Guitar performance and guitar tab for, The Batman, by composer Michael Giacchino.
The Batman
The previous Batman franchise -- comprised of Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, and Hans Zimmer -- will be tough to follow in any sense. Given the redo of Justice League, even Ben Affleck was an excellent Dark Knight. However, I think we'll surprised at just 'how good' this new Batman will be.
The director, Matt Reeves, directed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes -- two of the best movies you will ever see. Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne) is an excellent actor. Check out a couple of his lesser known performances to see this man's range: The King (Netflix), and The Rover (Guy Pearce).
Already, Michael Giacchino's 'The Batman' theme sets the tone -- and is a worthy successor to Hans Zimmer's iconic two-chord motif

A friendly listener suggested Impromptu No. 1 from the soundtrack of Season 3. I had no idea the classically inspired music was from composer, Nicholas Britell. Impromptu No. 1 is a piano variation of Adagio in C Minor; the principle motif from the series. I split the difference for my guitar arrangement, combining elements from both. Fingerstyle guitar performance and guitar tab for Silent Night, by Evan Handyside. This arrangement is great for beginner guitarists.
I really love this understated arrangement of Silent Night. Everything is in the right place. Guitar doesn't have to be complicated to be beautiful. In fact, I would argue that simplicity in music is virtuous, and we should all be striving to play less notes.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Safe Return, by composer, Rob Simonsen, from The Whale (Original Motion Picture Score).
The Whale is a film directed by Darren Aronofsky, and stars Brendan Fraser as a reclusive English teacher, who tries to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.
Brendan Fraser is easy to like. His career is in a renaissance -- as he's reinvented himself into a serious actor. His performance in The Whale is something to behold. Rob Simonsen's score is monumental and incredibly dramatic given the small setting of the film. My favorite is the final piece, Safe Return.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for I'm With You (Always) by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. This song is from the film, Bones and All, directed by Luca Guadagnino.
I'm With You (Always)
Bones and All is a romantic/horror/road film directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name). The film tells the story of two young cannibals, falling in love, and fleeing together on a road trip across the US. The Bones and All soundtrack actually has Trent Reznor playing A LOT of nylon-string fingerstyle guitar. The main motif is titled, I'm With You - with a few variations through the score.
From what I can tell, Trent Reznor is playing a 7 string classical (yes there is such a thing). There's a low E, G, and D note - which is not even feasible with an alternate tuning. I had to create an arrangement for a 6 string guitar, but I still think it's on point.
This piece is the I'm With You (Always) variation, but I added some elements from I'm With You - which is far more sophisticated to play. I think most folks will enjoy this version - as it's much easier.
Learning right-hand fingerstyle technique with Gustavo Santaolalla's 'Did This Really Happen', from the film, 21 Grams.
I completely lifted my right-hand technique from composer, Gustavo Santaolalla. He effectively arpeggiates chord shapes by rolling through them with his fingers. This is a beautiful way to voice chords, and pretty easy to do with a little practice.
The best way to learn Gustavo Santaolalla's technique is with his minimalist piece, Did This Really Happen? This song is from the film, 21 Grams; a 2003 American drama film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant, Babel).
Fingerstyle guitar performance and guitar tab for the, 1883 Theme, by composer, Brian Tyler.
I've been obsessing over Taylor Sheridan's work since he wrote the screenplay for Sicario (2015). However, I'm only getting a chance to watch his 1883 series now -- and IT IS fantastic.
1883 is a prequel to Sheridan's Yellowstone series, and it tells the story of how the Duttons came to own the land that would become the Yellowstone Ranch. The American Civil War only ended years earlier in the timeline, and I'm blown away at how unsettled the American West was, only 139 years ago.
The music is from Yellowstone composer, Brian Tyler. This beautiful progression is used heavily throughout each episode. Whether it's 1883 or Yellowstone, Tyler's extraordinary music works seamlessly for the guitar.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Walking Home Alone, by composer Carter Burwell, from The Banshees of Inisherin.
The Banshees of Inisherin, is a 2022 black comedy written and directed by British-Irish playwright, Martin McDonagh. The film follows two lifelong friends (Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson) who find themselves at an impasse, when one abruptly ends their relationship. The predicament triggers alarming consequences for both.
