Thanks For Watching! The Twisted Secret of Area X | Annihilation TrilogyQuinns Ideas2023-04-07 | The Southern Reach is a science fiction trilogy by author Jeff VanderMeer, some weeks ago I released a video covering the first book in the series, Annihilation. Annihilation, which was adapted into a film in 2018, introduces to us the mystery of Area X. Though the first book excellently sets the stage for one of the most authentic cosmic horror tales since HP Lovecraft, the mysteries of the series really unfold in the following two books, Authority, and Acceptance. Each of the books were released in 2014 just months apart from each other. Now that I've finished the entire trilogy my recommendation is to read them as a single book, as the three together tell a complete story. These three books definitely make up one of the most mind bending trilogies that I've read in the last few years. In this video we will journey beyond the border into the mind breaking corridor of Area X.
What is the secret of Area X, why is it here, what does it want? What is the otherworldly creature known as the “Crawler” who etched its eerie sermon along the walls of the tunnel referred to as the tower? What role did the lighthouse keeper play in all these strange events, and what are the motives of the mysterious organizations the Seance and Science Brigade, and the Southern Reach? This series is one of the most interesting cosmic horror stories that I’ve read, it maintains its mystery but provides satisfying answers to many of the primary questions, for those that look hard enough. In my opinion this Trilogy can be seen almost as a retelling of HP Lovecraft’s the color out of space, essentially it is a first contact story, and like the color out of space, it points out that our definition of life might be quite limited. Given the vastness of the universe, who knows what strange forms may come into existence, and who can say how contact with life on earth would affect said entities, and what effect they may have on us.
For reasons that remain obscure it all began, at least from the perspective of earth, along the forgotten shore, a shore that had long been known to conjure twisted stories among its inhabitants; there were plenty of eerie whispers about things seen and heard. Something happened there 30 years prior to the events of Annihilation, the "Event", in present day the place is devoid of human life and nature has reclaimed it, it is now Area X. This video will contain major spoilers for the southern reach trilogy so if you haven’t read them and spoilers are a thing you care about, I suggest you pause this video and come back to it after you've read the series. Otherwise continue forward.
Thanks For Watching! Is God A Virus? | EchopraxiaQuinns Ideas2023-03-30 | Echopraxia is a book set in one of the most interesting sci-fi universes that I have covered on this channel. It is technically a sequel to Blindsight, but it is not necessary that you read Blindsight to understand Echopraxia. Echopraxia is set in the late 21 century. About 14 years after man’s first contact with alien life.
This book brings up one of the most interesting concepts I’ve ever encountered in any sci-fi book ever. And that is the concept of the “Digital Universe” and God as a Virus. Now this is a concept that comes from the field of digital physics, which keep in mind is all theoretical. It is based on the premise that the universe is pure mathematics at its base, every event that occurs can be thought of as a kind of computation. This could mean that the universe is a simulation, but that is not necessary for the idea to work.
The universe could itself be a giant computer, physics would be its software and matter, its hardware. Every movement of an electron would be a calculation in that vast supercomputer. In some models of the Digital Universe, matter itself is merely an instantiation of numbers.
Thanks For Watching! When The Sun Dies Early | Wandering EarthQuinns Ideas2023-02-04 | This story takes place approximately 400 hundred years in our future. “The Coalition” controls the world. Earth rotation has been stopped. Hundreds of years ago they discovered the sun would expand far sooner than expected. Generational spaceships would not work to house all of humanity. They decided to move the earth elsewhere using giant engines commonly referred to as mountains and peaks, they are powered through nuclear fusion, and the largest are up to 11,000 meters tall (about 7 miles high). The migration process will take 2,500 years approx. 100 human generation will pass over the course of that time.
Thanks For Watching! The Horror of The Crawler | AnnihilationQuinns Ideas2023-02-01 | Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer is one of my favorite sci-fi books ever! It's basically a modern Lovecraft story. The book details the account of "the biologist" who is a member of a group on an expedition into the mysterious "Area X" a realm governed by something incomprehensible.
Thanks For Watching! The Master Races of the Universe | Three Body Problem SeriesQuinns Ideas2023-01-22 | I’ve been covering the Three Body Problem book series on this channel for quite some time now. This video will contain major spoilers for Cixin Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past Trilogy. The cosmos and its inhabitants throughout most of the series remains mysterious, but eventually more about the nature of the universe and those who live it is revealed, much of what we learn only adds to the cosmic dread at already permeates much of the series. The Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy by Cixin Liu paints a picture of cosmic civilization that is dark, lonely, and terrifying. A universe where infant civilizations on young worlds might call out into the darkness seeking reprieve from the seemingly endless cosmic loneliness only to find that they have revealed themselves to a hunter in the dark, whose weapon is now squarely focused upon them. This is the reality of life within the dark forest, but there are some who master this universe. In this video we will discuss the various civilizations and groups known to inhabit Cixin’s Liu’s universe.

