Virtual Artist Talk with Artists from Human Like You: Confronting the Homeless Crisis Exhibit
updated
In "Sensory Mementos," the artists recreate Earth’s lost scents, evoking memories of home through stories and molecular signatures. In "Interstellar Soundings," sound is used to map the distance of exoplanets, immersing us in the vastness of space.
Together, these works explore the power of memory and the senses. Don’t miss it at “Blended Worlds,” on view through January 4, 2025 at Brand Library & Art Center.

We were thrilled to celebrate this collaboration between the City of Glendale, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and our visionary artists as part of Getty's greater PST ART: Art & Science Collide initiative. Together, we're pushing boundaries, examining urgent topics and asking big questions about the intersections of art and science. We hope you'll join us on this journey as we explore creativity and inspire curiosity together. "Blended Worlds" will be on view through January 4, 2025.

Hayley Barker weaves the personal with the natural world into her landscape paintings. Treating the garden as an altar, she has developed a practice in which her relationship to tending her intimate landscapes is echoed in the evolution and making of her paintings. Lightly layering oil paint on linen, Barker works with subjects that are near and dear: her garden, altars around the home and studio, her childhood home’s yard, the river in Oregon she returns to every summer.

Ian James is an artist who primarily works in photography. Interested in the metaphysics of objects, James restages new age healing and healing device advertising and places these images in relation to one another atop laminate panels. These images indicate how a device should be placed on the body and how one should feel once the device is in use. In addition, James has been making pilgrimages to photograph pyramid architecture throughout North America and Europe as a form of late capitalist pilgrimage. The images he makes become a material substance for cast frame works, assemblages, sculptures, books, videos, a radio station, and a virtual reality environment.

Ingredients / Supplies:
Parchment Paper
12 ounces of White Chocolate
6 ounces of Dark Chocolate
Crushed Peppermint
¼ teaspoons of Peppermint Extract
1 ½ teaspoons of Coconut Oil
Directions:
Step One: Line the bottom and sides of a 8-inch or 9-inch square baking pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil, smoothing out any wrinkles. Or use a lined baking sheet. Set aside.
Bottom Layer: Place 6 ounces of white chocolate in a small heatproof bowl or a liquid measuring cup. Add 1/2 teaspoon of oil. Melt in 20-second increments, stirring vigorously with a silicone spatula spatula or spoon after each increment, until completely melted and smooth. White chocolate and chocolate overheat easily, so it’s important to do this in increments. Once melted, stir in 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract. Pour melted white chocolate into the prepared baking pan, and, with an offset spatula or spoon, spread into a thin smooth layer. Place the baking pan in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes or until almost completely set. If it sets completely, the bark layers could separate.
Middle Layer: Place semi-sweet chocolate in a small heatproof bowl or a liquid measuring cup. Add 1/2 teaspoon of oil. Repeat melting, just as you did with the white chocolate in step 2. Once melted, stir in remaining 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract. Pour all of the semi-sweet chocolate over the white chocolate layer and spread it into a smooth layer. Place the baking pan back in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes or until almost completely set.
Top layer: Place the remaining white chocolate in a small heatproof bowl or a liquid measuring cup. Add last 1/2 teaspoon of oil. Repeat melting, just as you did with the other layers. Pour over the bark layers and spread into a smooth layer. (This layer will not have peppermint extract.) Sprinkle evenly with crushed candy canes. To crush, place the unwrapped candy canes in a sealed zipped-top bag and roll or bang with a rolling pin or meat mallet until crushed.
Refrigerate the bark until completely set, about 1 hour. Once hardened, remove from the pan and peel off the foil or parchment. Break or cut into pieces as large or as small as you want.

Ting Ying Han is an interdisciplinary artist, whose work delves deeply into the realms of memory, identity, and belonging. Drawing inspiration from her own experiences as an immigrant straddling two cultures, her artistic practice is a captivating exploration of the intricate tapestry of cultural identity. Utilizing a diverse range of building materials and everyday objects, Han's thought-provoking sculptural installations spark discussions around pressing social and political questions, shedding light on the evolving perception of place and space amidst the complexities of migration, urbanization, and gentrification.

Other Frequencies is an invitation by artists Phillip Byrne, Beatriz Cortez, and Tatiana Guerrero to listen to the memories carried by plants and rocks, to listen to life in the cosmos as well as in the interior world of bodies, and in the subterranean world where other rivers flow, matter migrates, roots touch each other, find nurture, communicate. The visions and sounds in their work capture a world that is not meant for humans even if it exists inside our bodies and inside the Earth where the land safeguards our bones, the memories of our life on this planet, our gestures of generosity, our cultures and technologies, our spiritual connection to the planet and to the cosmos.

Alice Konitz's work throughout the past decade could be described as sculpture activating social space. In 2012, Konitz started a project called the Los Angeles Museum of Art (LAMOA), which served both as an art project and as an artist museum. Through this piece Konitz was able to provide a space for a community of artists based on the desire to showcase artworks produced within this group and to provide a platform that could develop into a variety of structures to serve their needs. LAMOA as well as many of Konitz’s other works developed out of an interest in sculptures which, while not necessarily functional, do something. Rather than using sculptures to illustrate her research, Konitz engages in thought processes through working with materials which leads her to discoveries she would not have been able to see otherwise. Currently Konitz’s work negotiates elemental, physical processes such as temperature and airflow, as well as materials gathered from her immediate surroundings.
