Tom mostly uses a 6” combo square [homedepot.sjv.io/q4rbdN] or 12” combo square [homedepot.sjv.io/eKdV7X]. He looks for brands that are sturdy and not flimsy. Forged steel and cast iron are the strongest materials used.
He also showed a magnetic lock combination square [homedepot.sjv.io/rQj6d5]. Which can allow for quicker adjustments than the classic twist knob on the head.

Choosing tropical fruit trees can be a challenge. With harmful diseases like HLB, the ideal conditions and soil, and even watering frequency, knowing which to choose for a backyard (and which to keep in planters is tough. When a homeowner struggled to restore his hurricane-battered garden, he called landscape contractor Jenn Nawada and a local citrus expert to help.

Fruit trees planted: Key lime [plantingtree.com/products/key-lime-tree], Meyer lemon [plantingtree.com/products/meyer-lemon-tree], Hua Moa Hawaiian banana [bit.ly/4evnkzN], Dwarf Namwah banana [bit.ly/3BwjY0W], Kari Starfruit [bit.ly/3XZLvzl].
Use a citrus soil [homedepot.sjv.io/MmajmY] and controlled release organic fertilizer [homedepot.sjv.io/DKD1KG] when planting fruit trees to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
When planting a tree in a container select a container twice the width and depth of the tree root system. Use bamboo pieces [homedepot.sjv.io/Py1kyM] as stakes to support a newly planted tree. This will protect the fruit tree from weather until the trunk grows stronger.
Wear gloves [homedepot.sjv.io/Gmrqm6] when handling trees that may have thorns or sharp edges.
To clean up overgrown bananas and prune trees use a pruning hand saw [homedepot.sjv.io/oqQb4e].

Bricks have been used in construction for thousands of years. The originals were handmade, also known as “molded brick.” These bricks were packed into a mold by hand. These bricks can be sent to specific engineers who extract and identify the material from the brick to find out how old it is and where in the world it was formed.

When general contractor Tom Silva brought a new tool to the shop, no one knew what it was. It’s black, flexible, square, and has a ball attached to the end. Safe to say, none of the other crew members knew what it was.
Landscape contractor Jenn Nawada said it’s her “fresh air purse.” She fills the bag outside by pumping the ball, and when she needs some fresh air during a day in the office, she releases the air valve and breathes in her stored fresh air.
Host Kevin O’Connor said he uses this tool on days when he can’t get to the gym. He just slides it under his shirt and pumps it up to give his pec muscles a bit more definition. He would definitely need two, though.
Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey thinks it’s a multi-tool. He sits on it at concerts and sports games, and if he can’t see past the person in front of him, he pumps the handle until he’s a few inches taller. The other purpose? A whoopee cushion.

When a homeowner decided to move his laundry room upstairs to make handling his children’s laundry easier, his plumber had to cut open the walls to make the pipe connections. While the drywall was repaired after the project, the homeowner has been dealing with cracking seams ever since. When he finally had enough patching and painting on his own, he called the team at Ask This Old House for their help, and paint expert Mauro Henrique gladly answered the call.

Roger’s time with This Old House spanned nearly 40 years, from his first involvement in 1982—the show’s second season—to his decision to step down in 2020 because of health issues. Roger was our much-loved colleague, treasured by the entire This Old House community for his soft-spoken but no-nonsense approach to every aspect of landscape contracting. He was always there with the answers we needed.
“I remember every lesson from Roger,” says TOH executive producer Chris Wolfe, whose own garden bears many examples of Roger’s advice. “More importantly, there are millions of people whose lives have been enriched by everything Roger taught them.”
Roger’s love of the outdoors was a constant throughout his life. Born in 1954, he grew up in Burlington, MA, and considered a career in forestry while also working during college with local landscape and tree firms. In 1977, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife management and conservation law from the University of Maine.

