Motion Design 2D has not been the first and most logic option when it comes to Unreal Engine. In fact; many has used it like you would use any other 3D software; do your 3D stuff, animate, render and export to other softwares like Adobe After Effects or Nuke. And even that could be a pain, because the render options for Movies is not that easy and logic ... or at least was not, with the Movie Render Que and the Sequencer. It could be pretty darn difficult to adjust to that angle of rendering, because Unreal Engine originally is a Game engine.
Now ... Epic games has taken a huge step towards giving Adobe and Foundry a run for their money, with this new Motion Design tool in Unreal Engine 5.4.

And of course it was also a pain to develop this movie and it took forever to place this 3D version of Walther in the different scenes. But at the same time, I could not stop laughing, seeing him at my smartphone, via the AR in these different settings.
Just for your information, the locations are Sagrada Familia, Boquria market, The Beach and The Cathedral of Barcelona.
The proces of developing this film was; 1) Find a 3D model of Walther White 2) Dress him up in the lab-suit 3) Import him to Mixamo and set the bones 4) FInd an animation that suits - in this particular setting - the Thriller dance 5) Export it from Mixamo 6) Import it into Adobe Aero software on the Desktop computer 7) Import it and set the trigger to the animation that comes from Mixamo 8) Find locations and have a lot of patience setting it up.

Viewiing your scene from Unreal to Nuke Foundry explainer: To be able to do that; seeing your stuff from Unreal Engine (Unreal Engine 5.3.2) directlyl insice of the the Nuke Foundry viewport, is a software living proof of how things are agoing in the right direction. Especially when it comes to developing looks and feel, animation, 3D interaction, VFX (vixual FX) - actually everything that is related to the business of providing high end animation and VFX material.

In my opinion Unreal Engine and Epic games are one of the most innovative and progressive Software companies out there. And when providing solutions like this one, where it is possible for third party developers like Foundry with their Nuke VFX compositing directly integrated with the Epic Games Unreal Engine, it is just showing us the way to the stars, and how VFX artists now and in the future will be able to develop post production and compositing on an whole new level, with an incredible amount of effeciency.
That is how the world goes and what we should embrace. A new way of effeciency in VFX productions, and time well spend on productions where the focus is on the creativity and not problematic, heavy and time consuming renders costs, but on how to make things look good!!!! That is what we want to see. Stuff that looks good.
When you enter the theater for a production where the focus has been on post production, vfx and the cinematic compositing of complex setups, you want to see artists that have had a good time developing and evolving those scenes. Not VFX artist and compositors who have struggled with the technical boundaries and long render times.
But that of course requires a big effort from the people who provides the software that makes these tasks possible. And here Epic Games with their Unreal Engine Cinematic focus, with the possibilities of direct compositing with software like Foundry's Nuke has made a game changer.

The challenge of the pivot points direction in the standard setup, is that if the arrows of the Gizmo for the pivot point in Unreal Engine, is not directlly aligned with the object you want to move in Unreal Engine, it can be really difficult to place your object.
So; I found that there was actually many tutorials out there on Pivot points in Unreal Engine, but none that touches this subject as far as I can see. And I woul guess it is because it should be basic knowledge, and of course I have heard it before ... a thousand times, but sometimes you tend to forget even the smpliest things. To be honest; firstly I tried it in the AI to Video engine Runway ML, but to be honest; it has horrible lip reading. So it was not at all like I wanted. But it gave me the result of the AI render pretty quick. But I guess that was because it didn't use that many AI render powers to mouth read and make the mouth of the character actually talk.
Here the AI engine Kaiber did a very good job. It read the lips almost 100% correctly.

But; just as you know; