Composed by Wang Fandi and Wang Zhi in 1976 after their fieldwork in Yunnan Province, "Spring Dawn on the Lancang River" draws inspiration from sanxian melodies played by local folk musicians. Through the pipa's expressive palette, the piece ingeniously evokes the timbres of traditional ethnic instruments—the breathy bawu bamboo flute and the mellifluous hulusi—painting a vivid sonic portrait of southern Yunnan's landscapes and customs.
Morning after morning, spring waters rise;
Evening after evening, blossoms surge.
Year after year, clear skies bloom;
Season after season, tea leaves fragrance the air.

When "Horse Race" plays, the New Year spirit is complete! @Zhu Jing_—on her strings, a thousand horses thunder forth, bringing the surge of an entire spring rushing toward us.
This erhu classic, composed in 1959, draws its inspiration from the Mongolian folk song "Red Flag." Composer Huang Haihuai made bold innovations in this piece: a spray bow opens with an explosive attack like a volcanic eruption, instantly transporting listeners to the racetrack. Most notably, he pioneered extended pizzicato passages, allowing the erhu to "pluck" crisp, lifelike hoofbeats. Tremolo techniques evoke the timbre of the morin khuur (Mongolian horsehead fiddle), unfolding the vastness of the grassland. Throughout the piece, staccato and linked staccato passages mirror the rhythmic patter of hooves—galloping herds spring vividly from the strings.
For over six decades, "Horse Race" has resounded across China, becoming one of the most iconic BGM pieces etched into Chinese memory.
The 26th day of the twelfth lunar month—New Year's spirit deepens. May this melody accompany you as you gallop swiftly toward the new spring.
Share this "Horse Race" and may you lead the charge in the Year of the Horse! 🐎

The missing guqin is still nowhere to be found, and the chaotic sheet music just got a brand-new chapter! Last time’s mischief-makers who brought you “The Blended Moon and Radetzky” are still at large—and this year, it looks like new “agents of chaos” have infiltrated the ensemble!
How on earth did a perfectly fine rendition of “Horse Race” go completely off the rails—careening headlong into “Sabre Dance,” “Whipping the Ponies,” and “Super Mario”? Our virtuosic, morally upright conductor is once again put to the test. It’s time for every musician to “shine” in their own spectacularly questionable way!

"Guangling San" (Melody of Guangling)
This piece recounts the story of Nie Zheng’s assassination of the King of Han. The melody carries the force of a long rainbow piercing the corrupt Han court; beneath the fingers, thunder awakens Ji Kang’s extraordinary dream. The qin’s heart and the swordsman’s courage remain—the lost strains of Guangling live on today.
Shen Qi Mi Pu: Zhu Quan (“Recluse Immortal”) records: Ji Kang learned this peerless melody from a mysterious night visitor, who swore him to secrecy. Kang later offended the official Zhong Hui, who falsely accused him. Condemned to death, Kang played this tune one last time in the market, lamenting, “Now Guangling San ends with me.”
Only his nephew Yuan Xiaoji overheard part of it, later completing the piece. Of the two surviving scores, the version here comes from a Sui palace manuscript, passed down through Tang and Song courts over 937 years—the edition I deem authentic.
Compiled and published in 1425 by Zhu Quan, the Prince of Ning during the Ming Dynasty, Shen Qi Mi Pu (The Mysterious and Marvelous Tablature) stands as the earliest and most completely preserved dedicated collection of guqin tablature in existence in China. The anthology is divided into three volumes containing a total of sixty-four pieces. The first volume, entitled Tai Gu Shen Pin (Divine Pieces of Great Antiquity), includes sixteen compositions such as "Guangling San," "Jiu Kuang," and "Gu Feng Cao"—described as "secret melodies from remote antiquity, passed down by none." The middle and final volumes, collectively titled Xia Wai Shen Pin (Divine Pieces Beyond the Rosy Clouds), contain forty-eight pieces including "Wu Ye Ti," "Da Hu Jia," and "Li Sao," which the compiler noted were tunes he "had received in the past," largely comprising qin works widely circulated during the Song and Yuan dynasties. Hailed as the most prestigious transmitted tablature in history, it remains a treasured gem for all guqin practitioners.
The year 2025 marks the 600th anniversary of Shen Qi Mi Pu’s publication. To honor this milestone, Zi De Guqin Studio offers music in place of wine, reanimating ancient harmonies and reinventing their sounds, inviting all connoisseurs of the art to share in an intoxicating journey through strings and wood. This album presents live recordings from the Shen Qi Mi Pu 600th Anniversary Concert, which features thirteen pieces carefully selected from the tablature. Among them, five—"Shan Ju Yin," "Qiao Ge," "Tian Feng Huan Pei," "Da Hu Jia," and "Guang Ling San"—are performed as guqin solos, evoking echoes of timeless antiquity: the legendary axe-handle turning to dust, ethereal jade-like tones, frontier reed-pipes beyond the Great Wall, and the fierce clangor of spear and shield. Another six pieces—"Xuan Mo," "Yi Lan," "Lie Zi Yu Feng," "Fan Cang Lang," "Li Sao," and "Gu Feng Cao"—are newly arranged from ancient themes, blending silk and bamboo instruments in harmonious dialogue that honors the sages and stirs the soul; here one may sense a spirit wandering free from worldly cares, and glimpse a heart that ceaselessly seeks truth. The remaining two, "Jiu Kuang" and "Wu Ye Ti," are adapted from the original qin scores and recast for the ruan and the pipa; listen closely, and you may catch the crows squabbling over their nest, or join the unrestrained revelry of the Bamboo Grove.
Six hundred years of qin melody—behold the lofty mountain, and hear its voice in today’s strings.
Six hundred years of qin spirit—like ever‑flowing streams, it awaits the listening heart.

