Since Home Offices are usually created by converting a bedroom into an office, you can actually reduce your homes value if you convert a two or three bedroom home into a dedicated office - especially if you install built ins, etc. and make it hard to convert back to a bedroom in the future. If you plan out your kitchen thoroughly before you every pull out a hammer, your project will likely go 10x smoother. Step 2: Demolition and Rough-inAfter planning out your kitchen, it's time to demolish the existing kitchen to give yourself a clean slate to work from. Before you can start putting the kitchen back together, you will need to complete the "rough-in" installation for all of your appliances, plumbing fixtures, etc. Depending on the complexity of your kitchen, you MAY want to consider hiring a plumber or electrician for these rough-ins. Step 3: Flooring InstallationPrepare the Subfloor, Install the Uncoupling Membrane, Install the Tiles, and finally, Grout and Seal the TilesStep 4: Cabinet Installation1. Setting the Ledger BoardWhen installing your wall cabinets, it is extremely important that you have a level ledger board to set the cabinets upon. This ledger board is typically a 2"x4" piece of lumber and it is temporarily attached the wall so that it is perfectly level. 2. Finding the "High Point" of the Kitchen FloorTo find the hight point, establish a level line on the wall of the kitchen. Next, measure from the floor to the level line in a few locations in your kitchen. The smallest dimension measured indicates that the floor is the highest in that location. This will be the "high point" in the kitchen and will establish the mounting height for the base cabinets. 3. Using a Cabinet Hardware JigThe last thing you want to do is spend thousands of dollars on cabinets and then botch up the cabinet hardware installation. I highly recommend the use of a $10 cabinet hardware jig to take all of the stress out of measuring. Step 5: Counter InstallationIn my opinion, this step is best left to the professionals. This Costs $5.98 and Can Make ANY Room Look High-End! In today’s “Fundamental Friday” I am going to show you the power of wall molding / trim and how it can make any basic wall look custom. And the best part is that this is a super affordable and DIY-friendly project that you can tackle with limited tools and experience! For my design, I used a 48” tall by 24” wide box (approximately) for the larger box and a 18” tall by 24” wide smaller box for the bottom. Cut all of the pieces to length using a miter saw (or miter box) and position them in place on a flat surface. Next, use the miter spring clamps to hold the miters together in the perfect position and then apply a bit of CA glue to the mitered joint. Spray some CA glue activator on the miter and it will instantly dry – holding the mitered joint together. Do this for all of the mitered edges and then remove the miter spring clamps. Once the wall molding boxes have been cut and glued together, it is time to hang them on the wall. I like to use a laser level to establish the mounting height on the wall, but you can also just use a standard level. To attach the wall molding boxes to the wall, I like to use a brad nailer with ¾” nails. However, the size of the brad nails will depend on the thickness of the trim you are installing. You can also use a bit of glue on the back of the trim boxes if you want an extra strong hold (However, this will likely tear off the drywall a bit if you ever remove the trim). After getting the first trim box installed, I like to use a piece of blocking as a “spacer” to position the remaining trim boxes. This will help to ensure that everything is level and uniform. Once all of the trim boxes have been installed, use a bit of caulk around the edges of the trim to ensure that there are no visible gaps or openings. Once the calk dries, paint the trim to match the wall. Congratulations! You now have a beautiful custom wall that looks 10x better than a standard boring wall. (Everything You Need to Know) Andrew Thron Improvements 2025-07-06 | Although I hate to say it... you really shouldn't DIY your own kitchen countertops — at least not if you're hoping to increase your home's value.In this video, I'll explain why most DIY-friendly countertop materials (like laminate, wood, or concrete) just don’t cut it when it comes to resale. If you want to actually boost your home’s value, you're probably going to need to invest in one of the following countertop materials: - Marble- Granite- Quartz- Porcelain Composite (like Dekton, which I personally installed in my kitchen)First, I'll go through each countertop material and list the Pros and Cons of Each. Next, I'll explain why I chose Dekton Awake for my kitchen (cosentino.com/usa/colors/dekton/awake) over other options. I am also going to show you every step of the counter installation process. Here is a summary below: 1. Planning Before you can have kitchen counters installed, you need to complete the cabinet installation. Cabinets need to be installed for two reasons. One, it will help you establish the Square Footage of counter needed (for cost planning). Two, the counter installer will need the cabinets in place before they can take measurements. 