EmeraldoTheDragonUPDATE (19 August 2015): Unfortunately, this remix is no longer available to download. The link got taken down after someone from Nintendo of America filed a copyright violation complaint (I guess Nintendo doesn't condone distribution of fan-made works of their IP's...). Sorry, everyone, but I won't be providing another download link, in case this happens to me again. If you want this remix, you'll have to "download" it through other means. I've already had 2 strikes against my MediaFire account; any more and I could lose that account altogether. Plus, I'm not at all willing to risk falling foul of any official Nintendo staff (again?), especially considering the company is pretty much the Disney of the video games industry and they are well within their means to try and sue me for evey penny I have and thus render me dirt poor and (possibly) homeless.

I decided to remix the Boss Battle theme from the third Mario & Luigi RPG in NES style, since it's so catchy. Now, I know I said that using the same instrument on both channels can make a song sound flat and 1-dimensional, but there are a few exceptions where it actually works to a reasonably good effect, and this, in my opinion, is one of those exceptions.
I made two NES mock-up screenshots for this video. The first one was made when I couldn't find any screenshots taken straight from the ROM via an emulator (I myself have that ROM, but my emulator crashes when the game enters a battle), so I had to borrow graphics from Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario World. Cheap, I know, but it works somewhat. At least I managed to find an actual Bowser sprite from the game, and I give thanks to Super Mario Wiki for having that sprite in their image gallery.
As for the second mock-up, I actually could find a directly-ripped ROM screenshot, in PNG format (Again, thanks to Super Mario Wiki), but the background has literally hundreds of individual colours, so when it came down to reducing them, the end result looks like something out of a pirate ROM. I'm still glad I made it, though.

As much as I appreciate (kind of?) all the... um... "attention" that this remix/video has attracted over the years, it wouldn't hurt to have a listen to some of my other remixes. They need some love, too.

I guess I should put some kind of copyright information here (like I should've done when I first uploaded this video). The music on which this remix is based is owned by Nintendo. I claim no ownership or revenue from the content herein.
(If anyone can suggest a better copyright notice, that would be a big help as I suck at legal mumbo-jumbo)

Also, two other companies called "Real Cures, Inc." and Audiam are apparently making money off this video, claiming that the majority of the music sounds like a song called "Happy Happy Birthday" (I wish I was making this up). I have no idea what that's all about, considering this tune sounds NOTHING like any rendition of Happy (Happy) Birthday I've ever heard, and especially since this music is a remix of music from a VIDEO GAME. Whatever. At least this video hasn't been taken down, but just be warned that ads might appear in it, or so I've been told...

(As of 23 October 2009) It's been 2 weeks since Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story was released in Europe, so I think it's safe to assume that a good number of European gamers will have already beaten the game by now. Therefore, this NES remix of the final battle theme will not be considered a spoiler.
The bass and percussion were a little bit tricky to pull off at first (Moreso the percussion because I couldn't get an accurate idea of how it went in the original tune, and the VGMTrans-converted MIDI, strangely, doesn't have any percussion), but with some regular playback checking and some intuition (as well as some help from Anvil Studio), I was able to overcome those problems. The first part of the tune sounds a little light, but it picks up halfway through and carries on as such until it loops.
The picture actually wasn't that hard to make. As you can tell, it's from the Japanese version. I made it back when the game was still only released in Japan.
Right, that's all the M&L: BIS NES remixes out of the way. NOW I'm going to make Dragon Quest V remixes as my next FamiTracker project, but I might post some completely different videos in-between as I've kinda been itching to do so for some time.

I tried implementing the piano bit as DPCM, but it overwhelmed the rest of the sequence, so I had to do without it. I originally had the organ instrument at the same noise level as the backup string instrument, but that made the sequence a bit louder than I wanted it, so I had to change its noise level to 0. At the very least, I'm glad I was able to fully emulate the harp instrument at the end before the tune loops.
Only 1 more M&L BIS NES remix left. No prizes for guessing what it might be. :PNES Remix - Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story - Peachs CastleEmeraldoTheDragon2009-10-21 | UPDATE (4 Aug '11): MP3 download available! Here is the link:
It's been said by several people that part of this tune is a remix of Cackletta's theme from Superstar Saga, and I have to agree. It sounds so similar, there's no way it can be a coincidence.