"Li Sao" (On Encountering Sorrow)
The music first captures the deep melancholy of Qu Yuan's exile, then rises into the agitation of questioning heaven. Clinging to principle in despair, it sings of an unyielding quest; by the river's edge, the strings resonate with a vow of no regret.
Shen Qi Mi Pu: The compiler Zhu Quan notes: Two versions exist—Qu Yuan's own in eighteen sections, and an eleven-section later tribute. The classic records: Qu Yuan, of the Chu royal clan, served as a high minister. Initially trusted, he was later slandered and exiled. In anguish, he wrote Li Sao, recounting wise rulers and tyrants, hoping to guide his king back to virtue. He warned against a treacherous Qin meeting, but his king went and died in captivity. The next king, swayed by more slander, banished him south. There, he wrote works like the Nine Songs, still hoping to be heard. In the end, with his state facing ruin, he poured his final plea into the strings of the qin.

"Jiu Kuang" (Wine Madness)
This piece begins with wine as its muse, using the cup's solace to lose worldly sorrows. Here, the zhongruan takes up the voice of the guqin, weaving in a novel delight. It bridges traditions and cultures, embodying the all-embracing spirit where “wine knows no bounds”—ensuring this golden chalice of inspiration is never lifted in vain.
Shen Qi Mi Pu (The Mysterious and Marvelous Tablature): In the preface, the compiler Zhu Quan, who styled himself “the Recluse Immortal,” notes: This piece was composed by Ruan Ji, a famed poet and thinker of the Wei-Jin period. Ji lamented that the true Way found no course in his world and that he stood apart from his age. Thus, he cast the world's cares beyond the confines of flesh and bone, pouring his inspiration into the vessel of wine to voice the aspiration that would content his lifelong spirit. Yet is its essence truly mere craving for wine? The Way dwells within it. Its mystery lies therein, and thus it is not spoken to the common ear—only the enlightened attain it.

