This video comprises a few dozen demos, mostly in clip form, for the challenge of scoring all monsters and secrets (UV) from a pistol start on Ultimate Doom's E4M4 "Unruly Evil" while taking no damage, whatsoever, a.k.a. UV Max + Reality, culminating in the new World Record in that category. For my first successful run, I take it slowly and also collect 100% items, which I call No Damage Completion. Even though this map is quite small, I found many ways to improve my route as we worked towards the world record time. Also, the location of the Invulnerability means that dropping the Items requirement for the speedrunning makes a huge difference. Unsurprisingly, MBCollector, in their Reality run of the map, chose to ignore the Invuln powerup.
I promised an explanation of the longtics versus shorttics issue:
When recording a demo for a Doom challenge to submit officially, the game is in shorttics mode. This means we can only turn in 'notches' which are 1/256th of a full rotation. However, in longtics mode, we can turn much more gradually, in units of 1/65536 of a rotation, very smooth! For the SR50 run to the Invulnerability, I had a specific standard angle in mind, which is actually quite easy to find in shorttics mode because of the large 'notches' as we turn. However, when we punch anything, our angle can get disrupted into one of the many longtics angles between the standard shorttics ones, making a precise manoeuvre impossible. Going through a teleporter forces the game to restore us to a standard angle once again.

It's great to see the ingenuity of Gandorf in his WR run. What we cannot see though, is how many attempts he needed and just how dangerous various parts of his route really were. But I love the end result, and cannot be too upset with being beaten because I enjoyed playing the map anyway and I'm just glad I didn't keep grinding my route to go just below 4:30 when Gandorf would have blown me out of the water anyway!
At least I managed to make E4M3 a FUN map to speedrun for No Damage with loads of gibs and making use of the rockets and plasma. And Gandorf only performed as he did because he was inspired after watching me on Twitch. Just before I scored the 5:38 and 4:53 successes in one stream, it was the most happy I've been with a route for a long time --- this meant I felt relaxed about taking a while (I expected several streams at least!) to succeed, and THIS mentality makes me succeed sooner, because it takes frustration off the table. But my difficulty with using rockets safely and quickly meant that I wasn't very pleased with my Personal Best run when I got it. Even though I don't get the WR glory myself, I'm satisfied for the map and the challenge to get the record demo it deserves. Here's hoping I can route a little better on E4M4 "Unruly Evil"! Tim Willits made a pretty and challenging map, but for a secret map slot it lacks any kind of special gimmick, such as E3M9's fake exit after copying E3M1.
Oh well, I finish just over a minute barrier (again!), but after almost 4000 attempts I had done enough --- it was particularly important to get a fast success showcasing the new strategy of sniping the cacodemons and caged baron from another room. One issue not covered in the video is the potential for telefragging that baron. It is very risky to attempt this with the baron awake, however if we enter the room through the teleporter we are also surrounded by hitscanners. It is possible to prepare by sniping off some of those snipers ahead of time, keeping the Baron asleep, but by the time we run to one of the teleporters near the starting area, the time we lose by travelling further cancels out the advantage gained from the quick kill on the Baron.
The 4:22 success could have been several seconds quicker, but for an awkward last Pinky. However, if I had got around 4:15 instead, I might have stopped the challenge and never got the 4:01! John Romero's cloud-let of cacodemons makes the early dodging very enjoyable. I try to clear imps first, then pinkies from in front of the starting area but the tomatoes sometimes approach slowly, or overwhelm me by getting very close very fast, or spread out awkwardly. However, this kind of start to a Reality challenge is very unusual indeed. In the Record speedrun, the start isn't too special, but the excellent pace otherwise makes going sub-4 minutes unrealistic enough for me to not pursue that target.
This video has ended up longer than intended, but I did not include outtakes in which I was shot from the long window by shotgunners in the marble room when I grabbed the shells near the blue door. It helped me a little when I realised that I only needed to grab ONE of those shell boxes because there is so much ammo provided on the stairs just after I get the radiation suit.
Improvers Gaming continues to offer lots of helpful ideas as I stream and I appreciate everyone's support on Twitch; I've now reached 150 followers. I am grateful for Improvers Gaming giving me a possible alternative strategy, even though after some experimenting, I chose not to use it in attempts. See his video at: youtube.com/watch?v=wRKyikRY1sw , which also covers the mechanics of the monster traps.

This map is a thrilling start to the 4th episode of Ultimate Doom, a set of 9 maps offering a great variety of No Damage challenges. Although I did not break the 3 minute barrier, I am pleased to have ran damageless in less than double the UV Max time --- current record (as of May 2025) is 1:32 by Kuckkuck.
The difficulty of tagging the rocket launcher secret without damage made it harder to take risks in the rest of the map. For cautious play I established that 18 seconds mod 32 was a good time to SR40 from the admittedly imprecise starting position 'in the middle of the lift somewhere'. When speedrunning, I knew that 29 seconds mod 32 was also good (11 seconds later is just 1 tic different on the weapon-bobbing cycle because 11 seconds = 11 x 35 = 385 tics = (12 x 32) + 1 tics = 1 tic mod 32.) Allowing for 32 tics being a bit less than a second, we can then go one cycle earlier by going at a 'late 28 seconds', trying for approximately 28.06, or one cycle earlier at 27.14, or at 26.23 etc.. The urge to pinch another few seconds made it harder to 'get set' for the manoeuvre, causing a sudden spike in slime damage when I started speedrunning this map.
With so much analysis stretching this video to half an hour, I did not even cover the red key grab through the bars! Although this is a well-known speedrunning trick, the point of it is to open the red door early and release the Barons and last group of spectres and imps. I only experimented briefly with this before deciding that the results are far too chaotic for a No Damage challenge!

'UV Max + Reality'. The first successful run also includes all items (for you, BMD!) and is a No Damage Completion. The second demo is the new UV Max + Reality World Record for this map, at least until I tackle it again sometime... There is commentary throughout the video, some of which was streamed live on Twitch while I played.
Thanks to 4ShockBlast for allowing me to submit demos recorded using the now out-of-date version 0.24.3 of DSDA Doom after the version enforcement deadline --- I will be up-to-date for future demo recordings.
Thanks also to BMD for inspiring me to start playing Scythe in 2020 and for his permission to use clips from his walkthrough video 'Scythe (100%) Walkthrough (Map 30: Fire And Ice)', available at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eE8sSh1JZKk&t=2947s
Way back in 2020, when I started playing Scythe for No Damage, I just regarded the final map as impossible. However, I gradually started to doubt that assessment as I played around with possible ways to start, and by the end of 2021 I was convinced the challenge was doable. I recorded a 2 1/2 hour training demo, in which I was hurt several times. Then in 2024 I became obsessed with turning my cautious route into a speedrun, wondering if I could get my time below one hour. After some more routing off-stream, including recording a 48-minute TAS in several segments, I started 2 weeks of practice streams live on Twitch in January 2025 before tackling attempts. An Outtakes video will cover much of the ups and downs that led to the successes in this video, hopefully to be out by the autumn of 2025. As I have learned how to play this map, I have grown to love it very much but for now, I must move on.
I need to say something about the sound quality in the video. I dropped my Old Faithful microphone during the making of this epic and tried to revive it with Reafir effects, with some success (thanks to Coincident for recommending that). However, it still wasn't great. I have bought a lovely new mic, but it takes a little time to get the most out of this model, so the sound of my voice really has 4 different modes: a) old microphone before I dropped it b) old microphone with damage but also Reafir effects c) new microphone when I didn't position myself so well etc. d) new microphone sounding lovely. In such a long video, I am NOT going to rerecord loads of commentary in mode d), so we are stuck with the four different versions of my voice. Besides, Live Commentary is sacrosanct and cannot be recreated.

