The Grapefruit Squasher! Greens and Machines 2023-12-22 | A few years ago, I started noticing a lot of opportunities for free grapefruit in my area. Many people have trees, but either don't like them, can't eat them fast enough, or can't eat them due to medication conflicts. I took it upon myself to be the appreciator of grapefruit, and in the process, created my character Squashy Grapefruit (because the flattened oval shaped ones look so funny). Over the years of eating excessive amounts of grapefruit, it began to cause the enamel of my teeth to deteriorate since it is such an acidic fruit. At worst, it became painful to chew food. After getting my teeth repaired by the dentist, I decided to be more cautious of how much grapefruit I eat. I read that most of the harmful effects could be avoided by juicing them and drinking the juice through a straw so it never contacts your teeth. I Finally Bought Mold Release Spray! - Permanent Mold Casting with New Molding Bench! Greens and Machines 2023-11-28 | Technology is slowly increasing at the foundry with two new additions to make life a whole lot easier. The mold release spray, Sprayon's LU 204 Dry Film Graphite Lubricant, really helped in preventing my castings from sticking to the molds. The bench makes opening and closing the molding press much easier, but pouring is a little more challenging until I can build a step stool or raised platform of some sort. Reverse Osmosis Hooked Up To Garden Hose Greens and Machines 2023-01-14 | I managed to trashpick an entire reverse osmosis system, but not having a sink of my own to install it under, decided to hook it up to the garden hose instead. I built a wooden stand to make more portable. The metal dispenser arm was left over from another project.I was always skeptical of getting my own RO system because I thought if I bought one, I'd be indebted to having to purchase proprietary filters from the manufacturer forever. Fortunately, that is not the case with this one, as it uses standard size filters and the components are all modular connecting with 1/4" tubing and quick connect collets. The replacement filters I bought were from appliedmembranes.com This one was a 5-stage filter replacement plus alkalizing cartridge. Easy PVC Didgeridoo w/ Heat Gun Method Greens and Machines 2022-12-23 | I was inspired to build a didgeridoo after seeing an article in a music store about how practicing can help reduce snoring and sleep apnea (I've been told I snore since I was an early teen). I remembered the method my friend used to make custom sized PVC pipe adapters with a heat gun and some wood forming dies, and applied the technique to my didgeridoo creation. The two I constructed sound vastly different due to the lengths and diameter being different. This would be cheaper, easier to machine, and result in a press that I wouldn't need a crane to lift. In this foundry session, I set a personal record for most metal cast in one day! While I managed to pour 3 platens, the second one turned out ugly due to the sand being too dry, falling apart, and me trying to reconstruct the mold by hand with a spoon. From the Foundry: Cast Aluminum Pelican Beverage Coaster | New Etsy Listing Greens and Machines 2022-08-24 | Purchase from the Greens and Machines Etsy Store:etsy.com/listing/1276090238/cast-aluminum-pelican-beverage-coaster-3Hot off the Greens and Machines foundry are these stylish beverage coasters.The pelican design came from a video I shot of a flock of pelicans flying over Lake Winnebago.From this, the still image was converted into a silhouette, and machined into a mold. Scrap aluminum was melted and poured into this mold to create the coaster. The coasters were then machined and polished to finish. The "Making Of" these coasters videos is in development and will be released soon!**As this is a cast aluminum item, there exists some level of casting imperfection in each coaster**These coasters are made from scrap aluminum, and measure a diameter of 3". Each coaster weighs approximately 2.5 oz. The bottom of each coaster is machined and polished.These fit drinking glasses or tumblers of 3" diameter with a slightly beveled bottom perfectly. Using a smaller glass could be a problem as the pelican shape is raised; the glass can be wobble.For other uses, these are pretty neat coins; you can be one of the few people who owns a pelican coin like this one. I Accidentally Melted Magnesium... Greens and Machines 2022-05-28 | When collecting scrap for the foundry, magnesium can easily be confused for aluminum as it is very similar in weight, color, and appearance. The major difference is it is flammable and will start burning with a bright white flame as evidenced in this video. It isn't a very common material, which is why I hadn't encountered any to this extent until now, but it was definitely a surprise! I learned my lesson that ladders can be made from magnesium, and to be very suspect of any scrap that feels more brittle than usual when cutting with aviation snips.Safety disclaimer: burning magnesium emits ultraviolet radiation, make sure to wear appropriate eye protection and know what you're working with.