The music is by famed Coen Brothers composer, Carter Burwell. He really has perfected the art of "unsentimental" music. Burwell moves beneath the story along with an ever-so-slight quirkiness to his melodies.
Walking Home Alone can be considered the main theme of The Banshees of Inisherin.
Fingerstyle guitar performance and guitar tab for the Yellowstone Theme by composer, Brian Tyler.
Yellowstone is a Paramount TV series written and directed by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Hell or High Water, Wind River). Kevin Costner plays John Dutton, a father trying to protect his ranch, the largest in the United States, from land developers, and a neighboring Indian reservation.
Taylor Sheridan is one of those writer/directors where I'm frequently checking his IMDb page. I can't get enough of his characters and backdrops.
I really love this opening theme and sequence. The music by composer, Brian Tyler, has a slight Spanish characteristic to it -- so I knew the chord progression would easily work on guitar. The music dips into some dissonant sounding chord shapes that I thought were very compelling. I'm excited to borrow those ideas for my own music.
Fingerstyle arrangement and guitar tab for Paul, by composer Volker Bertelmann, from the Netflix film, All Quiet on the Western Front.
All Quiet on the Western Front
This film has instantly become one of my all-time favorites. While based on a literary classic, All Quiet on the Western Front is not your "classic" war film. It has more in common with HBO's Chernobyl, than 1917. There is no hero's journey. The film immerses you into the gritty and hopeless nightmare (that was the German Western front) in WW1.
The movie is based on the book, Im Westen nichts Neues, by author Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of World War I. The book is a fictional accounting of the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental trauma during the war. It's an anti-war story that explores the total futility and desecration of warfare. An estimated 30 to 40-million copies of All Quiet on the Western Front have been sold since it was first published in 1929.
The book was so effective that Hitler had it discredited, burned, and banned. While author, Erich Remarque had used his literary success to move to America, his sister Elfriede Scholz, was viciously executed by the Nazis in 1943.
The latest film adaptation is beautifully shot in a wide, panoramic angle by director, Edward Berger. Amidst the violence, there are poignant scenes that brought me to tears. One in particular is the bomb crater scene -- where the principle character Paul, fighting for survival, mortally stabs a French soldier. The Frenchman's death is slow and excruciating. In a rush of humanity, Paul (Felix Kammerer) attempts to comfort the dying soldier. He becomes visibly shaken, and horrified that he extinguished the soul of this man; a husband, a father, a son.
The despair of trench warfare is expertly juxtaposed with scenes of elite opulence. Generals and politicians feasting -- while soldiers starve in the cold mud.
The musical score is by German composer, Volker Bertelmann. He is often a co-composer with Dustin O'Halloran. Some of my favorite soundtracks have been from their union: Lion, Ammonite, and A Christmas Carol.
Like the film itself, Volker's score for All Quiet on the Western Front should be in contention for awards season. It's one of the most unique soundtracks you'll ever hear, and it's pivotal to the film. There's an ominous, distorted 3 note motif -- made with an early 1900's harmonium. It's a mechanized and dystopian sound that signals the industry of war; of which Paul and his comrades are replaceable cogs.
The melancholy motif from All Quiet on the Western Front is titled Paul. I took this chord progression and expanded on it. Volker Bertelmann is in the post-classical space which is marked by minimalism. I tried to stay with that spirt and create a sparse fingerstyle arrangement. I drew a lot of inspiration from the bomb crater scene, as well as the music of Johann Johannsson.
Fingerstyle guitar performance and guitar tab for, The Haunting of Hill House (and The Haunting of Bly Manor).
I loved this Netflix series from writer/director Mike Flanagan. The music by The Newton Brothers almost acts like an additional character (or ghost). If you've seen the series, you'll agree the music and film are inextricably linked. This is also the title theme of The Haunting of Bly Manor.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Blood Theme, by composer Daniel Licht, from the Dexter original soundtrack.
Dexter was an excellent Showtime series (2006 - 2013) set in Miami. The series centered on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a forensic technician, who leads a secret parallel life as a vigilante serial killer. The Blood Theme, by composer Daniel Licht, is the central theme of the series. I always loved the eerie, lacerating violins in the verse.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Blood Oath, by composer Benjamin Wallfisch, from soundtrack of IT (2017).
