Fay and Dan Explore 2025-06-21 | Join us for our new vlog, First Impressions of the amazing country of India, beginning with two days exploring first New Delhi, and then Old Delhi.

Stepping out on to the street was like stepping into a very different universe compared to the UK. Dust flying and horns tooting, 3 to 4 lanes of traffic trying to fit into a narrow street. Tuk-tuks, motorbikes, hand pushed carts, rickshaws, cars, the odd cow and people on foot. And the journey was just beginning.

In New Delhi, we visit India Gate, the Lotus Temple, Ugrasen ki Baoli, ending our day in Connaught Place.

Our second day was spent visiting Old Delhi, exploring Chandni Chowk by Cycle Rickshaw, the Khari Baoli Spice Market, famous for selling wholesale spices, herbs, and nuts, the stunning Jama Masjid Mosque, and Lodi Gardens, all in a single day.

Rahul, our Tuk Tuk driver, and his Uncle Ashok made our day absolutely amazing, looking after us all the way, and we'd thoroughly recommend Rahul if you're visiting Delhi.

Fay - Stepping out into the street was like stepping into a very different universe. Dust flying and horns beeping, 3-4 lanes of traffic trying to fit into a narrow street. Tuk-tuks, motorbikes, hand pushed carts, rickshaws, cars, the odd cow and people on foot.

Fay - Heading to a very misty India gate I was surprised to see it set in such beautiful gardens, with reflection ponds and fountains.

Fay - What bought it to life though were the people. I felt like a pop star giving some skin to a whole class of school children.

Dan - India Gate formally known as "All India war memorial" stands as a memorial to the 84,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who died in the First World War.

Dan - 13,313 names are engraved; access to read them is restricted but they can be viewed on the commonwealth war graves commission website.

Dan - Subhas Chandra Bose was an Indian revolutionary prominent in the independence movement against British rule of India.

Dan - The lotus temple dedicated in 1986, is an amazing building made up of 27 free standing marble clad petals and can accommodate 1300 people within its 34 metre main hall, it has won numerous architectural awards and it’s not hard to see why.

Dan - Agrasen Ki Baoli is a 60 metre long and 15 metre wide step well, probably rebuilt in the 1400’s. This Baoli with 108 steps is among a few of its kind in Delhi.

Fay - As well as appearing in some Bollywood classics there are also urban legends of it being haunted

Fay - We decided to would try out the subway, which worked very efficiently with airport type security and modern trains our one stop trip only cost us 10 pence each

Fay - Connaught place these days known as Rajiv Chowk is one of the main financial, commercial and business centres in New Delhi. Modelled after the Royal Crescent in Bath pre-independance, the British kept the area for themselves so it is heartening to see its such a fun and lively place today, full of people enjoying and evening walk, meal or ice cream.

Join us for our seventh day in India, exploring the Amber Fort located in Amer, Rajasthan, India. Built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh I, it’s renowned for its artistic Hindu style elements. The fort is constructed of red sandstone and marble and is laid out on four levels, each with a courtyard. It includes the Diwan-e-Aam, or “Hall of Public Audience,” the Diwan-e-Khas, or “Hall of Private Audience,” the Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace), and the Sukh Niwas where a cool climate is artificially created by winds that blow over a water cascade within the palace.

Later, we explore the Jal Mahal, meaning “Water Palace,” a serene palace located in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Originally constructed around 1699, it was later renovated and enlarged by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber in the 18th century. The palace is a five-storied building made of local sandstone, with the top story visible above the water level when the lake is full.

Finally, we explore the Bapu Bazar, a traditional market in the heart of Jaipur city, offering a variety of products from Rajasthan, such as footwear, jewellery, clothing, quilts and handicrafts.

Dan - Amber Fort is a fort in Amer, Rajasthan, India, located approximately 11 kilometres from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan.

Fay - High up on a hill, with all of it's walls and battlements it looks very impressive and its no surprise it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fay - I really enjoyed the walk up to the fort. It was a beautiful sunny day with perfect temperatures.
The walk up was a fantastic experience on its own, with people selling their wares, musicians, lumbering elephants and fellow tourists.

Dan - The fort has many courtyards, for military and public gatherings and proceeding, depending on the hierarchy of the visitor, to private audiences.

Dan - Amber fort is great example of Rajput and Mughal architecture, constructed of red sandstone and marble, the attractive, opulent palace is laid out on four levels, each with a courtyard.

Fay - The palace was the residence of the Royal family. Raja Man Singh had twelve Queens, so he made twelve rooms, one for each Queen. Each room had a staircase connected to the King’s room.

Dan - Jaigarh and Amber Fort are considered one complex, as the two are connected by a subterranean passage. This passage was meant as an escape route in times of war.

Dan - The third courtyard is where the private quarters of the Maharaja, his family and attendants were located.
The courtyard has two buildings, one opposite to the other, separated by a garden laid in the fashion of the Mughal Gardens.

Fay - Imagine the mirror palace in use each evening lit up in mesmerising candlelight.

Fay - The fort’s strategic position offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Dan - We got more than we bargained for on the journey home with our Tuk Tuk driver driving on the wrong side of the road!

Fay - Bapu bazaar is quite mesmerising at night all lit up with fairy lights.

Bedrooms are quiet and comfortable, offering coffee making facilities, welcome water, flat screen TV, and en-suite shower room. Rana, the manager, was always friendly and available to help, whatever you need. We highly recommend this hotel as a good value, hospitable and comfortable hotel.

Fay - During our time in Jaipur, the Pink City and the capital of Rajasthan; just a short walk from the Hawa Mahal and City Palace, we stayed at the Jaipur Hotel New - A Heritage Hotel.

Dan - The hotel, under the management of the excellent Rana, offers 24 hour front desk, roof top bar, room service, sauna and an on-site restaurant, with an elevator to all floors. The entrance way is traditional, with a lovely airy feeling welcoming you back after a day exploring Jaipur.

Fay - Rooms were very clean, and include a comfortable bed, air conditioning as well as a ceiling fan, TV, good WiFi, coffee and tea making facilities, and a spotless bathroom with either bath or shower.