Humankind only succeeds in thwarting them when they reveal the location of both Trisolaris and the Earth to the greater universe. Because of the “Dark forest” state of the cosmos, the Trisolaris star system was destroyed, and earth’s sometime later. After escaping the dimension strike which destroyed the sun and the earth, Cheng Xin heads to the one place where she hopes to find human life. Tianming’s Star, DX3906.

Quinn's Comics: Quinnhoward.net/theliebehindthestarThe Most Terrifying Aliens in Sci-Fi History | Quinns IdeasQuinns Ideas2022-10-24 | Though the giant bodies in outer space that we would eventually call galaxies were first noticed by French astronomer Charles Messier in the 17th Century, Edwin Hubble, in 1923, was the first to realize what they actually were. It turned out that there were countless galaxies in our universe, made up of billions upon billions of stars and trillions of planets. It did not take humans long at all to do what we do best, imagine. If there were trillions of planets throughout the vastness of space. Could there be another world like ours, with sentient beings like us? From that point onward we began to see aliens everywhere.
It has been said that the oldest fear is the fear of the unknown. The fear of the unknown stands at the root of some of our greatest horror stories. Infamous but brilliant writer HP Lovecraft has influenced the entire horror genre, his work speaks because it reflects his genuine fear of the unknown and of the other. The fear of the other is at the root of our fear of aliens. Aliens are scary because we don’t know them, we cannot predict their behavior, they could be cruel, they could see us as bugs beneath them, they could enslave us, steal our world's resources, and then discard us. They could in essence do to us what we do to each other, or perhaps even worse. Infinite terrors await within the unknown. We peer into the darkness of space and yet we do not know what might be peering back or what it might be capable of.

In this era humanity is very technologically advanced and it seems the universe is theirs to uncover. That is until they discover that a nearby civilization has been devastated and by some other alien race. Thanks For Watching! The Future Humans | LowQuinns Ideas2022-09-21 | In Rick Remender’s Low, almost all of the future humans have migrated underwater and now all live in dome cities, due to the fact that the surface had become too hot for normal human habitation. This is due to the fact that the story is set billions of years in our future and the sun has expanded to a red giant. The protagonist of our story, Stel Caine, lives in the Dome City of Salus, with her husband and children. Using robotic probes she desperately searches for a new planet that can support human life. The Dome Cities themselves are crumbling. The filtration systems which keep them oxygenated are becoming continuously less efficient. The citizens of all the known cities know that they do not have long before none of the cities can support life.
Thanks For Watching! The Biology of The Trisolarans | Three Body Problem SeriesQuinns Ideas2022-09-13 | Just a heads up, this video will have spoilers for all three of Cixin Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s past book and also for the spinoff novel Redemption of Time by Baoshu. This series details the story of mankind after they discover that there is a race of alien beings 4 lightyears away from our solar system that seek to destroy humanity and inhabit the earth. It will take about 400 years for the aliens to reach earth but in the meantime the cripple technological progress on earth so that humans could not advance enough to match them. Humanity was nearly fully destroyed in its struggle against this technologically superior alien race. The great war between humanity and the Trisolarans drives the main narrative of the series and yet we never see the appearance of the Trisolarans described in the original trilogy, it’s not until the spinoff that we finally get a glimpse of what they actually look like. However we do receive information in the first book about their biology and their life cycle.