Blood Oath
This is definitely my favorite piece from the 2017 IT score. I'm 45, so I remember when the book came out in the 80's:
Stephen King's IT (the book) was figuratively and literally biggest thing in 1986. I remember going Christmas shopping at the mall with my mom. We had two book stores at the mall: B. Dalton and Waldenbooks. Both had enormous IT displays. I remember the book looking HUGE with the infamous paper boat and a creepy lizard-like hand attached to a sewer grate. Oddly, nothing to indicate a clown whatsoever.
The 80's was punctuated by movies where young groups of friends overcame odds: ET, Goonies, Stand by Me (my favorite, also by Stephen King). Like Stranger Things, the latest new IT movie is a fond throwback to the culture of 1980's America. Much more than a creepy movie, IT has laughs and heart too.
Blood Oath is played toward the end of the movie, lending a tenuous resolution to The Losers Club frightening adventure. I absolutely adore this piece music.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Mane Theme, by composer Michael Giacchino. This piece is from, Werewolf by Night, on Disney+.
Werewolf by Night is the directorial debut film debut of (A-list composer) Michael Giacchino. It is a TON of fun. The "creature feature" is stylized in black & white with a run time of only 53 minutes. It's an old-time monster film with Marvel special effects. I loved every second of it. What an incredible first outing for Michael Giacchino?!?
Giacchino's score and sound editing is (as always) excellent. This piece is called 'Mane Theme'.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for John Carpenter's Halloween Theme. This arrangement is done in the style of Gustavo Santaolalla.
(This arrangement is available on Spotify and all streaming services. Links below.)
As evidenced by my YouTube channel, I'm a huge fan of multi-instrumentalist composer, Gustavo Santaolalla. His music is synonymous with the world. He seems to capture at once the sound of Latin America, as well as distant cultures from all continents.
For this interpretation of John Carpenter's Halloween theme -- I wanted to to reimagine it as a "world" sounding piece. Like something that might be played in The Last Of Us. To accomplish this, I looked no further than the unceasing fingerstyle of Gustavo Santaolalla.
Fingerstyle guitar performance and guitar tab for, Andor (Main Title Theme) by composer Nicholas Britell. Andor is a prequel series to Rogue One: a Star Wars Story.
I've only seen the 1st episode of Andor so far -- and it's unlike anything in Star Wars canon. Andor is a slow burn, clearly designed for adults. Don't expect The Mandalorian, this is more akin to Blade Runner. The actors are excellent, especially Diego Luna (Andor) who possesses a brooding, anti-hero charisma.
The title theme is by composer, Nicholas Britell (If Beal Street Could Talk). It turned out to be a nifty little progression on guitar.
Fingerstyle guitar performance and guitar tab for Go Tomorrow, by The Newton Brothers, from The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix).
[I've totally updated and reposted this piece from October 2018. It's a beautiful guitar arrangement. Hopefully I'm giving it new life by getting it back out there.]
The Haunting of Hill House is a legendary series on Netflix. It is supremely spooky. I'm 45 at the moment, and this series had me turning off the lights, and running up the basement steps. Everytime I turned my head, I thought I saw a figure in my peripheral vision.
The music by The Newton Brothers is spectacular in The Haunting of Hill House. There are 3 central themes that are played in different variations throughout the series. You get very used to the melodies — like another character in the series. This theme is also known as The End and it's additionally used in The Haunting of Bly Manor.
At the time (in October 2018) I thought the main title of the piece was The End. That's really the secondary title. This piece is officially, Go Tomorrow.
Fingerstyle guitar performance and guitar tab for The Quarantine Zone (20 Years Later) by composer, Gustavo Santaolalla, from The Last of Us original soundtrack.
The Quarantine Zone is the first song from the iconic The Last of Us soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla. This track embodies Santaolalla's creativity -- and his element of surprise. Quarantine Zone is gnarly, like a Radiohead song. The chorus section comes out of nowhere. It's relatively pretty by comparison -- but still devolves into despair.
I believe it's this "element of surprise" that really hooks people into Gustavo Santaolalla's music. This song excites me to be more challenging with my own writing as well.