Wu Ye Ti (Lament of Crows at Night)
Originally a melody from the Qing Shang repertoire of the ancient Music Bureau (Yuefu), this composition draws its inspiration from the lament of crows at night. Now reimagined for the pipa, it artfully weaves intricate and rapid passages to fully convey the subtle shift between a state of poised serenity and one of restrained agitation.
Shen Qi Mi Pu (The Mysterious and Marvelous Tablature): In the preface, the compiler Zhu Quan, who styled himself “the Recluse Immortal,” notes: This is indeed an ancient piece. He references the Treatise on Music from the Book of Tang, which records: "'Wu Ye Ti' was composed by Liu Yiqing, Prince of Linchuan during the [Liu] Song dynasty. In the 17th year of the Yuanjia era (440 AD), when Prince Pengcheng, Liu Yikang, was transferred to Yuzhang, Yiqing—then serving as the Governor of Jiangzhou—went to his post to meet him, and they wept together. Emperor Wen, upon hearing of this, found it strange and summoned Yiqing back to his residence. Yiqing was seized with great dread. That very night, his concubines heard the cry of crows in the darkness. They knocked on his chamber door and said, 'There will likely be a pardon tomorrow.' That same year, he was indeed reassigned as Governor of Nanzhou. It was for this reason that he composed the piece 'Wu Ye Ti'." Thus, the work by the Prince of Linchuan belongs to the ancient Yuefu ballad tradition, not specifically to the qin repertoire. In essence, however, the allegorical spirit shared between Yuefu ballads and qin pieces remains deeply akin.

"Da Hu Jia" (The Great Barbarian Reedpipe)
This piece tells of Wenji's return to Han. It carries the weight of duty to homeland—where reedpipe strains make Han and barbarian share one grief—and the ache of parting from kin—a lament poured into the qin, moving all hearts across time.
Shen Qi Mi Pu (The Mysterious and Marvelous Tablature): Zhu Quan (“the Recluse Immortal”) notes, citing The History of the Qin: “Cai Yan (Wenji), daughter of Cai Yong, was learned and skilled in music. Once, her father’s qin string snapped at night. Hearing it, she said, ‘The first string.’ When another broke, she said, ‘The fourth.’ Her father marveled. Widowed young, she was later captured by barbarians, made a queen, and bore two sons over twelve years. Moved by reedpipes one spring, she wrote: ‘Reedpipes stir, frontier horses neigh; The lone goose returns with plaintive cry.’ Emperor Wu later ransomed her back to Han, leaving her sons behind. The barbarians, yearning for her, would play sorrow on reed-leaf pipes. Later, Tang musician Dong Tinglan adapted this sound for the qin, creating Da and Xiao Hu Jia.”

"Yi Lan" (The Elegant Orchid)
This composition employs the graceful orchid as an allegory for the noble-minded gentleman—one who embraces solitude, resides in secluded tranquility, and turns away from worldly splendor and gaudy allure. Playing the guqin cultivates its pristine fragrance, while strumming the ruan refreshes its blossoming grace.
Shen Qi Mi Pu (The Mysterious and Marvelous Tablature): In the preface, the compiler Zhu Quan, who styled himself “the Recluse Immortal,” notes: Confucius offered his service to the lords of seventy states, yet never found a sovereign who truly recognized his worth. Returning to Lu from Wei, he came upon an orchid flourishing alone in a hidden valley. He sighed deeply and said, “The orchid is meant to be a kingly fragrance; yet here it thrives in solitude, mingling with common weeds!” He then stopped his carriage, took up his qin, and played, lamenting his misfortune in living out of his time, entrusting his feelings to the orchid: “Lush and graceful is the orchid, its fragrance borne afar. If none plucks it to adorn themselves, what loss is there to the orchid?” Thus did the wise ancients, moved by this sentiment, create this melody.
The first volume, entitled Tai Gu Shen Pin (Divine Pieces of Great Antiquity), includes sixteen compositions such as "Guang Ling San," "Jiu Kuang," and "Gu Feng Cao"—described as "secret melodies from remote antiquity, passed down by none." The middle and final volumes, collectively titled Xia Wai Shen Pin (Divine Pieces Beyond the Rosy Clouds), contain forty-eight pieces including "Wu Ye Ti," "Da Hu Jia," and "Li Sao," which the compiler noted were tunes he "had received in the past," largely comprising qin works widely circulated during the Song and Yuan dynasties.

Ai Nai (The Creak of Oars‘Ao Ai’)
Inspired by Liu Zongyuan’s line — “At the creak of oars, mountains and waters gleam green” — this piece paints a solitary boat adrift in mist-clad rivers, where the seeker journeys through winds and waves toward inner stillness.
The melody flows with serene vitality: stillness breathes into motion, transcendence awakens amid river mists and starlit seas—a soul wandering beyond the mundane, dreaming among clouds and radiance.
The Fisherman
by Liu Zongyuan, Tang Dynasty
Nightlong, the fisherman moors by western cliffs;
At dawn, he draws clear Xiang water, lights bamboo with Chu fire.
Mists fade, sun rises—yet no soul is seen,
At the creak of oars, mountains and waters gleam green.
Turning, he gazes skyward, down mid-current drifting;
Above the cliffs, untroubled clouds chase one another in ease.

