics, nonfiction, and memoirs. I've had a couple good reading months. My goal is to read eight books monthly as that will help me get to my annual goal of 104 books.
You may wonder why I want to read 104 books. It is because the world is full of beautiful literature and I want to read as much as possible before I can't read at all anymore. My mother was still reading at age 85, right before she left this world behind. I have another 15 years before I get that old. I want to make the most of it.
PAGE COUNTS January - 3156 February - 2618 Goal - have a higher average page count than 2022 (272 pages average) and a higher overall page count (31095) - so far, I don't see much improvement. Well, a little: (320 avg. page count, and 34644 if I continue at this pace.) I just like challenging myself... personal goals only.