I just made this remix on the fly right now and wanted to release it now to put it in order of the the last few M&L BIS NES remixes I'm releasing. It only took me about half an hour to make.
At first, I shyed away from remixing this tune as I didn't really care much for it and I thought that the way the harp was playing would throw off the rhythm, but when I tried it out on FamiTracker, it worked out perfectly, so I quickly sequenced the rest of the tune and here it is.
Is it just me, or does the last part before the loop sound a LOT like Ganon's Castle/Ganondorf's theme from the Zelda series?
NOW there are only 3 more M&L3 remixes to upload...
(P.S. I don't know about anyone else who uses FamiTracker, but every time I change the Triangle channel's volume with the Z effect, it causes a few static pops during playback. Does anyone know a way around this so I don't have to keep editing out the pops when I'm converting the WAV to MP3?)NES Remix - Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story - Giant BattleEmeraldoTheDragon2009-10-20 | UPDATE (4 Aug '11): MP3 download available! Here is the link:
Three battle themes down, one more to go. I actually made this remix -before- the Bowser's Theme remix, so after I'd made this one, Bowser's Theme was that bit easier.
I had a slight problem with the percussion in this one as I knew I had to put in the more audible notes but wanted to put in as many not-so-audible notes as possible without the percussion taking over the tune.
The picture was actually harder to make than it looks. In the original image, the Super Peach Castle was charging a dark energy attack, and the graphics for that were semi-transparent, thus mixing several colours together and making them harder to reduce. Worse still was that Bowser's hand was hidden behind a speech bubble, so I had no option but to guess as to what it looked like, checking against a video of one of the Giant Battles in the process.

Another quick and easy remix. Very slow, soft, warm and beautiful in stark contrast to the previous tune. Doesn't it just make you want to stay in bed all day with your favourite pet(s) by your side?
I was able to import 5 pizzicato string DPCM samples at full quality without running out of space (since each sample is only 1-2kb in size, so they take up 10kb at the most in total, out of the maximum capacity of 16kb).NES Remix - Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story - Mini-GameEmeraldoTheDragon2009-10-15 | UPDATE (4 Aug '11): MP3 download available! Normally, I don't take requests, but a couple of people asked me if I would be able to remix this tune. At first, I said no, because I didn't know how to slow down the song at the last part, but I also said that I'd give it a try and figure a way round the part where the song slows down.
I had just remembered that I have some (very) old MIDI software called Presto Arranger that shows precisely what tempos are used when a MIDI has more than one of them (My version of Anvil Studio doesn't do this for some reason), so I ran the Cavi Cape MIDI on it, took note of all the tempos used, implemented them in FamiTracker using the F Effect (and my knowledge of converting decimal numbers into hexadecimals), and hey presto! The end result was surprisingly accurate!

To be honest, this remix seems a bit pointless, considering the original song already sounds quite retro with its own square bleep samples, but I figured that I might as well sequence it to go with the NES-ified image I made.