If I had just stuck with my first strategy, I would have probably succeeded within about 100 attempts and had a simpler video to make. I was seduced by the idea of subverting Erik Alm's intended route for this highly linear map, by using a Zero Press for the first time in a No Damage challenge. You can find out more about Zero Master's discovery of the technique here: doomworld.com/forum/topic/95544-a-new-trick-discovery-zero-press
The chaingunner I call the 'Loose Gunner' starts in the red key building, at the window facing the Town Square. I cannot avoid him being activated and his movement within the building is unpredictable. In some attempts I got the better of him at the back of the building (opposite the BFG secret) but he also came down the stairs sometimes soon after I made the Zero Press, causing extra danger with his unexpected arrival when I'm dealing with the Hell Knights.
Another interesting point is that my solution for fighting the gang of 3 cyberdemons as safely as possible was to make the SR50 jump from the red key building, but it turned out very neatly to ALSO help me activate the third shotgun guy at the red brick lift, which is the crucial step in the whole Zero Press strategy. Even though that BFG shot on the last two shotgun guys looks perfectly safe, I still screwed it up at least once :-(
The new strategy also tempted me to use the BFG to deal with the plasma rifle fight quickly. This works pretty well but I wasn't convinced it was reliable enough, so I stuck with the safe strategy shown in the video.

I am grateful to PartyCrasher and Starduster for laying the groundwork in demonstrating the SR50 lineskip at the start of the map. Without their efforts, I could not have maxed this map without taking damage. PartyCrasher first showed how to do it: youtube.com/watch?v=R-SZyHEj6zQ Then Starduster set out instructions for the trick: See their 2:51.51 demo on the DSDA link above.
I started out practising the skip using Starduster's instructions and actually succeeded first time! However, the precision of one of the steps was not something I was getting consistently, so instead I focused on the position Starduster ended up in before starting the SR50, and tried to find my own visual cues to line up the same spot. The results were at least 70-80% consistent with practice.
When speedrunning the map, I had to lose accuracy in the setup, but in the later live streams, I found that becoming a bit more careful with the setup prevented my fingers from hurting with the SR50-ing.

Whatever possessed me to speedrun this map for No Damage? Well, in the end, I got a pretty good run, even if I do say so myself, but the repetitive closets of mid-tier enemies together with the threat of archviles undoing our hard work makes this one of Scythe's most annoying maps to do Reality at speed. Not to mention that getting the first Pain Elemental to approach reliably is very difficult; she can get trapped behind the platformed archvile and then spawn a lot of daughters when I come into view. With the thousands of attempts there were many entertaining ones that didn't make the final cut of the video, including one in which I accidentally SR40'd out of a window, a trick that can be done on purpose (e.g. by Kimo Xvirus in their sub-10 second UV Speed demo).

Erik Alm blesses us with the 2nd highest monster count in the megawad, including 14 cyberdemons. Yet the two invulnerabilities are enough to make No Damage surprisingly doable, and I'm disappointed I didn't succeed in fewer attempts. There are no hitscanners at all, so the Pain Elementals and their progeny are the most dangerous enemies, closely followed by the cyberdemons.

This video comprises umpteen (an actual number) demos, mostly in clip form, for the challenge of scoring all monsters and the one secret from a pistol start on Scythe's Map 25 'Envy', while taking no damage, whatsoever (a.k.a. UV Max + Reality). Included are the personal best demos of myself and Cilian, one of which is the new UV Max + Reality World Record. My first success also includes items for No Damage Completion. There is commentary throughout the video, much of it recorded live as I streamed my attempts on Twitch. Follow me at twitch.tv/pjplaysdoom

This map is probably my least favourite in Scythe, not because of the spiders per se, but that without the edge-cheese tactic the group of cacodemons in the outdoor area is very harsh indeed. I am grateful for iddq_tea's suggestions in the chat, and for Cilian's efforts to help me beat their Personal Best run! I broke my own record for most attempts at one challenge (7745, up over 500 from Bloodfalls in summer 2023), purely due to stubbornness after Cilian set such a challenging target for me. Even this map grew on me as we discovered more tactics together on stream. Editing this video has been tough, and to be honest it ended up longer than I intended --- share any constructive criticism please.

This video comprises several demos, some in clip form, for the challenge of scoring all monsters & secrets on Ultra Violence from a pistol start on Scythe's Map 24 'Hatred', while taking No Damage whatsover, a.k.a. UV Max + Reality. In the first successful demo, I also get all items, a.k.a. No Damage Completion. Then I speedrun the challenge, culminating in my Personal Best demo, but Cilian, watching my attempts live on Twitch, intervenes with their own demo before going on to record the UV Max + Reality World Record demo themselves. There is a great deal of live commentary, broadcast by myself live on Twitch, but also post-production commentary, including my reaction to Cilian's demos.
Thanks to Cilian for agreeing to me including their comments in my video, and for teaching me how bad I am at fighting revenants.
This map has only one hitscanner, the Mastermind. However the cyberdemon's slight elevation combined with his positioning in an awkward corner, makes him a formidable opponent while not helping with infighting very much, apart from a nice tactic I found of getting him to hit the wall under the backpack ledge, which is very RNG-dependent. Erik Alm's use of the red key is very strange, because you never actually use the key --- but grabbing it is necessary to lower the yellow key, which is required to exit.
I was enjoying the map when Cilian started running it, however I didn't have much appetite left for changing my route. In any case, I am not very good at dodging revenants at speed, so I won't return to this map unless I am more confident with the skeletons. Cilian's previous lack of reputation as a speedrunner contributed a little to my frustration, but some maps really suit a player!!