Dan - The Rooftop Bar area is a lovely place to relax and enjoy the view during the evening.

Fay - Completing the Golden Triangle, we find ourselves in Jaipur, the Capital of Rajasthan and tenth most populated city in India.

Fay - The street life is lively and vibrant, delightful one moment and heart wrenching the next. Bustling with humanity going about their business.

Fay - The streets have a hustle and quality all of their own, and you feel it more keenly in the old town as its tempting to walk, and the traffic can feel insurmountable when trying to cross the road.

Dan - The Hawa Mahal is a Palace built in 1799 from red and pink sandstone. The five-floor exterior is akin to a honeycomb with its 953 small windows called Jharokhas decorated with intricate latticework.

Dan - The enclosed courtyard offers sanctuary and shade from the busy streets outside. What we consider to be the front of the palace, the famous 5 story honeycomb with lattice work is in fact the back.
The original intent of the lattice design was to allow Royal ladies to observe everyday life and festivals celebrated in the street below without being seen. This architectural feature also allowed cool air from the Venturi effect to pass through, thus making the whole area more pleasant especially during the summer.

Fay - We explored following a maze of ramps and slopes that took us to the upper levels of the palace.

Fay - Beautifully decorated with coloured glass, mirrors and arches, with balconies over looking the court yard, it's easy to imagine the lively former life of the palace.

Dan - It's well worth the climb and cover charge to try and secure a seat outside on the balcony and enjoy the mesmerising view of the simply stunning Hawa Mahal.

Fay - We walked round the corner to find the City Palace and took in some amazing street life on the way.

Fay - Known for its elaborate gates, we entered the City Palace complex via an enormous golden gate.

Dan - The City Palace is a royal residence and former administrative headquarters of the rulers of the Jaipur State. Construction started soon after the establishment of the city of Jaipur when the Royal family moved from the Amber Fort to Jaipur and remained the capital of the kingdom until 1949, when it became the capital of the present-day Indian state of Rajasthan.

Fay - The construction of the Palace was completed in 1732 and it was also the location of religious and cultural events, as well as a patron of arts, commerce, and industry. It was constructed combining elements of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles.

Fay - It now houses a Museum, and continues to be the home of the Jaipur Royal family. The Royal family have around 500 personal servants. The Palace complex has several buildings, various courtyards, galleries, restaurants, and offices.

India 🇮🇳 | Day 5 | Driving by car from Agra to Jaipur 🚗

Fay and Dan Explore 2024-03-08 | Join us for our fifth day in India, Boxing Day, when we discover our train has been cancelled and have to book a last minute car to Jaipur. 4.5 hours on the road rather than 3 hours by train!

Fay - Up early to catch a quieter start, the walk-in felt surreal on a foggy Christmas morning. We even spotted a Tuk-Tuk driven by Santa!

Dan - The full extent of the fog only became apparent inside the complex and we realised for many the pilgrimage would be in vain.

Fay - A foggy day hits differently in December, it showed no signs of lifting and was surprisingly cold.

Dan - The inside of the Taj Mahal has the octagonal tomb chamber in the centre.

Fay - The exquisite octagonal marble lattice screen encircling both tombs is highly polished and richly decorated with inlay work. The borders of the frames are inlaid with precious stones in the shape of flowers that catch the suns rays and glow in rich hues surrounded by white marble.

Fay - As with every place we have visited in India so far, people watching is as rewarding as any monument and I have always left wishing to stay and chat some more.

Dan - If the queue is out on the street, keep to the right of the line and keep walking till you find the end of the premium ticket line which will become apparent as you get closer.

Dan - The Taj Mahal is an immense mausoleum of white marble, built in Agra between 1631 and 1648 by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal

Fay - Taj Mahal gains its beautiful perspective by being placed at one end of the gardens rather then in its centre.

Fay - The mausoleum is also raised on a square platform with the minarets extended beyond the square at the corners.

Dan - The Taj Mahal is the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of world heritage.

Fay - The outer courtyard and its cloisters were added subsequently and completed in 1653 AD.

Fay - Located on the right bank of the Yamuna River in a vast Mughal garden that encompasses nearly 17 hectares.

Dan - For its construction, stone-cutters, inlayers, carvers, painters, calligraphers and other artisans were requisitioned from the whole of the empire.

Fay - We returned to our hotel for Christmas dinner on the roof and were surprised by an impromptu music lesson and puppet show!

Dan - The puppets in Rajasthan are one of the well-known sources of amusement in the state. The art of puppetry is practiced by a society of agricultural laborers of Rajasthan. Known as the Bhats,

Fay - We found the puppet show amusing and charming. I bought a homemade puppet to bring home which is a wonderful souvenir!

India 🇮🇳 | Review of Hotel Taj Resorts - AGRA | Superb ★★★★

Fay and Dan Explore 2024-02-23 | Here is our review of Hotel Taj Resorts, a brilliant good value 4 star hotel, located just 850m from the Taj Mahal Eastern Gate. The bedrooms are quiet and comfortable, offering coffee making facilities, a fridge and welcome water, a safe and flat screen TV, with a luxurious en-suite shower room. Nothing was too much trouble from making us a Christmas dinner to arranging a very last minute car to Jaipur. We highly recommend it as a good value, hospitable and comfortable hotel.

Fay - We really enjoyed staying at the Taj Resorts. They offer a warm and friendly welcome and it's right on the door step of the Taj Mahal.

Fay - Set within a pedestrian only area you can easily walk to the main attraction.

Fay - It's gated with its own driveway, and taxis are allowed into the pedestrian area for drop offs.

Fay - Nothing was too much trouble from making us a Christmas dinner to arranging a last minute car to Jaipur.

Fay - The bedrooms are quiet and comfortable offering coffee making facilities, a fridge and welcome water, a safe and flat screen TV with a luxurious en-suite shower room.

Fay - The rooftop was a real highlight ,with a pool, views of the Taj and a lovely international restaurant with live music and candlelight dining.

Fay - We highly recommend it as a good value, hospitable and comfortable hotel.