Fingerstyle performance and guitar tab for, Misty Mountains, from 2012 film, The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey.
The Hobbit was directed by Peter Jackson, and the classic music is from composer Howard Shore. Misty Mountains was, naturally, sung by Dwarf Cast.
My family just started watching The Rings of Power. We're finding that -- to get all the references -- we need to backup and revisit The Lord of Rings series of films. I remembered that I especially liked the 3 'Hobbit films'. They never felt long or tedious. I just loved them from start to finish.
Misty Mountains was one of my first ever posts -- a full 10 years ago. I deleted that, re-arranged, and updated the entire piece and guitar tab.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for The Parting Glass.
'The Parting Glass' is a Scottish traditional song written in 1770. (However, evidence of this song has been found in manuscripts from the 1620s-1630's.This solo guitar arrangement is heavily inspired by the live a-capella versions of Loreena McKennitt and Hozier. I'm using the Loreena McKennitt key of D minor.

Fingerstyle performance and guitar TAB for, The Terminator, directed by James Cameron. Theme by composer, Brad Fiedel.
The Terminator
The original Terminator theme was written by 80's synthesizer composer, Brad Fiedel. Even though he composed a lot of movie scores through the 80's and early 90's, The Terminator theme was the defining work of his career. The best version of this theme song is Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
When I received my first guitar in 1991, at age 13, the Terminator theme was one of the first things I figured out how to play. Even then, melodies in film music were hitting a nerve with me.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for Naru's Way, by composer Sarah Schachner, from the film, Prey.
Prey, is an origin prequel to Predator, set 300 years ago in the world of the Comanche Nation, in 1719. The story follows Naru (Amber Midthunder) a skilled warrior, as she fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth.
This movie (available on Hulu) was flat out awesome. Absolutely entertaining from start to finish. A nice touch, is that the predator in this film, is slightly more primitive too. We get to see some wicked early weaponry -- and a new mask from the alien. Much like the new Top Gun -- Prey is even better film than the original Predator from 1987.
The music by composer, Sarah Schachner, is brilliant and almost comes off like "Hans Zimmer meets The Last of the Mohicans". It feels expansive -- just like the Northern Great Plains.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Farewell to Altamira, by guitarist Mark Knopfler. This piece is from the film, Finding Altamira.
I LOVE this piece from Mark Knopfler. Next to The Godfather theme ( youtu.be/AMk-KPD7TXk ) it's currently my most favorite thing to play. This piece is from the film Finding Altamira. The score is comprised of Knopfler -- deftly playing subtle, Spanish guitar lines on a steel string parlor guitar.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Munna Falling In Love With Shai, by guitarist/composer Gustavo Santaolalla. This song of from the film, Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries).
While I don’t know too much about this film — it was released internationally in 2011 as Mumbai Diaries. (At the time of this writing, it’s actually on Netflix.)
However, Dhobi Ghat is the one of the best Gustavo Santaolalla soundtracks that you, mostly likely, have never heard. I can’t believe I only discovered it recently. There are lots of pretty, singular guitar motifs. It’s very reminiscent of his work on the films, Brokeback Mountain and August: Osage County.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for Casadh an Tsúgáin. This version is based on that of Irish Sean-nós singer, Iarla Ó Lionáird.
Sean-nós "in the old way" singing is unaccompanied, traditional Irish vocal music -- usually performed in the Irish language. Of these singers, Iarla Ó Lionáird is definitely my favorite. His performances are emotive, and his intonation is masterful.
The song, Casadh an Tsúgáin "The Twisting of the Hayrope" is a whimsical story, told in the usual coy manner that characterizes many Irish folksongs (when approaching the subject of love). Boy meets girl -- then the boy visits her house -- only to be met by her rather protective mother. The mother cleverly asks him to unravel a hayrope. The young suitor complies, and as the hayrope lengthens -- he is once again outside the door whereupon the expedient mother summarily shuts it in his face.
My version of Casadh an Tsúgáin is specifically based off of Iarla Ó Lionáird's performance in the movie Brooklyn: youtu.be/hnsqpmav5HE There's some beautiful orchestration on the back end of that performance that I also tried to capture with my guitar.
I suppose I'm also channeling Hozier, as this turned out to be something like he'd play on guitar -- with his melodic, but distinctly Irish style.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, I'm Tired, by Labrinth, from the HBO series, Euphoria.