This video comprises dozens of clips, including outtakes and successful runs, for the challenge of scoring all monsters from a pistol start on Scythe's Map 23 'Anger' while taking No Damage whatsoever, a.k.a. UV Max + Reality (map has no secrets). For my first successful run I also scored all items for a cautious No Damage Completion. I then competed for faster times, culminating in a new World Record Speedrun. There is commentary throughout the video, most of it streamed live on Twitch as I played the map.
In the end I may have gone overboard including the speedrunning attempts, it is hard to summarise nearly 6000 attempts over 20+ livestreams! One tactic I did not manage to include in the video is that when speedrunning in the opening area, I deliberately went close to the corner nearest the blue door to activate pinkies that would often end up close to the sniping archvile's pillar, so that when I rocketed that archvile, the pinkies would die to splash damage. However, those pinkies would also often end up in the opening area, which was not ideal.
This map has only one hitscanner, although he can be revived at the end. The cyberdemons are very difficult to kill quickly and safely, and Erik Alm makes it tricky to use them for infighting when playing carefully. Of course, the UV Max record run (Kinetic's 1:22 as of April 2024) releases pretty much everything to use the cybers effectively, but I never seriously contemplated such chaos for No Damage. The Twitch chat allowed me to tolerate far more frustration than would have otherwise been possible; thanks everyone! This video comprises mostly one successful run but includes a few dozen outtakes for the challenge of scoring all monsters and secrets on all nine maps of Ultimate Doom's Episode 3 'Inferno' from a pistol start on E3M1 without taking any damage, whatsoever, at speed; a.k.a. 'UV Max + Reality'.
There is commentary throughout the video, most of it added in post-production but with some live commentary broadcast on Twitch as I attempted the challenge. Follow me at: twitch.tv/pjplaysdoom
After every map of the successful run, there is analysis including outtakes that ended on that map, followed by a preview of the next map. You can skip to the next map using the chapters if you wish.
Thanks to Coincident for the transparent logo in the thumbnail --- I also 'borrow' some commentary from his Inferno UV Max demo in Pandemonium.
I have covered Inferno so much with my pistol-start No Damage challenges that I did not want to spend much time with a cautious version of Max + Reality on the episode, which would have duplicated a great deal of my previous videos, and would be well over an hour long. Instead, in January 2024, I launched into speedrunning this challenge, achieving my first successful run after just 104 attempts.
That demo was nowhere near as entertaining as the 2nd success, the one featured in this video. With nearly 1000 consecutive failures, nerves were becoming a much bigger issue for me, but I had a change of attitude by accepting that it wasn't going to be the cleanest of runs --- I was just determined to score another success, even if it had to be ugly.
------------------------------ Maths Part -------------------------------------------------
As promised in the video, here is some tic-counting Maths that would have made the screen too cluttered IMO: On Map 5, I make trips in and out of the secret area which houses an imp and a single rocket. I found setups that allow me to enter the secret, turn around and then leave pretty quickly. To enter, I stand against the doortrack on the right side, facing the stairs. From this position, running forwards, it takes about 18 tics to enter the slime from when I try to run, and another 14 tics to leave the slime. If I try to move at 29 seconds mod 32, each 1 second = 35 tics = 3 tics mod 32 so 29 seconds = 87 tics mod 32 = 87 - 32 - 32 = 23 tics mod 32. I therefore enter the slime at about 23 + 18 = 41 = 41 - 32 = 9 tics mod 32, and leave the slime 14 tics later at 23 tics mod 32, comfortably before the next pain tic. I make the return journey with my back against the end of the passageway, where there is a window to a room below. I set off from there 4 seconds after the start of the first trip, at 1 second mod 32 (29 + 4 = 33 = 1 mod 32). From when I try to run, it takes me about 41 tics to enter the slime and another 10 tics to reach safety. Starting at 1 second mod 32 = 3 tics mod 32 means I enter slime at about 3 + 41 - 32 = 12 tics mod 32. Leaving danger 10 tics later at 22 tics mod 32 is still 10 tics before the next pain tic. In the video I go at 1:27.5 and 1:31.5 for these two trips, each is 5.5 seconds before the recommended times of 1:33 and 1:37 using 6 weapon-bob cycles = 5.49 seconds.
On Map 7 for the moment that I drop down towards the cacodemon guarding the radiation suits, I set up holding my plasma rifle with the top of the rifle within one pixel of a line on the brickwork. If I go too far forwards and my gun goes over the brickwork line, it is disaster and I fall into the blood channel. Running from further back causes me to hit the wall on the way down, so is actually slower! From this position I try to run at 26 seconds mod 32 (e.g. 1:09 in the video by the 11 second rule, 0:58 is ideal). 26 seconds mod 32 = 26 x 3 = 78 tics mod 32 = 14 tics mod 32. About 23 tics later I hit the damaging blood, at 14 + 23 - 32 = 5 tics mod 32. I reach safety after another 20 tics. In the video I actually screwed up my starting position and DID hit the wall, exiting damaging floor with just 2 tics to spare!!
I have already found many improvements to the route, so this is hopefully just a temporary World Record until I take on this challenge again sometime --- watch this space!

Please comment about the editing of the outtakes, which is a little different in this video --- I like to experiment with my intros and I would appreciate any feedback. The technique of tic counting has come so far that it doesn't even surprise me that in the successful run every trip through poison was executed within 2 tics of the intended timing and not a single attempt at this challenge was ended by damaging floor. The extreme difficulty of the previous map 'Bloodfalls' has improved my consistency in this respect.
Despite using the secret at the side of the starting area early on for additional supplies, the scarcity of ammo forced me to activate many enemies in those initial stages of the route. The cages restrict Doomguy's movement while allowing the monsters to attack us from a variety of angles.
For my next challenge, it is time to return to Ultimate Doom and Inferno for UV Max + Reality. It's going to be tough and, after succeeding the first time, I will be figuring out how to save time to submit a fast speedrunning time.

Maybe the high number of attempts I needed on this challenge would have been lower if I had started playing the map with more cautious tactics to get a successful run under my belt sooner. I don't believe I was disrespectful of the map's difficulty --- even though there are no hitscan enemies at all, the cyberdemon is in a fairly narrow area and the revenants are numerous. Behind the blue door is another tricky BFG shot: I want to kill the vile and get plenty of tracers on the other enemies too; it just doesn't happen sometimes because the nobles arrive unpredictably by teleporting.

This is a beautiful map, made in Pavera's less detailed, more traditional style. There are more No Damage challenges to come from Arrival, which will get harder than this. In the opening area, I occasionally activated the group of lost souls early, which caused chaos. It is tricky to decide when to use the partial invisibilities, which at first I thought might be redundant. I probably could have grabbed the large number of armour bonuses in one cave quicker by travelling up and down long lines of them instead of going from side to side. However, this was never intended to be a 'proper' speedrun, just a relatively quick Reality run --- let me know in the comments if you like this format.

Speedrunning records are maintained by the DSDA (Doom Speed Demos Archive) at: dsdarchive.com/wads/scythe?level=Map+21 Note that DrinkyPooTournament's demo has not been submitted.
I suppose I can only 'blame' myself for encouraging my audience to take up Reality speedrunning when I suddenly get some competition in the chat! Getting world records too easily is not very interesting, so I welcome DrinkyPooTournament's intervention. This map is small, even by Scythe standards, introducing the hellish theme of episode 3 effectively. The behaviour of lost souls is infuriating, whether they block my path to much-needed ammo, creep through windows to attack me near the exit, or get spawned through a door by the exploding Pain Elemental!
DrinkyPooTournament says the following about their demo: I watched your route and had some disagreements so I wanted to derive an alternative, my attempts were rapid fire and experimental so their success relies more on the stars aligning (for example you try to fend off lost souls, I flat out ignore them and hope for the best) It was definitely a fluke at only ~100 attempts, but my other successful runs arrived at around 1:10 so I'm sure it's the playstyle, and that this aggression on the current route could make for a sub minute time (I got there on failed attempts), however I think just copying 4shockblast and hoping for reality is likelier...
Maybe one of us will return to this map in the future, but it is most unusual for my Reality record time to be just 16 seconds outside the UV Max record. OK, after Bloodfalls I had a little difficulty with motivation because Doom 2's Map 25 had been such a huge deal for me. I don't dislike this map at all and I enjoy the gimmick with the armour bonuses. However, the lack of ammo was always a concern and my supplies ran low despite the large amounts of infighting. For No Damage it is very helpful that the first two 'traps' I visit can be cheesed by not making a sound. The 36 chaingunners in the thumbnail though, are buried in the floor to 'pop up', instead of teleporting in, so I could not do the same with that fight.
For the one mandatory trip across damaging floor, when I got cheeky trying a half-second at the start of the video, I was attempting to judge 6 weapon-bob cycles using 6 x 32 tics = 192 tics = 5 seconds and 17 tics, or 5.49 seconds. Subtracting this time from the 'ideal time' of 0:36.00 seconds means that starting to move on 0:30.51 would have worked, but I went too early. Feel free to ask me in the comments about tic-counting calculations such as these --- the technique was introduced in my 'Living End' video of late 2020: youtu.be/QOO9S7pMtaA