For steps and cut list go to This Old House [thisoldhouse.com/house-one/94524/building-corner-kitchen-cabinets].
We’re in the middle of a kitchen remodel, and one detail I can’t wait to add is a corner shelf at the end of our existing upper cabinets. By extending the countertop, we'll be able to include an overhang for seating and extend our upper cabinets up to the ceiling. So it’s the perfect time to add some visual interest to this area to create a more custom look.
The cabinet will consist of two boards that will make up the back walls. I’ll rip their front edges at 45 degrees to set against the face frame, which will have outside edges also ripped at 45 degrees to set against the existing cabinet and wall. Lastly, I’ll add some shelves and cap their front edge to finish the look before I add crown molding to all the new upper cabinets.

A tribute to Russell Morash and his contributions to television. He was a leader in the industry and was the creator of genres that span cooking, woodworking, gardening and home improvement. His brilliance was in the simple. He made renovating a home seem attainable to the everyday viewer and from that spawned an industry.

How Shrubs are Harvested
Jenn toured Rhode Island Nurseries in Middletown, RI [http://rhodeislandnurseriesinc.homestead.com/]. The nursery specializes in yews, hollys, and a handful of other evergreen shrubs. They primarily operate as a distribution hub to other nurseries throughout New England, rather than selling their plants individually to homeowners.
The Most Practical Air Sealing Techniques
When talking about shrink wrapping windows, Nathan refers to the Frost King [frostking.com/products] Premium Cylinder, Heavy Duty, EZ Roll Shrink Window Kit [thd.co/3uX6buP]
When talking about feeling a draft in your window and removing window casing, Nathan suggests using a low expanding foam like GREAT STUFF™ [greatstuff.dupont.com/product-gallery.html] Window & Door Insulating Foam Sealant [amzn.to/3oQGTL7].
All other tools used including caulking gun [amzn.to/36aKihf], fiberglass insulation [amzn.to/3gM1lbx], weatherstripping [amzn.to/351ECWs], and caulking cord [amzn.to/3sCn9vC] can be found at local home centers.
Build It | How to Build a Box Joint Jig
Tom uses an old milk crate that has a series of box joints to demonstrate the amount of glue surface that the joint creates. Each of these “fingers”, as Tom calls them, presents more gluing surface, and therefore more holding power. Building the joint can be done on either a router or a table saw. Tom decides to use a table saw [amzn.to/3Bs64sC] equipped with a dado blade [amzn.to/3rPsFvY]. He and Kevin build a box joint jig which is a simple table saw sled equipped with adjustable stops and a pin. The pin allows for even spacing between dados. Tom and Kevin use black walnut to make the tray, which they sand, assemble, and then finish with food-safe oil [amzn.to/3gOGWCF].

When a homeowner contacted the team at Ask This Old House for help with her rose garden, Jenn Nawada answered the call. But instead of choosing any variety off the shelf, Jenn headed to the International Rose Test Garden. There, she received help from Rachel Burlington, the Botanic Specialist. Rachel taught Jenn some interesting facts about roses, the test garden, and Portland’s love for roses.
Where to find it?
Jenn heads to Portland, Oregon to meet up with Rachel Burlington, a Botanic Specialist at the International Rose Test Garden [portland.gov/parks/washington-park-international-rose-test-garden] to give a tour of the gardens and discuss the process of rose testing to see how different cultivars thrive in a variety of conditions and for a long period of time.
Rachel suggests that homeowner Catherine should plant a rose variety called All Dressed Up.
To install the rose bush, Jenn and Catherine use digging shovels [homedepot.sjv.io/jrb4De] to dig the hole.

