Making My Own Plywood for Refacing Cabinets in Cherry. But it is fairly solid, and it is built into that small room, extending from wall to wall. Ripping out the entire cabinet would be a much larger job than we are interested in. More expensive also.I decided that I would just reface it -- make new doors and trim of cherry to match the cabinets in our kitchen.However, I did not have any cherry plywood left. I only need a very small amount of plywood for the panels, so I decided to just "make" my own plywood, but ripping some cherry into thin veneers, and gluing it to a thinner piece of plywood.I first tried resawing on the bandsaw but it was horribly slow, and I had trouble maintaining a straight cut. Instead I resawed on my table saw. Shellac as the universal sealer between finish coats Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) 2024-02-18 | Yes you can put Waterbased Poly over Oil stain! // WnW295 👇👇 Click “Show More” for Stuff you probably want to know! 👇👇This is just a quick little piece where I talk about another option for finishing.I used some (old) oil-based stain on a piece, and I wanted to put Waterbased polyurethane over top.I have done so before -- just make sure that the oil stain is FULLY cured and dry before doing so. Usually you can find this allowed for in the instructions.However, in this case I was using an old can of stain which DID NOT say any such thing, and my polyurethane had been moved to a jar, because the can was failing. So I did not have the original can with original instructions.Still, it probably would have been fine. But I also had some sealcoat shellac, and that is known as the "universal bonding coat" or something like that. That is to say, you can put (dewaxed !!!) shellac OVER any finish, and also UNDER any finish. How to Build a Unique Tealight holder Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) 2024-02-01 | Can't help it, I love stripes of contrasting wood colours👇👇 Click “Show More” for Stuff you probably want to know! 👇👇This was a scrap wood project made from: Walnut, Osage Orange, Maple, and White Oak lumber.Down the middle is a piece of walnut. Then moving out from there are two pieces of Osage orange lumber, then Two pieces of Maple, and finally two pieces of White Oak.I wanted to elevate the candles a bit, as many Tealight holders are very low. But my wife suggested that I find a way to carve away at the base so it wasn't so "heavy" looking.Overall dimensions are 4 inches tall, 6 inches long, and just under 3 inches thick. The Tealight candles are 1-1/2" in diameter, so I drilled 1-5/8" holes for them, about 1/" deep. The giant hole through the middle is 2-1/2" in diameter, with matching partial holes cut into each end. The way to build it is all the same.This is going to be a sewing desk for my wife's craft room.I decided that I wanted to build the top out of white oak, just because I hadn't used White Oak in a while, and wanted to do something different.As a side note, regular viewers know that I work a lot in Cherry. Cherry is gorgeous wood, but it is on the softer side of the domestic hardwoods. For a desk or work table I would usually go for something harder, like Maple, Oak, Walnut or something like that. But to be fair, you could also make the top out of plywood. But the cost of plywood is getting pretty expensive, and I still know of a lumber mill an hour out of town that sells locally sourced hardwood at a fair price.In contrast, for the legs I went with common 2x10 Construction Lumber from the local Building Supply store. Around here those are Spruce, and I thought the pale colour would nicely contrast the White Oak top. They're also fairly inexpensive and easy to find and easy to work with. I find that 2x10 and 2x12 lumber is of FAR greater quality wood than buying 2x4 and 2x6 boards. The base is inspired by similar cantilever-style desk bases from Matthias Wandel of woodgears.ca fame. Why am I ripping out my 4 Dust Collector Pipe? Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) 2024-01-06 | Dust Collection Work and Improvements // WnW293👇👇 Click “Show More” for Stuff you probably want to know! 👇👇(SORRY!! Discovered too late that my video software had gotten mixed up and generated only a 720p video file. I almost always upload 1080p/HD so I am not sure how this happened!)This video has two parts. Kind of.First, I decided that I had too much DC pipe in my shop, as I almost never use the DC pipe for the drill press, and I also have started using a shopvac for my 3 sanders at the end of the DC line. The sanders seem to do better with the higher velocity air of a shopvac.So there was no reason to have my existing Dust line extend past the tablesaw. And if it wasn't there, then the DC would not have to pressurize that pipe, so I have to believe that removing that would improve overall performance. So out with the old 4in pipe.Second, I wanted to improve things for those three sanders. Instead of having to manually swap the shopvac hose from tool to tool, I added some 2-1/2in pipe and blast gates so all three tools are already plumbed for dust collection. I will just leave the Shop vac loosely connected at the end of the pipe. Those boards almost always have the pith (center of the tree) in them, which is the most unstable part of the tree. 2x3 and 2x4 boards, when used for furniture, are likely to twist and cup.Instead, if you have the tools to process lumber (like a tablesaw), then I recommend that you buy the WIDEST BOARDS that you can. Specifically, look at 2x10 or 2x12 lumber. These boards are bigger, so they need to come from bigger trees, which means if you sort through the stack you can much more easily avoid any boards with pith in them. In fact, you can very easily find boards with lots of nice straight grain, and even quarter-sawn grain.Yes, you still want to make sure that the wood is dry and acclimated to your shop. I always buy the wood ahead of time and let it rest in my shop for several days or more.IMPORTANT: I'm talking about BUILDING FURNITURE. Well, I will admit that it is quite pretty. I was very proud of the stripes that got progressively narrower.My mum is downsizing now, and so this board came back to us and I thought I'd refresh it. So I first sanded it with some 150 grit sandpaper and then wiped on a fresh coat of Claphams Beeswax Salad Bowl finish (a mix of mineral oil and beeswax).But the mystery is, I have no recollection at all of what wood species I used for this. I know that the pale wood is Maple, but what is the dark burgundy? is it Jatoba? Padauk? We'd cut out a bit early, and I was home in the mid afternoon.I just felt like playing in the shop, and had an idea to build a little scrap wood project to make a