Short Vertical Base loading Antenna frank wc0o 2021-11-25 | Deploying a 40 meter 1/4 wave antenna is a challenge. The radiating element would be about 33 feet high - that's high. I can barely reach 20 feet let alone 33. Sure, I can use an air gun with a fishing weight and fishing line to reach that height, but why care more equipment that might fail. One solution to shorting the radiating element is by creating a Short Vertical Base loading Antenna. Basically, you place a coil to shorten the antenna which compromises the antenna's performance. There are many considerations when building this antenna from the height of the coil to the length of the overall radiating element. JAWMount Deployment for CHA MPAS Lite frank wc0o 2021-11-17 | I used a JAWMount from CHA to deploy the CHA MPAS Lite on my fence. Originally I wanted to mount the antenna on my car using the jaw-mount, but that did not work out. So I decided to put the antenna on the fence. I was surprised to see that the SWR is very comparable to the deployment with the spike on the ground. In addition, I was using a 32.5 foot long counterpoise. I've noticed that I don't have to use the 60 foot long counterpoise that comes with the kit.
CHA MPAS Lite Shorter Counterpoise frank wc0o 2021-11-11 | I have been experimenting with the CHA MPAS Lite so that I can make it easier to deploy and not have it tuner. So far no luck in not needing a tuner, except when I set the antenna at my home! In this video, I want to shorten the counterpoise to have the size ~32.5 feet. The results are promising. CHA MPAS Lite Deployment SWR Graph frank wc0o 2021-10-26 | The CHA MPAS Lite has a wonderful footprint. Everything you need will fit in a 1 gallon plastic bag - except for the whip. Deploying is easy and very doable in most conditions. One of the advantages of the CHA MPAS Lite is the broad lower SRW for most of the higher HF bands. Starting at 20 meters. This video will explore the SWR graph after deploying the antenna. Of course there are many factors to take into consideration when watching this video. For example, the soil conductivity or the hight if any of the radial. As well as how many radials you deploy. Which comes to the one concern I have about the antenna is its 60 foot radial. Having a long radial could potentially trip someone walking by and damage the antenna - especially the whip. Although you can turn back the radial - watch the video for the antenna performance.
Performance CHA MPAS Lite with 22 inch Extension frank wc0o 2021-10-23 | This video shows what would happen if you used 6 radials of 16.4 feet with a 22 inch extension to the 17 foot vertical. Why do this? Maybe I can shift the SWR chart to the lower bands. Although, the transformer might correct this extension. Either way, Ham Radio is all about experimentation and to measure the data. Sure, it's only one data point and we can generalize the results, it might give someone else an idea on improving performance.
CHA MPAS Lite with 1/8 Wave Radials frank wc0o 2021-10-22 | What happens when you don't use the 60 foot long radial that comes with the CHA MPAS Lite and you use only 6 radials that are 16.4 feet long. Do you get a similar result? Why would you want to use shorter radials? Because 60 feet is very long and someone might trip on the line and drag your antenna down. 6 radials might give less loss resistance and thus possibly give a better performance.
HF 1/4 Wave Ground-Plane Antenna frank wc0o 2021-10-19 | I've been reading the ARRL handbook on vertical antennas. The vertical they discuss is the quarter wave antenna. Specifically, the quarter wave ground-plane antenna. I made it with some wire I had from a 40 meter dipole. All I needed was a BNC Banana Adapter, which I got at the less famous Ham Swap meet in Los Angeles - Claremont Swap Meet which occurs on the third Saturday at the Granite Creek Community Church. Items for sale are limited to Amateur Radio, electronics, communications, parts, and materials that can be used for such. The event is sponsored by the Claremont Amateur Radio Society. The adapter was only 1 dollar!These antennas are fun and easy to make and very inexpensive.

Yaesu FT5D vs FT3D Audio Performance frank wc0o 2021-09-17 | Is the FT5D audio really that better than the FT3D? Well we will find out in a un-scientific way! Drive my car and listen to it while driving.