2. OrderingTo get your counters ordered you are typically going to go into a big box store and make a selection based on what is available. Next, you will set down with a countertop designer and they will prepare a layout drawing and give you a ballpark price. Once you pay the deposit, they will schedule the measurment appaointment. 3. MeasuringSomeone form the Counter fabrication company will go to your home and take measurements using a laser. They will then generate a counter layout drawing for approval. Once you approve the drawing, they will begin fabrication. 4. FabricationAt this stage, the counter fabrication company will cut your slabs based on the measurements taken. Typically, this cutting is done with a large wet saw or a water Jet. 4. InstallationWith the counters fabricated, the installation company will arrive at your kitchen and install the counters in place. This usually takes anywhere from 1-4 hours depending on the complexity of your kitchen. 5. EnjoyCongratulations! But this is not just any tile floor. I am going to be installing the Schluter Ditra Heat flooring system which is going to add a touch of comfort and luxury to this job. Now heated floors like this are typically used in bathrooms. However, my home has a heat pump (not super efficient) and the temperatures drop into the teens in the winter. So I mainly installed this heated flooring system to help heat the main area of my home in the winter. Hopefully, that makes sense. To Install a Ditra Heat Tile Flooring System, you will want to follow these general steps: Step 1: Prepare the SubfloorIn my kitchen, I had a plywood subfloor that had some thinset mortar stuck to it from the previous kitchen tile removal. Be sure to remove all, mortar, dirt, dust, etc. from your subfloor. Apply a primer (if applicable) for your subfloor for optimal adhesion. Step 2: Install the Uncoupling MembraneSchluter makes a bunch of different uncoupling membrane types, but I went with the Peel and Stick Sheets (since that seemed to be the easiest to install). Simply peel off the plastic and then press the adhesive backing into the subfloor. Step 3: Ditra Heat Electrical and Cable Installation. I had the electrical work for my heated flooring system installed by a licensed electrician. Essentially, you will want a dedicated circuit run from your electrical panel to your thermostat location. Additionally, you will want to run a conduit from the thermostat box to the base of the floor so that you can run the heating cables and temperture sensor wires up to the thermostat from the floor. To install the heating cable, simply press it within the "knobs" in the membrane being sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for grid spacing, etc. Lastly, install the temperature sensors within the grid. Step 4: Install the TilesWith the heating cables installed, mix up your thinset mortar and apply it to the membrane with a trowel. I used 12"x24" tile for my kitchen, so I used a 1/2" square notch trowel. Apply the trowel lines perpendicular to the tiles longest side and then press the tile into the mortar. Don't forget to "back-butter" the back of the tile. Install spacers, leveling clips, etc. as needed. Cut the tiles using an angle grinder or a tile saw / snap cutter.Step 5: Grout and Seal the TilesAfter the tiles have been installed apply grout to the gaps and seal the grout to prevent staining in the future. Step 6: Test the System and EnjoyFinally, adjust the floor temperature on the thermostat and test everything out. Over the course of a few years, I poured a ton of sweat equity into this home and, thankfully, my brother was around to help me with many of the projects. (But I also probably spent at least 75k on tools materials over the course of 3 years...)Below is a quick recap on all of the projects: Backyard: In the backyard, we started by demolishing pretty much everything (The deck, the fence, the shed, etc.). Next, we did some structural work for the deck (e.g. extending the concrete slab landing) and built the shed using pressure treated lumber and Trex decking. I decided to install a wire railing on the deck which I think turned out great. We also built a new fence, a privacy screen, and added an outdoor projector screen adjacent to the deck for some outdoor movies. The Foolproof Shed Foundation! This shed foundation design involves gravel and pressure treated lumber - so you don’t need to worry about concrete. The best part? You can use this type of shed foundation on both flat and sloped terrain. Here is how to Build it:1. Plan and Layout Your Shed FoundationStep one in building a shed foundation is to plan out the location and size of your shed. The general rule of thumb is that you want your shed foundation to be a foot or two larger than your shed. For example, if you are building a 10’x10’ shed, aim for a 12’x12’ shed foundation.I recommend the use of batter boards and string lines to layout the shed foundation, but there are a bunch of different ways to do this. At the end of the day, you just want to ensure that your shed layout is perfectly square.2. Clear the Area and Apply StoneAfter laying out the shed foundation footprint, I recommend that you remove any grass, vegetation, etc. for a 12” “strip” around the perimeter of the