Youve Lost That Lovin Feelin The Righteous Brothers (Enhanced Audio) rbvo 2023-05-27 | Enhanced audio, in glorious MONOPHONIC SOUND, just like we listened to it on AM Top 40 radio in 1964 and '65 when this awesome song was on the charts.For you reaction video people: They're not really brothers. Bill Medley, the tall guy with the dark hair and the deep voice, and Bobby Hatfield, the shorter guy with the blonde hair and the higher-pitched voice, started performing together in Southern California in the early 1960s. Early on, even before they had adopted the name Righteous Brothers, they were playing a club gig down near San Diego where a number of American servicemen would hang out. After the show one night, two of the 'brothers" saw them outside the club and called out to them, saying, "That was righteous, brother!" Right after that, Bill and Bobby adopted the name, Righteous Brothers.Their first hit single was a rock 'n roll number written by Bill called "Little Latin Lupe Lu," which became a top 10 hit in 1962. They dabbled with a few other rock-songs. But the group's big break came in 1963 when the Beatles asked them to open for the Fab Four on their first American tour. This is when Beatlemania was just taking off, and this exposure was invaluable for the Righteous Brothers, But the grueling schedule of a national tour was a lot to deal with, and right about that time, ABC Television made them an offer they couldn't refuse. ABC-TV launched a weekly prime-time TV series called "Shindig!" Hosted by Los Angeles DJ Jimmy O'Neill, "Shindig!" featured a parade of A-list music stars that were topping the American Top 40 chart each week. To fill out the lineup, ABC-TV wisely invited a number of artists to comprise their "house band" (including Billy Preston, who would go on to become, in many people's minds, "the fifth Beatle"). And they also brought on a small nucleus of singing acts, including the Righteous Brothers. This opportunity was perfect for Bill and Bobby, as it would allow them to stay at home in LA while getting this massive national exposure on a hugely popular TV show geared to the very audience their music was for.So not surprisingly, when they released "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" at the end of 1964, it climbed the charts to become the duo's first #1 hit, and became a mainstay on top 40 radio for the first few months of 1965, sharing the chart with such classic hits as "My Girl" by the Temptations, "She's A Woman" by the Beatles, "Downtown" by Petula Clark, "Love Potion Number Nine" by the Searchers, "This Diamond Ring" by Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and many other classic hits that are beloved to this day by youngsters who today, all these years later, sill love hearing them.The Righteous Brothers would follow "Lovin' Feelin'" with "Just Once In My Life," and later that same year, would release one of their most memorable hits featuring Bobby on solo, "Unchained Melody." They would finish 1965 back in the top 10 with another Bobby Hatfield solo, "Ebb Tide." Their sound on those hits in 1964-65 featured their producer Phil Spector's signature "Wall of Sound" style of production, made famous by artists like the Ronettes, another one of Phil Spector's groups.In 1966, the Righteous Brothers left Philles Records (Phil Spector's label) and signed with Verve Records, a subsidiary of MGM, thereby enabling them to produce their own songs. (They produced one or two of their songs while at Philles Records, but the record labels had "Produced by Phil Spector" printed on the label, which infuriated Bill Medley, who actually produced "Unchained Melody"). Their first offering on Verve Records in 1966 was "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration," which went to #1 faster than any of their other hits. "Soul and Inspiration" was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, two of the songwriters working out of the Brill Building, and who also wrote "Lovin' Feelin'" (with Phil Spector). Sadly for Bill and Bobby, their follow-ups to "Soul and Inspiration" never quite connected with listeners, and the Righteous Brothers' star quickly fell.Bill broke away from Bobby for a while in the late '60s and released a song called "Brown Eyed Woman" about an interracial relationship, shortly after the Supreme Court's landmark Loving v. Virginia decision that made interracial marriage legal in America.The Righteous Brothers had one more big hit together in 1974 called "Rock and Roll Heaven," a tribute to artists who had died much too young (like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Jopin, Jim Morrison, among others)."Unchained Melody" enjoyed a second run up the charts in the late '80s when it was featured in the movie "Ghost."Shortly after, Bill Medley teamed up with Jennifer Warnes on a song called "The Time of My Life" that spent many weeks in the Top 10.The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Bobby Hatfield passed away shortly thereafter.Today, Bill Medley is still performing as half of the Righteous Brothers with his new partner, Bucky Heard.

WHBs Illegal Legal ID jingle rbvo 2022-05-16 | WHB was the big top 40 station in Kansas City in the '50s and '60s. They had a lot jingles. In around 1966-67, this one ran at the end of their newscasts every hour at the top of the hour as the station's Legal ID. The FCC requires stations to identify themselves by call letter and city of license once an hour, and in the '60s, they were required to do it twice an hour. But when WHB ran this jingle as its Legal ID, they weren't quite adhering to the FCC's requirements for a Legal ID. Still, this jingle became a signature of every broadcast hour because of where it ran.