Celebrating 600 Years of The Mysterious Tablature: Zi De Guqin Studio’s Anniversary Concert
In honor of the 600th anniversary of the publication of Shen Qi Mi Pu (The Mysterious Tablature), Zi De Guqin Studio raises a musical toast to this timeless legacy—reverberating ancient melodies while reinventing their voice, inviting all connoisseurs to revel in the resonance of silk and wood.
This concert features thirteen selected pieces from the anthology:
· Five solo guqin works—Shan Ju Yin (Mountain Dwelling Chant), Qiao Ge (Woodcutter’s Song), Tian Feng Huan Pei (Celestial Breeze and Ringing Jade), Da Hu Jia (Great Barbarian Reedpipe), and Guangling San (Guangling Melody)—evoking echoes of immortals, frontier lamentations, and thunderous battles.
· Six ancient pieces reimagined with ensemble arrangements—Xuan Mo (Profound Silence), Yi Lan (Orchid Elegy), Lie Zi Yu Feng (Liezi Riding the Wind), Fan Cang Lang (Rippling Blue Waves), Li Sao (Encountering Sorrow), and Gu Feng Cao (Ancient Air)—weaving strings and bamboo to embody sagehood, transcendence, and spiritual quests.
· Two adapted works—Jiu Kuang (Drunken Ecstasy) and Wu Ye Ti (Crows Crying at Night)—now performed on ruan and pipa, merging竹林七贤’s decadent charm with avian cries in a whimsical feast.
Six centuries of qin melodies:
Where lofty peaks meet contemporary voices.
Six centuries of qin spirit:
Flowing streams await discerning ears.
Join us on October 5th, at Shanghai Concert Hall.

Dongpo’s existence—a river voyage through storm.
Youth’s brilliance: Bianjing’s tide surging;
Midlife prison-shipwrecked. Yet Huangzhou’s exile
Refined true gold from gravel:
Straw sandals crushed thorns;
Mist and rain forged Red Cliffs’ celestial resonance.
Han Qi hailed him “vessel of vast destiny,”
Though unyielding edges thrice broke him—never his will.
Teaching in Hainan’s seas, shading willows on Hangzhou’s dykes,
He made heaven-earth his court.
Lu You praised: “Undeterred by fortune or calamity, his heart beat for the realm.”
Truth! Had he cloaked his spirit,
Would we have the Su who revolutionized Song ci,
Whose prose crowned the Eight Masters?
All weathers of eternity—
Dissolved in his laughter.
What do you hear in this music?
Zi De Guqin Studio Presents
A new adaptation of Calming the Waves, based on Deng Yiqun’s contemporary guzheng composition. Featuring Shi Xiaming (President of Jiangsu Kunqu Theatre, National First-Class Performer) as Su Shi, blending Kunqu vocal artistry with guzheng’s resonance, transforming the timeless verse into visible, audible grandeur:
"Listen not to the rain through forest leaves—
Why not chant and walk slow?"
In Tang Bin’s rearrangement, instruments mirror the poem’s spirit:
Guqin whispers like Su’s soliloquy
Guzheng sweeps like his brushstrokes
Erhu mourns like prison’s memory
Grand drum thunders like his defiance
A sonic storm—smoke, bamboo, rain—carving Dongpo’s soul.
——
Huangzhou, 1082 (Yuanfeng 5th Year)
On his way to Shahu Lake, Su Shi was caught in a sudden downpour—raindrops piercing through the forest canopy.
In the preface to Calming the Waves, he noted with characteristic detachment:
"Seventh day of the third month: Rain on the Shahu Road. The rain gear had gone ahead; my companions scurried in distress, but I felt nothing. Soon, the skies cleared—thus, this lyric."
While others fled in panic, he alone walked slowly, leaning on a bamboo staff, straw sandals treading the mud, chanting aloud:
"A straw cloak—let it shield me through life’s mist and rain. Who’s afraid? With bamboo staff and sandals, lighter than a horse I go."
Dongpo the Recluse: Unfettered, laughing through adversity, his mind unshackled from worldly cares.
He was forty-seven that year. Three years earlier, the Black Terrace Poetry Case had nearly cost him his life in the Censorate’s prison. Thanks to allies’ appeals, he was spared death—exiled instead as Deputy Militia Commissioner of Huangzhou, a hollow title with meager pay.
East of Huangzhou’s walls lay two barren acres he reclaimed as "Eastern Slope", building a hut and tilling the land. In poverty, he found solace by the river—drinking, composing poetry, drifting in boats. His career had plunged, yet his art soared to new heights.
Calming the Waves (Listen Not to the Rain) stands among his most transcendent works from this period. A fleeting moment expands into profound meditation on life’s storms and release:
"Turning my head to the bleak path behind,
I go back—
No wind, no rain, no light."
After surviving political storms and prison’s shadow, Dongpo emerged not embittered, but lucid. This ci echoes the equanimity of Red Cliffs Ode—"Only the river’s breeze, the mountain’s moon"—and foreshadows his later exile resilience: "Three hundred lychees a day—I’d gladly stay in Lingnan!"

