The idea is to have an externally placed and fed angled TLUD (top lit updraft) stove. The burn chamber pierces the wall of the building and the stove pipe transfers the heat. There are some possible disadvantages along with the advantages of this woodstove, and a lot to think about and work out. This Brand New Dwarf Apple Has Incredible Flavor, Best Juice Eva! SkillCult 2023-10-16 | A new seedling apple with amazing flavor. This small seedling apple has a dwarf growth habit and a strong fruit candy like flavor. It is definitely a winner for juice and hopefully will prove to be good for cider and processed products like jelly. In terms of further breeding it has the dwarf trait and flavor to offer. Future breeding will include this apple mixed with other very highly flavored apples like my seedling Hard Candy Cider, Cherry Cox, Cherry Crush, Irish Peach and Whitwick Pippin. There is potential to end up with apples that have a very dwarf or columnar habit with excpetionally high flavor for small yards and intensive production scenarios. It is not the best eating apple. The texture is not bad, just not really fun or great. We can improve that with further breeding. For now, this is a very legit juicing apple and we'll see what kind of cider it makes in the future. Introducing A New Summer Pie Apple 🍎 From Seed, Integrity SkillCult 2023-09-04 | This new summer pie apple is named Integrity. It is a cross between Williams Pride and Vixen. It ripened here in mid to late august and just into September. It is a pretty red color and takes a high polish. Scab resistance is unknown, but I'm optimistic. The flavor is mild, but pleasant, fruity, and tart. The white flesh has pink tinges sometimes, but it is not a major feature of the apple. When cooked in pie, the slices hold their shape very well, without being tough or rubbery. In its season, it seems to be the berst pie apple on the homestead, preceded by another Williams' Pride x Vixen apple, Twang, which overlaps in the mid August, and followed by gravenstein and other September apples. Integrity apple variety is released primarily as a cooking apple, though people who like tart apples might like to eat it out of hand. Chestnut Crab, Kerry Pippin, Trailman, Ginger Gold, Tangowine, Twang, Dorsett Golden, Williams' Pride x Vixen and more. Turns out my two new favorite early pie apples are both Williams' Pride x Vixen seedlings. There is a great deal of potential for improving early apples, especially the late summer apples. Apple Review, Super Early, Delicious Flavor and Worth Growing SkillCult 2023-08-02 | July Red is an early apple that stands a little ahead of the average super early apple. Like many very early apples, the texture is not great, it doesn't keep at all, it is somewhat low in sugar and has an overall thin presentation. What it does have though is a delicious flavor that is somewhat berry like. It is not always strong, but definitely delicious. I would not have any need for a whole tree of this apple in the orchard, but a branch is certainly worthwhile. Safety information available in this video link... youtu.be/WABo_CvBdMgSome thoughts and techniques on splitting firewood that are not the average recommendations. the more fire wood I split, the less I use stumps and the less I handle the wood with my hands. I also rarely set the splitting tool down. Using only one approach is limiting and not very fun. I recommend people add more options to the toolbox when it comes to splitting firewood and you may find that you end up approaching it very differently.Number one recommendation I would say is stop using a splitting block or stump for a while. It saves a ton of work to not have to pick up the wood and carry it to the block, or have to balance smaller pieces. If you don't use a stump, you also don't have to cut the ends very flat. Try hitting stuff just where it is laying in the pile or on the ground. it takes a while to get good at it, but it's worth the investment.Forget any dogmas you hear, the stuff that contains words like never, always and proper. Results of 13 Years Quietly Breeding Daffodils SkillCult 2023-04-22 | In 2010, I started cross pollinating daffodils and planting the seeds. I'm not one to stop and smell the roses, and don't spend a lot of time "enjoying" them lol, but I find the adventure and challenge and possibility intriguing. As with apples, daffodils contain a huge range of possibility within their collective gene pool, making a great range of possibility. Do I think more people should breed daffodils? meh, sure, if it grabs your fancy. What I really think is that ordinary people should breed plants more in general. Whatever plant or animal it is that catches your imagination and causes you to not just see, but feel the possibility they embody for further development and diversification, consider dabbling. It might turn into something much greater. Many if not most of the varieties of plants we have started with an inspirational spark of someone being gripped by the possibility and potential they could sense. But that is worth nothing if not acted on. I've gotten great results with this project and with apples, without employing or learning any sophisticated breeding practices. Simple Leaf Dam System For Collecting Mulch SkillCult 2023-01-31 | I use quite a few leaves from the forest in my garden, and especially partially decayed leaf duff. This is a simple idea that really works well to concentrate leaves using gravity and natural phenomena. I like sifted forest duff for dressing seed beds. It is fine enough for small seedlings to grow through if put on sparingly. The small flat pieces of leaf do a good job of protecting the soil from being hammered by rain drops, preventing the crusting effect. It also contains a lot of natural microbes that should be beneficial to our plants and gardens. My experiments toward better, faster, smarter methods have shown outstanding results. Using these simple methods we can usually get exactly the tree forms that we want much faster than the old clip and pray methods recommended and followed for hundreds of years, but challenged and tested by few.By avoiding cutting back new trees and using simple interventions like notching and disbudding, growth can be guided very specifically down to choosing which buds are to be the main scaffold branches and where lateral fruiting wood comes off of main scaffolds. 