Everything has a beginning, a middle and an end after some fashion or other; and to THAT end, all things must pass.
And so it came to be that Australian Crawl, after its fashion, in February 1986, came to and end. It was a wrap. It was time. A wind-up. A sign-off. A relief. A joy. Funny. Sometimes slightly sad but resolute. A swan-song. A kiss-off; a sign-off; under the belt, on the wagon and headed for the barn.
Put to bed, wiped up, wiped out, cleaned up, mopped up, polished and polished off. That was all folks, that was all she ever wrote. Well… Next year, 2026, we celebrate The Fall Of Crawl.
So we’re taking the songs out for a COMMEMORATIVE run around the country.
It’s everything you know and love, celebrating things been and gone; and how time really does fly !

About -
“This song is how I see Nashville” Many years ago, James Reyne wrote some songs with the legendary Tony Joe White. “Next time you’re in Nashville,” the swamp rock king said, “give me a call.”
When James found himself in Music City for an ill-fated songwriting trip, he reached out to the Swamp Fox, who took him on a tour, showing him the Nashville sights.
Years later, after returning to the music mecca, James decided to document his experiences of “Cashville”, where songwriters from around the world venture, seeking fame and fortune.
The result is Going Back To Nashville, a classic driving country-rock song, filled with James Reyne’s razor-sharp observations and wonderfully wry wordplay.
The words tumble out as James tells the tale of a songwriter having “one more shot at Cow Town”.
James remembers Tony Joe White pointing out the Nashville landmarks as they drove around town. “Back then, a bit of a status symbol was how many head of buffalo you had on your ranch,” James recalls. “Pointing at Wynonna Judd’s place, Tony Joe said in that distinctively deep voice, ‘She’s got like 20 head of buffalo.’”
The song also sees James revisiting Australian Crawl’s first international tour – their shows with Willie Nelson in New Zealand in 1981.
James spotted a sticker on Willie’s road cases: “Honk if you love Delbert”, which now turns up in Going Back To Nashville. “I’ve always loved Delbert McClinton,” James notes.
The song also references Tom T. Hall’s Watermelon Wine and namechecks Jerry Jeff Walker, as well as George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton, with James singing: “Now I ain’t George and she ain’t Tammy/ I ain’t Porter and she ain’t Dolly.”
James recorded Going Back To Nashville with Sydney producer Matt Druery and engineer Dan Willington (who also provided the guitar and bass), with James’ long-time compadre John Watson on drums.
The song is like James Reyne’s Lonely Planet guide to Nashville, “where Wynonna’s buffalo roam” and “if it ain’t the heat, it’s the humidity”.
“This song is how I see Nashville,” James says.
And there’s even a nod to the man who gave him that initial tour.
“Shout out to Tony Joe, who knew I had to go.”
Going Back To Nashville is the latest single for ARIA Hall of Famer James Reyne, who has had 19 Top 40 singles – including six Top 10 hits – and 11 Top 10 albums. His songs have provided the soundtrack to endless Australian summers. As the legendary critic Ed Nimmervoll noted, “His voice is as familiar to us as the taste of Vegemite, as essentially Australian.”
Lyrics - I was a rider in the rain In the downtown, decadent style I got rich but blew it all On cars and dope and a chorus smile The best songs come from broken hearts And wine and the white mans’ folly Now, I ain’t George and she ain’t Tammy And I ain’t Porter and she ain’t Dolly One more shot of cowtown’s gonna fix me Still my git-tar’s by my side Hell, I was born to ride You gonna use that thing Or just sit here whistlin’ Dixie?
I’m going back to Nashville As in Tennessee It can’t be beat And it ain’t the heat It’s the humidity Yes, I’m going back to Cashville Where Wynona’s buffalo roam Shout out to Tony Joe He knew I had to go But now I’m a-comin’ home
And I honk ‘cause I love Delbert And Jerry Jeff, he ain’t no fool Hell, I just loved that country music When country wasn’t cool And that mud-head moon’s a chilly mistress But man, how she can shine On old dogs sippin’ pop-skull whiskey And watermelon wine Sure, I might have copped some attitude Shed my skin just like a snake Somewhere out on Hickory Lake Becalmed in my horse latitudesRed Hot Summer Tour Diary South Australia - March 2022...James Reyne2022-03-19 | As the Red Hot Summer Unfinished Business Tour rolled into Adelaide, Josh Owen was there to capture it all...