After a homeowner purchased their new home, they set out to remove the previous owner’s handicap grab bars. As a result, their fully-tiled bathroom was left with some holes that needed patching. When they called the team at Ask This Old House for help, carpenter Nathan Gilbert gladly headed out to help them patch up their problem.
Where to find it?
To remove the tile, Nathan first scores around the grout using a utility knife [homedepot.sjv.io/baM6mb]. Then, he uses a grout brush [homedepot.sjv.io/KjMrZy] to clean out any dust. He also uses a carbide tipped grout removal tool [homedepot.sjv.io/PyMe6N] to help create a clean open line in the grout. He then begins carefully chipping out the tile with a hammer [homedepot.sjv.io/ZQmzbR] and chisel [homedepot.sjv.io/JzM92r].
Once the gypsum board is vacuumed [homedepot.sjv.io/DKJenj] and wiped off, the tile is ready to be installed. To adhere the new tile, Nathan opts to use a tile repair mortar [homedepot.sjv.io/3evBEX], applying it to the back of the tile using a 1/8 the notched trowel [homedepot.sjv.io/LXMj2L]. Once the tile is laid in, Nathan checks that the depth of the tile matches the others with a level [homedepot.sjv.io/PynBPq]. To grout the tiles, Nathan uses an unsanded grout that comes in a caulking tube [homedepot.sjv.io/75vEOr] for easy application.

How to Install Vinyl Plank Flooring
Nathan installed Pergo [pergoflooring.com] Defense+ 7.5 in. W Classic Weathered Pine Antimicrobial Click Lock Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring [thd.co/3H5bfQY] in a homeowner's kitchen. Nathan used Marshalltown [marshalltown.com] 13-inch Flooring Shears [thd.co/3tVvLQt]. To account for expansion and contraction of the planks, Nathan used 1/4-inch flooring spacers [amzn.to/3u7jDf4] along the perimeter.
To remove the existing vinyl flooring, Nathan used a circular saw [amzn.to/3rT0H19] to cut the floor into 2'x2' squares, then removed the squares using a pry bar [amzn.to/3nSYzVZ] and hammer [amzn.to/3qZD2Nd], all of which is found at home centers.
William C. Gilbert Carpentry provided expert assistance with this segment.

A lot of research has gone into assessing and guaranteeing the quality of our food and water. However, air quality is just as important, if not more so. In fact, the average American eats 4 pounds of food each day, drinks 8 pounds of water, yet breathes 30 pounds of air. Indoor air quality deserves its own focus.

Like the seasons themselves, a yard’s needs change throughout the year. Transitioning from spring to summer requires a certain approach. Landscape contractors Jenn Nawada and Lee Gilliam explain what homeowners should do to help their yards transition smoothly.
Where to find it?
For lawns, Lee would recommend using a slow-release fertilizer [homedepot.sjv.io/NkMEWq] for established lawns to promote balanced growth and help prevent lawns from burning in the summer heat.
It’s also a good time to apply pre-emergent weed control [homedepot.sjv.io/jr9a0M] for weeds such as crabgrass.

There are plenty of ways to breathe new life into an old fireplace, such as installing a gas-burning insert. But that’s only the case if the firebox is safe. When a homeowner faced an issue of a crumbling and cracking firebox, he called mason Mark McCullough for the job.
Where to find it?
To prep the space, Mark lays out plastic sheeting [homedepot.sjv.io/XYo4PG] over large furniture and lays out a drop cloth [homedepot.sjv.io/R5dBrX] in front of the firebox. To remove the old concrete and firebrick, Mark begins prying it out with his hands. He then cleans out any branches, or broken masonry and uses a vacuum [homedepot.sjv.io/eKLjG6] to remove the soot.
For the new firebox, Mark will be using yellow fire brick [homedepot.sjv.io/rQmWxj] as it matches best to the original. He then lays the mortar [homedepot.sjv.io/zNoO30] using a masonry trowel [homedepot.sjv.io/LXMEqV]. Mark adjusts his technique as he lays bricks on the Franklin Curve, carefully setting them at a forward facing angle. He then smooths out the mortar joints using a brick jointer [homedepot.sjv.io/1rvzBD].