I'm Tired is the signature track from Euphoria (HBO) season 2. The music is from English musician, Labrinth, who scores the entire show. Labrinth (a singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer) is in Alt-hip hop space where musicality reigns supreme. I'm Tired is an incredible exposition of songwriting talent and skilled musicianship.
Ever since I heard this piece, I could hardly wait to run it through the filter of my guitar. Having immersed myself in the guitar style of composer Gustavo Santaolalla -- I use his minimalist approach on everything. This arrangement of I'm Tired took me about 20 minutes to complete. I was in a flow state the entire time, and I love the way it turned out.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for Lago Frias (and Medley), by composer Gustavo Santaolalla, from The Motorcycle Diaries motion picture soundtrack.
[Reposted from 2018. Updated 7/13/2022]
I often create medleys and musical derivatives that I personally want to hear. Lago Frias (The Motorcycle Diaries) has always been one of my favorite guitar riffs from composer Gustavo Santaolalla. But, it's only a riff.
With this arrangement, I've created a Motorcycle Diaries Medley beginning with Lago Frias and continuing with:
Partida del Leprosario,
La Partida,
and Leyendo en el Hospital.
Of course, all are from Gustavo Santaolalla's venerable Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack, which is one of his greatest musical achievements. The music is so good. You can easily use it to soundtrack your own road trip -- or just an evening glass of vino.

Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Bedside Hammer, by composer Michael Giacchino. This is the love theme from Thor: Love and Thunder.
I thought Bedside Hammer was a nifty little tune from Thor: Love and Thunder. The music is by composer, Michael Giacchino. The orchestral version of this motif is titled Bawl and Jane from the soundtrack. This would be considered the sentimental love theme from Thor: Love and Thunder.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for the Jurassic World theme by John Williams, and arranged by composer Michael Giacchino.
John Williams is an icon, and his 'Jurassic theme' is one of many modern classics by the long time composer. It's incredible how he has been pitch perfect for nearly 50 years of film making. My entire youth has been sound-tracked by John Williams; Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T. -- the list go on and on.
My favorite arrangement of the Jurassic theme is by composer Michael Giacchino (from Jurassic World). Giacchino riffed on it ever-so-slightly and was able to extend and embellish the best bits.
Fingerstyle guitar performance and guitar tab for, My Heart Will Go On, from the Titanic original motion picture soundtrack.
I recently heard a super minimal version of My Heart Will Go On played with two cellos. I believe the duo's name was literally 2CELLOS. It was beautiful and I wanted to create a subtle and minimal guitar version too.
Composer, James Horner, was such a tragic loss to film music. His wiki resume is unreal: Legends of the Fall, Braveheart, Titanic, A Beautiful Mind, Apocalypto, The Perfect Storm, The Devil's Own, Apollo 13, Glory, and so on. If you're around my age (mid-40's) James Horner sound-tracked many pivotal movies of your adolescence.
To me, Horner specialized in the "Celtic" motif. I love the way his music plays out on guitar. I incorporate little trills to mimic the Celtic whistles.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Fifty Fifty, by Gustavo Santaolalla, form the soundtrack of Narco: Mexico.
Although Gustavo Santaolalla is prolific, polymath musician and composer -- I prefer his film music the most. Within his soundtracks, Santaolalla delivers really clever, minimal guitar pieces. Of those scores, I prefer the darker, brooding, and avant-garde soundtracks like: The Motorcycle Diaries, Babel, and The Last of Us.
In that respect, Narcos: Mexico is the soundtrack that I had been waiting for. It's a glorious series and Gustavo Santaolalla adds a smooth, dark underpinning. Much like Amado Carrillo Fuentes character himself.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Running Up That Hill, by English singer/songwriter, Kate Bush. This song is featured in Stranger Things Season 4.
If you're right around my age (or older) you might fondly remember Kate Bush's 1985 hit, Running Up That Hill. I was in second grade when that came out. Like everything from the 80's -- it's a reminder of a far more optimistic and uncomplicated decade. That's really the genius of Netflix's Stranger Things. Their ongoing templet can reemerge the 80's, season after season, and we'll all love it, every time.