I have to admit that I'm not entirely proud about this one. I wanted to add more depth to the middle part of the tune (where the harp comes into play), e.g. by adding some pizzicato string samples to the DPCM channel, but it didn't have enough space for me to use all the samples I wanted, so I had no choice but to just not use them altogether.
I also had trouble with the percussion in this song, too. I was constantly checking my remix against the original song to make sure I got the percussion in the right place.
I don't hate this remix, nor do I regret making it. I'm simply saying that I wish I could've made it better.NES Remix - Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story - Dark AreaEmeraldoTheDragon2009-10-13 | UPDATE (4 Aug '11): MP3 download available! Here is the link:
As I was using Anvil Studio to help me with this remix, it eventually struck me that I was inadvertently basing it on the Inside Bowser's Body version of the song, which I wasn't aiming for, so I went through the trouble to replace all the relevant notes so the remix sounded like the normal version, despite it now sounding slightly more ear-splitting in the first part after the intro.
(For the record, I won't be remixing any of the Inside Bowser's Body versions of the songs)NES Remix - Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story - Bumpsy Plains / Blubble Lake (Surrounding Area)EmeraldoTheDragon2009-10-13 | UPDATE (4 Aug '11): MP3 download available! Here is the link:
I had a little trouble with the percussion in this one. The original song seemed like it had one note in every beat (judging by what the MIDI's percussion channel looks like in Anvil Studio), so I could only try to recreate it as best I could. Another remix where I couldn't find a GIF/PNG image of the appropriate part of the game. If I'm honest, I could've probably done a little bit better with this one, as the parts where the steel drums are played sound a bit empty and the instrument I used for them kinda blends a bit too much with the instrument I used in the other square channel, as they're both the same noise level.NES Remix - Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story - Dimble WoodEmeraldoTheDragon2009-10-10 | UPDATE (4 Aug '11): MP3 download available! UPDATE (4 Aug '11):
A new, working MP3 download link is available! Here it is:
OK, so I sorta lied when I said that my next FamiTracker project would be Dragon Quest V, but if you've been reading my notices lately in the Recent Activity section of my channel, you'll know that I changed the description of my previous NES remix video to say that my next FT project is a mix of DQ5 and M&L: Bowser's Inside Story. I'll be uploading most of my M&L:BIS remixes first since the game has just been released in Europe at this time of writing.
The "NO REQUESTING" rule still applies, so don't even think about it.
Anyway, this remix wasn't that hard to do. I used Anvil Studio to look at the notation of a MIDI I converted in VGMTrans. This helped me with any notes that are played very quickly, like the bass instument. The orchestra hits are both square notes and DPCM samples. That's about it in terms of the music. As for the mock-up screenshot, I changed Mario and Luigi's sprites since the Shroob Battle screenshot to make them look more 8-bit-friendly, and as always, the background was a bitch to edit.NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - CreditsEmeraldoTheDragon2009-07-11 | Finally, 8-bit FF4 credits music. This was harder than I thought because the song keeps switching between 4/4 time and 3/4 time. To get the best results, I sequenced the remix with 48 steps in each frame instead of the usual 32, and multiplied the tempo by a factor of 1.5. Even so, I still had to make separate instruments for the parts that play 4 notes every quarter note to get it accurate.
(There's no way I was going to remix the ENTIRE ending theme. It's 11 minutes long! Too much work. :P)
And that's it for Final Fantasy IV NES remixes! Thank you for listening to them. Hope you enjoyed (most of) them. Sorry I can't remix every song from the game, but as I've said, some songs would require serious cutbacks, and that would make them sound less good. My next NES remix projects will be Dragon Quest V and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story; I'll get round to those in due course. In the meantime, I'll probably be doing some more remixes from random games as well as upload another arcade game soundtrack and maybe some entirely different videos altogether. Stay tuned!NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Final BattleEmeraldoTheDragon2009-07-11 | The catchy final battle music in 8-bit form. I had a little problem with the rapid notes partway after the start of the song, but nothing insolvable. The rest of the song was easy. For the trumpet part at the end before the song loops, I had to make a separate instrument with an arpeggio so that it could play 3 notes while still adhering to the 4/4 time signature.
I couldn't find a GIF or PNG screenshot of this part of the game, so I downloaded a savestate and took a screen capture of my own on an emulator. For all you Kain fans out there, I took the shot just as Kain got into his "ready" pose. You may also notice that Rosa's 8-bit battle sprite has been tweaked since the Golbez and Calcobrena battle mock-ups. I made it a little better-looking by making her headdress parts visible and recolouring her shoulder pads.
Only 1 more FF4 NES remix to go...NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Giant of Babil / Lunar Core - Within the GiantEmeraldoTheDragon2009-07-11 | The final dungeon-esque song from FF4 was just too epic to pass up. The percussion-type instruments at the start were hard to emulate, and I know they're not perfect, but I did the best I could with them.
I never realised it before, but the second half of this song sounds a lot like the second half of the main overworld theme. The harp instrument is a dead giveaway.