UV Max + Reality. There is commentary throughout the video, much of it streamed live on Twitch as I played the game. This culminates in the new World Record demo.
Thanks to Coincident for the transparent Doom 2 logo in the thumbnail. Thanks to Brayden 'AD-79' Hart --- I borrowed the music from Arrival Map 06 for the analysis sections of the video.
Major thanks to NightTerror for inspiring me to speedrun this very challenging map --- I had a strategy for slow cautious No Damage play on this poison-packed hitscanner hell and then was shocked to see Terror's demo in December 2022. The student of tic-counting had done very well, but the teacher is not to be outdone! His manoeuvre into the side area with barrels was harder than any of my journeys across the damaging blood. So many things that went wrong during attempts did not make it into this video --- the hitscanners near the plasma rifle troubled me a great deal until I found a more consistent way of peek-a-booing them. Occasionally a sergeant or zombie would get stuck in the side area with barrels and surprise me when I had just killed the revenant. And a run that would have improved on the World Record was invalid because I didn't notice the archvile revived an imp just before the vile died.
Since the SR50 to the revenant arena was the most precise poison journey, the Bus Timetable for Route Two had to be organised around that SR50, so that other trips were done at times that were slightly less than ideal, but this did not harm their reliability.
To discover the setups for the poison journeys, I would make training maps in DoomBuilder so that my starting position is close to the relevant section of blood. Then I recorded demos of me running from various potential start points, playing back the demos to time how many tics it took to enter the blood and for how long I was then on the damaging floor. More detail on the calculations:
SR50 to Revenant Arena --- standing in the corner with specific pixels lined up on the wall, when I try to start the SR50 it takes 4 tics to actually move, then 8 more tics to get on the blood. I am on the blood for 26 tics. If we aim to get on the blood 3 tics after a multiple of 32 (to be off at 29 mod 32), we should try to move 8 + 4 = 12 tics sooner, so 3 - 12 = -9 + 32 = 23 tics mod 32 is an ideal time to try to move. 1 second = 1 cycle of 32 tics + 3 more, so 1 second = 3 tics mod 32. Hence 29 seconds = 29 x 3 = 87 = 87 - 32 - 32 = 23 tics mod 32 as desired. (we are always free to add or subtract 32 as only the remainders mod 32 matter for the calculation). So 29 seconds mod 32 is ideal and we can use the 11 second rule once on either side to go at either 29 - 11 = 18 seconds mod 32 or 29 + 11 - 32 = 8 seconds mod 32. In the video I refer to the 'whole second opportunity' at 18 seconds, but put the more correct time of 0:18.03 on screen to correct for the 1 tic error caused by subtracting 11 seconds from 0:29.00. This is all because 11 seconds = 11 x 3 tics mod 32 = 33 tics = 1 tic mod 32.
The best way to actually calculate good times (at whole seconds) for the SR50 or any other trip, is to use the rule that 1:04 = 64 seconds = 2 x 32 seconds. So for the SR50 around the 3 minute mark, 1:04 x 3 = 3:12 is a multiple of 32. So taking away 3 seconds tells us that 3:09 = 29 seconds mod 32. Adding 11 seconds, 3:20 = 8 sec mod 32 and 3:30 = 18 sec mod 32. Other setups: Entering side area by SR40-ing from a specific knot on the wall facing a specific crack on the opposite wall. SR40 at 19 seconds mod 32. Leaving the side area by SR40-ing from the join in the wall, taking a gently curving path towards the teleporter up to the starting area (which can be an unlucky line-skip sometimes!): At 30 seconds mod 32. Dropping down from starting area with the diagonal approach as shown in the video, I walk forwards with the best times at 0, 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31 sec mod 32.

I call this 'No Damage Completion', and speedrun the challenge, culminating in what I call UV Max + Reality World Record, although this is not officially endorsed by the DSDA (Doom Speed Demos Archive). The hitscanners at the start cause a high percentage of failures with the first few seconds, however the map gets a lot more reasonable for No Damage after that. Even the square 'spaceship pad' where we fight the cyberdemon is large enough to reliably avoid splash damage while shooting the SSG at the boss monster. Blowing up multiple imps with rockets is always fun. However, the main issue in this map is the death exit, which I had to use 'idbeholdl' cheat to take a picture for the thumbnail, because the John Romero head is not only surrounded by toxic barrels, but lives in complete darkness. What indignity!
I wasn't sure whether to bring this up in the video, because I would be loathed to get anyone else's Reality demo stripped of its title, but Killer5 has had a Reality demo recognised officially on Sunlust Map 10, despite getting killed by the death exit at the very end of his impressive 15 damageless minutes. So there is a precedent of the DSDA looking kindly upon death-exit damage as not counting against a No Damage achievement. The heart of the issue is that map-makers are using death exits purely as a tool to deprive continuous players of their weapons in the next map, to divide a Doom 2 megawad into episodes. When we enter a death exit, we are essentially just exiting; the map is completed. I don't believe that allowing exceptions would cause problems with ambiguity, although I do understand those concerns.
Let me know what you think in the comments --- are death exits an acceptable exception to the Reality rule? Coming next it's Bloodfalls! I will be going for sub X:XX (time target to be revealed) on Twitch from Monday 17th July 2023 at 20:00 GMT + 1. It's going to be hard to beat NightTerror, but let's go for it!!

The urge to train for the challenge of Map 25 'Bloodfalls' certainly helped me to play ruthlessly and avoid silly mistakes --- from Map 18 onwards, this continues a run of now 7 consecutive maps which I have No Damage Completed in no more than 10 attempts each. The plentiful number of radiation suits and large expanses of damaging floor break up this map into distinct 'fights'. Fortunately for No Damage tactics, we can easily reach the suit near the invulnerability pit without stepping onto the slime first. By modern standards, the plain walls are ugly, yet this Sandy Petersen creation is one of my favourite Doom 2 levels because of the unique challenge posed by the narrow walkways.
When I heard the fireball explode near the end of the map, I assumed that a no-clipping projectile had struck a wall nearby. The truth, as found by Doom super-sleuth Decino, turned out to be far stranger. The Hell Knight fireball, that had left the map geometry 15 minutes earlier, had looped around the space several times by dint of the maximum co-ordinate values for x/y being 2^15 - 1 = 32767. When it exploded, it was attempting to loop around again but this took it into a region where the floor height was higher than its current z co-ordinate, so it hit an invisible 'wall'. I don't understand how floor heights extend into the void --- maybe Decino will explain this in the future. The explosion took place thousands of map units from Doomguy's location, but sounded loudly because the distance calculation overflowed, so the sound volume was as though the event was nearby. So this was a combination of collision detection failing, position co-ordinates overflowing several times and overflowing AGAIN in the calculation of sound volume.

