Bill Evans - Peri’s Scope (Gypsy Jazz Cover) Soulubility 2024-06-03 | This is “Peri’s Scope” by Bill Evans! It’s probably made it up into my top 10 favorite jazz standards because it’s such a joyous tune. It was dedicated to Evans’ (a white guy) then girlfriend Peri, a black woman. That was considered scandalous at the time for reasons related to obvious racial prejudice, but I think it makes the impact of the song that much harder and beautiful. It’s very fun, lyrical and upbeat and it has a lot of quick ii-Vs that can be tricky to weave around when soloing, but once you get it it’s a blast to play. It’s called “St. James Infirmary Blues” and it’s an early jazz and blues standard. What’s interesting is we don’t really know who wrote it. While it was first recorded in 1927 as “Gambler’s Blues”, it evolved out of different folk songs and most likely finds its origins in the English folk song “The Unfortunate Rake”. Definitely a more somber tune today, but I’ve definitely want to post it for a while partly because of its history. I hope y’all enjoy!

Django’s Tiger Soulubility 2024-03-02 | This is a really fun tune! It’s called “Django’s Tiger” and it’s written by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. The only melody that remains the same in each recording I’ve noticed is the first eight bars. The rest you kind of have to fill in by soloing over the changes, which is a little bit tricky! Nocturne Soulubility 2024-02-29 | This is an underrated jazz tune called “Nocturne” by Spike Hughes. It’s originally from the 1930s, but the first cover I heard of it was by Julian Lage, an amazing jazz guitarist. He adds a kind of bluesy feel to it that I really enjoy. I hope you do too!

I read some of his lines from Donkey Kong 64 because that's my favorite iteration of the character. I went for this growly, menacing British accent and then dropped the pitch down a good bit too. Equinox - John Coltrane Cover Soulubility 2023-09-24 | John Coltrane would’ve been 97 years old today if he were still alive, and it just so happens to be the first day of fall too so I figured I would do a cover of one of my favorite tunes of his. This tune is called “Equinox” and it’s a minor blues. It’s unusual for a jazz tune, (as are a lot of John Coltrane’s original compositions) in that it’s in the key of C sharp minor, which you don’t hear much in the jazz world, especially for horn players. That being said, it sounds nice and open, which gives you a lot of room to solo over and it also kind of has this mysterious quality to it that’s pretty cool. I hope y’all enjoy and solo Deo Gloria!!

Written by David Wise for the legendary video game Donkey Kong Country, it’s actually an update of the main theme from the original arcade game with a hip, new (at the time) 90s flair.
