It’s the first song that was ever written for VEMØD back in the summer of 2021. The idea for “There is Nothing // All is Void” came as I watched a documentary about the potential of life on other planets and there was a line that said, ”We are essentially an island in the darkness”. That really woke something up in me, not just from a perspective of the universe but also of the self. Sometimes you can feel like an island in the darkness, that you’re all alone in your universe, and I really wanted to highlight that dualism in the lyrics. Musically, it's by far the most progressive song on the EP.

This song was written and produced by myself and recorded, mixed, and mastered by Rob Kukla at Obsidian Recording Studios.

"Behold! The first song that was ever written for VEMØD back in the summer of 2021. The idea for “There is Nothing // All is Void” came as I watched a documentary about the potential of life on other planets and there was a line that said, ”We are essentially an island in the darkness”. That really woke something up in me, not just from a perspective of the universe but also of the self. Sometimes you can feel like an island in the darkness, that you’re all alone in your universe, and I really wanted to highlight that dualism in the lyrics. "I’m proud to introduce you to VEMØDs 2nd single ”Matriarch”! I went a lot more metal with this one as I wanted to create something that stood in stark contrast to the debut single ”Demons Within”. This one is a lot more fast-paced and riff-based but still has a huge, pop-influenced chorus and a heavy, seriously down-tuned breakdown. Being a guitar guy since childhood, growing up with Yngwie Malmsteen, Jeff Loomis, etc. I decided to put a really shreddy solo in there as well. In short, there’s a lot going on in the 3 minutes and 11 seconds that this song plays. Production-wise, I wanted to bring some more aggression into the mix, so a lot of effort went into getting the production to have more bite than the debut single." - Jonathan Thorpenberg, VEMØD