India 🇮🇳 | Day 3 | Train CC Class - Delhi to Agra, plus Agra Fort! 🚃🚃🚃

Fay and Dan Explore 2024-02-16 | Join us for our third day in India, when we take the Gatimann Express Train (12050) from Delhi Hazrat Nizamuddin station to Agra Cantt station, travelling in CC class. Having arrived in Agra, we then make our way to Agra Fort, where we spend the afternoon of Christmas Eve, the 24th December 2023.

Fay - We got up early to take the train from Delhi to Agra, arriving in darkness to a commotion of humanity and a huge staircase up to the platforms.
Porters vied to carry our luggage, informing us it was forbidden for us to carry our bags up. An untruth of convenience of course. We gathered our strength and launched ourselves up.
The crowd eased as we progressed though the station via security and onto the platform

Fay - On reflection I would struggle to recommend using the Indian style toilet on a moving train, it was certainly an experience!

Dan - My advice in hindsight for arriving at Agra train station is to grab the first decent looking offer of a taxi and just go with it.

Dan - I enjoyed the pedestrian area our hotel was located in, full of shops and street life, you had to walk to an entrance point to find a Tuk-Tuk, drivers were waiting for customers.

Fay - We took an ill fated Tuk-Tuk to Agra fort in the midst of bank holiday traffic, the air was so thick with exhaust fumes I found myself longing to escape the mayhem.

Dan - The security guy at Agra fort was strict and so disappointed shaking his head at each food discovery, tutting and sighing "oh madam!". We were sent to lockers to store our disgrace and in the process also had our microphones confiscated.

Fay - Agra fort offered a beautiful and calm oasis after all the chaos.

Dan - The present day structure was completed in 1573. It served as the main residence of the rulers of the Mughal dynasty until 1638, when the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi.
The Agra fort was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its importance during the Mughal Dynasty.

Fay - The intricate detail on all the stone work and marble is amazing.

Fay - The fort has witnessed a turbulent history with coronations, battles, many new rulers and royal imprisonment

Fay - Shah Jahan who had the Taj Mahal built also added marble palaces to the red fort with many mirrors to capture the sun or moon light.

Fay - It's heartening to know his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal lived within these walls during their 19 year marriage and maybe that is why he built the Taj Mahal out of marble in her memory.

Fay - Seven of their offspring survived so it is fair to assume these walls once rung with love and laughter.

Fay - An experience like no other, hanging on and whizzing through the mesmerising sights and sounds of Chandni Chowk.

Fay - People stared and smiled, shouting "Welcome to India"! As we tried to take it all in, and duck as needed to avoid the dangling snake like power lines winding along the street, looking more like an art installation.

Fay - We followed our Guide on foot, through the Spice Market, many curious eyes following our route. A smile or wave was almost universally met with joyful smiles as if a gift had been given, when in truth it was received

Dan - After a transfer to a brother's Rickshaw, we continued our tour.

Dan - Mirza Ghalib is a famous poet of the Mughal era. His museum is housed in what remains of his old Delhi home. Most celebrated after his death, he lived a life of hardship and poverty, tragically all 7 of his offspring died in infancy.

Fay - “All your life o Ghalib you repeated the same mistake
Your face was dirty, but you kept obsessively cleaning the mirror!”

Dan - Our first sighting of monkeys in India chilling above our heads - stay tuned for more monkeys later!

Dan - Built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656,
the Jama Masjid was regarded as a symbolic gesture of Islamic power across India well into the Colonial Era.

Dan - The mosque is accessed by three sandstone gates. The most prominent being the 3 story high Eastern gate.

Fay - A gathering place for religious and political discourse, debate and uprising, the mosque holds a significant place in old Delhi’s history.

Dan - Lodi gardens is a city park in South Delhi, spread over 90 acres, and houses a number of ancient tombs dating back to the Sayyid Lodi and Mughal Dynasties in the 1400s.

Fay - Christmas was fast approaching and it had never felt so weird or surreal as it did in India.

Fay - Lodhi art district is India’s first art district, with murals by 50 Indian and international artists. I love to see street Art so it was a real treat to be shown this amazing area.

Dan - I asked Rahul our Tuk Tuk driver to take us to a well known monkey street in Delhi. It was a wonderful end to the day seeing all the monkeys feeding and playing especially the babies. Jungle lays behind the walls where the monkeys live.

India 🇮🇳 | Review of The Prime Delhi Hotel - New Delhi | Superb ★★★★

Fay and Dan Explore 2024-01-26 | Here is our review of The Prime Delhi Hotel, a brilliant good value 4 star hotel, located in the centre of New Delhi. The room was a good size, comfortable bed, and perfectly clean. The staff could not have been more helpful throughout, and you felt that they genuinely wished you a great experience. The Prime Delhi offers a calm and quiet oasis, on the doorstep of all that Delhi has to offer.
Complementary afternoon tea is brought to the rooms, consisting of biscuits, cakes, coffee and tea, which is a lovely gesture.
The road outside is busy, but this is Delhi after all! It's a great lively street with many passing tuk-tuks, which is a real help.
If we visit Delhi again, will we stay at the Prime Delhi? I'm absolutely certain of it.

Fay - Heading to a very misty India gate I was surprised to see it set in such beautiful gardens, with reflection ponds and fountains.

Fay - What bought it to life though were the people. I felt like a pop star giving some skin to a whole class of school children.

Dan - India Gate formally known as "All India war memorial" stands as a memorial to the 84,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who died in the First World War.

Dan - 13,313 names are engraved; access to read them is restricted but they can be viewed on the commonwealth war graves commission website.

Dan - Subhas Chandra Bose was an Indian revolutionary prominent in the independence movement against British rule of India.

Dan - The lotus temple dedicated in 1986, is an amazing building made up of 27 free standing marble clad petals and can accommodate 1300 people within its 34 metre main hall, it has won numerous architectural awards and it’s not hard to see why.

Dan - Agrasen Ki Baoli is a 60 metre long and 15 metre wide step well, probably rebuilt in the 1400’s. This Baoli with 108 steps is among a few of its kind in Delhi.

