The series started all the way back in 1993 for the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo/SNES with Enix's Torneko no Daibouken, and is one of the most beloved RPG franchises in Japan.
This is an in-depth review with minimal story spoilers for Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. There have been a steady stream of Shiren releases over the past decade, but this recently released title is the first brand new adventure in the series in over a decade. While it includes some modern touches like expanded online features, stream-friendly display options and quality of life improvements, Shiren 6 is for the most part a return to its roots, a tough-as-nails, procedurally-generated dungeon crawling RPG that is unfair at times, but gives the player a great sense of accomplishment when they finally see success.
This is a review of the Japanese version, but the game has been localized in English and other languages.
Gameplay was captured on real hardware using the Elgato HD60 S+ and video/audio was edited using Davinci Resolve Studio 18.
All music tracks used in this video comes from the game featured, Fuurai no Shiren 6: Togurojima no Tankenroku. Great soundtrack!

#shirenthewanderer #風来のシレン6 #ImportGamingFTWWhat is Japans Video Game Ambassador? | The Most Influential Japanese Game of All TimeImport Gaming FTW2024-01-22 | Japanese game developers have contributed hundreds, thousands of important and influential video games over the decades that have helped shape gaming in their country and the world...for some people, "video games" is synonymous with "Japan." However, if you had to choose just one single title to best represent Japan's part in the history of video games, which one would you choose? I give my answer here, and in my opinion it's kind of a no-brainer...and maybe a little bit boring, but it's pretty hard to argue against.
This video could very easily be an hour long or more, but I was asked to keep it to around two minutes and to not go over three, since this video is a small part of a larger collaboration with @st1ka on YouTube with his "80 Games Around the World" video project. Man, he's so clever, why can't I think of cool ideas like that? Maybe I'll try to do some kind of video essay type video talking about Japan's most influential games or something...
A majority of gameplay was captured on real hardware using the Elgato HD60 S+ and video/audio was edited using Davinci Resolve Studio 18.
Music is from Gensou Suikoden II (Konami, PS1) and Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, Famicom).

#JapaneseCulture #VideoGameHistory #ImportGamingFTWEnder Lilies | A Modern Metroidvania Masterpiece | REVIEW (Switch, PS4, PC, XBOX)Import Gaming FTW2024-01-20 | REVIEW: Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is a fantastic exploration platformer, or "Metroidvania," from Japanese developers Adglobe and Live Wire and publisher Binary Haze Interactive. This is a full, in-depth and minimal story spoiler review of the game, which was originally released in 2021, but just got a physical release on Switch and PS4 courtesy of Clear River Games. It’s a solid dark fantasy side-scrolling action RPG that fans of classics like Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, or modern hits like Bloodstained and Hollow Knight should try out. It's a fun game, and while it doesn't have the depth of many similar titles, but I think it's a real work of art, a "modern Metroidvania masterpiece," if you will. And not just visually, but musically with its amazing soundtrack composed and performed by Japanese indie band Mili. (@ProjectMili)
Ender Lilies has been released digitally on the PC for Steam, Nintendo Switch, Sony PlayStation 4 and XBOX ONE and Series X/S, and physically on Switch and PS4, and includes many language options, so the game is very easy to pick up and play for fans around the world who love indie titles, action RPGs, dark fantasy, games from Japan or Metroidvania style adventures.
Since the publication of this review, a sequel to Ender Lilies was announced for modern platforms, Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist.

Music used in this video comes from the game Ender Lilies itself, composed and performed by Mili.

It's been nearly 20 years since Ganbare Goemon fans had a new game in Konami's legendary series...so how does this 2023 title, Mameda no Bakeru, stack up as a surrogate to the underrated and sorely missed Goemon series? Well, I completed the game to 100% and give my impressions in the following review, so check it out.
This is a full, minimal story spoiler review the game, full title "Otogi Katsugeki Mameda no Bakeru: Oracle Saitarou no Sainan/御伽活劇 豆狸のバケル ~オラクル祭太郎の祭難."
GoodFeel was founded by Etsunobu Ebisu, who directed many classic Ganbare Goemon titles, and its staff consists of many people who made those games happen. Myself and other fans have been saying for years that they would be the best developer to revive Goemon for Konami, so it's great to see them put out a game like this for the Nintendo Switch.
Enjoy this mostly spoiler-free review, but more importantly, I hope you enjoy the game...fingers crossed that it gets an English localization and international release soon!
Gameplay was captured on real hardware using the Elgato HD60 S+ and video/audio was edited using Davinci Resolve Studio 18.

