This is the 2nd test because the first time I used 12 volts on the fan which then supplied so much air that the stove got red hot on the top. So hot that it burned away the J-B Weld that I used. It's basically a device that lets me monitor and control the camera remotely.I use it when I do videos outside to make sure that I am in frame. Hiram Cook 2016-07-28 | In this video I see if the Goal Zero Guide 10 Recharger/Battery Pack can power the Power Practical Luminoodle and for how long.What I did was I had the Goal Zero Guide 10 Recharger/Battery Pack hooked up to a Goal Zero Nomad 7 Portable Solar Panel and let it charge in bright sun for 4 hours. I used 4 Eneloop AA rechargeable batteries in the Goal Zero Guide 10.Then I hooked up the Power Practical Luminoodle to the Goal Zero Guide 10 and ran it until it went out. This took about 2 hours and 41 minutes.Today I hooked up the Goal Zero Guide 10 to the Goal Zero Nomad 7 Portable Solar Panel and put it out in the sun. Problem that came up was that a big thunderstorm rolled in at about 2 hours and 50 some minutes and that's where this video starts. Trangia Simmer Ring Idea Suggested by lweaver99 - Tested Hiram Cook 2016-07-23 | Below is a message I got from lweaver99 a couple of months ago. Some of you may know him as the guy that sometimes sells the "Mojo" pot stand on ebay. In his message he shared an idea for a simmer ring for the Trangia burner that sounds pretty cool.In this video I try it out and found that it really works great and is easy to make.Thank you, lweaver99, for making a great pot stand for the Trangia, and for sharing your simmer ring idea.And thank you for watching my videos,Hiram Hi Hiram;I've been thinking about you, and yes, I have seen the video. But thanks for keeping me up dated. Right after that video came out I couldn't keep up with the demand. You have quite a following! ...... I did stumble onto something you might want to try, it's great for baking or a long simmer. I had a simmer ring for a penny stove that I had made. It's the top part of a soda can cut off at about 1 1/8 inches with the pull tab end cut out so that it makes sort of a cone 1 1/8 inches tall. It fits over the top of the Trangia burner perfectly. Pull the O-ring out of the burner lid, drop it in the Mojo and put the burner on the lid. That raises the burner up to the right height for the new simmer ring . After the burner has blossomed, put the new simmer ring on that only leaves about a 1/4 inch to the bottom of the pot and it will simmer for over an hour. Also it makes it almost windproof. The alcohol burns off a little faster baking, but at a simmer I have had the fuel last about an hour and 45 minutes. It really increased the burn time. Battle of the Fancy Feast Stoves - Small vs Tall Hiram Cook 2016-07-21 | There's been a lot of discussion about the Fancy Feast Stove with the full, un-cut tomato paste can, gives better boil times and run-out times than my standard Fancy Feast stove with the 1" flame gap.I figured I would do a series of four, boil and run-out tests with each type of Fancy Feast Stove. And then find out what the average time to boil and run-out time for each type was.I had already done two tests with what I thought was the full, un-cut tomato can stove when I saw that I had used the Fancy Feast Stove with the tomato can cut down to a 1 3/8" (1.375") flame gap. This was the Fancy Feast Stove version I had made to test with the Sterno Inferno. Since I had already done two tests with this stove I figured I would finish the tests with it. I'm pretty sure the results will be pretty close to the same ones I would have gotten if I had used a stove made with a full size tomato can.In these tests the "Time to Run-out" is when either the flames go out or the temperature drops below boiling, whichever happens first.These are the results I got. Please keep in mind that there was an hour (or more) between tests so that everything can get back to room temperature (around 87° F).Also the starting water temperature was 45° F (about the temperature of water coming out of my refrigerator) so I didn't have to wait for all the water to get to 60° F as usual. This material works great for wind screen. Steinwaygoat sent me a box of rocks (agates) Hiram Cook 2016-04-16 | I want to apologize for my absence but I've had some obligations and a bathroom remodel that kept me from uploading or even watching any new videos. I was finally able to get to the post office while the window was open to pickup a package that steinwaygoat set me.You might remember my mentioning steinwaygoat in my video, "What Is My Favorite Alcohol Stove Pot Stand?". She's a goat packer from Wyoming and she's uploaded a bunch of videos of her and her goats out in the wilds. She also has a couple of videos