I wonder if the NES could handle backgrounds within/behind other backgrounds? Because even though I recoloured the image in the video to suit NES standards (It only has 18 colours), if FF4 had been an 8-bit game instead of a 16-bit one, I think the dark area with the spinning gears would have probably been blank.
2 FF4 NES remixes left...NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Crystal Palace - The LunariansEmeraldoTheDragon2009-07-11 | I'm not entirely sure what possessed me to remix this tune. I just felt like it. For the piano track, I first used both the Triangle channel and a Square instrument, and from then on I just used the Triangle channel, using the DPCM channel to gradually decrease the Triangle volume further along each frame. Unfortunately, that led to the presence of some nasty pop sounds which had to be edited out separately.
3 more FF4 NES remixes...NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Lunar WhaleEmeraldoTheDragon2009-07-11 | The majestic theme of the best vehicle in Final Fantasy IV, in 8-bit form. I wanted to add the timpani/drums in there, so I made a couple of DPCM samples and put them in. I had to readjust the volume of the Triangle channel after each sample playback, though, as it tends to go quieter when the DPCM channel is used.
4 more FF4 NES remixes left...NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Evil Theme - Somewhere in the world...EmeraldoTheDragon2009-07-11 | 8-bit remix of a track that plays in certain scenes, such as when Golbez sends Scarmiglione after Cecil, or when Cecil and Kain finally meet again after Kain's disappearance from the village of Mist.
Here I go again with the rapid 2-note instrument "effect" that I previously used in my 8-bit Damcyan remix. I did it to save space and so I could add the harp instrument into the second Square channel and give the sequence that extra bit of depth. Plus, it still sounds good to the ears.
As FF veterans will know, the scene in this video's image is the top floor of the Tower of Zot, so once again, more NES-rendered graphic-borrowing on my part. :P
5 more FF4 NES remixes to go...NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Edwards Theme - Melody of LuteEmeraldoTheDragon2009-07-11 | 8-bit remix of Edward's lovely theme which he plays on his harp when he's out at night in the oasis town of Kaipo, and when the other heroes try to fight the Dark Elf.
All it took to make this remix was one instrument and one sound channel. I remembered to make the first and last bits of each section slower than the rest of the song, like in the original. The mock-up screenshot was easy, too, as I just took the graphics from the 8-bit Baron town mock-up.
(You might want to turn the volume down a bit if it's too loud for you)NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Bomb RingEmeraldoTheDragon2009-07-11 | Backtracking a bit to an early part of the game. This is the music that plays when Cecil and Kain inadvertently destroy the village of Mist with their "mysterious" package; remixed in 8-bit form, of course. Another easy sequence.
I found out how to get high quality again! Apparently, YouTube have raised the minimum resolution for high quality videos to 640 x 480, so now I have to render all future NES remix videos at 640 x 560. This is to retain the aspect ratio of the original image (which is 8:7, and the normal NES screen resolution is 256 x 224).NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Dwarven Castle/King Giotts ThemeEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-24 | I really like this jolly little tune, so why not NES-ify it? :D
Just so you know, I won't be making NES remixes of every tune from Final Fantasy IV. Some songs are impossible to remix without making HUGE cutbacks, and I'm not really all that willing to take such a risk. I'm only going to make about 8 more, then that'll be it for FF4. Sorry if you're disappointed by this, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - UnderworldEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-24 | I made a preliminary version of this where the string instrument was at the same pitch as in the original song, but it grated too much with the flute instrument and irritated my ears, so I lowered its pitch by one octave. It sounds better like this.
As I was recolouring the lava in the 8-bit mock-up, I originally had white as the lightest colour, but that looked weird so I replaced the white with the lightest shade of lime green on the NES palette. I know that sounds strange, but believe me, it works. Besides, the lava in the original game is a bright glowing yellow colour anyway.
EDIT: No, the picture is not animated. YouTube processed the video in crappy low quality, so the image keeps flickering for no reason. I hate it when my videos don't get High Quality, even though they (used to) meet the conditions for it. I don't want to remake this video as that will throw off the rough order in which I've been making these FF4 remixes, so you'll just have to settle for adding &fmt=18 to the end of the URL box if you want to see and hear it in high quality.NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Dancing CalcobrenaEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-20 | Another short and easy remix. I made it just today and it only took about half an hour or so.
Like Golbez, I can also see Calcobrena's sprite working in 8-bit form.NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Golbezs ThemeEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-20 | It's not easy to emulate an organ with NES/Famicom audio, and this was the best I could get. At least I remembered to alter the tempo on the second half of the song.