Thanks For Watching! The Wrong Kind of Evolution | BlindsightQuinns Ideas2022-09-03 | The technical term for modern humans is Homo Sapiens Sapiens, we are the current iteration of a genus going back two million years. There were however, obviously many species of humans who did not go on. Who for whatever reason could not adapt to their environments well enough to carry on their DNA. Examples include, Homo Neanderthalensis, Homo Erectus, and Homo Floresiensis. In the novel, Blindsight, Peter Watts, merely adds an additional species to that list, they evolved in a different way, the wrong way.
This particular species of human lacked the ability to synthesize the protein, protocadherin - Y, which other species of humans produced naturally. Their brains and bodies were different as well, they were smarter, stronger, and faster than other humans. And in the earlier eras of humanity, when myth and legend were still being formed they preyed upon us in the night. Ancient humanity was only able to drive them to extinction when they discovered that the creatures had an aversion to right angles. This trait had developed naturally through some fluke of genetics. It was seemingly neutral at first as right angles do not form very often in nature. But once this fact was revealed to humanity, they drove them back into the darkness, seemingly forever. Until many eons later science brought them back.
Thanks For Watching! The Deadliest Weapon in The Universe | Three Body Problem SeriesQuinns Ideas2022-09-02 | Scientists believe that at some point during human history, the population had been reduced to just ̶1̶0̶0̶0̶ 10,000 reproductive adults. In the year 70,000 BC humans almost entirely vanished from the face of the planet itself. According to scientists, near extinction has occurred at least three times over the course of humanity's 100,000 year history. The dilution of mankind to so few humans magnifies the impact of all human actions. In Cixin Liu's Remembrance of Earth’s Past Trilogy humanity is tested many times, but there is no single greater near extinction event than the Singer’s dimension strike.
We’ve discussed the crisis era, the deterrence era, the post deterrence era, In this video will discuss the broadcast era, the era directly following the crew of gravity and blue space’s decision to activate the universal broadcast system, freeing the human race from Trisolaran suppression, while inadvertently revealing the location of the Earth to the inhabitants of the Dark Forest. Obviously this video will have spoilers! My favorite thing about the Dune series is how it points out the dramatic shifts that take place in the collected human unconscious over millennia. Like the evolution of how "The Worm" is viewed. In the first book the worm represents an unstoppable force of nature. The worm is Arrakis, Arrakis is the worm. It is the living and physical embodiment of the desert itself. In Freman culture the worm is God because he keeps the desert for his people. Shai Hulud guards the entrance into their "secret realm". The worm is exalted in Fremen society, enormous, deadly, rageful yet protective, and graceful. All of this changes after book 4, “God Emperor of Dune. Paul Atreides' son, Leto II, took the image of the worm and twisted it.

Thanks For Watching! The Devastating Destruction of the Human Race | The Killing StarQuinns Ideas2022-07-19 | So, I think I uncovered a treasure. The Killing Star by Charles Pellegrino and George Zebrowski was originally published 1995 and it paints a dark and seemingly plausible depiction of humanity’s potential future. This book is about several things genetic engineering and cloning, it’s about the destructive power of fanaticism, It’s about the over confidence and hubris of humanity, and that gets really hammered home in this book with all it’s references to the titanic, which has for a very long time been thought of as one of the greatest symbols of human hubris, it’s about AI, and when it goes to far, it’s about our over dependence on technology, it’s about humanity’s indefinite survival outside of earth, and most importantly, it’s about the devastating annihilation of the vast majority of the human race.