shed. Next, you will want to level the soil and compact it using a hand tamp. Once the soil is level and compacted, apply around 2” of stone on top of the soil. The stone will allow for better drainage under the shed foundation and will also make it easier to level. Compact the stone and ensure that it is level.3. Build the Shed Foundation FrameOnce the site is prepped, use 4”x6” pressure treated lumber to frame the shed foundation. Since my shed foundation is 12’x12’, I cut my 4”x6” pressure treated lumber to a length of 12’ and positioned it in place at the back of the shed. After confirming that it was level, I pre-drilled 5/8” (amzn.to/4kCws9n) holes through the lumber every 3’ and then I drove a piece of ½” rebar through the board and into the ground. This rebar should go around 2’-3’ into the ground and it will help to hold the lumber in place.Once the back piece of lumber is installed, begin installing the lumber on the sides of the shed. Note that you will need to “step-up” the lumber to account for the slope of the terrain. Be sure to secure the sides and front of the shed foundation frame lumber together using rebar and 10” structural screws. Continue to install the lumber as required to get the shed frame perfectly level on each side.4. Backfill the Shed Foundation Area with DirtOnce the shed foundation frame is constructed, backfill the “void space” within the shed frame with dirt. Fill the frame with dirt until you have 2”-4” between the top of the dirt and the top of the shed foundation frame. That space will be filled with stone in a later step. I recently got a Liberty 7K Dump Trailer and it has been a game changer for projects like this: libertytrailers.com/ld7k-dump-trailers5. Install Landscape FabricAfter backfilling the shed foundation area with dirt, apply landscape fabric (amzn.to/4kCwNZH) over the shed foundation. This landscape fabric will help to prevent weeds from growing up through your shed foundation and will also prevent the stone (applied next) from sinking down into the dirt.6. Install the final layer of StoneOnce the landscape Fabric is installed, fill the final 2”-4” of the shed foundation frame with #57 stone (or similar). This final layer of stone will help with compaction and also allow for proper drainage beneath the shed. Once the stone has been applied, leveled, and compacted, the Shed Foundation is complete.You can now Build your Shed!Since this shed foundation project was a lot of manual labor, I decided to install a premade resin shed. However, on my last house, I build a pretty sweet (in my opinion) Modern Shed. After seeing various examples of Roman Clay, I was Intrigued.... and I decided to apply it to this accent wall in my home. This video is going to show you how to apply Roman Clay to any wall, step-by-step. But there are a few things that should be noted now:1. Because Roman Clay is applied with a putty knife or a trowel, this technique can seem a bit intimidating to some. However, I promise you that the application is easier than you think and you don't need to pay a painting contractor an arm and a leg to apply it for you. 2. Roman clay is a bit more expensive and time consuming than simply painting your wall. If you are on a budget (from a TIME or MONEY perspecitive), than Roman Clay might not be for you. 3. Super Simple DIY Fire Wood Storage Shed (FREE Plans!) If you have every tried to start a fire with wet logs, you know how annoying it is. Fortunately, this Fire Wood Rack is going to help keep my lumber dry from now on. Building this Fire Wood Rack is Super Simple! As noted in the video, I put together a detailed materials list, cut list, and cost breakdown at the link above so check that out if you want specifics. Below are the generic assembly instructions: Step 1: Purcahse the Lumber and Materials based on the Materials list in the FREE Plans. Step 2: Cut all of the Lumber to size based on the cut list provided in the plans. Step 3: Construct the Fire Wood Rack Base using 2"x6" and 1"x6" Lumber. Step 4: Attach the veritical support braces to the base. Step 5: Assemble the roof frame and Attach it to the vertical support braces. Step 6: Cut the corrugated metal roof to size using an angle grinder and attach the metal to the roof frame using gasketed screws. Step 7: Stain or Paint the Fire Wood Rack as desired and enjoy dry wood from here on out!In my opionion, you can builid this Fire Wood Rack in an afternoon by yourself and probably in one hour if you have a helping hand. Is that a little dramatic? 100%. But I really do think it looks tacky. So in this video, I am going to show you to build a simple DIY Privacy Screen that looks so much better than lattice (at least in my opinion). Next, measure the height of the screen and cut a few vertical support braces (2"x4") that you will mount the horizontal privacy slats to. Next, simply attach the horizontal privacy slats to the vertical support braces. It really is that simple. Here is how to Build a floating Deck (tools and materials linked at the end): : 1. Site PreparationFirst, mark the layout for you deck usign some stakes and a string line. After marking the layout, I recommend that you excavate down 1 or 2 inches and apply a gravel based to facilitate compaction. However, you can also build your ground level deck on compacted soil, an existing patio or slab, etc. I rented both mini skidsteer and a plate compactor for this proeject to save myself some manual labor. After excavating, compact the soil with the plate compactor, place 2" of #57 stone, and then compact the stone. 