Jim Knable
The spiritual "Say Brother, Will You Meet Us" became the hit Union Army marching song "John Brown's Body" which Julia Ward Howe rewrote as "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." It would later become "Solidarity Forever" with lyrics by Ralph Chaplin, written for the Industrial Workers of the World. This version of "John Brown's Body" is the most lyrically dense.

Special thanks to everyone at The Brooklyn Firefly in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn!
Back in 1854
The country was at the brink of war
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
Made sure slav’ry stayed intact
The Whig Party had dropped dead flat
Killed off by the Democrats
And so a new party was planned
They were called Republicans
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
They changed, they changed
And now they're doing something new
Fremont ran but Abe Lincoln
Was the first Republican
President to be elected
Not yet then but now respected
Got us through the Civil War
The GOP's the party for
Emancipating enslaved men
Reconstructing our nation
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
They changed, they changed
And now they're doing something new
Herbert Hoover the Republican
At the start of the Great Depression
Believed in rugged individualism
Gave his support to segregation
And so the cities turned on him
And stopped being so Republican
The Democrats led by Franklin
Roosevelt took the votes from him
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
They changed, they changed
And now they're doing something new
FDR made a new deal
Prohibition he repealed
The CCC and the WPA
The Fair Employment Practice today
So the Democrats became
The party in the people's name
Civil Rights was on its way
After World War II had played
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
They changed, they changed
And now they're doing something new
JFK and LBJ
One of them lived to fight another day
The Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act
Joined together white, brown, and black
Then Nixon and Reagan found religion
Changed the Republican vision
Then there's Reagan Democrats
A thousand points of light and a cowboy hat
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
They changed, they changed
And now they're doing something new
And now we’re talking today
People wandering around not knowing what to do or say
People say there might be a party split
We're just going to have to watch and see what becomes of it
So the capital was stormed
Maybe there's a new party’s informed
We don’t know but we shall see
What becomes of history
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
The Democrat Republican Switcheroo
They changed, they changed
And now they're doing something new
Keep the tracks before the train
Never turn your back on rain
Everything will stay the same
Until you change
Under stacks of fallen fame
Known by six or seven names
When the proud attack the tame
And shame the vain
People change
People change
People change
Take me to the wooden shed
With a pitchfork stone and bed
There’s a whole lot being said
That’s not done
When you’re dead and underground
Or on your head and makin’ sound
It’s just instead of going round
That you come
People change
People chang-un’
Fiddle play and guitar strum
Look what we have overcome
Oh I can’t believe what we have overcame
Lookin’ out across the town
Rooftops red and black and brown
There’s some people that I’ve found
That are strange
People change
People change
People change
(Vocal breakdown
and instrumental/dance break heart attack)
Under Chekhov’s Cherry Trees
Balzac’s birds and Bessie’s bees
There’s some people that are free
When they’re bound
Under swinging pendulums
By the drum before the drum
We are so often overcome
Before we’re found
People change
People change around
But the mission of the man
Is to plan before you stand
I think I understand
I understand
Building towers in the sky
Is just one way to get high
There are others if you try
To name them
People change
People change
When you change them
Crossing bridges in the rain
Gets you just as wet the same
As the river running tame
Beneath you
Keep the tracks before the train
Never turn your back on rain
People change, people change
We need you
(First two stanzas)
People change
People change
People change
I met a bunch of those guys
You know, from supposedly the other side
A bunch of kids and a couple older guys
Putting on a play
About the fighting everywhere
And how it made them run and made them scared
And how every day they thought they were prepared
But they kept going anyway
I hung around with some other folks
Sung some songs and told some jokes
The best of those were funny and at the same time sad
I might have claimed some blood and some land
But I slipped in the mud and I sank in the sand
I couldn’t really stand with them and it made me feel bad
I’m on the side of those who are trying to survive
Trying to live a good clean life, have a bunch of kids and maybe even thrive
Get out of the house drive to the store
Without getting killed in any kind of war
Yeah, I know what it’s for, but I’m on the side of those guys
I know some are gonna take it wrong
Not hear the words of this song
So I’ll reiterate it all night long
There’s more than two sides
I like the guys on both sides of the wall
Who don’t think it should be there at all
Who know that all this fighting is wrong
There’s nothing that it ever decides

