Dead Rappers Get Better Promotion: The Health Crisis in Hip-Hop | A #BHeard Town Hall BRIC TV 2023-10-06 | After seemingly giving the very best of themselves to the world, some of Hip-Hop’s most notable MCs have died seemingly premature deaths. Despite the appearance of success and the global acclaim for which rap artists are celebrated, their lives are often a grueling 24 hours cycle of touring, appearances and recording designed to optimize the commodification of their bodies. This continuous cycle of production is often coupled with indulgences that are often in direct opposition to the positive health of an artist and an absence of health care. The truncated lifespan of many rap artists have experienced may be contextualized within institutional racism and be representative of negative health outcomes for Black men and women throughout American society. What obligation do the institutions that extract the creativity and labor of Black bodies have to replenish and ensure they are healthy and properly maintained? It’s hard to talk about Crown Heights without talking about how it’s changed in recent years— rising rents, shifting demographics, new businesses built on top of old wounds. But reducing a neighborhood to it's own displacement erases the people who've been there all along, who've built it up, and who often still call it home. We celebrated the end of summer by walking around Crown Heights and talking to people. We met two female entrepreneurs, with very different business models. We followed a group of skaters around in a circle, down a ramp and into their past. #BHeard Docs: Empty Promises BRIC TV 2023-05-24 | In 2022, New York City was shocked to discover that nearly 10% of its most affordable housing stock was sitting vacant. Given that the number of people in city shelters is ballooning and the empty apartments are more than enough to house them, it is a travesty and an embarrassment. But why is this apartment warehousing happening? The landlords and their advocates blame a 2019 state law that caps the amount landlords can increase rents in rent-stabilized apartments upon new tenancies—making it harder for them to recoup the cost of repairs. Tenant advocates blame greedy landlords who want to force out tenants paying low rents, and remove their apartments from rent-stabilization all together. Where does the truth lie? Almost Home: Housing Insecurity in NYC | #BHeard Docs TRAILER BRIC TV 2023-04-19 | Following up on the Emmy-winning documentary series, Sidewalk Civics, and our Spring, ‘22 series, The Damage Done: Gun Violence in Brooklyn, BRIC TV’s #BHeard Docs unit is producing a new five-part series on one of the most complex and hard to solve problems facing New York City: housing insecurity. Each of the five parts of Almost Home will explore this issue from a distinct angle, but the series’ overarching framework will take viewers from narrow to broad, from the impact on one person to the systemic inequalities driving the lack of affordable housing and in too many cases, homelessness. With an eye toward building the BRIC brand through developing media partnerships, we are collaborating with the highly respected non-profit online newsroom, The City, which covers a broad spectrum of housing-related issues. Our team and theirs are working to identify common ground, and we believe their journalistic credentials and contacts will make the documentaries that much richer and more compelling (two of their reporters have already done on-camera interviews). Along with reporting, research, and referrals, we hope The City will produce accompanying articles that will add depth and context to the issues explored in this series. And, working together, we hope we might have greater success in finding funding and building audience engagement for the series.