Kate Bush was known for her odd lyrical syncopation. I would characterize Bjork as a similar vocalist, who's unbound by convention. In terms of a fingerstyle guitar arrangement, this style turns a simple chord progression into something a little more complicated.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Pale Mourner, a song for guitar by Evan Handyside.
Pale Mourner
[This song is available on all streaming services, links below.]
'The light wraps you in its mortal flame. Abstracted pale mourner, standing that way against the old propellers of the twilight that revolves around you.'
Excerpt from The Light Wraps You - Pablo Neruda.
I draw a lot of musical inspiration from the poems of Pablo Neruda (1904 - 1973). He was a Chilean diplomat and politician who also happened to be one of the greatest love poets of all time. Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971.
Although it's not Pablo Neruda's intent -- when I read the excerpt above -- I immediately visualized a mourning angel. I'm a happy go-lucky guy. I'm not exactly sure why my personal music has such a brooding feel. Maybe it's a divining rod situation -- where I'm just channeling it from our collective environment.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for Livstraedrir, by John Lunn & Eivor, from the Netflix Original series, The Last Kingdom.
The Last Kingdom is a historical fiction (Netflix) series based on a series of novels entitled, The Saxon Stories by English author Bernard Cornwell. The television series is like early Game of Thrones; fast-paced storytelling, well developed character arcs, and replete with adult themes. Episode 1, season 1 literally covers an entire decade in 50 minutes. This series had been recommended to me by multiple friends -- and it is excellent.
Livstraedrir is may favorite motif from the series. It's really the 'love theme' used throughout the seasons. I put my own spin on it -- adding hammers, pulls, and trills where applicable.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for Prelude: The Atlas March by composers; Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, and Reinhold Heil. This is the central theme of the film, Cloud Atlas.
Prelude: The Atlas March was one of the first pieces of music that I ever posted - way back in 2012. While I've never seen the film, I still love the music, and it was time for a redo.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, The Survivor, by composer Hans Zimmer. This arrangement is based from the themes: Harry Haft and Walk to the Ring.
The Survivor (HBO Max) is about Harry Haft, a real-life survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp; a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps, operated by Nazi Germany, in occupied Poland during World War II and the Holocaust. In Auschwitz, Haft (Ben Foster) along with his fellow prisoners, was forced to participate in a dehumanizing gladiatorial boxing spectacle.
The Survivor, also chronicles Harry Haft's boxing career and personal life in the United States. Both of which were tortured by his PTSD and guilt from his Auschwitz survivorship. The story is ultimately about his healing process.
Ben Foster is in acting zenith. His performance as Harry Haft is incredible; the physical transformation, the accent. I was totally amazed from start to finish. The music by Hans Zimmer is minimally cut into the film, but the full soundtrack is excellent.
Left Behind (Together) is a nifty, steel-string guitar piece by Gustavo Santaolalla; from The Last of Us Volume 2. It's emblematic of his ability to find small spaces, and set positive constraints on the guitar. Gustavo Santaolalla picks low hanging fruit like no other guitarist/composer. Everytime I play one of his pieces, I'm blown away by the elegance of the left-hand movement.
Also, I'm having a continued renaissance in my recording technique. I'm allowing mic noise, and accidental room noises to enter and become a part of the recording. This lo-fi technique has been popularized in the post-classical movement of music, e.g., Dustin O'Halloran, and Stephan Moccio. The sound is much more personal -- like you're sitting in the room with me.
Left Behind (Together) Medley is an arrangement that includes The Path (A New Beginning) and Inextinguishable Flames. These songs are also from Gustavo Santaolalla's The Last of Us soundtracks.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Mary Goes to Jesus, by composer John Debney, from The Passion of the Christ motion picture soundtrack.
Mary Goes to Jesus is the most solemn and exquisite piece of music from The Passion of the Christ. It is also from the most poignant scene:
The Apostle John, takes Mary to a better vantage point to possibly see, touch, and speak with Jesus as he carries the 165lb cross through Jerusalem. Mary protectively runs to a stumbled Jesus, where he says to her, "See, mother, I make all things new." The scene is heart wrenching, as Jesus is momentarily distilled from Christ -- to Mary's child.
John Debney's score was nominated for an academy award in 2004.

Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Altamira, by Mark Knopfler, from the film, Finding Altamira (2016).
Altamira (Mark Knopfler & Evelyn Glennie) is the title track from, Finding Altamira: a 2016 film about a Spanish archaeologist (Antonio Banderas) and his daughter (Allegra Allen) who cause worldwide controversy in 1879 when they discover cave paintings that are 10,000 years old.
I've been a Mark Knopfler fan for as long as I can remember. He is truly one of the greatest living songwriters of all time. A world class guitarist -- who developed his own inimitable fingerstyle shorthand.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger, as performed by Jos Slovick, from the film, 1917.
The Wayfaring Stranger is a well-known American folk and gospel song that originating in the early 19th century. The song is about a plaintive soul on the journey of life. The most popular variation is from Johnny Cash. In my humble opinion, Jos Slovick's dark and Celtic version in 1917 is by far the best known performance. It may never be eclipsed.
1917 (directed by Sam Mendes) cannot be praised enough. The photography, cinematography, and action sequences are stunning. The performances throughout the film -- are some of the best ever. Specifically, Lieutenant Joseph Blake (Richard Madden) at the end of the film; he remains stoic -- while wrestling down his emotions over his deceased brother. An amazing piece of acting.

Fingerstyle guitar performance and guitar tab for, A Star Wars Medley. Music ARR: Evan Handyside. Music COMP: John Williams.
A Star Wars Medley:
This is a fingerstyle guitar medley of my favorite Star Wars motifs by John Williams. Luke's theme is played all throughout Luke's hero's journey. Most notably on his home planet of Tatooine. Leia's theme is usually represents her affections toward Luke, Han, Chewy -- and just about every rebel character. Solo's theme is really the "love theme" between Han and Leia.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for Only Ghosts, by Evan Handyside.
Only Ghosts
I wrote and recorded Only Ghosts in 2016. At that point, I was in the infancy of my sound design implementation. I'm still learning, but I'm much better at working my music software -- dialing in the right reverb, EQ, and mastering. Additionally, I wanted to update this piece with a little more heart and sentimentality.
I'm still massively inspired by The Haunting of Bly Manor score. That music (and series) allowed me to grasp that Only Ghosts is actually a gothic love song. I think of instrumental music in terms of an unspecific journey -- designed to elicit an emotional narrative. I added a section an end section to Only Ghosts which better resolves the song's story.
The sound editing for this latest iteration of Only Ghosts is decidedly Lo-fi: an imperfect production quality that brings you closer to the guitar. You'll hear the hiss of mic gain with the highs and lows filtered out. I'm obsessed with getting Lo-fi editing right. I love the intimate sound that composer's Stephan Moccio and Dustin O'Halloran get with their piano performances. You can even hear the pressing of the keys.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Fireflies, by composer/pianist Stephan Moccio, from his 2021 album, Lionheart.
Fireflies is by pianist/composer Stephan Moccio, from his 2021 album, Lionheart. Stephan Moccio is one of my recent finds on Spotify. He's an Italian/Canadian composer. I love his work. You'll want to think of him in terms of the post-classical space like: Dustin O'Halloran, Johann Johannsson, and Max Richter.
I love the production on Fireflies -- where you can here the mic gain and the pressing of the keys -- as though you're sitting right beside the piano. This is an en vogue form of production in the post-classical space. I'm trying to figure out how to do it for my own recordings.
Additionally, Fireflies is glorious example of minimalism in music. Just one simple chord progression and melody. I'd be curious if he actually wrote this for a film and it went unused.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for Apertura, by composer Gustavo Santaolalla, from the soundtrack of, The Motorcycle Diaries.
Apertura
Apertura is the opening song of Walter Salles' The Motorcycle Diaries -- a 2004 biopic about a then 23-year-old Ernesto Guevara, who would years later become internationally known as Che Guevara. The film recounts the 1952 expedition by Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado across South America. Their formative odyssey is initially on the back of a single, sputtering 1939 Norton 500cc motorcycle dubbed, La Poderosa (The Mighty One). The Motorcycle Diaries is based on the memoir (of the same name) by Ernesto Guevara.
The film is a coming-of-age road journey -- akin to Easy Rider and On the Road. It's not as political as you'd think, given the author. Into the Wild is another comparable adventure.