In Memoriam: Gene Woody rbvo 2022-05-15 | Sad news today from the wife of Gene Woody, that he has recently passed away. Gene was the overnight deejay for radio station WHB 710 in Kansas City during most of the 1960s when I was growing up. Gene held down this position while during the daytime hours attending med school to become a doctor. His wife informed me this morning of Gene's recent passing, and I humbly offer this video as a small gesture of appreciation for him being a part of my childhood...and I know, a part of the lives of many others who lived in Kansas City in the 1960s and were up all night listening to the great Gene Woody. One of the best of WHB's "World's Happiest Broadcasters."The music you hear in this video is a small selection of WHB jingles that I have in my collection, all produced by PAMS of Dallas.

The documentary tells the story of Todd Storz and his role in the creation of Top 40 radio in the 1950s.Richard Ward Fatherley gave me a copy of this documentary shortly after it was produced back in 1999. This is the original, unedited version. There is a shorter version of the documentary that is in the hands of a couple of media archives. But Dick personally gave me this original version. Shortly after his death in March of 2010, his son, Richard, Jr. gave me expressed permission to publish this work online for all to enjoy.It is a fabulous work, well-researched, exquisitely written, and masterfully told by two of the nation's best narrators.I do not own the copyright to this work or of the music they used in producing it. I would assume that the music used in the production was included under Fair Use terms. When the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, like many Americans, I was relegated to self-quarantining at home for extended periods (well, months) at a time. Rather than doing something productive, I felt it more important to maintain my sanity by trying to have a little fun. Much to my surprise, I found that singing along with karaoke tracks proved to be about as much fun as I've had in a good long while.Now, I won't be so bold as to tell you these performances are great, but I will tell you that I've had a ball doing them. And maybe as a group, this latest batch of songs might even be a little better than the last playlist of songs that I produced called "Charmin of the Board," which was my first foray into this kind of thing. Clearly, I am not a professional singer (I'm not much of a singer at all) and I've never had singing lessons (which may be obvious to many of you). But my dog seems to enjoy me singing, and that's all the positive feedback I need. :-)I only do these songs for my own amusement and for my family and friends, all of whom know full well that me singing is about the most out-of-character thing they've heard of me doing in their lives. 18 - Smile - Randy Brown rbvo 2020-10-14 | I am not a singer.This video should prove that.I’m not a musician of any kind.What I am is a music lover, and someone who, like many of you, has grown bored while quarantining at home during the coronavirus pandemic. So I sought out new activities to occupy my time (and my mind) to keep from going stark raving mad.Among the activities I chose was to learn how Auto Tune works, or more specifically, how a feature called Flex Pitch works in Apple’s Logic Pro X. So I decided to put it to the ultimate test by singing a karaoke song and seeing if I could pitch correct my own horrible singing voice.You see, I’ll be the first to admit that my singing voice sounds like a cross between fingernails on a chalkboard and the mating calls of a garbage truck in heat. So I figured if I could pitch correct my voice in Flex Pitch, then it surely ought to work for a musician who can actually sing. Most of these songs are a testament to how effective applications such as Flex Pitch and Auto Tune can be correcting off-pitch singers. But here’s what I didn’t expect from this exercise: After recording my first song, I had so much fun, I decided to do a second one. And by the time that one was done, I was hooked. I decided to record a bunch more.Don’t get the wrong impression. I know my performances suck. Flex Pitch does an amazing job at masking how horribly off-key I am throughout these songs. (You have no idea.) But it can’t hide the fact that I lack the presence and emotive nature that a professional singer brings to their vocals. But I don’t care. I had such a ball doing these songs that I’ll probably keep doing more. My musician friends tell me I should stay at it because it’s good for the soul. I’ve found that to be true so far, at least for me.These songs, mostly old Frank Sinatra standards (and a few songs made famous by some other artists that I admire), went into a collection (“album?”) that I’ve titled Charmin of the Bored as a salute to Sinatra’s nickname, “Chairman of the Board,” with a sarcastic nod to the circumstances we’ve all been living under in this pandemic, where bathroom tissue became a precious commodity and maintaining one’s sanity became an exercise in futility.I do not own the copyrights to these songs. The backing tracks are karaoke tracks that I downloaded, and I don’t own the copyrights to them, either. These songs are not for sale (as if anyone would buy them), and I have no intention of monetizing them on YouTube. I’m sharing them mostly for the amusement of my closest friends who know how completely devoid of any musical talent I am, and to share my love of music with the world. If you’re entertained by my performances, then I would suggest you clean out your ears and go listen to the versions of these songs by the original artists. They’re much, much better.:-)
