I find the "requirement" that “a true martyr doesn’t resist death” to be unrealistically narrow.— Webster’s 1828 Dictionary and the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English cast a medium-sized net, in that they require death (not just suffering), but do not require a willing or voluntary death. Kimball, June 9, 1844 (she doesn’t complete the letter until many days later).— From History of the Church (6:551), as Joseph returned to Nauvoo to turn himself in to the authorities: “About 4 P.M. Joseph, Hyrum, the Doctor and others started back. While walking towards the river, Joseph fell behind with Orrin P. Rockwell. The other shouted to come on. Joseph replied, ‘It is of no use to hurry, for we are going back to be slaughtered….’”— Joseph deliberated with others about whether to go into hiding or turn himself in. According to a report from Abraham C. Hodge, this is how it went down (recorded in History of the Church, 6:545. “‘Brethren, here is a letter from the Governor which I wish to have read.[’] After it was read through Joseph remarked, ‘There is no mercy—no mercy here.’ Hyrum said, ‘No; just as sure as we fall into their hands we are dead men.’ Joseph replied, ‘Yes; what shall we do, Brother Hyrum?’” They then decided to go into hiding (though only briefly).— “I told Stephen Markham that if I and Hyrum were ever taken again we should be massacred, or I was not a prophet of God. I want Hyrum to live to avenge my blood, but he is determined not to leave me.” (History of the Church 6:546). For what it’s worth, Edward Tullidge reported that the reason Joseph wanted Hyrum to live was “to lead the Church,” not “to avenge my blood” (see note in HoC 6:546).— While in hiding, Joseph and Hyrum were trying to decide whether they should flee or turn themselves in. History of the Church 6:549 records the following: “Joseph … said, ‘Brother Hyrum, you are the oldest, what shall we do?’ Hyrum said, ‘Let us go back and give ourselves up, and see the thing out.’ After studying a few moments, Joseph said, ‘If you go back I will go with you, but we shall be butchered.’ Hyrum said, ‘No, no; let us go back and put our trust in God, and we shall not be harmed. The Lord is in it. If we live or have to die, we will be reconciled to our fate.’”— “I know what I say; I understand my mission and business. God Almighty is my shield; and what can man do if God is my friend? However, 25 years after Carthage, the Atlantic Monthly (linked above) reported that Joseph had actually shot four times, and injured a fourth man, who the article does not name, because he was “preparing to prove an alibi.” Some researchers (see “Carthage Conspiracy,” by Oaks and Marvin, pg. 52) believe the 4th man might have been a Mr. Allen (possibly Nathan N. Allen, see fn 22 on pg. 61), who was also indicted but also didn’t show up. We don’t know much about Mr. Allen, but I’m unaware of any specific claims that he died as a result of his wounds. His indictment and apparent “preparations to prove an alibi” (whatever that may mean in 1869) suggest he was alive. The author of the Atlantic article was only 5 years old at the time of the murders, and he gets some details quite wrong (i.e. he wrote that Joseph had “two loaded six-barrelled revolvers” at his disposal).— Joseph and Hyrum overheard Dan Jones’ conversation with Worrell. Afterwards, Joseph asked Dan to tell the governor about the threat. Dan did so, but the governor didn’t take him seriously. When Dan returned to the jail, he was not allowed back in. Fun fact: Franklin Worrell was later killed by Porter Rockwell.— Dean Jessee reported that Fullmer’s pockets were searched before he was allowed to enter the jail, but the single-shot pistol was in his boot.See Pg. 7 here: tinyurl.com/b4fubay3— I cited a lot of resources in this video. The other 5 are pretty much more of the same content (I'm simplifying, but that should give you an idea of what to expect from them).— It wasn’t until 1884 that Spaulding's manuscript resurfaced in the papers of Eber D. Howe. It can be read online, and bears little resemblance to the Book of Mormon.— Sources disagree whether Hurlbut discovered the Spaulding connection during his mission or after his excommunication. Dale W. Adams (2005) indicates that it was during his mission, but I’m not sure what led him to that conclusion beyond the fact that his mission companion, Daniel Copley, also abandoned his mission. There may be additional evidence, but I didn’t search comprehensively for it. In any case, Hurlbut was the first to find and promote the connection.— Joseph Smith recalled that in an early conversation with Hurlbut (March 13, 1833), Hurlbut had stated, “if he ever became convinced that the book of Mormon was false, he would be the cause of my destruction, &c.” Source: Joseph Smith journal entry, 28 Jan. 1834.— Both Sidney Rigdon and Benjamin Winchester assert that prior to joining the Church, Hurlbut had been cut off from Methodism for “unvirtuous conduct with a young lady” or “immoralities.” Sources: Winchester, pg. 5 / Sidney Rigdon, Letter to the Editors, Quincy Whig, Quincy IL, June 9, 1839.— My personal favorite treasure-digging claim in the affidavits comes from Willard Chase, who reported that Joseph was initially prevented from obtaining the golden plates by a toad that turned into a man, who slapped him in the face.— Even E. D. Howe reported that the Spaulding manuscript given to him by Hurlbut “had no resemblance to the 'Book of Mormon.’” Howe also believed there was a second manuscript that better matched the Book of Mormon.