Golbez's sprite actually works quite well in 8-bit form.NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Elemental Archfiend Battle - The Dreadful BattleEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-17 | Even though the Triangle channel is quiet in some parts (due to it playing notes on the lower octaves), I think this remix turned out pretty well. What do you think?
I couldn't find an in-game screenshot of a battle against any of the Elemental Fiends in GIF or PNG format, and I couldn't be bothered playing my rom just to get to that part, so I took the sprites and 8-bitised them. Better than nothing. :PNES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Tower of BabilEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-17 | A very easy remix. Had no problems at all. The screenshot was easy to make as well, since the Tower of Babil uses the same tile set as the Tower of Zot, so all I had to do was borrow the graphics from my 8-bit Zot screenshot.NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - AirshipEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-17 | I know it's short, but again, I just felt like remixing the tune. As for the mock-up screenshot, I got REALLY lazy and just did a sprite swap from the overworld screenshot. I can't be arsed to make a new one. :PNES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Mysidia Elders Theme - Long Way To GoEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-17 | I just felt like remixing this theme, since I like the sound of it. Sorry if it's a bit loud or grating.NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Damcyan CastleEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-13 | Another simple remix. I tried fitting two instruments onto the same channel, which is why you hear that rapid arpeggio fluctuation. I don't know about you, but I rather like that effect.
EDIT: The High Quality button is missing from this video too! What's going on?NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - TownEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-13 | A very simple, yet authentic-sounding, remix. Had no problems whatsoever.
I know the buildings in the screenshot look a bit too yellow, but I had to recolor them like that to make the total number of colours in the image fit to NES standards and limitations, since the wall on the left was already yellow to begin with.NES Remix - Final Fantasy IV - Overworld/Main ThemeEmeraldoTheDragon2009-06-13 | I'm getting back into sequencing NES remixes of tunes from Final Fantasy IV. We start the second wave with the main overworld theme, which had a little bit of trouble with at first because I couldn't decide which sound channel to put the bass on; but when I had it on a square channel, and the main melody on the triangle channel, the main melody didn't come out loud enough, so I switched them around and this was the best I could get.
The hoax screenshot wasn't too hard to make, even with the tiny town sprites and the numerous colours on the castle and forest graphics.
EDIT: The High Quality button seems to be missing from the player. I don't understand how that could happen as this video has the same specs as all the other NES remix videos (except Baron Castle).NES Remix - Flimbos Quest - Levels 2, 4 and 6 (Two versions)EmeraldoTheDragon2009-05-13 | Another 2-in-1-esque sequence here. Again, it's not exactly 2-in-1, as it's the same song, but I've made two separate versions.
The first one is directly based off the Commodore 64 version of the game and tries to faithfully reproduce its sound. (Sorry about the poor quality at the start. That's just how FamiTracker rendered the tune)
The second version is based off a MIDI sequenced by Sean Bee of VGMusic.com fame. BUT, I did NOT use GXSCC at all to recreate the MIDI version of the NES remix. You can tell because it uses both noise and DPCM for percussion, whereas DPCM is nonexistant in GXSCC and the noise audio reproduced in GXSCC is different.
The mock-up screenshot I made for this video is interesting in that I didn't reduce any colours. Instead, I *added* more colours to it, but still complying to the limitations of the NES. You know how Commodore 64 games used 2 x 1 pixels for their graphics? Well, I resized a few parts in this screenshot to make them appear more NES-like (e.g. the stone ground and the wooden platforms). I suppose I should've tweaked all of the graphics in the shot, but I felt too lazy to do it. xPNES Remix - Star Fox 64 / Lylat Wars - Star Wolfs ThemeEmeraldoTheDragon2009-05-06 | I told you my next NES remix would be Star Wolf's theme, and here it is! A genuine NES rendition of one of the most popular songs in the Star Fox series, not some fake GXSCC-converted MIDI!NES Remix Special - Star Fox 2EmeraldoTheDragon2009-05-04 | This marks my 50 video milestone* on YouTube, and to celebrate, I bring you, not one, but FIVE (technically four) NES remixes in one video! It's not much, really, as they're all very short tunes, but they're all from Star Fox 2, the mysteriously unreleased sequel to the original Star Fox (a.k.a. Starwing) on the SNES.
In order, the songs are:
1. Title Screen (Version 1)
2. Title Screen (Version 2)
(I made two versions of the title tune, one without the timpani percussion, and one with it. Which do you think is better?)
3. Player Select
4. Mission Briefing
5. Map Screen
Side note: I originally only sequenced the Mission Briefing track and was going to couple it with the Star Wolf remix I made, but I woke up one morning feeling like sequencing a few more tunes from Star Fox 2, and the result was this video. I'm going to release my Star Wolf NES remix next.
*(It's been a long time coming. I registered on here nearly 3 years ago, and I'm still on my original account!)NES Remix - Pokémon Platinum - Giratina BattleEmeraldoTheDragon2009-05-01 | UPDATE (5 Oct '17): Unfortunately, the download link no longer works as Nakido have shut down. I am reluctant to upload the audio file elsewhere and provide another link after my MediaFire account was previously hit with at least 2 copyright notices from Nintendo. Sorry.

