Durante una visita del emperador al último sitio de batalla de Maximus, Marco Aurelio le propone al general que sea el emperador de Roma debido a que confía más en él que en su propio hijo Commodus. Maximus rechaza la oferta pero el emperador no desiste y justo antes de morir, es visitado por su hijo Commodus quién, al enterarse del deseo de su padre, lo asesina convirtiéndose de inmediato en emperador.