I may have underestimated this map a little --- the wandering zombies that snipe at you through windows are hazardous, especially with arachnotrons making so much noise. Although an archvile near the end is intimidating, I must trust my strategy and execute the tactics as planned. With no corpses to revive and plenty of cover for Doomguy, the threat is manageable.
Erik Alm made a slightly larger level here, so I did not speedrun it in the same video. If completing cautiously takes over 10/15 minutes, that seems like enough content in of itself.

The strategy for this beautiful level was conceived in early 2021 but I save up Sunlust challenges, because so little of this megawad is sufficiently doable for No Damage. Having said that, there is more to come! The non-linearity of the map meant that I could experiment with the order of the monster traps, sometimes just to spare my sanity because of the relentless failures at the plasma rifle fight, but also sometimes discovering permanent improvements in the route --- such as when I discovered how effective the chaingun was at the 'blue key garden'.
Let me know what you think about the on-screen graphics, especially the sped-up footage and the tic-counting explanations. Tic counting is the technique of moving precisely enough in space/time to avoid taking damage from damaging floors. I explained it for the first time in my 'Living End' video from October 2020, available at: youtu.be/QOO9S7pMtaA None of the lava journeys in 'Forgotten Shrine' were difficult as such, I believe I only went wrong with them twice in total and on one of those occasions I forgot to have autorun on at the rocket launcher fight, pretty embarrassing!
One interesting story that developed during the streams which didn't make it into the video: The imp behind the shotgun close to the Berserk secret would occasionally jump out of his little cave when killed. Once the corpse fell a long way towards me and I said something about him auditioning for a talent show. Follow me on Twitch so you don't miss out on such silliness:

Whether you love this map or not, it certainly is memorable. Hitscanners and Pain Elementals are the main sources of difficulty when playing for No Damage. The eponymous barrels caused Decino problems on Nightmare, but when the chaingunners have to wait a while after being activated before they attack on Ultra Violence, they don't blow up the barrels as we run past. To further explain the fancy BFG shot near the exit: by firing a BFG ball due south, that ensures that after I teleport the 40 tracers fan out in a 90 degree arc from my new location, between SouthWest and SouthEast. This is why all the barrels in front of me explode, but the two immediately next to me don't (they are due West and East of my location). I'm not quite sure why this means the chaingunners don't hit me, though.
Sunday 23rd April 2023 at 4pm GMT + 1 I take on Sunlust Map 03 Live on Twitch. This map has several difficult fights and tic counting for damaging floor. In this innocuous-looking map which has only 25 enemies, the SR50 jump to tag the secret and ATTEMPT to telefrag the Mastermind was frustratingly hard to pull off consistently. Even the speedrunner Kyle McAwesome, who at the time of writing holds the UV Max record for this map, found the jump very difficult. Thanks to LadyMistDragon for suggesting Map 03 in the comments for my Doom 2 Map 22 'The Catacombs' video.
My hardest yet (as of March 2023) cautious No Damage Completion challenge! I've employed a few new tricks to try to make the video entertaining, while also capturing the tension of, for example, trying to snipe a chaingunner on a high ledge nearly half an hour into an attempt, knowing that any mistake could send me back to the start.
As for the 'Pilgrim Chaingunner' in the thumbnail --- at first, even after I had finished investigating the map and started attempts, I just assumed that his initial position was close to the window where I usually killed him. When he went missing in one run, though, I became curious and played back a previous demo to discover the extraordinary journey he took to reach that position. Two gunners at the bottom of a flight of stairs bump into each other repeatedly until one is pseudo-randomly released to make the long approach towards DoomGuy.
So the legend of the 'Pilgrim' was born. But I never could have guessed how dramatically he would Arrive in my successful run (see what I did there?)
I am grateful to BigMacDavis, Decino & SoBad for making me aware of how great Arrival is, and I hope my playing style brings something different to the party. Of course I hope to honour the creation of Walker Wright and Brayden Hart with this video too.

For the first 10 minutes of the video, No Damage Completion requires all items as well as monsters and secrets from a pistol start with no damage taken. For the speedrunning, I lose the items requirement so it is UV Max + Reality. I therefore compete with the same rules as GarrettChan (3:00 in 2020) and 4ShockBlast (2:41 in 2016), who had both previously ran this map.
It is unusual for me to speedrun a map with one previous Reality demo on the archive, let alone two. This gave me the chance to learn from those who had gone before me. However, I didn't expect to have such a brilliant 'light-bulb' moment as when I realised that GarrettChan's route could be adapted to take the World Record.
The discovery happened when I wasn't streaming and to recreate it for the video, I was recording the sound through OBS directly instead of XBox Game Bar because Game Bar has a bug if I record while playing (I usually record demos as I stream and use Game Bar to capture footage afterwards). The clip shows me reloading a saved game, so I cannot use a demo for this. That's why the sound is a little strange at that part of the video.
Admittedly, I had pretty lucky RNG to succeed at the new strategy so quickly. For the WR run, having such an incredible start made me nervous, so I lost a bit of time in the rest of the demo. Fortunately I just about avoided getting hurt! I found out how good that run was by persevering for another 1500 attempts (not seen in the video) and not coming very close to beating it.
4ShockBlast is an inspiration, I'm sure, to many speedrunners and I certainly don't expect to beat him again. He does have a Reality record on Map 07 though...
Speaking of previous records, I will be tackling NightTerror's Map 25 UV Max + Reality (7:15 in Dec 2022) at some point in 2023, so following me on Twitch will let you catch me attempting that and many other No Damage challenges: twitch.tv/pjplaysdoom NightTerror's video is available at youtube.com/watch?v=u6ppVJPevRY&t=313s

Being supported live on Twitch really helped me to play this map a lot longer than would have been otherwise enjoyable. Thanks to everyone who contributed on stream, especially the individual whose name escapes me (sorry!) who suggested that I could insta-switch to the rocket launcher after grabbing the Berserk early in the route. I doubted that I could do it consistently, but soon the move was second nature. Summarising 40+ hours of streams for a sub-20 minute video is hard, so you might get the impression that starting fights with the Mancubus was easy. I can assure you that thousands of attempts ended after about 10-15 seconds because the other monsters wouldn't hit the fat man, or he didn't fight back.
Coming back after illness on New Year's Day meant I felt more relaxed due to me not expecting to play well. It turns out that the virus made me feel terrible for a week but did not destroy my muscle memory for this classic opening map. I did accidentally change the HUD, so we see DoomGuy's face towards the end of the video!
The new World Record run has a good monster infight at the start, but not one of the very best, so with even more luck I would have gotten under 2:50. However, that is nitpicking because when I achieved 3:52 on 13th December, even going under 3:30 seemed like an ambitious target. After all, I tried my best and didn't get under 4 minutes in 2021! I definitely move better when speedrunning than I used to.