Thanks For Watching!Who Created The Void & What Lies Beyond It? | The Void TrilogyQuinns Ideas2022-07-07 | Today we’re gonna talk about the Void Trilogy which is part of the Commonwealth Saga by Peter F Hamilton. I really like the Commonwealth Saga for a few reasons, for one, I’m generally a sucker for space operas. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of human colonization of space and what mysteries we could encounter there, you can probably tell that from looking at my channel. I also love the way the series pays homage to classic authors like Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, and even Larry Niven. The Void Trilogy is particularly awesome because it starts off with a great mystery, who constructed the void, why, and what is inside of it? Now before we go any further I must warn you, if you have not read the Commonwealth Saga don’t watch this video if you care about spoilers because I will be discussing some of the major plot developments.
Thanks For Watching!Dune: Why Create A God?Quinns Ideas2022-07-01 | In this video we will talk about the Purpose of “God” within the context of the Dune Saga. In a sense the Dune Saga is all about the concept of Godhood. In the first book we see the apotheosis of Paul Atreides, as he uses the path laid out for him by the Bene Gesserit Missionaria Protectiva, to convince the Fremen that he is their prophesied savior. Wielding the power of the Fremen Paul is able to avenge house Atreides and unseat the emperor of the known universe. But in doing so he also entangled the throne to a fanatical religion, his Godhood would be invoked by others who would go on to commit terrible atrocities in his name. The problem with this is that interpretation of God’s will cannot be easily monopolized. A Government entangled with religion risks losing control over the very populace its seeks to subjugate, when that populace’s view of god shifts out of line with the standard established.
Thanks For Watching! Why is Space Malicious? | Three Body Problem SeriesQuinns Ideas2022-06-24 | Warning, this video has spoilers. Cixin Liu's Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy describes the journey of mankind through 8 distinct Era’s. The Common Era, the era most familiar to the one you and I know, before they knew what awaited within the dark forest beyond the stars. The year 201X C.E. or 2010 AD would mark the end of the common era. The Epoch C.E. stood for Crisis Era. This was the era directly following humanity’s discovery that not only was there other intelligent life in the universe, but it was vicious and hungry, determined to snuff out the human race and claim the earth for its own. The crisis era would last from 201X CE to 2208 AD which would mark the start of the Deterrence Era, which would last 62 years to be followed by a brief period of time known as the Post-Deterrence Era which lasted approximately two years from 2270 - 2272. The ages that followed were, in order, The Broadcast Era from 2272-2332, The Bunker Era from 2333-2400, the Galaxy Era which began in 2273 and continued indefinitely, and finally the Black Domain Era for the DX3906 Star System which last from 2687 through 18,906,416. We will discuss all of these eras in future videos but in this one we will hone in on perhaps the most crucial era of all for humanity, The Deterrence Era, which began with the Wallfacer known as Lou Ji.

Thanks For Watching! The Ultimate Weapon of The Trisolarans | Three Body Problem SeriesQuinns Ideas2022-03-06 | It’s not every day that I encounter a series of books that I just love. Especially science fiction. Since I read The remembrance of Earth's past aka the Three-body problem series last year, I have not stopped thinking about it. The scale of this series is enormous, the ominous mysteries it invokes are intriguing and chilling to the core. In this video, we discuss some of the major events detailed in book two of the series, The Dark Forest, The Great Ravine, and the Trisolaran invasion of the Solar System.
By Year 205 of the Crisis Era, humanity at large believed that they had nothing to fear from the Trisolaran Fleet which had more than 200 years before it would reach the solar system. Fear of the Trisolarans, whose sophon technology had crippled humankind's understanding of physics, and allowed the aliens real-time knowledge of events on earth, had once nearly destroyed humanity, plunging them into the devastating period of time known as the great ravine. One might be tempted to compare the great ravine to the great depression of 1930, but the great ravine in no way compares to the depression…it is far worse. In the year 1930 there were about 2 billion people on earth, at the start of the great ravine there were 8.3 Billion people on earth, and when there was no more food, billions starved.

There are many haunting philosophical questions brought up in the Three-Body Problem series, but there is one that stuck with me more than the others. One of the themes that weave its way throughout all of Cixin Liu's books revolves around whether or not we can actually trust that our understanding of the universe actually reflects its true nature.