Fay - As well as appearing in some Bollywood classics there are also urban legends of it being haunted

Fay - We decided to would try out the subway, which worked very efficiently with airport type security and modern trains our one stop trip only cost us 10 pence each

Fay - Connaught place these days known as Rajiv Chowk is one of the main financial, commercial and business centres in New Delhi. Modelled after the Royal Crescent in Bath pre-independance, the British kept the area for themselves so it is heartening to see its such a fun and lively place today, full of people enjoying and evening walk, meal or ice cream.

Once upon a time in a kingdom for away, there lived a King and Queen who had a beautiful daughter: Aurora.
They invited all the good fairies of the realm to be Godmothers to the baby princess.
One fairy was accidentally overlooked and arrived in a rage waving her wand in anger and delivered a curse, not a blessing.
Aurora: she declared. On your 16th birthday, you will prick your finger on a spindle and die!!

One fairy had not yet used her blessing for the princess so she stepped forward to say I cannot undo this dreadful curse but I can soften it. The Princess will not die, but sleep for one hundred years, only to be woken by true loves kiss.

The King and Queen were determined to save their precious Aurora and collected every spinning wheel in the entire kingdom to be burnt.

Aurora's long awaited 16th Birthday arrives, there is joy throughout the Kingdom, with cakes and flowers and guests in every room.

Aurora explores the castle towers to escape the commotion and discovers an old spinning wheel, long forgotten. She pricks her finger and collapses.

The Lilac Fairy appears and reminds the distraught King and Queen that all is not lost – Aurora is but sleeping. She waves her wand and puts a spell over the entire Kingdom, so when Aurora awakes she will not be alone, and no one will have to endure the pain of her absence.

Word travels and an eligible Prince sets out on a long journey to find the fabled Princess. The Lilac Fairy stays close by.

The Prince arrives and cuts his way through the thorny vines surrounding the palace, with a flick of her wand they become flowers and the path is easier to clear.

He discovers the sleeping Aurora laid in her bed and bends to kiss her.
The spell is broken in that instant and Aurora wakes up along with every living creature in the palace

The Prince and Aurora dance together, her Birthday party is in full swing, as if they never left it. And the whole Kingdom celebrates!

We then explored the beautiful Christmas Market, full of treats and gifts for the festive season.

The Blenheim Illuminations this year are quite the experience. They really capture the Christmas spirit.

The Water Terrace was a rainbow of shimmering lights that made us pause in wonder.

The illuminated trees were a favourite, especially the pink ones.

Churchill's garden was very atmospheric lit up in glowing flames.

The Rose garden had the most amazing light display it was quite mesmerising.

We emerged into a giant flower garden with roses towering over us.

The star tunnel was a stunning ever changing tunnel of light, it felt quite magical and we lingered to see all the colours shimmer though.

Turning the corner we were amazed to see a full on water and light display with the backdrop of the cascade falls.

The halfway point was especially lovely this year, with benches and a lit up canopy to sit under. Warm drinks and spirits were available with a crepe bar too and we very much enjoyed our marsh mellows and lingered round the fire pit to warm up.

For the romantics there is a Tunnel of pink love hearts which would surely be a great spot to propose.

I loved the themed areas from New years full of clocks to a flurry of letters heading to Santa's post office and the myriad of lights from floating candles to lanterns and strings of light nestled in the grass.

Santa was on hand to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and was happy to take photos with his fans.

The grand finale is a massive tunnel of lights to dance and play in as well as being the perfect selfie spot.

We left pretty much convinced it was Christmas Eve and anticipating gifts under our tree in the morning!

Fay - Just across a scenic, pedestrian friendly bridge from downtown Seville, Triana is a perfect area to stay, with all the shops and street life you could wish for, but quiet at night when you need to rest.

Dan - The Santa Ana church is the most famous in the district. According to legend, babies christened here with be blessed with a good voice for Flamenco!

Fay - Famous for raising bull fighters and Flamenco dancers, the area is also well known for its beautiful tiles and pottery.

Dan - With craft and jewellery stalls nearby, it’s pretty under the Triana bridge by the river.

Fay - The Mercado de Triana is a daily fresh market that’s well worth a visit for its rich and varied selection of fruit, vegetables, meat, herbs and fish.

Dan - The Seville Tower is an office skyscraper that was completed in 2015.

Fay - The tower is 180 metres tall and has 40 floors, offering amazing panoramic views over Seville.

Fay - The Real Alcazar is a real highlight to any visit to Seville.

Fay - We booked ahead to secure a slot and avoid the long lines at the ticket booth on arrival. Early is best to catch a cooler morning and quieter visit.

The palace can be found right in the centre of Seville's Old Quarter, behind the cathedral.

Fay - Eleven centuries old, it has functioned as an administration building and political hub as well as a Royal Court with poets and entertainment.

Built up layer on layer over the centuries in the style of its guardians with Roman, Arabic and Mediterranean influences.

Dan - The palace has been built and modified especially during the Renaissance period with sweeping arches and cool interiors lined with stone, marble and tile and breathtakingly ornate ceilings.

The palace grounds and buildings extended down as far as the river and water was used within the grounds and palace to cool and refresh its occupants some evidence of this can still be seen to this day.

Fay - There seems to be a new treasure to behold at each turn and it’s easy to imagine the lavish life of the Spanish royal family, who occupy its upper rooms when visiting Seville to this day.

Dan - The Alcázar was used in the filming of Lawrence of Arabia and the fifth season of Game of Thrones was filmed in the province of Seville as well as the palace.

Fay - It’s easy to while away a very pleasant morning or afternoon in the palace and gardens, I especially loved the tiled benches tucked away near the reflection pond.

Dan - The Torre del Oro or Tower of Gold sits alongside Seville's river and was originally a military watchtower. Constructed in the 13th Century,
the tower was originally one of two anchor points of a chain that could block the river to protect Seville.

Fay - The Plaza de España is a plaza in the Parque de Maria Luisa.