2. Placing the Adjustable Deck PedestalsAfter compacting the stone and giving yourself a firm foundaiton to build off of, assemble the Bison Level Up Adjustable Deck Pedestals by following the manufacturer's recommendations. Place them 16" O.C. on both ends of the deck and make sure that they are perfectly level by adjusting the slope leveler. After confirming that each pedestal is level usign a torpedo level, use a 6' level to adjust all of the pedestals to the same height. To do this, you simply need to rotate the adjustable pedestal support. Once all of the deck pedestals are in place, you can begin the joist installation. 3. Installing the Deck JoistsUsing pressure treated lumber (typically 2"x6", 2"x8", 2"x10", or 2"x12"), cut you joists to length and "Crown" each of the boards to make sure the crown is up. Next, place the joists on the deck pedestals, making sure they are centered on the pedestal on both sides. Then, simply attach the joists to the pedestals using the folding straps and screws. For the outer-most joists, you will need to use framing angle hardware since the joists on the end will not be directly supported by a deck pedestal. 4. Installing the Rim Joists and Skirting Board (if needed)Once all the joists are in place, attach the Rim Joist to end of the Joists by using a bar clamp to hold it in place. Use three screws to secure the rim joist to each deck joist. If the back side of your Rim joist is obstructed (like mine was by my house), you will need to attach it using framing angles. Lastly, if you have a gap below your joists / rim joist, it is recommended that you include a bit of "skirting" reinforcement as shown in the video. 5. Installing the Decking BoardsWith the deck fully framed, you can install the decking boards. For my deck, I used composite decking with hidden fasteners that go in between each board - but you can use any type of decking you want!6. Fascia Board and Final TouchesFor my deck Fascia, I used a peice of composite decking around the top of the perimeter. I mitered the corners and butt joints for a cleaner look. For the bottom, I used PVC fascia trim that painted black. Overall, I think the deck turned out great and it was super nice to not have to dig out concrete footers. This Outdoor Shower Build is INSANE! So this past summer, I finally built her one!Unfortunately, however, the best locaiton for the outdoor shwer was right next to the home's foundation - which introduced a few complications in terms of drainage, etc. To build this DIY Outdoor shower, I followed these general steps: 1. Excavation: I had to excavate the area around 10"-12" to give myself a level and firm base to build on. We rented a mini-excavator for this which made the process way easier. This was my first time operating a mini-excavator and it wasn't to difficult. 2. Drainage:After excavating, I dug a trench for the the shower drain pipe. I put 18" of stone in the trench and then positioned a piece of 2" PVC pipe within the trench to serve as the drain. After sloping the pipe, I backilled the entire trench with stone. 3. Building the Conrete Shower Pan: For my outdoor shower design, I first built a 4'x6' perimeter concrete "curb" to serve as the shower pan surround. I made the curb 8" wide, built the forms using 2"x6" lumber, and mixed the Rapid Set 24/6 Concrete Mix with the Mud Mixer. Next, I put the shower drain in place and poured a concrete sloped shower pan. You ABSOLUTELY need a rapid setting concrete like 24/6 mix if you want to try and slope a shower pan. NOTE: Rapid Set 24/6 Concrete Mix is suitable for Foot Traffic in 8-10 hours and reaches structural strength in 24 hours. 4. Tiling the Shower Pan: After letting the 24/6 concrete mix cure overnight, I tiled the shower pan. I used Rapid Set's All Tile Mortar for the thinset and I installed large format tile that my mom picked out. All Tile Mortar can be used as the thinset for all tile types and sizes. After letting the thinset cure for 5+ hours, I grouted the shower pan tiles. NOTE: You don't NEED to tile the shower pan. You could also just seal the concrete shower pan and use that as the actual pan. 5. Supply Plumbing: For the shower supply plumbing, I tapped the CPVC hot and cold water lines in the crawl space. I cut the pipes using a snap cutter, installed a branch tee, and then glued everything together using CPVC primer and glue. 6. Shower Panel Walls: For the Walls of the Shower, I used the HOFT Privacy Panel System and thier composite board slats. This system was super easy to install. I mounted the vertical posts to the concrete using expansions anchors and then placed the composite slat boards in between the two posts. 7. Installing the Shower head / panel: I used a Vigo Shower Panel for this project and I attached it to the HOFT walls using some bolts. This shower panel is awesome since it has the shower head (obviously), but also a body spray and spray wand function. 