🍎 New Lucy Glo Apple, Is It Good? Review and Comparison 🍎 🍌 👎 SkillCult 2022-12-24 | Reviewing the Lucy Glo Apple, a new pink fleshed apple in supermarkets. Comparison to some of my red fleshed seedlings. I figured out what the weird taste in this apple is, over ripe banana. I've actually never tasted that in an apple before. One of my least favorite flavors in an apple is banana. I don't like bananas. I can tolerate some banana flavor in an apple, but not a lot and I just don't enjoy it. But overripe banana is much worse. This tastes like a banana that has gone beyond just soft brown ripe, into the funk zone. Understand that these are probably poor examples of this variety. It can probably be much better, even very good or excellent. A major problem with modern commerical apples is that they have to perform in a modern commercial setting. They have to develop well, store well and taste at least okay. The batch I picked these out from had poor red flesh development, looked bad and these two taste bad. I took a bite this morning and that overripe banana flavor lingered in my mouth until I drank some water. My own red fleshed apples may suffer similar issues when attempting to plug into the modern supermarket paradigm. Especially regarding red flesh and flavor development, which is generally highly variable. One of the challenges in brining RF apples into the modern food paradigm will likely be breeding for consistent flesh color and flavor on top of all the other criteria. Ideally, we would subvert and replace that model by making different food choices, where food comes from sources closer to us geographically, without all the transport and storrage. For instance, breeding winter ripening apples for regions like mine, where the apples can be picked and delivered fresh off the tree through the winter. It is small, rough and rustic looking on the outside, but hiding a super sweet flesh with pink highlights. Best name ever for this little apple! While dessert crabs can be excellent and a few are much loved by apple growers and collectors, they are very underrepresented, with only a handful of varieties. This category of apples has massive potential for breeding new excellent varieties, since we have some excellent parents to work with in Chestnut Crab, Wickson, Trailman, Centennial and Crimson Gold. Just from the seeds I grew out this year of this same cross, 108 seeds, and the other crosses I made with Wickson, including Wickson x Appleoosa and Wickson x Black strawberry, we can expect probably dozens of new excellent varieties. I say that with some conviction, because out of the 4 Wickson x Rubaiyat crosses I have fruited, 2 are already named, Tomboy and Cherub and one more is promising. And then there are the literally thousands of intentionally cross pollinated, and naturally pollinated seeds with dessert crab parentage that I and other people are growing out from seed I've collected. Dessert crab will someday be very diverse and very popular with home orchardists and fruit collectors, but I hope also they will find their way into stores.I sell seeds in the winter. This Bag of Fruit Will Make Apple History #shorts SkillCult 2022-11-21 | This single bag of Wickson Apples, Cross pollinated with a red fleshed apple named Rubaiyat, will probably populate the category of desert crabs with many new excellent varieties. This cross when made in the past, has been throwing excellent offspring. It is interesting that while dessert crabs like Chestnut, Wickson and Centenial are much loved by apple nerds and most other people that tastes them, there are actually very few of them. I feel quite sure that we will have many, perhapse dozens or even more, of new worthwhile apples in this category coming out over the next 10 years. I have noticed that certain crosses tend to produce a higher number of good seedlings than others, and this is appearing to be one of them. I have three seedling trees of this cross in a row in my trial rows, one of which is already named, Cherub, another excellent one that will probably be named and released after another fruiting season or two, and one more red fleshed small flat apple that is very promising. If they all end up being as good as I think they will, and you were to do the math on the common misconception that it takes thousands of apple seedlings to get a good apple, the odds would be insanely low that I would get three good apples in a row. It's a myth.I will grow a lot of these seeds out and sell the others this winter. I also have a large number of Wickson seeds this year crossed with two other Red Fleshed apples, that I also grew from seed, Appleoosa and Black Strawberry as well as many naturally pollinated wickson seeds. There are quite a few promising new apple seedlings this year. It is actually pretty shocking how high the percentage of good apples I've gotten is. Some crosses, like Wickson x Rubaiyat and Williams' Pride x Vixen, seem to be throwing especially high numbers of good apples. Others, like Grenadine x Wickson, seem to throw mostly poor quality fruits. That is some of the most valuable information I'm getting from this project. Does Axe Handle Grain Runout Matter? SkillCult 2022-10-23 | Does axe handle grain runout matter? Of course it does, but it is not a death sentence. the subject is more nuanced. We also have to ask how severe the runout is, how tough the wood is and who is using it, and how. The more severe the angle of the rounout is, especially if it runs out both sides of the handle, the weaker it will be for a given piece of wood. Some pieces of wood are tougher than others and will resist splitting apart along the runout. How the growth rings are oriented in the axe handle might also have an effect. Finally, how is the axe being used. Many breakages are due to heavy handed use. Good practical chopping is graceful and efficient, not forceful. in particular, it's a mistake to try to push and axe through the work. Rather, use the handle to throw, snap or whip the head of the axe into the work. Would you take a whip and try to push on the handle to drive the whip through a subs butt? No, you would use the handle and body mechanics to create speed and let the whip do it's work. Trailman, William's Pride, Centennial, carolina red june, july red and ~Twang~ the typical early summer apple is thin, low in sugar, not the best texture and does not keep long at all. We have a few early apples that do not fit that description now, so it should be pretty easy to breed more and more, better and better "first early" apples. This can be done both by crossing them with each other, but also with any other apples that have desirable traits. Also very important is technique. I think many axe handles are probably broken by a heavy handed technique. They splitting and chopping wood, it is important for your health, efficiency and gear to have a light handed technique that relies on skill, accuracy and speed over brute force or excessive attitude. the system that is an axe, a wood handle, with a heavy metal head, is inherently problematic. Biochar, Basket Willow, Starting leek seeds, training fruit trees.If you don't know what to do with a beet, try this grated beet salad. Juice 1/2 an orange, add apple cider vinegar, a little fine grated ginger, a little cardamom if you have it, olive oil, honey and black pepper. Add cut up pieces of orange. Add Salt and a sprinkling of coarse sugar on top, like Demarara just before serving. If you don't have coarse sugar use regular granulated, but better if they are big crunchy crystals. If you don't like sugar, use honey. Beets are almost fruit like.