Dan - It was built in 1928 for the Ibéro - American exposition of 1929 to showcase all things Spanish and to build better relationships between Spain and the many countries in attendance.

Fay - It is a perfect example of regionalism architecture mixing elements of Baroque, Renaissance and Moorish revival styles.

Dan - The tiled areas running around the horseshoe each represent and celebrate a different region of Spain. At the Expo, they showcased crafts and delicacies of each region. Spanish tourists can often be seen posing for photos in their home region. The bookshelves these days are sometimes used as an informal book swap.

Fay - These days the area is perfect for a relaxing day out with stalls selling refreshments, ice creams and toys for children, boats and horse drawn carriages to hire, parks to explore and toilets.

Fay - It’s the sort of place you want to linger just to admire it for a little bit longer.

Dan - This whole area of Seville was expanded with hotels and parks, with wider roads to welcome the influx of visitors.

Dan - All the buildings have since been repurposed as Government offices, museums and consulates.

Fay - Seville is the perfect Winter sun destination. It’s a fascinating and beautiful cultural city and the coast is only an hour away.

Dan - Sitting either side of the huge river Guadalquivir, it has many bridges connecting the neighbourhoods of Seville to the old and new town areas.

Fay - We walked in across a beautiful bridge from Triana and headed into the old town.

Dan - The modern trams gleam in stark contrast with the ancient buildings; the Seville cathedral dates back to the 1500s.

Fay - It’s easy to be mesmerised by the stunning architecture unfolding at every turn, rising up against azure blue skies as you walk and explore, warmed by the sun with the scent of oranges drifting by.

Dan - It’s a pedestrian friendly city with plenty of places to sit and watch the world go by as well as parks to explore.

Fay - The bliss of having a meal at the restaurants lining the streets or hunting for a treasure to take home never gets old. It’s the sort of place it’s a delight to get lost in making new discoveries as you go.

Dan - Unfortunately it seems to be a shop now and we found it quite expensive but hopefully it’s a good cause.

Fay - We stumbled across my favourite little square in Seville, nestled under orange trees with beautiful tiled benches, I could easily while away some happy hours here.

Fay - Welcome to the Isle of Mull! It’s the second largest island of the inner Hebrides laying off the west coast of Scotland. It’s an easy 45 minute ferry journey from beautiful Oban; reservations recommended.

Fay - It’s always worth wrapping up warm just in case, a very apt saying I have heard is if you don’t like the weather in Scotland wait 5 minutes, it’s likely to change. It’s very true!

Fay - Nothing beats the joy of the sun coming out! We hit lucky in Tobermory.

Dan - It’s a pretty town, the brightly coloured houses cheering up any dreary day. We found the chocolate shop and bakery, but have since heard there is a distillery and cheese makers on the island as well as weavers, a museum, the odd castle and lots of nature to spot, so plenty for a few days or a return visit.

Dan - The sausage rolls we bought were delicious; we mysteriously lost the film we took sampling them.

Fay - The chocolates were really lovely, some very traditional flavours revisited. There is a website you can order from to treat yourself at home.

Fay -
We tried to visit the mull standing stones but didn’t make it! We did get stuck and ended up with me hanging out the window as Dan reversed, relying on me telling him I could see the track, but truth is I couldn’t but it was go and risk overturning or sitting stuck. Dumb Luck was on our side and we got out.

Dan - Beautiful Calgary beach is a highlight of Mull; on a less windy day it’s lovely for a swim, apparently!

Dan - We were still a little obsessed with hunting for hairy coos; be sure to check out our hairy coo vlog!

Fay - We were delighted to stumble across this beautiful waterfall.

Imagine a mirror that didn’t show your beautiful face; instead it magnified all the bad and evil in the world.
The nasty hobgoblins grabbed the mirror to take it up to the angels to see what evil they could find.
But the mirror broke into a thousand pieces and fell ever so slowly down to earth.
Best friends argue and the Snow Queen grabs Kai and takes him.
Gerda doesn’t give up hunting for him.
She offers her beloved red shoes in payment to the river to find out where Kai went.
As she drifts down the river, she is a little distracted by a beautiful cherry tree.
Poor Gerda is grabbed and held prisoner by a wicked old lady. Time passes and she almost forgets everything, till a single red rose reminds her of Kai.
Gerda is gifted a golden carriage and warm blankets for her journey but is robbed of them en-route.
Once more the kindest of strangers saves her and she is given a reindeer.
She travels through night and day, and days and weeks, to find Kai;
she even looks for him in the swirling Northern Lights.
A friendly clue is written on fish skin and sends her in the right direction.
Finally she finds Kai held prisoner by the Snow Queen. Can Kai spell out Eternity, and win his freedom?
Gerda gives him a rose and they hug and cry. Kai's tears flow, dislodging the shard of mirror from his eye and they escape for home.

The illuminations have a magical start with the water gardens lit up with a Frozen theme; it is really quite enchanting.

Reimagined once more, the trail this year is on a flat route so ideal for pushchairs and mobility scooters and makes for a gentle stroll.

A delightful surprise of light and music is around every corner.

We were greeted by a very Nordic looking Santa who was keen to check children and parents had been behaving themselves!

It was lovely to pause and warm up toasting our marshmallows over the fire pits.

Churchill's garden is transformed into a flower meadow with captivating changing lights that continue on nearby trees.

Fay - Oban, meaning Little Bay in Gaelic, forms a perfect horseshoe full of fishing boats and ferries. The town built up around a distillery, and a rail link finally arrived in 1880 bringing a wave of tourism and prosperity.

Dan - Oban is considered the gateway to the Hebrides islands, and is just a ferry ride away from Kerrera, Lismore, Mull, Iona and Coll.

Fay - We enjoyed exploring a lovely range of tourist shops with a good quality of merchandise, and stumbled across a delightful artists collective.

Dan - We found an ice cream shop which lured us in with talk of Gelato.

Fay - We spent a blissfully lazy day in Oban, taking a stroll along the promenade, and enjoying the view from our perfectly placed Oban apartment. Vlog to follow.