8. Final Touches: To complete the outdoor shower build, I caulked around the perimeter of the shower pan, built the shower door (using HOFT posts and composite boards), and installed the gate hardware. Overall, I am really happy with how this outdoor shower turned out. I made one HORRIBLE error when it came to tiling, so let me know in the comments if you "caught" the mistake. My mom has told me over 100x how happy she is with the outdoor shower and I am glad that I was able to make it happen for her. I decided to install this Wainscoting in the room adjacenet to my kitchen with the hope of adding a bit of a "accent" to the room. After considering a few differnt accent wall styles, I decided that a Wainscoting (wood paneling that lines the bottom portion of the room) would work best. For this project, I started by purchasing 1"x3" and 1"x2" MDF from Lowes. I also needed a few other materials like construction adhesive, paint, etc. To actually install the wainscoting, I stared by installing the top rail. To do this, I cut the MDF to size and attached it to the wall using construction adhesive and brad nails. Next, I determined the spacing for my veritcal boards and then cut them to the right height. Once cut, I applied construciton adhesive to the backs of the boards and then attached them to the wall with brad nails. **Be sure to use a level to ensure that all boards are level and plumb**After installing all of the 1"x3" boards, I installed a 1"x2" MDF "top cap" to give the Wainscoting a more finished look. Next, I caulked all of the seams and gaps. Once the caulk dried I painted the entire wainscoting with ultra pure white paint. As the final step, I hung an accent mirror in the center of the wainscoting wall and placed a faux plant in the corner. From Crack House to Curb Appeal! (Incredible DIY Transformation) Andrew Thron Improvements 2024-07-28 | More Info on All of these Projects ⬇️ atimprovements.com/10-curb-appeal-ideas-to-completely-transform-your-home-diy-friendlyA few years ago, I bought the ugliest home in my neighborhood. The Curb Appeal, in particular, was horrible - so I decided to do something about it. In this video, I am going to show you how I transformed the curb appeal of this fixer-upper with various DIY projects. Please note that I have detailed videos for all of the projects included in this DIY Curb Appeal Transformation video and I will link them down below. This curb appeal transformation started off with a handful of cosmetic upgrades. First, I power washed the entire home and I replaced all of the broken pieces of siding. Next, I removed the old abandoned metal chimney and painted the entire house using a paint sprayer. Once the house was painted, I replaced the shutters and switched out the old front door with a new one. These cosmetic projects definitely improved the look of the home, but there was still a ton of work needed. Next, I decided to completely revamp the front entryway. I started by removing the old metal railing and then I resurfaced the concrete steps using a concrete resurfacing product. After that, I demolished the old entry sidewalk and I poured a new concrete landing and curved sidewalk that connected the driveway to the steps leading up to the house. I then replaced the old railing with a new wire railing system. Once the front entryway projects were completed, I turned my attention to the garden and landscaping. I decided to build a concrete landscaping edging to help separate my lawn from my garden. I build the forms using 2"x6" lumber and poured all of the concrete by hand. Next, I installed weed barrier fabric, planted a few evergreen shrubs, and filled the new garden area with black mulch. Once the concrete garden curb was complete, I applied topsoil to the lawn and planted new grass seed. Unfortunately, however, the grass did not grow in nearly as well as I would have liked. And for the final project in my Curb Appeal Transformation, I decided to build a gable porch overhang over the front door. Although this architectural improvement was pretty involved for a DIY project, I think it had (by far) the most dramatic effect on the overall transformation of my home. DIY Drywall Repair - “California Patch” with Texture Match Andrew Thron Improvements 2024-07-03 | If you have a medium sized hole in drywall, a California Patch is a great repair method. This drywall repair method used the paper face of the drywall as the "seam tape" - which is pretty cool. After making the repair, I used @DAPProducts 2 in 1 Orange Peel Drywall Spray texture to match the surrounding orange peel wall texture. This product has an adjustable spray angle and allows for the density of the spray to be adjusted as well. Adding a gate to an existing fence can enhance the functionality and accessibility of your yard - which is exactly why I chose to build an additional gate. Ensure it’s easily accessible and fits the intended purpose. Additionally, I chose an area of my yard that had solid 4”x4” posts on either side. Step 2 - Measure the Opening and Cut:Measure the width of the opening where the gate will be installed. Standard garden gates are usually 3 to 4 feet wide, but you can customize based on your needs. If your existing fence is continuous, mark the section where the gate will