laptop storage shelf that could hold two or three laptops.I just wanted to have some fun in the shop, and also make something useful to me.I knew that this would be of interest to virtually no one else, so I didn't feel any need to make a video about this. And it would be fun to not worry about filming.But then I thought, that maybe I'd film a bit of it on my cellphone, just for instagram, or maybe a YouTube short...But the more I thought about it I also thought about how so many channels shut down over Christmas, so that there are very few new videos released. So I thought that there might be some folks out there who just enjoy "dropping by my shop" and seeing what I'm working on.So that lead to this.It's still very rough, shot on a cellphone, with some shaky hand held footage and some audio issues. In this video I'm making a whole bunch of equally gorgeous coaster sets, but only in a few hours of work.I made these the same way I like to make long-grain cutting boards - by carefully choosing and combining different species of wood strips to make a pleasing pattern. One bonus is that you can probably make these using skinny scrap wood that you already own.But wait, there's more! It's got lots of room for plants to spread out, and has an interesting airy look to it, as the different levels are perched on slender legs.I made ours out of solid cherry, and it's mostly made of smaller pieces of wood. It only becomes large once you put it all together.This was a fun challenging build. First there is the standard sorting and choosing and processing wood. Then there is making a panel that is bigger than my planer can handle. Then came making five identical perfect circles with a bandsaw jig, something I've never done before. Next was trying to figure out how to get all those skinny legs to line up and stand still while it is all fastened together. It was one of those projects that became both more difficult and more satisfying as it went along.And finally, and I'm not lying... Late in the evening we were out again and upon arriving at home I noticed that the bookcase was still there. So after we parked the car I wandered over to confirm that it was a piece of junk and that I was right to ignore it...And it was an actual modular Barrister's bookcase. Four modules that click together like legos. Almost undoubtedly 50+ years old. (Wrong. Later I figure it is more like 100 years old.) And I'd ignored it and left it in the rain... I promptly grabbed a furniture dolly from the garage and carted it home. Sure it was dirty, water damaged, and I didn't NEED one. (aka carbide spiral/segmented cutter head)My jointers is a Delta X5 model 37-866xHowever, it is very similar to these models: 37-195, 37-190, 37-196, 37-275x, 52-858, 52-866x.There are only a few factories worldwide that produce most jointers for different manufacturers, so a lot of jointers are very similar to each other. So the methods I demonstrate here, will likely at least partially apply to your jointer. It had been growing for quite a few years, so we had some hefty logs to cut as we pruned it back.On a whim, I saved a few sections of the cut logs, painted the ends, and tossed them up into my wood rack in the shop and left them year.Fast forward two years to now... I was about to start a small scrapwood project, and I decided to pull out these logs and see if I could get some actual (small) pieces of lumber out of them. I rigged up a sled to hold the logs while I milled two 90-degree edges on the band saw. From there it was a simple matter to rip out some boards and after that it was planing and jointing as per normalThe wood was fairly soft, kind of like spruce, and it was a definite green-yellow colour. The first one seemed good, so I made a dozen or so more, sanded off the roughness and attached them with a screw. I considered making one, but did not have a suitable motor. A sale came up at Princess Auto, so I decided to buy THE CHEAPEST 1x30 belt/strip sander that I could find. Let's take a look at it.Never fear, my American Friends... I checked Harbor Freight's website and they appear to have the same sander, just a different colour. (TO be clear: I have not laid hands on the HF unit; I'm just judging by the specs on the website, and the fact that we all know that lots of bench tools out there seem to be just rebranded versions of a very similar tool.)And if you really want, I also found what appears to be another one on Amazon.com, but it is the most expensive of the three.In the end, this sander cost me less than a full tank of gas in my minivan. It's pretty much fully assembled, and works almost straight out of the box.I'm pretty happy with my purchase so far. Renew a Trash Picked Cabinet // WnW 271 Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) 2022-11-04 | From tired old pine to modern and fresh👇👇 Click “Show More” for Stuff you probably want to know! 👇👇In this video I take an old sideboard that was thrown out in the trash and give it a new lease on life.My son and daughter-in-law needed some new storage in their apartment and asked if I could help build them some sort of cabinet. Not even three days later -- before we had even begun to discuss a design -- I came across this cabinet a few houses up the street. It had been put out for trash pickup.I checked with my son and daughter-in-law and they said it looked workable so we grabbed it and the renewal began.I started by sanding down the top to bare wood as it was quite beat up. I then scuff-sanded the body and painted it with a cabinet-grade gloss white latex paint. The top was stained with an espresso gel stain and then covered in 4-5 coats of polyurethane. Finally, my daughter-in-law picked up some new oil-rubbed-bronze knobs and pulls to complete the transformation.It was mostly pine and pine veneer, so it is definitely a softwood piece. So we know that it will gather dings and dents over the year and earn a patina of age. Our kids are now grown, so they no longer are interested in carving pumpkins, but we still like to have some displays up for trick-or-treat'ing.I wanted to keep things simple so I tried to just use three simple tools: a Drill, a Jigsaw, and a small Circular saw. I did cheat and use an air nailer as well, but you can assemble all the parts using a regular hammer and nails.For wood, I just used some (cedar) fence boards purchased from the home centre. If you want a rustic look, you could cut up a pallet, or find some old barn boards or similar.Finally, I wanted to paint mine, since real pumpkins are orange. This portion of the closet is on an outside wall, and we had a particularly cold January. So I suspect the cold gradually migrated through the walls which led to condensation.