I can’t get down to Nashville, I got some kids who are living here. If I could take them with me, I’d go there every year.
I can’t get out to LA to make a million dollars. I’m on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, trying to be a better father.
I’ve done some things that I’m proud of and a lot I wish I didn’t, I’m stuck in New York in a bowl of chowder doing someone else’s biddin’.
I’m listening to Neal Casal, Maggie Carson, and Todd Snider. I’d like to be like all of them if I were the decider.
But fate has a way of working out to make it better. I’m stuck in Brooklyn in a Tuesday spot, voice dictating like a telegram, stop, no, more like a lost love letter.
I can’t get down to Asheville, but I can make it up to Harlem, hang out with my ne’er-do-wells or whatever you might call ‘em.
Just a bunch of reckless dreamers self-releasing all their passions. You can’t keep us from believing that we someday we’ll be in fashion.
But fate has a way of working out to make it better. I’m stuck in Brooklyn in a Tuesday spot, voice dictating like a telegram, stop, no, more like a lost love letter.
I can’t get out to LA, tell Matt Shakman I’m successful. I’m lying, but that’s okay, that’s expected in this hustle.
I’m your broke and homeless singer friend looking for a silver lining, in the gold pot at the rainbow’s end that everyone I know Instagram seems to be finding.
Fate has a way of working out to make it better. I’m stuck in Brooklyn in a Tuesday spot, voice dictating like a telegram, stop, no, more like a lost love letter.

Would you have freedom from wage slavery,
Then join in the grand Industrial band;
Would you from mis’ry and hunger be free,
Then come! Do your share, lend a hand.
CHORUS
There is pow’r, there is pow’r In a band of workingmen,
When they stand hand in hand,
That’s a pow’r, that’s a pow’r
That must rule in every land- One Industrial Union Grand.
Would you have mansions of gold in the sky,
And live in a shack, way in the back?
Would you have wings up in heaven to fly,
And starve here with rags on your back?
If you’ve had “nuff” of “the blood of the lamb,”
Then join in the grand Industrial band;
If, for a change, you would have eggs and ham,
Then come, do your share, lend a hand.
If you like sluggers to beat off your head,
Then don’t organize, all unions despise,
If you want nothing before you are dead,
Shake hands with your boss and look wise.
Come, all ye workers, from every land,
Come, join in the grand Industrial band,
Then we our share of this earth shall demand.
Come on! Do your share, lend a hand.

I’ve been looking around
At the trees without any leaves
The leaves blow in the wind
They’re such helpless defenseless creatures
I used to be so friendly
I used to be so friendly
But then I changed
Then I changed
And now I’m not so friendly anymore
I went into the Marie Calendars
With my parents and wife, we were desperately poor
So we ordered some food, sat down until it came
Then all dashed outside to the station wagon door
My brother was already sitting in the car
So was my grandfather and all our bags
Everybody got in, I was the very last to fit,
We peeled out, won’t be going to Marie Calendars again
I used to be so friendly
I used to be so friendly
But then I changed
Then I changed
And now I’m not so friendly anymore
In another dream I was working in Nashville
Where you don’t play your own songs, but you write hooks for hire
I voiced my disappointment, but I said I understood
and was glad to have the work and not to be fired
Wait I know what that dream is about now
But I’m not gonna say it here
It’s nice when you have a dream that helps you figure something out
Even if the meaning of it isn’t so clear
I used to be so friendly
I used to be so friendly
I guess I changed,
I guess I changed
Now I’m not so friendly any more
Wait that’s just a dream
Where I was singing this song
In a brunch place in the middle of a Sacramento strip mall
My wife would never let us dine and dash like that
My parents aren’t that poor
None of us live in Sacramento any more