This was EXTREMELY hard to pull off, especially all those rapid notes, slurring notes and some parts of the percussion. For some reason, I still don't think this remix is entirely perfect, but I can't be bothered to do anymore tweeking. Again, I used DPCM to add to the song and make it sound less empty. Unfortunately, the samples I used made the Triangle channel go quiet on some parts.
Regardless of any trouble I had during sequencing, I'm very proud to have made this particular NES remix.
(On a minor related note, I captured Giratina on my copy of Pokémon Platinum earlier today)

This is just my own interpretation.
Behold the power of DPCM! I used this sound channel to import some timpani/drum samples I made and make the remix sound that bit more epic. You're probably wondering how I managed to pull off the sweeping percussion you hear near the last part of the song. I did it with great difficulty. :P
I had this song playing only once before fading rather than twice because it's that long, but that shouldn't be anything to moan about. After all, it only plays once before fading on the OST anyway. :P

Before you go mentioning it, I know that Cat333Pokemon already did a NES remix of this song. This is simply my own interpretation of what it would sound like on the NES. I actually made my version of the remix 2 years ago; it's one of the first NES remixes I ever sequenced along with Tower of Zot from Final Fantasy IV.

This will be the last Super Mario RPG NES Remix I'm making, at least for a while, because it's so damn hard to make a NES mock-up of an SMRPG screenshot. I know I don't HAVE to make one for every remix I sequence, but I like to do it because it adds to the atmosphere.
Now, BEFORE you go ranting that there's already a NES remix of sorts of this song, I ALREADY KNOW about it. I wanted to make my own version that sounded more accurate and faithful to the NES.
This remix didn't take very long to sequence; only about 2 hours or so. There's no percussion because there isn't any in the original song (That "chuff"-like sound you hear in the original actually comes from the instrument used for the bass)
Sorry if you hear any little noise/static "blips" in the video (there's at least 3). I couldn't do anything about them.

The main melody was dead easy to recreate, but the percussion was the complete opposite as I ran into a few problems with fitting three percussion channels into the sole Noise channel, and to be honest, I'm not entirely happy with how that came out. I did make the notes for when you hear the metal clanging noise in the background, it's just not very audible in the main part of the song because the DPCM sample I used is so quiet.