#MamedaNoBakeru #GanbareGoemon #ImportGamingFTWTengai Makyou / Far East of Eden ZIRIA | The 1st Ever CD-ROM RPG | RETROSPECTIVE (PC Engine, 1989)Import Gaming FTW2023-10-08 | RETROSPECTIVE | Tengai Makyou ZIRIA is the first chapter in a long-running series of Japanese role-playing games that started on the PC Engine. It was developed by Hudson Soft and RED Company (now Red Entertainment). Tengai Makyou/Far East of Eden is one of the great JRPG series of the 1990s, one which was sadly left in Japan for the most part. The first title, ZIRIA, has an important place in the history of JRPGs, RPGs and gaming in general as it was the very first RPG developed for and published on a CD-ROM disc. It was the first RPG to explore the new possibilities that CDs opened up to gaming, including CD-quality music and voicework, anime-style cinematics and a huge amount of memory to work with.
This is the Tengai Makyou/Far East of Eden Retrospective Part 1: ZIRIA, all about the world's first RPG published on CD, one that you might have never played. One part documentary, one part review, this video explores how Hudson Soft and RED Company came together to make this legendary role-playing title for the PC Engine CD-ROM ROM System, its challenging development, the gameplay and story as well as the legacy of this game, the first entry in the Far East of Eden series.
In short, this groundbreaking title, released in 1989, paved the way for the more cinematic style of RPG that would rise to popularity in the 1990s by including voice acting and animated cutscenes unlike anything before it.
A special feature of this video is the inclusion of interview segments with Mr. Yoshiteru “Torajirou” Tsujino, series artist of Tengai Makyou and key member of the game's creative team at RED. He was gracious enough to allow me to speak with him and film an interview in 2022, providing his insight into the creation and development of ZIRIA back in the 1980s. His participation with this video was an integral part of why it was made, so I am extremely grateful for his time and input, and of course his work on the Tengai Makyou series.
Interview with Mr. Tsujino: youtu.be/5jM-Ftdihx8 Mr. Tsujino's YouTube Channel (Japanese): @user-yd9fn5vx2r
Special thanks also goes out to John the Happy Console Gamer for voicing an excerpt from an interview with Mr. Teruhisa Hiroi, more commonly known as Hiroi Ouji. A lifelong fan of the Tengai Makyou series, it was John who got me to finally talk about the games in video form in 2021, as well as pushed me into contacting Mr. Tsujino, so his involvement was also a key factor in the creation of this video.

Souseikishou VORG (創世紀章ヴォーグ) was a 16-bit real-time simulation game from Naxat that had a planned release date of March, 1995 in Japan that you probably have never heard of. What separates this from many other scrapped game titles, however, is that there's barely any information about the game online in English or Japanese, and as of 2022, no ROMs are available on the internet. It seems like it is a truly forgotten game.
I found some trailers for the game in a couple of rare "not for sale" Japanese VHS tapes that were intended to generate pre-orders of upcoming software releases. As far as I know, the footage in these tapes are not available publicly anywhere online. This PC Engine version also came out before Sweet Home, which makes it an even earlier example of the genre, though there is some debate on whether it qualifies as survival horror, as is the case with most old horror games not called Sweet Home, Resident Evil or Alone in the Dark.

Long before Elden Ring, Bloodbourne, Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, and even before Armored Core, Shadow Tower and Echo Night, From Software got its start with King's Field...it's basically the great grandfather of many of the company's popular games, and was quite a revolutionary title for 1994 and on console.
IGFTW Ep. 45 is a full review of this original, Japan exclusive KF, talking about gameplay, story and legacy. In retrospect, it was a humble begining, but King's Field paved the way for From Software to become one of the most beloved and critically game studios in the modern era.

Based on the movie of the same name (called Alien 2 in Japan), which is one of the great 80s sci-fi action movies, this is one of the few games made in the era based on the franchise, a rare game that was made for the budding microcomputer market in Japan at the time. Another Square-developed game was in the works for the Nintendo Disk System, but it was scrapped shortly before completion, though a prototype was leaked, which @RewindMike talks about in this video (Huge thanks to Mike for his help covering the unreleased Famicom Disk System port! Check out his channel and make sure to sub!)
IGFTW Ep. 43 is a review of these titles, Aliens for the MSX2 and Famicom Disk System!

Noobow the character is a cute yellow puffball that Morinaga used in Japan the 90s to sell their assortment of candies, ice creams and other delicious sweets. What happens when a candy company mascot gets its own portable video game? Magic, apparently.