The Motorcycle Diaries has stunning cinematography and images of South America. The soundtrack is by far Gustavo Santaolalla’s best. It’s the greatest road-trip music you could ever listen to.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, The Imitation Game, by composer, Alexandre Desplat.
The Imitation Game is a 2014 British historical drama based on the 1983 biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing, who decrypted Nazi intelligence messages for the British government during World War II.
This is an incredible WW2 drama -- actually, one of the best historical WW2 films ever made. There's some compelling subplots too:
˜ Having broken the Nazi Enigma code, British intelligence had to judiciously use the data -- so as not alert the Nazis that their code had been broken. Basically, they had slowly bend the arc of the war in their favor. This meant the unenviable task of picking winners and losers -- often putting Allied forces in harm's way.
˜ Alan Turing -- a hero, whose genius likely saved an incalculable amount of lives -- was a victim of mid-century norms and social law. He was a closeted homosexual, and was charged in 1952 with "acts of gross indecency". Turning was forced to undergo chemical castration as an alternative to prison. He later committed suicide in 1954.
The Imitation Game's music and central theme, by composer Alexandre Desplat, are now considered a modern classic. At the time of this writing, this theme has 52 million plays on Spotify alone. Incredibly high for a film music composition.
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, The Godfather (Love Theme) by composer Nino Rota.
The Godfather
I'm currently 44, and just finally watched The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. If you're a young person and haven't seen these films, you must prioritize them straight away. They're total perfection in script, cinematography, and acting. You'll be glued to the screen -- only occasionally opening your phone to IMDb what you're seeing.
[Pro tip: if you watch on Amazon Prime -- simply pausing the film on any given scene will bring up the actor's names at the bottom of your screen.]
While it's consensus that Part II is an even better film, I'm still fixated on the 1st installment. The arc of Michael Corleone -- a doe-eyed WWII hero -- into the heir of "Godfather", is incredible to watch. Al Pacino's eyes slowly dim and his voice deepens throughout the film. This culminates in the final "baptism scene" where his soul is completely iced over. Again, most of his acting is done with his glare. I've never seen anything like it.
Part II's most compelling story line is the fleshing out of Vito Corleone -- played to perfection by a young Robert De Niro. Even Marlon Brando's (older) Vito is kind of a good guy. He has prudence, and generally wants to do right by the people in his orbit. As we see with the young Vito -- the role of "Godfather" was given to him by circumstance. He only became brutal to overcome the brutality of others.
Instrumental guitar performance and guitar tab for, 'This House Is...' by Jarvis Cocker & Gustavo Santaolalla. This is the final piece from The House (Netflix); a dark stop-animation feature.
The House
"Then the right set of dishes. Then the perfect bed. The drapes. The rug. Then you're trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own, now they own you.” ― Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club
I highly recommend The House on Netflix. In general, stop-animation is incredibly engaging -- with a weirdness and authenticity that's impossible to look away from. The House couples this with excellent writing and a creeping dread. This film is an easy watch -- and you won't be checking your phone.
The Fight Club metaphor is in full swing here. 'The House' has an obvious and universal message that should be revisited by our society: we're all sucked in and driven by unbridled consumerism, and our priorities are backwards. The film is not preachy in the least bit, but it's incredibly thoughtful.
The music is by Gustavo Santaolalla, with the final song being sung by Jarvis Cocker from the British rock band, Pulp.
[This is Hardcore (Pulp) is one of my most treasured albums. Jarvis and Santaolalla teaming up on the same same tune?!?! I'm sold. Take money now.]
Guitar performance and guitar tab for, 'a love unreturned', by Evan Handyside
'a love unreturned'
When I write music, put my hands on the guitar to see what happens. After I get two or three notes, I execute what I hear in my head, and follow that thread until completion.
It's hard for me to get away from Gustavo Santaolalla's sound, as his style informs all of my playing at this point. However, my main influence for 'a love unreturned' was the work of composer, Abel Korzeniowski; a Polish composer of theater and film scores.
Korzeniowski most famously composed the music for Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals. In my opinion, he should have been nominated for an Academy Award in 2016 for that score. The music totally drives the final scene of that movie.
