In 1824, the United States was emerging from the period of the so-called “Era of Good Feelings” during the James Monroe Presidency where there was a relative de-emphasis on party politics thanks to the Democratic-Republican Party more or less existing unchallenged during this time. But the good feelings were about to be gone, and a new era was rising where party politics would be tripled down on giving us the seeds of modern day politicking. On the one side was the decidedly hot tempered Andrew Jackson who had only 18 years before illegally killed a man in cold blood for calling him a “worthless scoundrel, ... a poltroon and a coward” but got away with it because, the past everybody. More on this in the Bonus Facts later. An orphan and perceived to be a man of the people, Jackson stood in stark contrast to the presidential candidates of yore in the country who largely came from either elite backgrounds or were groomed into politics from a young age.
Speaking of that, on the other side was John Quincy Adams. Quite literally groomed from childhood to become President someday, with his father, one-time President John Adams even writing to a young John Quincy Adams in 1794, “You come into Life with Advantages which will disgrace you, if your success is médiocre.— And if you do not rise to the head not only of your Profession but of your Country it will be owing to your own Laziness Slovenliness and Obstinacy.”
Yet a rather curious thing happened during the election of 1824. Andrew Jackson would go on to win not just the popular vote, but the electoral college, with Adams finishing well behind him on both in second place. And yet Adams, the inside man with friends in high places, was made President and Jackson nearly a footnote to history… That is, until an anonymous letter was published in the Philadelphia Columbian Observer that claimed Adams had made a secret deal with the speaker of the House Henry Clay such that if Clay would use his influence on the House to make him President, Adams would, in turn, make Clay the Secretary of State.
For context here, at the time, Secretary of State was the defacto office to have if one wanted to themselves become President someday. In fact, after the first and second Presidents in George Washington and John Adams, every President up to this 1824 election had previously served as the Secretary of State, and it was also the position John Quincy Adams presently held when he ran for President in this election.
What followed was a scandal that changed the course of United States history, helping to see Adams’ Presidency be largely ineffective and Henry Clay’s formerly insanely bright prospects at the nation’s highest office dashed, with his reputation among the general public forever sullied then and still pretty much to this day. This also saw Andrew Jackson’s star shining even brighter, with the scandal helping the otherwise largely unqualified and remarkably unstable Jackson to dethrone Adams in the next election.
But did the supposed bastion of puritanical ethics and rigidly moral to a fault John Quincy Adams, who very publicly vehemently opposed the spoils system, to the point that he even retained many officials in his administration from the previous who actively opposed and thwarted some of his efforts as President, truly throw off his normal extreme and well documented precepts and morals in his quest for the Presidency by making such a shady deal to rob the people of the United States of their chosen President?
Or was the whole thing just a 19th century viral conspiracy theory that blew up to change the course of history?
Well let’s dive into it, shall we, because this one is super fascinating.

As we’ve previously covered in our video What was Hitler Like as a Child?, Adolf Hitler had in some ways a rather nice childhood, centering around an upper-middle class lifestyle and all the opportunities and niceties that entails. But on the other hand, he was regularly severely abused as a child by his alcoholic father, who also regularly abused Hitler’s mother. Needless to say, Hitler didn’t exactly have the best role model for good, healthy relationships. And it gets worse. For example, his father, Alois, seemingly lived by the work credo of every store shelf stocker of “see a hole, fill a hole” when it came to women, whether he was in a relationship already or not.
For example, Hitler’s mother, Klara, was not only his father’s third marriage but became his father’s mistress while still married to the second wife, and possibly before when he was married to his first wife. Just to give you a very brief synopsis on this one, Klara, who was Alois’ niece or cousin depending on who his father was (this isn’t clear), was 16 when she found herself working for Alois when he was still married to his first wife. Later, she was fired when his future second wife, but current mistress, demanded he get rid of the servant girl owing to her jealousy of her. However, once wife #2 got sick with tuberculosis, Klara was re-hired as a housekeeper and caretaker for Alois and wife #2’s children. At this point, and as noted possibly before, Alois was apparently like “Don’t mind if I do!” and began sleeping with his niece/cousin, who got pregnant with the couple’s first child, Gustav, right around when wife #2 died.
Alois could have made a fortune on reality TV.
From all this, it may not be a total surprise that Hitler’s later love life was reportedly… a little abnormal, and not what anyone, even many in his day, would call healthy. Which brings us to the topic of today- Hitler’s niece, Angela “Geli” Raubal, who for a couple years there he more or less kept virtually imprisoned in his home as his mistress, and also had some rather interesting kinks tied up in all that that quite disturbed her. And then, suddenly, just after an alleged heated argument between the pair, Geli was writing a pleasant letter to a friend in Vienna about an upcoming get-together, when she inexplicably stopped writing mid-word and shot herself with one of Hitler’s guns... By all accounts, Hitler was out of town when she did this. But let’s just say even reporters in the country at the time found the entire thing suspicious and accused Hitler of murdering his niece or driving her to her suicide with his behavior.
So, did the future Fuhrer kill his beloved niece, or was she just one of a string of Hitler’s lovers (according to a report done by the the predecessor to the CIA, 6 known women) who suddenly decided they didn’t want to continue breathing, leading up to his last lover in Eva Braun who ended her life by his side.
Well, let’s dive into it all, shall we?

In Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 historical revenge fantasy Inglourious Basterds, U.S. Army Lieutenant Aldo Raine, played by Brad Pitt, recruits the titular Basterds - a squad of Jewish soldiers - to wreak havoc behind Nazi lines during World War II. In the process, they cross paths with a parallel British mission and a revenge plot by a French Jewish woman and succeed in gunning down Adolf Hitler and most of the Nazi high command in a burning French theatre. Ridiculous Hollywood nonsense, right? Well, not as much as you might think for not only did Allied Intelligence actually concoct a plan - dubbed Operation Foxley - to assassinate Hitler, but they also recruited a large number of Jewish refugees to conduct secret operations behind enemy lines. And by far the most successful of these, carried out in the dying days of the war, succeeded in saving thousands of lives and a key Austrian city from unnecessary destruction. This is the story of Operation Greenup, the real-life Inglourious Basterds.

For most of history between the point Nikola Tesla and Thomas Alva Edison were respectively doing their things to the present day, if you asked just about anyone which of these men were greater, you’d likely have gotten a response akin to “Nikola who? …I mean, Edison of course? He and God gave us light!” That said, if you asked someone when both were in their prime, you may have gotten a more mixed answer with, contrary to popular belief, Tesla in his day one of the most preeminent celebrity scientists in the world along with Edison. At least until extremely modern times when the internet masses have jumped on the Nikola Tesla hype train and generally vilified Edison as nothing but a charlatan, and someone largely responsible for Tesla’s fall from grace. But what is the truth here? Were either or even potentially both nothing but media hyping narcissists taking credit for others’ work? Were either or potentially both actually great men of history? What is the story between them and why are they so often compared? And overall, which one was actually a greater cog in the human technological advancement machine? And before you go answering this in the comments based on your current knowledge of the pair, let us caution you because in the history of researching and writing on all manner of topics to the tune of over 5,000 articles on our Todayifoundout website and over 2,000 videos here, we have never found any topic we’ve covered more rife with widespread and generally accepted myths when it came to BOTH the individuals we are going to cover today. So, dear viewers, get out your dinner and snacks or, if you’re watching this on the porcelain throne, prepare to have your legs fall thoroughly asleep while others in your household begin to wonder if you’ve died in there, because we are going to leave no stone unturned in order to try to rectify the rampant misinformation on both men

Until 1946, very few people had ever heard of Bikini Atoll. Located in the Marshall Islands chain 3,000 kilometres southwest of Hawaii, the atoll consists of 23 coral islands surrounding a central lagoon 30 kilometres wide. For thousands of years Bikini was home to a few hundred Marshallese islanders, who sustained themselves by fishing and cultivating coconuts. In 1885 the atoll was annexed by the German Empire, who used it as a production hub for coconut oil. Then, in 1914, the Empire of Japan - at that time part of the Entente Powers - captured the Marshall Islands from the Germans and in 1920 was awarded the chain by the League of Nations as part of their South Seas Mandate. In 1941, following the outbreak of the Second World War in the Pacific, Japanese troops occupied Bikini in order to protect the nearby - and strategically vital - Kwajalein Atoll. Bikini remained in Japanese hands until February 1944 when, after fierce fighting, American forces recaptured Kwajalein. By this time, the garrison on Bikini consisted of only five men, who all chose to commit suicide by hand grenade rather than surrender.
And there the story might have ended, with Bikini remaining just another coral speck among hundreds in the gruelling American island-hopping campaign. But in December 1945, less than four months after the Japanese surrender, a decision was made that would catapult this once-obscure ring of islands into the global spotlight. While it was clear to all that the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 had forever changed modern warfare, what was less clear was how exactly it had changed. As the Second World War gave way to the Cold War, military strategists began to wonder how best to use this awesome new weapon. Could it be deployed tactically on the battlefield, or was it only good for destroying civilian centres? And what kinds of targets was it most effective against? Particularly concerned about its role in the nascent atomic age was the U.S. Navy, which resented the Army Air Force’s monopoly on the delivery of nuclear weapons. The Air Force, meanwhile, argued that naval ships were extremely vulnerable to nuclear attack, and that the advent of such weapons had effectively made navies obsolete.

Moving on to cancer, typically when physicians are looking to find potential paths to cure people of various types of cancer, they’ll use tried and true methods proven to help in the aggregate towards this end. Other times, they’ll use new and experimental procedures that may help, or may do nothing, but generally trying to avoid doing harm. In all cases in most of the developed world, they’ll explain what they are going to do, and then ask for consent from their patient or their guardian or the like before administering any treatment regardless of what it is. But this is a relatively modern idea and in the wild west days of medicine that are just barely in our rearview mirror, few things were off the table, whether a given patient consented to something or not. This is the story of the eventual head of the American Cancer Society, Dr. Chester Southam, and his quest to see what would happen if he injected people, from healthy to terminal, with cancer. Along the way we’ll also be looking at whether it’s possible to catch cancer from another human, the cancers in certain animals that are spread directly via contact, even in one odd case to a human, and give yet another reason why mosquitoes should be eradicated from the Earth.
But before all that, our story today begins in 1963 at the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Enter the aforementioned Dr. Chester Southam, who, at the time, was working at the Sloan‐Kettering Institute for Cancer Research and Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases. While there, for about a decade, Dr. Southam had been experimenting with injecting people with cancer without their informed consent… He had gotten away with it up to this point. But that was about to end thanks to what happened at the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital...