I can still hear the shot round the world
The Lexington minute men musket ball hurled
Paul Revere rode, it was one if by land
Or two if by sea, and they came by sea
Singing songs of bravery
Try to remember the last civil war
When everyone knew what they weren’t fighting for
It wasn’t the land, it wasn’t for goods
It was slavery
And they all sang songs of bravery
Be it in England or be it in France
See it in Germany, ask me to dance
Blitzkrieg or Avignon, Dresden, Nagasaki
Bombed for the sake of the vagaries
While we all sang songs of bravery
The legend of Zorro, of Robin the Hood
Who robs and who kills and who gives to the good
Sherwood, California, Hollywood
Campfire smoke strong and savory
As we all sing songs of bravery
Down in Jerusalem and Palestine
North and South Ireland all in a line
Bold Spanish Noblemen ravaging all of America
Colonization and causing a nation of knavery
And we all sing songs of its bravery
The Titanic, Towers, the last Spanish flu
We are what they were and they did what we do
They huddle together and suffer as one
In the shirt waist fire factory by the Waverley
Singing songs of Bravery
I’m going to Acapulco
Rent a casino
Have all my friends come with me
Dance in a conga
Line up all touching shoulders
When this is over
I’ll be a better person
When this is over
I’ll fly a plane to Paris
Take all my family
Go up the Eiffel Tower
Go in a bookstore
Lean up against the cases
Ride on the Metro
Ride the train back to London
When this is over
I’ll be a better person
Help all my neighbors
Give them a turkey dinner
Went up to the cemetery
With my kids, my parents, three generations
In the Honda Pilot
Saw the river below
Saluted lady liberty
Minerva, Leonard Bernstein, and me
On revolutionary hill
When this is over
I’ll drive across the country
Stop in the hotels
Stop at the filling station
Stay with more family
Pick up the odd hitchhiker
Take him to breakfast
Sit in the smoking section
Tell everybody
That I’m a better person
Now that it’s over
I’m going to change forever
Everybody’s walking in the cemetery
Couples and friends
A mother with her son
Driving their cars
Parking next to the crypts
And my sons looked in
Said what is this we’re seeing?
And I said when this over
When this is over
The machine is in the steeple. It is not all right. Giving power to the people. It is not all right. The bluebird fell the eagle. It is not all right. Everything is not all right.
When they say he will get better. It is not all right. When they say you can write letters. It is not all right. When your chains have turned to fetters. It is not all right. Everything is not all right.
It's only rock and roll. But it is not all right. Going for an evening stroll. And it is not all right. The police are on patrol. Yet it is not all right. Everything is not all right.
Through the chants and all the candles. It is not all right. Taking all that I can handle. It is not all right. All the Visigoths and Vandals. Say it is not all right. Everything is not all right.
Pledge allegiance to our nation. It is not all right. Take a paid vacation. It is not all right. Tell the doctors and the patients. It is not all right. Everything is not all right.
Tell Jesus and Mohammed, it is not all right. Tell Moses and the Brahmins, it is not all right. Hanging on to Haley's Comet. It is not all right. Everything is not all right.
For the women and the men. It is not all right. One more time again. It is not all right. This is not the end. It is not all right. Everything is not all right.

I’m caught in this website
Never open attachments

I need the password
But she always signs me in
She’ll look it up when she gets home
But I don’t know when
I don’t have the bandwidth
To process the data
That you gave to me or sent to me
Or posted last night
I’m all out of memory
My start up is completely full
I can’t run this program
See my error message, please
(musical interlude)
I backed it up on the Cloud
But now the whole server’s down
It’s really got me feeling like
I’m down and out and crashing
I can’t sleep, restore me
Restart me, now, for we
Find all of our problems
Fix themselves when we turn them off and on again
Encrypted, encoded
Up and downloaded
My laptop is burning
My desktop is old
Where is the internet?
Have they hacked the server yet?
I wrote this all down