Also there are clips of Decino's commentary, including at the very start. Sunder is a popular Boom-compatible Doom 2 megawad first published by Insane Gazebo in 2009, but still a work in progress! Decino played the 2009 version, which differs only in the textures, and his video 'Sunder (2009) - MAP01: Python (Ultra-Violence 100%)' can be seen here:
I had already considered this map for No Damage tactics when Decino dropped his video. When I saw him make so many errors this increased my motivation to get a perfect demo myself. The chaingunners, as the only hitscanners, would be not much of an issue were it not for the Boom mechanics that allow them to not only be revived by archviles but also drop down onto the floor of the main building. The successful run happened with a smaller audience on stream, unfortunately. Thanks to everyone who tuned in live. If this video is well received I may speedrun the challenge --- it won't be easy to find ways to clear up the archviles quickly without being hurt though!
Let me know your thoughts on the camera shots used; I didn't want to cut footage much from the successful demo because of suspense, so I hope that seeing other angles makes for better entertainment.

No Damage Completion. The challenge is taken on cautiously at first but is then speedran, culminating in a new UV Max + Reality + Items World Record. There is commentary throughout the video, most of it recorded live as I streamed my attempts on Twitch.
This level has no hitscanners at all, so, when taken on carefully and with good foreknowledge of the teleport ambushes, it is quite easy for No Damage play. However, I managed to screw up pretty badly at this and the embarrassing results are included in the first half of the video.
Speedrunning makes any No Damage challenge difficult because I am constantly looking for ways to cut corners and get away with it. The linearity of the map meant there wasn't much variation possible in the order I went, except that it is often alluring to activate enemies and run away. However, this can end up wasting time, what with having to round up the stragglers before exiting.
Erik Alm allows the player to cheese traps quite often by opening and closing doors, otherwise the final horde of enemies released would be very intimidating!
The eagle-eyed viewer may notice that the attempt numbers at the top left of the screen during the live stream don't quite match the official attempt numbers I added to the video afterwards. That's because when I rename a successful demo to distinguish it from the others, DSDA Doom thinks that attempt number hasn't been written yet, and re-issues it instead of incrementing the attempt counter by one. In future, I will copy successful demos to another folder before renaming them.

As this is written in November 2022, it's been quite a break since our last Valiant No Damage run, which was Map 14 'Implosion' in June 2021. As well as the Valiant staples of the metal pinkies, extra-spiky imps and souped up bullet-firing weapons, this super-secret map throws ghost versions of revenants, archviles and the metal pinkies at Doomguy. It's no wonder that unsuspecting players can die to this level. On a totally unrelated note ;-), thanks to Coincident for the transparent logo in the thumbnail.
However, Skillsaw takes it easy on the difficulty by dialling back the health on most of the ghostly enemies. That said, the much tankier daedabuses are quite a challenge to get used to --- I had to keep lecturing myself on stream not to dodge them like normal Mancubi.
With just 4 hitscanners out of 125 monsters, most of the difficulty is eased by practising the fights ahead of time. This video culminates in the new World Record demo (starting at 8:00), after clips of 10 outtakes, for the challenge of running continuously through Ultimate Doom's 3rd Episode 'Inferno' from the start of E3M1 to the exit on E3M8 without taking any damage, as quickly as possible: a.k.a. UV Speed + Reality. There is commentary throughout the video, mostly recorded live on the Twitch streams as I played.
This video is a follow-up to my previous one of September 2022: youtu.be/XO98JshQM10
for which I unwittingly recorded an invalid 'World Record' for the same challenge in 7:25. Fortunately I was able to improve upon that time with a valid record run for this video, within 24 hours of the DSDA's 4ShockBlast informing me of my complevel mistake (see more detail below).
When 4ShockBlast let me know the 7:25 run I had submitted had the wrong complevel, this meant the demo had been recorded with not quite the correct Doom engine for Ultimate Doom. During the history of Classic Doom, the iwad creators and modders have changed the mechanics of the game in small but significant ways, giving us the variety of complevels we have today. Unfortunately, the changes are often so subtle that it is almost impossible to tell if you have recorded a demo on the wrong setting. One exception is that on complevel 4, the player falls after teleporting if arriving at a location with a lower floor.
It may have been the excitement of streaming for the first time that led to me omitting the '-complevel 3' command from my batchfile used to record the so-called 'phoney attempts' leading up to the 7:25 'WR' in early September 2022. Suffice to say, I won't be making this mistake again (!) When the complevel command wasn't there, DSDA-Doom used complevel 21 as a default and the main differences, as kindly explained by 4ShockBlast, are: a) Different RNG behaviour b) Altered collision detection c) Objects can be passed through on death d) Monsters fall off ledges (Boom feature).
On 2nd October as I ran the challenge again, I was briefly concerned that the incorrect complevel could have helped make my strategy work for the 7:25 demo, but my mind was soon put at rest as everything soon felt very familiar and I did not notice the altered game engine.
This video was particularly tricky to make because a large amount of repetition was inevitable because I did this challenge before (twice, if you count the valid 11:29 and invalid 7:25 videos!). I hope I've succeeded in giving this video a slightly different emphasis.
Thanks again to all who joined me on stream, especially TedTheKay who has made a beautiful intermission screen so I won't look like such a newbie. !!! Sorry Guys !!! The old 11:29 run is STILL the World Record because I missed out a COMPLEVEL command in the batchfile I used to record the attempts. By not specifying -complevel 3, the attempts recorded in complevel 21 by accident, so the final 'record' is not valid! I WILL do this challenge again and get a valid sub 7:30 demo, you can count on that! Thanks to 4ShockBlast for pointing out this error. This is only a temporary problem, I will get a valid run, I'm sure of it!
This video comprises 30 demos, mostly in clip form, including 3 successful demos, for the challenge of running through Ultimate Doom's 3rd episode 'Inferno' playing continuously from E3M1 to the exit on E3M8 without taking any damage, whatsoever, at speed. This is known as UV Speed + Reality. There is commentary throughout the video, most of it recorded live as I streamed my attempts on Twitch. A 'Live' icon appears at the top right corner to indicate live comments, otherwise the commentary you hear was added after the gameplay.
Yes guys, it's been a long time between YouTube uploads, because I started streaming on Twitch and chose to revisit my episode challenge after a pregnant pause from Inferno (literally, 9 months!)
When I recorded the 11:29 record run on Boxing Day 2021 (video did well in January '22, see youtu.be/WMCy4BJ3Da4 ), I already had ideas for making Slough of Despair faster and Limbo, too, so sub-10 minutes seemed reasonable. However, I wanted to wait until I had the appetite to inspect all parts of the route for potential improvements, especially being more economical with my BFG usage. I actually had 40 cells to spare at the end of the old record, which is surely some sort of crime against speedrunning!
In this video, I try to highlight various changes from the old route to the new one. Here's something that didn't make the cut: When jumping into the damaging blood on Limbo, I actually spent fewer tics on the poison in the old 11:29 demo --- I just changed habits when practising for this new record; not a deliberate choice but my method still worked consistently so it didn't come to my attention. In summary, walking forwards until I land on the blood is better because when I run I hit the wall and drop vertically. However, the running still worked adequately.
Inferno has even more to offer for No Damage challenges --- when I have gotten used to Twitch a little more and hopefully grown the audience a little, I will be taking on UV Max + Reality, slowly and carefully. The successful demo will be very long, perhaps a few hours, so I would really appreciate your support live on stream. I will continue to summarise my No Damage challenges for YouTube as well.
Thanks again to Coincident for the transparent Ultimate Doom logo and decino for teaching us all how BFG tracers work. Those shots on M5 and M7 in particular are very satisfying. Particular thanks to TedTheKay for not only being my first ever chatter on Twitch but also suggesting a tactic on Slough of Despair which I had briefly tried in the months previous but had dismissed for being too high-risk. Any remaining secrets are found and shown later in the video. There is commentary throughout, mostly recorded live as I played.