Fay - We only really discovered highland cows as we were planning our Scottish trip. We are fairly obsessed with them now and gathered more hairy coo souvenirs than we like to admit!

Dan - We found the Hairy Coo strangely elusive on our trip but were determined!

Fay - Highland cows were bought to the Scottish Highlands by Neolithic farmers in the second millennia BC. Studies have found they have a clear structure and hierarchy of dominance within the herd, which reduces aggression. Social standing depends on age and sex. Young bulls will dominate adult cows by about age 2.

Dan - In the meantime the scenery was stunning!

Dan - They have long wide horns and long woolly coats. The usual coat colour is a reddish brown seen in approximately 60% of the population.

Fay - We took our Hairy Coo Hunt to the Isle of Mull and were not disappointed!

Fay - We were so excited to find a gorgeous Hairy Coo by the roadside, so travelled on exploring Mull hopeful for another sighting.

Fay - We loved seeing Hairy Coos in the wild but felt more cautious up close as they are huge! We were careful not to bother them or to stand between a mother and calf.

Dan - Their coats have two layers, with the outer one being oily. They are considered almost as cold tolerant as Arctic Caribou and Reindeer.

Dan - Often considered the boundary between the Lowlands and Highlands of Scotland, Lomond a freshwater Loch, is 22 miles long and 5 miles wide.

Fay - As evening approached, the rain cleared, so we drove up to Fort William for dinner and caught these stunning views over Loch Linnhe.

Dan - Formed by a volcanic eruption about 450 million years ago, and further moulded by Ice Age glacier, these stunning views have been admired for centuries.

Fay - If you are visiting Glencoe be sure to allow a few days in case of rain or poor visibility.

Dan - Glencoe Falls, also known as the "meeting of the three waters". Best after heavy rainfall and stunning in the Autumn.

Fay - The lion rampant is the royal standard of Scottish Royalty, dating back to 1222. The massacre of Glencoe is another shameful stain on British history.

Dan - The beautiful Visitor Centre is nestled in a woodland glade. Parking costs £4 per day. There is a Glencoe film, cafe and shop, as well as a scenic view.

Fay - Launched in 1953, the Royal Yacht Britannia was a floating palace and the royal families refuge for 44 years. It clocked up over a million nautical miles during 968 state visits!

Dan - The Bridge, the area from which the yacht was commanded and officers navigated.

Fay - The Queen's favourite spot on the yacht where she enjoyed breakfast and afternoon tea as well as amazing sea views.

Fay - It’s possible to enjoy a Cream Tea and other refreshments on the Royal Deck.

Dan - The Queen's Sitting Room, where she worked on various Government documents.

Fay - The Queen's cabin. The fabric was bought by Queen Victoria but never used, until it was put to good use on Britannia.

Dan - Prince Philip enjoyed a more functional space. There is a sweet "Spot the Corgi" game for kids.

Dan - Prince Charles insisted on a double bed for his honeymoon!

Dan - The Rolls Royce was stored in a garage on deck until it was needed ashore on state visits.

Fay - Going further below deck to the crews' quarters, it must have been cramped, with 250 crew on board.

Fay - The Officers Mess looks comfortable though.

Fay - Fully equipped for state banquets and entertaining, a lot of the yacht's space goes to these working rooms.

Fay - We took a bus on the Edinburgh Tour route back to stop one and switched to the city sightseeing tour. There are 3 tours run by the same company and the one ticket costing £16 covers them all.
There are also 48 hour tickets that run from whatever time of day you buy them costing £24.

Dan - Of course COVID was still a factor.

Fay - Drawn once more to the castle and its beautiful look out, the Royal Mile is irresistible.

Fay - Back down aptly named castle hill to explore

Dan - What looks like a striking Victorian church is in-fact a four room venue. There is a cafe, so it’s worth a look inside.

Fay - There are plenty of gift shops to pick from, from Cashmere to kilts. Edinburgh has everything a tourist heart could possibly desire.

Dan- St Giles Cathedral is an imposing building in old town Edinburgh. Built in the 14th century it houses some beautiful stained glass.

Fay - We had heard exciting rumours of delicious pies at the Pie Maker just off Edinburgh old town.

Dan - Heading the full length of High Street on to Canon Gate Street leads you to the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyrood, the other end of the Royal Mile to the castle. The pretty streets are well worth the walk.

Fay - Edinburgh always has just one more pretty street to see, expect to find your last legs!

Dan - Driving on a single carriageway to Scotland's capital feels surreal. We later discovered the main route is just as small! Traffic was light.

Fay - Scotland threw a few seasons at us on route but we arrived in Edinburgh to glorious sunshine.

Dan - A statue to a devoted dog who waited by his owner's graveside for 14 years. Rub his nose for luck, then hand sanitise due to COVID.

Fay - We stumbled across the Royal Mile, the main tourist street in the centre of Edinburgh old town. It’s hilly but easy to explore on foot, and every turn gives you another magnificent view.

Dan - Full of souvenir shops and attractions, restaurants and pubs it’s a great city to explore.

Fay - One last hill takes you up to Edinburgh castle and a lookout point over the city. Be sure to book ahead for the castle; we missed out this time but plan to film there soon.

Dan - Dating back to a fort in the Iron Age, a castle has been on this spot for many centuries, from royal residence to military garrison, prison and fortress.

Fay - Keswick said without the W, is a delightful English market town, even on a rainy day. It’s a place to head to for some essentials and more varied shops. Dating back to the 13th century it has a large pedestrian centre making it easy to explore on foot.

Dan - We bought some green slate as a souvenir from this lovely shop in town.

Dan - There are plenty of restaurants to choose from.

Fay - The sausages were amazing!

Dan - Lying immediately south of Keswick and fed by the river Derwent, it is about 3 miles long and one mile across.

Fay - There are various stops around the lake with different amenities, from ice creams to boat trips; finding a loo was pretty easy too.

Fay - This lake is a lot more natural and secluded.

Dan - Castlerigg Stones is one of the oldest to be found in Britain, dating back to the Neolithic period, about 5000 years ago, comprising of 38 stones up to 10 feet tall!