While this scene might sound familiar, it did not take place on December 7, 1941 in Hawaii. The ships were not American but Italian, and the attacking aircraft not Japanese but British. On November 11, 1940, more than a year before America’s Day of Infamy, the Royal Navy launched the first-ever carrier airstrike against an enemy fleet at anchorage, attacking the Italian Navy’s home port of Taranto. The raid forever changed naval warfare, heralding the ascendancy of the aircraft carrier and setting the blueprint for a later, more well-known surprise attack. This is the story of Operation Judgement, Italy’s forgotten Pearl Harbor.

Your Majesty, Caesar, King, Emperor, Lord Protector, Excellency, Duke, these are only a handful of monikers given to leaders of nations throughout history. Picking from such official titles and honorifics to apply to one’s own leader when forming a new nation would seem rather straightforward… However, in a budding nation that vehemently rejected just about anything that was associated with the old world and its forms of government, deciding what to call their leader was anything but straightforward, and at one point brought the U.S. Senate to a screeching halt right from their earliest sessions. This is the fascinating, and mildly humorous, story of how the U.S. President got his then rather unique and extremely humble moniker amongst leaders of nations.

Occasionally accused of being “Modern day Pyramids” or “Monuments to someone’s ego”,
presidential libraries have long been divisive institutions, especially when first established.
However, while some have such perceptions of these libraries, it turns out there is vastly more
to them than many people realize, and the more distant we become to the eras these leaders
lived in, the more and more valuable the Presidential libraries become to our understanding of
history and our own evolution as a society, and as humans because of what they contain in an
absolute treasure trove of materials- where it’s not an exaggeration to say that a newly minted
college graduate historian could enter a given Presidential Library one day, spend the next five
decades of their career inside, and only scratch the surface of what that single library holds that
no other institution in the world has. So what exactly are presidential libraries really? What do
they contain? And how did this whole Presidential Library thing start in the first place?

The City of London -a one-square-mile enclave on the north bank of the River Thames, is the oldest borough in the UK capital -and one of the strangest. Though surrounded by and part of the sprawling metropolis known as Greater London, the City of London is in fact its own, semi-independent ceremonial county, with its own police force and governing body -the City of London Corporation. This city-within-a-city even has its own separate leader, the Lord Mayor of London, who holds traditional powers and privileges more than a thousand years old and is, unlike the regular Mayor of London, answerable only to the Sovereign. As the cultural and financial centre of London and the UK, the City is home to many of the capital’s most iconic buildings including St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Old Bailey courthouse as well as the headquarters of major financial institutions such as the Bank of England, the London Stock Exchange, and insurer Lloyd’s of London. In more recent years, however, the City has become famous -and sometimes infamous -for its collection of uniquely-designed skyscrapers, many of which have acquired suitably whimsical nicknames. These include 52 Lime Street -AKA “The Scalpel”; 122 Leadenhall Street -AKA “The Cheese Grater”; and 30 St. Mary Axe -AKA “The Gherkin.” While some have praised these structures for their architectural innovation, others have condemned them for spoiling the skyline of the ancient city. But whatever your opinion on the aesthetic merits of contemporary architecture, I think we can all agree that when a building starts inflicting property damage on the surrounding neighbourhood, something has gone horribly wrong. Such was the case with20 Fenchurch Street AKA the “Walkie-Talkie”, which midway through its construction transformed,supervillain-lair-style into a giant car-melting death ray. This is the story of London’s most controversial skyscraper.

Well, put your tray tables and seatbacks in their upright position, fasten your safety belt, and let’s nose dive into it all, shall we? And further look at a rather crazy incident in 2012 in Mexico in which the pilots deliberately parachuted out of a Boeing 727, which then plummeted towards the Earth afterward.

If ever there was an ultimate weapon of war, it would have to be the nuclear submarine. For more than 60 years, ballistic missile-armed submarines have prowled the world’s oceans, ready to unleash nuclear armageddon at a moment’s notice. Meanwhile, fast attack boats track and stalk the missile-armed ‘boomers’, the two rivals locked in a shadowy game of cat-and-mouse deep beneath the waves. But while nuclear deterrence is the modern submarine’s most famous mission, it is far from the only one. Throughout the Cold War and into the present day, these vessels have served as the eyes and ears of the Navy, using stealth and guile to perform covert reconnaissance of enemy shores. And perhaps the most daring and successful such feat of naval espionage took place in the early 1970s, when a U.S. Navy submarine snuck into a Soviet naval base to tap an underwater communications cable. This is the extraordinary story of Operation Ivy Bells.
