This jam is a bit of a stretch for the theme, but I kind of like how it turned out. The theme phrase was "Per aspera ad astra" - from adversity to the stars. The track title is a play on astral projection, but apparently "asperal" can also mean " a chemical compound isolated from the plan known as prickly sow-thistle"
Colour Variations - minimal techno with Teenage Engineering OP-XY and Korg Monotron Delay mathew db 2025-07-05 | Monotron Delay was the second piece of gear I bought when I first started out making music - after the PO-32 Tonic. It's noisy and cheap, but it has a unique sound that I still enjoy; particularly in contrast with TE's extremely polite flagship. Here I'm using the Delay as a send effect for the Geordi sample on XY's track 8 via the multi-out.I'm still not practicing often enough to be fluid in my XY navigation, so I lose control briefly about 3/4 of the way through. I tried to recover by using EQ and mutes to distract from the mess and pretend I was setting up a drop.

68 - melodic house jam with Teenage Engineering OP-XY, PO-128 Mega Man with digdugDIY CV mod, TX-6 mathew db 2025-06-20 | When an email from @docshermsticks (digdigDIY) appeared in my inbox with a chance to grab the PO-128 modded with external CV control of the much sturdier and pleasantly colourful potentiometers, I had to jump on it. For this jam, PO-128 is providing a subtle crunchy bassline and some lofi drums. Each time I hold record on the PO, a new series of release lengths is written into the sequence by way of the CV pattern OP-XY is generating from its multi-out. XY is sending clock over ble to TX-6, which is in turn sending analog tempo to PO-128. I found this setup to be not completely stable; you can hear that the PO loses sync at the end.This recording is also where I really started to get stuck in on XY's Arranger mode. It's a powerful (if somewhat confusing) way to arrange tracks - though I wish we had more than nine patterns per track to work with for longer session and live performances. Anyway, you can see me stumbling around with it a bit at the beginning, before finding my footing.
Wave Bardo - Teenage Engineering OP-XY with Bastl Wave Bard mathew db 2025-05-03 | Yooo Bastl's new Wave Bard is an absolute riot. I'm not even a big sampler person, but this thing is a happy accident machine; a box of treats that manages to live in the sweet spot without having an obvious destination. Shout out to Bastl for their thoughtfulness and originality on this one - and also for the sound quality. I associate Bastl with lo-fi, which the Wave Bard can definitely do, but the starting point here is clean and punchy audio. Fun!
Teenage Engineering OP-XY dnb sketch mathew db 2025-04-08 | I've precious little time for jamming lately, but I did manage a small experiment with drum & bass on the OP-XY. Jungle, tech step and dn'b in general were the real gateway drugs for me after industrial music and the breakbeat techno of the early nineties first captured my attention. By the time I was old enough that I had cash for gear, I had mostly moved on to house and techno. I still love some good wobble bass though. Bigup!

I'm really loving the two separate environments for their individual strengths. The tabletop gear wins in the analog chonk department, that's for sure. I'm trying out some new camera angles that prioritize YouTube's landscape format. As a side effect of this experimentation my head makes several unscheduled appearances, and you can see all the grey hairs I've developed from troubleshooting my setup.

500 subs! Teenage Engineering PO-32 Tonic + Behringer EDGE techno sketch mathew db 2025-02-23 | When I started posting music on YouTube six years ago, 500 subscribers was my arbitrary goal. Not wishing to turn a fun hobby into a chore, I resolved to avoid focusing on promotion. I decided to simply post jams and see what happened.To the 500+ people who have taken a moment to subscribe, thank you! In celebration, I decided to do a jam featuring the first piece of gear I ever got - the PO-32 Tonic - and the most recent addition to the setup - the EDGE. TX-6 is sending analog clock to both, and at the ppqn required for the PO, the EDGE runs at half speed. This is the kind of raw and janky jam I started out with. Feels nice to get back to basics.
Teenage Engineering OP-XY + Behringer EDGE IDM workout mathew db 2025-02-16 | I got a nice local deal on an EDGE and I'm working on understanding how it works. It's kind of famous for grit and crunch, but I'm hoping to tame it. For this session the OP-XY is supplying a 16ppqs analog clock, and the audio from EDGE is running back through OP-XY's tape and FX buses. No post-processing; OP-XY's mastering section is gluing it all together.
OP-XY as a drum synth mathew db 2025-02-06 | I really want a drum synth engine on the Teenage Engineering OP-XY, and there has also been a fair bit of discussion online about the desire for a pitch envelope. While there isn't an actual pitch envelope on the unit as far as I know, there is an LFO that can drive pitch using the main track envelope. Applied to some of the synth engines, this can produce reasonable kicks and toms. Noise and filter settings on other engines can serve as hats, claps and other percussion, resulting in a workable, fully synthesized drum kit.This is the first time I've talked on a video. My setup really isn't configured for the task, and I am aware the audio isn't amazing. I don't really plan to keep going with this kind of thing, but I was excited enough about drum synthesis on the XY to make this as a one-off. Hope the tips are worth the ear torture.

It's not exactly in line with my style or instincts, but I can see some real utility in it. I wish there was a way to move between projects without stopping the sequencer, but I guess with some care to planning, 9 pattens x 8 tracks is enough to construct a decent live set.The main bell sound is sampled from my trusty Decadebridge sn (Tin).

Face Too Far Away - Teenage Engineering OP-XY mathew db 2025-01-03 | I'm still getting used to the XY. It sort of feels like an OP-1 possessed by the ghost of an OP-Z. This track takes too long to get going, and you can see me getting lost at times as I try to remember which page to be on. I totally lose control at the end and just mash some Punch-In effects.I love the sound though. The onboard mastering tools are awesome. I would really like a drum synth engine and some fairly basic sequencer upgrades. I also can't quite see yet how it would be possible to perform a whole live set on the XY - something that OP-Z can handle. Given the ongoing and substantial updates for TX-6 and their other field gear, I have faith that TE is going to show this device some firmware love in 2025.