Fay - Windermere has been a popular British tourist destination since the railway reached it back in 1847.

Dan - Ambleside also has a lovely lakefront area, where boats can be hired, and there are plenty of spots to enjoy the view. Check out our Ambleside Vlog to see more of the town.

Fay - The still day and moody sky, made for beautiful inky reflections in the lake.

Dan - It’s possible to take a steamer boat trip to Bowness and Lakeside on Windermere, offering fine views of the lake and mountains, and costing about £14 per adult.

Fay - Wray Castle was built as a home, with stunning lake views, 180 years ago, very recent in terms of British history. It’s built in a Gothic Revival style. It’s been vacant since the 1920s. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic with some scenic walks and even the possibility of a swim.

Dan - It's no surprise it’s so popular with the lake and surrounding villages connected to the stunning British countryside with its winding roads and pretty views.

Fay - Cartmel is a Medieval village a few miles North West of Grange over Sands.

Fay - More recently it is home of Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, which I can confirm is amazing and is now available from Waitrose.

Dan - Close to the River Eea, it is also home of the 12th Century Cartmel Priory. Bells ring each Sunday calling the parishioners to worship.

Fay - Is that Miss Tiggywinkle?

Fay - Beatrix Potter's 17th century farmhouse, Hill Top is open for visitors and is a Time Capsule of her life. We enjoyed a walk round the village.

Fay - Gloucester Cathedral started life as St Peters Abbey, founded in 679 AD and echoes of its' former life can be seen to this day.

Fay - The Stained glass windows date from the 14th century to the present day, with distinct styles.

Dan - Most notably the writing in blood on the wall in the Chamber of Secrets, some troll scenes and moaning myrtles flooded bathroom.

Dan - Gloucester Cathedral also has an app you can download offering a personal tour.

Fay - It’s the sort of place that you are drawn to linger just to soak in the centuries of reflective calm.

Dan - The Cathedral consists of a Norman nave with every style of gothic architecture.

Dan - Up some windy stairs offers a lovely view point of the Cathedral below.

Dan - There is a state of the art zone with clever projections, information hubs and child friendly hands on activities giving insight into the building and its' history.

Fay - It feels a privilege to walk in the shadow of so much history. I highly recommend a visit.

Dan - Nestled in the Southwest of England, Gloucester was founded by the Romans on the River Severn. You can still see preserved parts of the medieval walls and gates that were eventually removed to allow for traffic flow.

Fay - We had heard exciting rumours of farm made cheese and speciality sausages sold at the farm house deli.

Dan - We enjoyed exploring the canal area with its market and the quays, a rejuvenated modern shopping street.
Fay - The highlight for me was a Lindt chocolate shop. Where we found the most delicious chocolate caramel bars. There are also plenty of places to eat either in the market or the restaurant area.

Fay - The sausages were also amazing cooking up with a lovely glaze. I will definitely be getting more next time we visit!

Revenge is a powerful emotion and can be sort from beyond the grave, as is the case in our haunting tonight.

Imagine the horror and injustice it takes to imprint itself on the very bones of a person that rise up to haunt their tormentor, long after the flesh has gone cold and rotted away.

This haunting was on a mission from beyond the grave.

Myles Philipson was a wealthy man and a generous host. His parties were lavish with fine food and imported wines served on silver platters. It was all about status and prestige.

The house was full to the brim the night he was celebrating, claiming the land adjacent to his, it added a lovely lakeside view to his already impressive property.

Just as dinner was about to be served, a screaming skull appeared on the fireplace and cut the revelry with the knife of its ungodly wailing.

The skull had red glowing eyes and wailed continuously, till all his guests ran from the Manor clutching their ears, in fear of this terrifying manifestation.

One brave guest paused for a moment to remind Phillipson of the curse that Dorothy had cast upon him as John and Dorothy Cook were dragged to the scaffold to be hung until dead.

John and Dorothy Cook were an elderly couple who lived a good life running a farm they had built up during their lifetime, on some prime lakefront real estate way back in the 1600s.

Wealthy land owner and magistrate Myles Phillipson tried to buy their land, as it would finish off his adjacent plot beautifully giving him lake access.

The Cooks were happy and settled in their ways and had no desire to move and start over. They loved their home and wanted to end their days tending the land, so they refused his generous offer and considered the matter closed.

That Christmas they were unexpectedly invited to Phillipson's home and enjoyed a fine feast, dining off expensive platters and supping from the finest silver goblets.

They went home and slept off their excesses, only to be woken early the next morning and placed under arrest for stealing the very goblets they had drank from the night before.

In truth, identical goblets had been hidden in their home by a member of Philipson's staff, in a cruel set up. Justice was harsh and swift in UK in the 1600s, with no prisons it was handed down on the spot and more often than not, involved being hung.

With Phillipson being the local magistrate, their fates were soon sealed.

John Cook protested to no avail. Dorothy took more direct action; in her last moments on this earth, fueled by the horrific injustice of their sentence: she placed a curse on Phillipson. He would never prosper from then on, for she would haunt him for the rest of his days.

The poor couple were dragged from the courthouse and hung.

In an effort to get his guests back to the party, Phillipson threw the skull into the lake and bade his guests continue their revelry, but no sooner were the words "The skull is gone" uttered, did the skull reappear and resumed its unholy wailing, at the expense of who had the misfortune to witness it.

Philipson gathered some friends and returned the skull to the graveyard, digging and returning it to its rightful grave.

No sooner had they returned to the house, did the skull appear once more screaming the place down with demonic red glowing eyes.

All his guests ran for their lives.

Philipson burnt the hateful skull that night and went to bed assuming the job was finally done.

In truth Philipson was a cursed man from that day forward.
The skull sat and wailed morning, noon and night.

He never held another party. Word got out about the curse of the skull and people wanted nothing to do with a cursed man. Worse yet, his business ventures failed, and he eventually died penniless.

His heirs for generations to come were unable to live in the mansion, for the skull remained there.

Only when the house fell into ruin did the desperate haunting cease and maybe justice had finally, been served.