be. Using a reciprocating saw, cut the fence to create the opening. Make sure to cut straight and smooth edges.Step 3 - Build the Gate:Take the cut section of fence from the previous step and add blocking to the sides. You will also want to add a diagonal brace for additional gate strength. Attach the blocking to the gate frame using 3” exterior rated screws (I personally like Power Pro Screws). You will want to “toe-nail” the screws into the existing fence rails. Step 4 - Attach the Gate to the Fence Post with Hinges:After attaching the support blocking to the new gate, place the gate in the opening. Ensure there is enough clearance at the bottom to prevent dragging on the ground and at the top for smooth operation. I recommend a 1/2" gap on the sides of the gate (between the new gate and the existing vertical posts) so that the gate can open and close without rubbing. Next, secure the hinges to the post and the gate frame. Typically, two hinges are sufficient, but I installed three hinges since my hinges were rather small. . Step 5 - Install the Latch:Although you can install any old gate latch, I decided to install the Yard Lock Gate Lock which could be the most secure gate lock ever made. To install the Yard Lock Gate Lock, you first should attach the latch to the inside of the gate post. Next, drill a hole through the fence post and feed the latch cable through the drilled hole. Next, run the cable through the lock box and then attach the lock box to the outside of the gate / fence post. Next, set your lock box combination and test the gate lock for successful operation.Step 6 - Test and Adjust:Finally, test the gate. Open and close the gate several times to ensure it swings freely and latches securely. Check for any obstructions or uneven ground that might affect its operation. Make adjustments to the hinges, latch, etc. (as needed) to ensure that the gate opens and closes smoothly. Adding a gate to my existing fence only took one afternoon and it only required a few basic tools and materials. Although it did get me in a little bit of trouble with my City..When I bought this fixer upper home a few years ago, the curb appeal was TERRIBLE. So I did the obvious improvements like power washing the exterior, painting the house, replacing the windows and front door, etc. I even poured a new concrete stair landing and entry sidewalk! However, the house still was very unimpressive from a curb appeal standpoint. As a result, I decided to tackle the ultimate curb appeal project: The Gable Porch Roof Overhang addition!Adding a gable porch roof to your existing house is a MAJOR home improvement project. I spent days just planning the whole project and modeling the porch roof in Sketchup. But after getting it designed, I ordered all of the materials and it was GO TIME. First, I built a new stair landing using Rapid Set's 24/6 Concrete mix which is going to serve as the foundation for my gable porch roof support columns. After that, I removed portions of my home's existing gutters, asphalt shingles, and roof decking so that I could access the front wall of my home. Next, I attached the post anchors to the concrete foundation and cut my 6"x6" vertical support columns to size. After attaching them to the post anchors, I installed the gable porch joists (which were 2"x6" boards) and anchored them to my existing home using hurricane ties. Next, we mounted our ridge board for the gable and cut our 2"x6" common rafters to size. I have super detailed information on all of the gable porch roof framing within my EBOOK linked above! After attaching the common rafters using a framing nailer, I installed the valley plate (also know as a "sleeper") on my existing house. The Valley plate will serve as a solid base for the jack rafters that we will cut and install next. To cut the jack rafters, you will first need to match the pitch of your gable where the jack rafter meets the ridge. For the bottom of the jack rafter, however, you will need to cut it at mitered angle on your circular saw so that it rests flush with the valley plate. In other words, you need to adjust the miter angle on your miter saw so that it matches the pitch of your homes roof. Again, refer to the EBOOK for more info on cutting the jack rafters. Once all of the jack rafters were attached to the valley plate and ridge board using a framing nailer, I decked the gable porch roof with 4'x8' sheets of plywood. Once the gable porch was framed and decked, I installed PVC fascia boards on the sides and the front of the gable. Although I was tempted to install asphalt shingles on the gable porch roof addition myself, my entire roof needed to be replaced. For that reason, I decided to just hire a contractor to install new shingles and gutters on my entire house. It was expensive, but it saved me a whole lot of time. At this point, I turned my attention to the underside of the gable and I installed tongue and groove boards (as a soffit) to give the entire project a more professional look. I stained the lumber a "light walnut" color using Defy Wood Stain. One the electrical wiring was installed, I installed insulation between the study bays. I also installed insulation in the floor joists above to minimize the sound of foot-traffic from upstairs.