where she plays a really cool ocarina in a grain silo. Talk about great acoustics. Fancy Feast Stove - Modified for Isopropyl Alcohol Hiram Cook 2016-02-24 | In this video I use a modified Fancy Feast Stove,suggested by FlatCatGear, to burn Isopropyl Alcohol (91%) without sooting up the pot.Jon over at FlatCatGear commented on my video,"Fancy Feast Stove - Methanol vs Isopropyl Alcohol", "If you cut the pot support down to about 1/2" or less, Iso should work fine (no soot, no yellow flames). The problem with wick stoves and Iso is that you end up leaving residual water in the wick. Vargo Titanium Converter Stove - 1 fl oz - Burn Test 3 - Primer Pan Hiram Cook 2016-02-18 | In my last couple of videos we've been trying different ways to get the Vargo Titanium Converter Stove to bloom without filling it with 2 fluid ounces of fuel. So far when I used 1 fluid ounce of methanol alone, the stove burned over 21 minutes without getting to a bloom. I stopped the test out of boredom.Kristyanna Virgona suggestion ".... put a small coil of carbon felt to used as a wick, in the center of the Vargo stove that way you would not need to put 60 ml of fuel". That worked a little better. The stove came to a bloom in 13 minutes and 21 seconds but we need to bring that time down.So in this video I try the suggestion I got from several people, to use a primer pan under the stove. Primer pans are usually work if there is room under the burner.I think one of the big problems with the Vargo Titanium Converter Stove is that it's made out of titanium. Titanium is stronger than steel but it's really lousy when it comes to tranfering heat (Thermal Conductvity). Titanium tranfers something like 10 times less than aluminum. Vargo Titanium Converter - One Way To Save Un-used Fuel Hiram Cook 2016-02-15 | In this video I show one way to save un-used fuel in a Vargo Titanium Converter for the Vargo Titanium Hexagon Wood Stove.In my first burn test on the Vargo Titanium Converter we saw that the stove had to be pretty near filled up to get it to light. Filling up the stove just to heat up a cup of water for a hot drink could really waste alcohol. Fancy Feast Stove with a Sand Wick Hiram Cook 2016-02-13 | My last couple of videos have been on Fancy Feast stoves that I either made or bought. There's been a bit of talk about how much the wick material costs. Carbon felt/fiber isn't real cheap, and now we see that it has a problem of shrinking over use.Fiberglass cloth isn't very cheap either.In ths video I use a REALLY, REALLY cheap wicking material, sand. The Purpose of the Wick in a Fancy Feast Stove Hiram Cook 2016-02-06 | In this video I explain why a Fancy Feast Stove has a wick and how the wick works.On my video, "Fancy Feast Stove With No Wick" keith moore commented, "you ask me the wick is mainly there to act as a spacer anyway, most of these stoves seem to need to be lit in the center anyway?"I've had several people pretty much say the same thing that Keith said so I thought maybe I should explain why a Fancy Feast Stove has a wick and how the wick works.First off let me just say wicks work because of something called "capillary action". I'm not going to explain how capillary action is defined as the movement of liquid within the spaces of a porous material due to the forces of adhesion, cohesion, and surface tension, but rather let's just say capillary action, which is also sometimes called wicking, is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces.Take a paper towel from example, like the one I used in the Fancy Feast stove the other day. Paper towels absorb liquid through capillary action, sucking up a liquid from a surface to the towel.Another example is a straw in a glass of soda. Did you ever notice that the soda in the straw is a little higher than the soda in your glass? "Capillary action" causes that.One more example is something almost everyone did in grade school, the old "celery stalk in a glass of water with food coloring" experiment where you watch the color water move to the top leaves of the celery. In this video I will replace the celery with a piece of that ceramic fiber I used the other day. Zelphs Fancee Feest Stove - Lighting Instruction Modification Hiram Cook 2016-02-01 | In my last couple of videos on Zelph's Fancee Feest Stove I've said that I haven't been able to light the stove by the wick as said in the instruction sheet. The problem seems to be that the stainless steel pot stand is pushed all the way to the bottom of the outer can and there are no holes to let the alcohol through to the wick like in my Fancy Feast stoves.Well, I started to wonder. What if I pull the stainless steel pot stand up a little to leave a gap for the alcohol to get through?We see in this test that pulling up the pot stand does work.