1. Father Christmas

Father Christmas is the traditional English name for the embodiment of Christmas.
He was originally part of an English folkloric tradition. The figure we know and love today was created in the late Victorian period, but a spirit of Christmas had been personified for Centuries.
First recorded in the 15th Century, with Father Christmas himself first appearing in the mid 17th Century.
Until Victorian times, Father Christmas was concerned with adult feasting and merry-making. He had no particular connection with children or with the giving of presents, nocturnal visits, stockings, chimneys or reindeer. But as later Victorian Christmases developed into child-centric family festivals, Father Christmas became a bringer of gifts.

2. Christmas Stockings

The tradition of hanging a Christmas stocking by the fireplace or end of the bed is thought to originate to Saint Nicholas. During his lifetime, one legend that persists is that Saint Nicholas heard of a family in need. He decided to help in secret. After dark he threw three bags of gold through an open window, one landed in a stocking that was hung by the fireplace to dry.
This led to the custom of children hanging stockings eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas.
To this day children hang beautifully decorated Christmas stockings in the hope of gifts on Christmas Eve and not a piece of coal for being naughty.

3. The Yule Log

...is a specially selected log burnt on a hearth as a Christmas tradition. The origin of the folk custom is unclear and may ultimately derive from Germanic paganism.
The familiar custom of burning the Yule Log dates back to earlier solstice celebrations and the tradition of bonfires. This Christmas practice calls for burning a portion of the log each evening until Twelfth Night. The log is subsequently placed beneath the bed for luck.
When I think of a Yule Log I think of a cake! A delicious chocolate cake in the shape of a log and decorated with icing like chocolate bark; Delicious!

4. Christmas Eve Midnight Mass

If you venture out at midnight on Christmas Eve near a parish church in UK you may well see a Midnight Mass in progress. Held on the night of Christmas Eve at midnight just as it gives way to Christmas Day. A joyful celebration and coming together of the church community in honour of the nativity of Jesus.
It is called Mass regardless of denomination as it includes the celebration of Holy Communion.
For religious families this is the start of Christmas and some presents are opened and the feasting begins.

5. Carol Singers

For Centuries, pagan songs were sung around the Winter Solstice; as Christianity crept in the songs became carols.
The first official Carol was written in the 1400s but Carols really took off in the Victorian era. Official groups of musicians and carol singers called waits would go door to door entertaining the residents and being offered food or coins in return.
These days Carol Singers can be found in city centres on the run up to Christmas collecting money for charity.

6. Christmas Cake

A traditional Christmas Cake is made with moist Currants, Sultanas and Raisins which have been soaked in Brandy and using Carrots for sweetness, many a child watching of my generation has exclaimed, carrots! In a cake?! While eagerly awaiting to stir it for luck!
In my childhood, cakes were still largely homemade and stored in cupboards pre-icing so Brandy could be added over a month or so. Today, far more are bought or traded for more modern desserts.
The cake is covered in layers of marzipan and then white icing and is usually decorated with Christmas themed figures such as Father Christmas or snowmen.

7. Pantomine

Going to see the Panto or Pantomime is a real treat for young and old during the festive period. Designed for family entertainment, the story is often based on a well known fairy tale.
A modern Panto includes gags, slapstick, comedy and dancing as well as an expected sing-a-long, with the audience and a comedy searching sequence with set music everyone knows, all the audience call out, "He's behind you"! But he is never found despite being in plain sight.
The Pantomime Dame is a man dressed up to hilarious results and the lead male character is a woman often showing off her legs in breeches.
Topical humour is also included, to which the audience laugh knowingly. Sweets are often thrown out to the children in the audience and water pistols are occasionally deployed.

With food and drink stalls, fairground rides and a Christmas market, you can enjoy a full on festive experience even before you sample the main events.

As the dark nights draw in there is something irresistible about lighting up the night with festive cheer.

A romantic rose garden lit up with thousands of blooms was captivating.
I didn’t spot any proposals but this really would be the perfect spot!

Blenheim Palace is such an iconic monument. It is the perfect backdrop.

Father Christmas is on hand to delight your little ones with a first glimpse.

We really enjoyed toasting our marshmallows over the fire pit. They were delicious! With flavours like Vanilla, Chocolate and Salted Caramel to pick from, and only £1.50 each.

Nothing beats wrapping up warm with loved ones and enjoying the Christmas Illuminations.

Fay - As if stepping into a picture postcard, the winding roads of the Lake District on a sunny day are captivating.

Fay - Try as we might with different camera angles and high resolution, nothing can capture what the human eye sees or the experience of being here and gazing in wonder at these beautiful views.

Fay - The simple pleasure of pausing the hurry of life to sit and breathe it all in while enjoying a picnic is one of the iconic experiences of travel round this green and pleasant land.

Fay - Meet Mr Hardwick sheep; more about him later.

Dan - Dry stone walls curve their way along the roads of the Lake District, claiming farmers land. Built this way for thousands of years by carefully selecting and stacking stones to interlink, held by their own weight in a primitive game of Tetris.

Dan - A car-park for twenty vehicles is close by with a walk suitable for all abilities around the Tarn. You can look out for Badgers and Squirrels, various Deer and the occasional Otter.
Artefacts dating back to the Bronze Age have been found in the area and remains of an iron age encampment.

Dan - The Honister Pass is a mountain pass in the Valley of Borrowdale in the Lake District.
The pass reaches an altitude of 1167 feet, making it one of the highest in the region, with steep gradients of up to 25%

Fay - On a clear day the views are supposed to be spectacular.

Fay - More in line with our experience, Honister Pass holds a UK rainfall record.

Fay - Sticky sugar has been added to the road salt. Some sheep are addicted and have been known to lick the road.

Fay - Herdwick sheep have been in and around the Lake District for centuries. The adult sheep tend to stay on the fell tops year round.

Fay - Each farmer's herd is identified by Lug Marks: small notches in the sheep’s ear and Smit Marks: coloured marks on the sheep's fleece.
These marks are set by tradition

Fay - and have been registered in a Shepherd's guide for the past 200 years.