Several factors made me expect a more difficult experience on this map --- not least the times I died in Map 05, but also accidentally seeing the archvile in Decino's thumbnail and finding plasma ammo for a weapon I didn't have.
Let me know in the comments of any changes you notice from previous videos, some of which may be due to me getting used to a new computer setup. No Damage Completion. There is commentary throughout the video, mostly recorded live as I played.
This Sandy Petersen map is one that I considered impossible or too hard for No Damage play for a very long time --- the teleporting monsters intimidated me. The group of shotgun guys all get activated when Doomguy makes a noise in their area, but if any of them teleport away they become even more dangerous because when we teleport into a room with an active enemy, the monster knows where we are and we are temporarily a sitting duck. That is especially true when imps teleport into the small square room in the yellow key area. I looked for splash damage tactics with rockets but the only imp I could reliably kill before activating the mancubi/imps group was an imp that wouldn't teleport anyway because it started in front of the teleporter.
I should be grateful that it is possible to drop onto a radiation suit in the final room, but instead I just want to whinge about how awkwardly positioned it is, not tucked into a corner at all! Although, with practice, I got better at not being poisoned, there is no reliable method I found that completely eliminated the risk. Lining up a perfectly timed tic counting manoeuvre isn't really doable for me when imps and hell knights are attacking.
In that final area, I didn't do myself any favours when I spent a few seconds trash talking some dead chaingunners while I was invulnerable and should have been super shotgun-shooting some imps at close range when their fireballs couldn't hurt me!
Let me know what you guys think about the on screen graphics, cuckoo clock noises, or anything else you like or dislike about this video --- I welcome constructive criticism. Doom 2 is getting harder in the 20s, although Map 22 has already been speedran for Reality by 4Shockblast, among others.

In the first half, the successful run is made cautiously to minimise risk; then the challenge is taken on at speed, culminating in the new UV Max + Reality + Items World Record demo at the end of the video. There is commentary throughout the video, mostly recorded live as I played.
For over a dozen outtakes recorded just before and including the World Record demo, all of those demos are presented as though I was live streaming at the time (sort of), with a fictional chat, which provides a drama all of its own, in addition to the action unfolding in the game. My intention is to build suspense so that if you don't use chapters to skip ahead to the WR demo, you won't know when it has started --- it will look like any other attempt from the beginning. Let me know in the comments what you think of this experimental format --- I welcome constructive criticism.
Scythe is a popular vanilla-compatible 32-map Doom 2 megawad completed in 2003 by Erik Alm and Kim 'Torn' Bach, which can be downloaded for free from: doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/scythe
This map is a pretty easy one for No Damage play, especially with the RNG tactic at the start which renders two of the three hitscan enemies no threat. The chaingunner was quite awkward for speedrunning the challenge --- any map becomes difficult for No Damage when I try to go very fast, and this was no exception. With Tatsurd-cacocaco's UV Max record standing at just over 1 and a half minutes, just going sub 2:30 felt very impressive when taking no damage. So my reaction at the end of the World Record demo was extreme because I could scarcely believe that I had pulled off my skills without error at the same time as getting so lucky with caco/hell knight infighting and then with the baron fighting the revenant. Also, the telefrag of the archvile on the altar has about a 40 per cent success rate --- I did 20 successive trials in which I varied my timing a great deal, with 8 successes. Quite apart from the fact that when I teleported to the altar for a second time, I was fully expecting the imps to hit me, I still don't know how I managed to dodge everything!
Just to clarify, when I run away from the SSG pickup, I am OK with leaving spectres alive but not imps, because if the imps infight the spectres the monsters seem to be more of a danger for getting in my way later on.
For the fake chat, I hope it motivates some viewers to watch the final sections of the video multiple times to understand what is going on. When I imagined the concept, I only later realised that I would need to explain why I wasn't acknowledging my 'supporters', so one thing led to another! Mapmaker Tarnsman certainly enjoys hitscanner traps, and I loved this challenge, once I had found a reasonably consistent method at the frightening Green Armour Trap, which took chunks out of Decino in his Blind run of this level - watch that video here:
Fortunately 2 rockets turn out to be enough! Running for the shotgun at the beginning is hair-raising, but not as dangerous as I first thought. Opening the first door and hiding before going for the weapon is a good tactic when it works (preventing sergeants and zombies from seeing me sooner than necessary), however when I failed to hide well enough I would stay in the starting room and tough it out from there. This rarely worked --- see the Outro for example outtakes.

This No Damage challenge introduces a new tactic, because the Spider Mastermind, the only hitscanner in the level, is so hard to combat safely. The fairly tedious but straightforward early stages make the stress of the big fights later on so much worse. Fortunately, the big Momma doesn't always shoot accurately, so the unsuspecting Hell Knights can be hit. However, the mess that is left behind when the boss dies can be extremely dangerous. Shooting the smaller spiders efficiently in the early part helps to save rockets for later, which can really help prevent having to grab more ammo under pressure from Hell Knights or revenants during the difficult fights.
I love that mapmaker Cyriak shows us familiar scenery from Map 01 through the windows of the eponymous reception. It's unusual for a megawad to tie together so beautifully. I've used cameras in this video in an attempt to a) make the safe tactics look more interesting and b) show off Cyriak's lovely map geometry. My longest ever single-map speedrun to date (as of May 2022) certainly tested my mettle, which may seem strange given that there are no hitscanners in this level. Overmind, in his 2021 run, collected all items (I will ask the DSDA to acknowledge this when I submit my demo) so I challenged myself to do the same because I am a glutton for punishment. There are bonuses scattered all over this sprawling Sandy Petersen map, and no easy way to get powerful weapons quickly without taking a lot of risk with injury. The BFG is not as useful as you might expect, due to its awkward location and the unreliability of grouping up the chunkier enemies. Although I am sure some sort of SR40 or SR50 manoeuvre would help me reach the chainsaw secret quicker, I wasn't confident of doing so reliably while a) under pressure from lost souls and b) near the end of a long speedrun.
Fortunately, everything came together beautifully for the World Record run, which was so astounding that I stopped attempting immediately, knowing that I was already finding the challenge rather repetitive after a half-kilo of tries and I had benefitted from some fluky infighting in the WR --- not only 7 chunky monsters killed but others injured, too.
I will be taking on longer-still single map speedruns in the coming months; this map has certainly helped train my concentration towards those goals.