#FamicomMini #ShonenJump #ImportGamingFTWDoctor Hauzer | The Dawn of True 3D Survival Horror...on 3DO? | REVIEW (3DO, 1994)Import Gaming FTW2018-05-02 | Doctor Hauzer is a 3D adventure title from 1994 on the 3DO from Panasonic and Riverhillsoft. While it takes a lot of influence from the classic 3D survival horror game Alone in the Dark, it has its place in the history of survival horror as the first fully 3D entry in the genre, since character models and backgrounds are fully polygonal and allowed multiple camera angles, 3rd person, top-down and even first-person. It was yet another title that paved the way for games like Resident Evil/Biohazard, and had a lot of influence on Riverhillsoft's future title Overblood. Regarding categorizing Doctor Hauzer as a survival horror title, there is some debate, but I consider it a part of the genre.
This review is episode 36 of Import Gaming FTW, which goes over the game's history, gameplay, story and more. Enjoy!
On a side note, as mentioned in the video, a fan-made English patch is available for Doctor Hauzer.
HUGE THANKS goes to the following two people in the making of this episode. First, to my boy, Andy Haden, the PC nerd behind the DOS-based gaming channel, Retro Island Gaming, since he helped me get footage for Alone in the Dark, and is just a beautiful man. Second, to Tiago Pereira dos Santa Silva, for his support on Patreon and requesting a video on this game, which if you'll believe it, I actually planned on covering just days before his request!
Gameplay was captured using the Elgato Game Capture HD, and video/audio was edited using Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite, Version 12.
Other games featured are Biohazard: Director's Cut Dual Shock Edition (Capcom, PS1) and Alone in the Dark (Infogrames, MS-DOS/PC).
All music used was taken from the games featured, with additional tracks used from Resident Evil (Capcom, PS1), Biohazard: revelations (Capcom, Switch), Alone in the Dark (Infogrames, MS-DOS), and Sweet Home (Capcom, Famicom).

#GanbareGoemon #がんばれゴエモン #ImportGamingFTWOH NO! | A Weird Running Game that I Think is Better Than Pepsiman | REVIEW (PS1, 2000)Import Gaming FTW2018-02-15 | REVIEW: OH NO is a 3D running game for the PlayStation developed by Asmik Ace in association with TBS, the Tokyo Broadcasting System, one of largest media and TV companies in Japan. It's a bizarre game filled with wacky scenarios and characters, narrated seriously and professionally by professional broadcaster Shiro Suzuki. It's an odd little hidden gem for the PS1, underrated and nearly unknown, and I think it's better than the cult classic Pepsiman.
IGFTW Ep. 18 is a review of this obscure 3D runner--enjoy!
As of the publication of this video, there are no English language patches available for Oh No.
A redone version of Import Gaming FTW episode 18, Oh No! (Weird Japanese PS1 Hidden Gem), originally uploaded on November 20th, 2014...my God, has it been that long? I was asked by DJ Slope to post something on his channel, and this is what I came up with...a George Lucas version of an older video. Sorry, but also thanks, Dan.
Gameplay was captured using the Elgato Game Capture HD, and video/audio was edited using Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite, Version 12. All music used was taken directly from the game, in addition to one track "帝国よ永遠に (Eternal Empire) taken from the game Gensou Suikoden, published by Konami.
Other games featured in this video are Biohazard: Revelations (Capcom, Xbox 360), Choaniki: Kyuukyoku Muteki Ginga no Saikyou Otoko (Masaya, Saturn), Gal Gun (Inti Creates, Xbox 360) PuLiRuLa (Taito/Xing, PS1), and Parappa the Rapper (Sony, PS1).

I look at the hard-to-find and rarely brought up PC port of Konami's classic RPG, which brings many unique changes to the game that, at the time, was only possible with the Power of the PC™.
HUGE THANKS to my friend Andrew from Retro Island Gaming for helping me get some shots of his PC game collection, that gorgeous shot of Kailua Beach, and for being an overall supportive guy and motivator for me to complete this video. Please take a look at this truly & criminally UNDERVIEWED videos at his YouTube channel. Really great stuff on JRPGs and PC games that need a bigger audience.

#Suikoden #幻想水滸伝 #ImportGamingFTWGensou Suikoden The Woven Web of a Century | Suikodens Last Chapter | REVIEW (PSP, 2012)Import Gaming FTW2017-07-13 | REVIEW: Gensou Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki, or "The Woven Web of a Century," is a Japan-exclusive PSP RPG from Konami that has the distinction of being the last title in the legendary role-playing series, Gensou Suikoden. Since this spin-off handheld from 2012 never saw an international release, not many people have played it compared to the other entries in the Suikoden series. It's a fine game, and like Tierkreis on the Nintendo DS, it's not set in the exact same world as the mainline Suikoden games but shares many similar features. Is it worthy of living up to the Suikoden name? Check out the review to find out.

Especially since Konami seems to have killed and buried this series like so many of its other legendary IPs...thanks to EGG Music Records for keeping Ganbare Goemon, as well as so many other classic and obscure video game series alive.
Not a paid video or anything, I'm just a huge fan of Ganbare Goemon and am so happy to see something like this find a release, especially in these "dark times" regarding Konami. Spread the word!
