The history of Black people's relationship with the police is complicated. From hate to love and everything in between, Black America has tried everything to negotiate its relationship with law enforcement. All while enduring a nearly endless stream of discourse about crime in low income Black communities. In this video, I turn the attention away from Black on Black crime, and toward the failed tough on crime projects, often led by Black elected officials and cosigned by Black community members.

The diaspora wars have been raging for years, so I went searching for an answers to the question "who gets to be Black?!?" I've been watching the growing tensions between parts of the ADOS/FBA community and parts of the Black immigrant community in America. From name-calling and online harassment to the creeping anti-Black-American sentiments harbored among Black immigrant, we talk about all of it. We also take a little detour into the complexities of complexion in the Black community.
There is a lot here, so let me know what you think in the comments!

President Barack Obama was tasked with helping the nation navigate all of it. The Supreme Court's decision to uphold a critical part of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and legalize same-sex marriage marked major progressive victories for the country. At the same time, President Obama was headed to Charleston, SC where, just days earlier, a young white male had walked into a Black church and massacred nine people during a Bible study.
In my interview with the 44th President of the United States of America, he reflects on that time, and the magic of democracy when people come together to fight for a better tomorrow.

Trump's second first 100 days have left me with a lot more questions than answers. He doesn’t have a clear economic agenda. He doesn’t have a clear foreign policy agenda. DOGE is his most well-known accomplishment and is deeply unpopular. He’s hostile toward our closest allies and ushered us into an unnecessary trade war with China. We are in a full blown constitutional crisis. This is, objectively, a mess.
But what has always been obvious to me is that Trump and the people he is allied with have a clear racial agenda; and over the last 100 days, that agenda has been on full display.

For the last month experts, pundits and commentators have been insisting that they know exactly why Kamala Harris lost. But I've been wondering what regular people think. So I talked to a few random people in Atlanta about why, in their opinion, Kamala Harris was unable to defeat Donald Trump. I learned a lot, and I think you will, too.

In the final weeks of her presidential campaign, Kamala Harris has turned her attention toward Black people — especially Black men. She’s released a plan for Black men, gone on a Black media tour to talk about her Opportunity Agenda, and can be found in someone’s church every Sunday. Something about her efforts to court the Black community feels different. Democrats have known that they cannot win national elections without Black people, but In many ways, Kamala Harris is saying the quiet part out loud. In this video, we talk about why.

#dei #diversity #history #politics #wokenessShould Joe Biden drop out? 1968 may have the answer.Garrison Hayes2024-07-04 | They say history doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes—and 2024 is, no matter how inconvenient for an embattled Joe Biden, resonating deeply with 1968. To be clear, these two years, 2024 and 1968, are very different.... But from anti-war protests on college campuses to the Democratic National Convention being hosted in Chicago, these two distinct years, though decades apart, are drawing eerie comparisons.
After a poor showing in the very first presidential debate, Joe Biden has been faced with growing pressure to drop his bid for reelection. So in this video, we turn to history to see if that's a good idea.
I'm on Instagram: instagram.com/garrisonh I'm on TikTok: TikTok.com/@garrisonhayesWhy are Black people still Christian?Garrison Hayes2024-04-07 | If God exists, why does he allow Black people to suffer the way that they do. For starters, Christianity has been used a brutal tool of oppression against Black folks for as long as this country has existed. Outside of the US, Christianity and the Bible motivated colonizers to commit some of the worst atrocities the planet has ever seen.
The track record of this religion is clear and it isn’t looking great. So why did Black people, when surveyed by the Pew Research Center, identify as Christians at nearly 80%? Significantly more than their non-Black peers.
That’s what I want to talk about in this video. I spoke to a Black woman pastor who sees herself represented in Jesus as well as a Black professor who identifies as atheist and sees no evidence of a God interested in the oppressed.” At the end, I wrestle with my own journey around faith. I hope you enjoy

As a recent homebuyer in Nashville, I've been thinking a lot about the impact that my presence in this historically lower-income neighborhood might have on the community. I've seen the changes happening around me - trendy coffee shops, artisanal boutiques, and upscale restaurants popping up where there used to be only local businesses and family-owned shops. And while I'm excited to be a part of a revitalizing neighborhood, I'm also concerned about the potential negative effects of gentrification.
That's why I decided to reach out to Dr. Nishani Frazier, a scholar who has extensively researched gentrification and its impact on marginalized communities. In our conversation, Dr. Frazier helped me better understand the complexities of economic change in urban communities and challenged some of my preconceived notions about gentrification.
One of the things that Dr. Frazier emphasized was the fact that gentrification is not a monolithic phenomenon - there are many different forms of gentrification, and they can have vastly different impacts on communities.