This map has a lot of sneaky tactics available for No Damage play --- I gave it 5 stars for difficulty back in 2019 mostly due to the trips across poison and awkward positioning of hitscanners. Everyone's favourite infight, between the Spider Mastermind and cyberdemon, is not terribly dangerous, although before the brick wall gives me cover there are a tricky few seconds when the spider can hurt me. Resetting is not annoying there because it's only just over a minute into the route.
The lost souls that unpredictably arrive at various times during the route tend to originate in the westerly building, where I later grab the BFG and tag three secrets. As if that isn't dangerous enough, an exploding Pain Elemental can give me even more girl trouble!
Back in 2019 when I 'completed' this challenge on the wrong complevel, I would snipe at the monsters in the southwest building with my first radiation suit, before heading for the supercharge and zig zag section as in 2022. Later, I would cautiously kill the chaingunners guarding the teleporter in the northerly building, which can easily go wrong, before grabbing the radiation suit, getting the BFG and dragging the last monster from the southwest building through the teleporter by standing in the blood on the other side, as shown in the outro of this video. In those days I wasn't straferunning, so my 2022 strategy didn't even arise as a possibility. I have considered firing the BFG as I go through the teleporter; however the positions of the monsters on the other side might vary too much for the tracers to be guaranteed to kill them.
I would have included the above points in the outro of the video, but it was several minutes long already and very hard work to edit! Let me know in the comments what you think of the 'reverse angle' footage from the southwest building, or any thoughts/questions you may have about tic counting, which was invaluable in making the trips across poison risk free (when I do the Maths correctly!). Thanks to Zero Master for guiding me on the possibility of opening the door to the chaingun secret from the adjacent corridor. The trick does not help me to gain access to that secret (and the one to the north-west of it), so it is essential for this No Damage challenge that I was able to become fairly consistent at travelling through the slime tunnel without being hurt.
For years (2019 to 2022) I have looked at that tunnel with frustration and just a little hope of figuring it out --- the new features of Command and Co-ordinate Displays in DSDA Doom helped me get over the line of solving Knee Deep In the Dead's last unsolved Reality problem, given the utter impossibility of UV Max + Reality on E1M9.
The biggest moment was when I realised that it is best to walk into the tunnel before starting to run and SR40 later, because having too much momentum upon attempting entry to the passageway just causes me to bang Doomguy's head on the wall, which might not cause damage in itself, but destroys all momentum. Ironically, walking is much faster. Until recently (March 2022), I would never have imagined that I could find such a reliable method for the tunnel that I could execute it a little badly and still succeed!
I gave this map 5 stars on the 5 star difficulty scale, but judging how hard it is by 2019 standards ,which is what I usually do, is very difficult (!) because in 2019 I could not have imagined tic counting and using SR40 in this manner. I introduced the tic counting method for safely traversing short stretches of damaging floor, in its more 'basic' form, in my video of Doom 2's Map 29 'The Living End', available at: youtu.be/QOO9S7pMtaA

It's fair to say I had a little less enthusiasm for this map in 2022 upon returning to the classic hitscanner hell. Back in 2020, I was new to speedrunning and did not submit my times to the DSDA, so it went unnoticed that I was accidentally playing the unofficial August 1994 Version 1.666 of this map, which has silver bars in front of the first shotgun guy you meet.
In any case, Ancalagon's performance makes the World Record beyond my reach. If anything, I should probably refrain from using SR40 on short distances because, without Ancalagon's control, the difficulty I have straightening up to shoot at monsters and the times I just get the angle wrong and run into a wall, cost me valuable time.
The RNG grinding is quite addictive, even though it's frustrating. After making 1280 attempts (many of which lasted only a few seconds), I had had enough. Let me know in the comments what you think about any aspect of this video. In particular, I kept it short partly because I didn't want to repeat myself too much from the June 2020 video. I also find that when I look back on my longer speedrunning videos, the commentary on strategies seems too detailed to hold my interest. Hence my effort to be more concise.Scythe Map 31 I Dunno Torn No Damage Completion, With Tricky BFG Grab and Live CommentaryPJ Plays Doom2022-03-26 | 0:00 Intro 0:23 Attempt #1 1:12 Attempt #3 starts 7:25 Corpses at a corner 13:30 Setting up for the Best Fancy Grab 16:58 Co-ordinates, Commands & Keybinds 20:06 I've got it! 21:10 Tragic tracers 24:10 Outro

This video comprises three demos, including one success and two short clips of outtakes, for the challenge of scoring all monsters, items and secrets from a pistol start on Scythe's Map 31 'I Dunno Torn' while sustaining no damage, whatsoever; a.k.a. 'No Damage Completion'. I also challenge myself to utilise one of 4ShockBlast's suggested methods for using SR50 to grab the 'unreachable' BFG, which appears to be impossible to reach due to a teleporter line.
Scythe is a popular 32-map vanilla-compatible Doom 2 megawad completed in 2003 by Erik Alm and Kim 'Torn' Bach (who made Map 31). It can be downloaded for free from: doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/scythe
Thanks again to 4ShockBlast for teaching me the ways of SR50 line-skipping --- messages we exchanged are included in the video with his kind permission.
But for a certain BFG, this could have been a thoroughly pleasant and not-too-hard No Damage challenge, with quirky music and a dungeon-themed environment. However, when I knew that THAT linedef could be skipped, I couldn't bring myself to give up on learning how to do it.
Just learning which keys were required for SR50 was the first step --- I went on to change my mind a few times on the keybinds, before settling on the S,D,F (left hand) and G (right hand) arrangement. My second choice was to use the same keys but pressing two with each hand, but it wasn't as consistent.
Switching from PrBoom+ to DSDA Doom was crucial because when I failed the manoeuvre, I could analyse whether I SR50'd correctly from a bad starting position, or wrongly from a good position, or did everything wrong. I could focus my practice then on SR50 and the setup alternately, gaining confidence slowly but surely.
Despite hours of practice, there is another large hurdle to overcome --- being able to consistently pull off the skip quickly in order to incorporate it into a speedrun of the No Damage challenge. You'll have to watch this space to see when, and if, that happens.Doom 2 Map 19 No Damage Completion, With Live Commentary and Outtake(s).PJ Plays Doom2022-03-09 | 0:00 Intro 0:20 Attempt #2 starts 4:30 A Caco's home is his castle 8:20 At the edge in the central area 12:50 Demonic dental clinic 17:20 Tomato soup, terrible service 22:15 It's Missile Perfection 27:30 Outro

This video comprises one successful demo and one outtake for the challenge of completing Doom 2's Map 19 'The Citadel' from a pistol start while scoring all monsters, items and secrets and sustaining no damage whatsoever, a.k.a. 'No Damage Completion'. There is commentary throughout the video, mostly recorded live as I played. The outro also includes footage from my 'successful' demo from August 2019, which was recorded on complevel 4.
This level is a particularly complex Sandy Petersen map, with even more strategic choices for No Damage play than The Courtyard. Although there are not very many hitscanners, the challenge is tricky because the many small monster traps can be a lot more difficult if tackled in a suboptimal order. The monster-blocking lines in the backpack room which I mention at the end of the video only allow a very small safe space between them, so I don't recommend dropping into that area deliberately, except as a last resort when you are on the square platform and almost surrounded by the pinkies below.
It was such a relief to succeed in not many attempts after my struggles to complete Going Down's Map 28 'Necropolis'. I really needed to prove to myself that I could finish this challenge ruthlessly. The map looks like a real location to some extent and may have inspired castle-themed pwad levels when fan-made maps were first being produced.
Doom 2 has a steep difficulty curve for No Damage play from Map 20 onwards --- you really won't want to miss out on the strategies I employ or the drama that will ensue!