Host Kevin O'Connor and general contractor Tom Silva enlist the help of carpenter Zack Dettmore to better organize a tool storage cabinet.
Where to find it?
To create custom drawer foam inserts, start by laying out tools on the foam board [kaizensource.com/]. Once you’ve arranged the tools, neatly trace around them to create a form guide. Follow the tool outlines with a utility knife and scoop out the foam innards until the tool fits snug in the opening.
Use aluminum u-channels [homedepot.sjv.io/21v76A] and custom cut them to the perfect dimension to divide different drill bits.
To create a U-channel drawer storage
1. Use the miter saw [homedepot.sjv.io/75vKN5] with a metal cutting blade [homedepot.sjv.io/rQmWPD] installed, measure, mark and cut the u-channel to each desired dimension.
2. Smooth the cut edges of the u-channel with a metal file [homedepot.sjv.io/JzMZNv].
3. Apply the magnetic tape [homedepot.sjv.io/zNoOVG] to the back of the u-channel. The tape is peel-and-stick, so there’s nothing particularly difficult about this step to keep in mind.
4. Place the u-channels in the drawer in the desired orientations.
5. Place the drill bits [homedepot.sjv.io/eKQ2vg] in each compartment.

With everything smart thermostats can do (scheduling, voice control, remote access, and remote temperature sensing), it’s obvious they’re a major upgrade over standard models. But, with the upgrade comes the need for constant 24-volt power with a common wire. When a homeowner couldn’t figure out how to wire his new smart thermostat, he called home technology expert Ross Trethewey for help.
Where to find it?
To install a smart thermostat you’ll need electrical tape [homedepot.sjv.io/xkMVA3], hand-held drill [homedepot.sjv.io/R50Wna], pliers [homedepot.sjv.io/eK29k1], screwdriver [homedepot.sjv.io/m5MxR7] and extra twist-on connectors [homedepot.sjv.io/VmPoy6].
Use a multimeter [homedepot.sjv.io/nLMD1V] to check for wiring continuity.
Use foil tape [homedepot.sjv.io/3eQbPr] to reseal the face of the air handler—which was manufactured by Ecobee [ecobee.com/en-ca/smart-thermostats/smart-thermostat-premium/].

A backyard stone patio can be a homeowner’s dream. But when it’s surrounded by trees and shade, it can also be a dream for mold and mildew. When a homeowner faced the problem of mold and mildew taking over his patio, he called the Ask This Old House team for help. Mason Mark McCullough brought several solutions (of the cleaning variety!) to help restore that bluestone beauty.

Using a pump sprayer [homedepot.sjv.io/q4Mrzg], Mark applies a multipurpose outdoor cleaner [homedepot.sjv.io/rQMjaD] to the bluestone and allows it to sit for a few minutes. Once the solution is set, Mark sprays down the bluestone using a power washer [homedepot.sjv.io/4P96P3] with a surface cleaning attachment [homedepot.sjv.io/Kjbk0e].

Understanding Wood Joints
Tom explained how to identify different types of wood joinery and why they’re used in woodworking.
Half-lap joint—Formed by creating two rabbet cuts, which requires cutting half of the end of the board. DOMINO DF Q-Plus by Festool [festoolusa.com]
Half-lap butt joint—Formed by creating one rabbet cut, as explained above, and then placing the other board into the opening created by the rabbet cut. Hoffman—PDS 32 [hoffmann-usa.com]
Miter Joint—Formed by creating two, opposing, 45-degree angle cuts on the ends of the board and then bringing them together, creating a 90-degree angle. Cut created using a Zeta P2 made by Lamello [lamello.com]
Floating tenon joint (aka biscuit joint)—Formed using a biscuit joiner, a specialty tool that drills mortises wide enough to accept biscuits or tenons that are pre-cut and connect two boards with mortises together. Cut created using biscuit joiner, Top 10 by Lamello [lamello.com]
Box joint—Formed by creating a series of cuts on each end of the board that create a castle or finger-shaped look. Cut created using Kreg Jig® K5 [kregtool.com/home]
How to Fix a Sinking Driveway Drainage System
Mark raised a drywell in a driveway that sunk below grade. After using a chipping hammer [amzn.to/3teorik] and chisel [amzn.to/3HNQ1Hm] to break away the sunken asphalt, Mark removed the grate and added gravel. He chose to use EZ Street ready-to-use asphalt [ezstreetasphalt.com] and ProMasonry Type S Mortar mix [http://www.promasonry.net] to level out the drywell.