On June 21, 2025, Zi De Guqin Studio revived the "Taigu Yi Yin" Guqin (太古遗音琴) at Long Museum's Civilization Imprinted Through Time exhibition. This video documents the instrument's historical significance.
Due to exceptional demand (tickets sold out in 30 minutes), we share this archival footage for scholarly study.

• Physical Traces of Time
• Zhongni-Style (仲尼式) with tong (桐木) body
• Lacquered black over vermilion base
• Complex duanwen (断纹) patterns:
longlin (龙鳞, dragon-scale)
guiche (龟坼, tortoise-shell)

• Epigraphic Treasures
• Faded seal script "Taigu Yi Yin" (太古遗音), only "日" radical of "音" legible
• Longchi (龙池) inscriptions:
"Wear sword to conquer gold, but pause;
Play this zither like flowing water at will."
(Calligraphy resembling Wang Xizhi's "Preface to Sacred Teachings")
• Zhu Xi's poem carved below longchi:
"Nurture your balanced nature,
Restrain wicked desires in strife.
Heaven-earth speaks not, yet all things have laws –
I alone plumb depths with you, my zither in life."

• Acquired in 1950s: Journeyed overnight to Suzhou upon hearing of its survival
• Acclaimed for "resonating at a breath's touch – the quintessential vintage tenor voice."
• Used for Wu's landmark recording "The Art of Wu Jinglüe"

On June 21, 2025, Zi De Guqin Studio performed at Long Museum's Civilization Imprinted Through Time exhibition, reviving three Song Dynasty guqins. This video features the complete Liu Shui (Flowing Water) on the "Long Sheng Yu Jiang" Guqin
Due to overwhelming demand (tickets sold out in 30 minutes), we release this archival performance for global guqin scholars.

According to Long Museum Archives:
• Form & Craft
• Zhongni-Style (仲尼式) with flat-wide body, exemplifying Song guqin aesthetics

• Lacquered black with prominent shefu duanwen (蛇腹断纹, snake-belly crackle)
• Golden hui (徽) markers & jade yanzu (雁足) feet
• Inscription & Origin
• Seal script "龙升雨降" above longchi (龙池)
• Daoist symbolism: May signify imperial enthronement ceremonies
• Hypothesized: Crafted mid-Song Dynasty, possibly from Emperor Huizong's "Xuanhe Hall Hundred Guqins Collection" (宣和殿百琴堂)
• Acoustic Properties
• Ji Kang's Ode to Guqin
"Born of the phoenix tree (椅梧) on sacred peaks,
Imbued with heaven-earth's essence, sun-moon's radiance."
• Thick tong-zi woods produce "resonance both restrained and lustrous, like jade striking ice – supremely expressive with silk strings."
• Provenance
• Formerly owned by Wu Jinglüe (吴景略), preeminent 20th-century master
• His son Wu Wenguang (吴文光) recorded stereo tapes for Hong Kong's Ngaize Sing Records (香港艺声公司) on this instrument .
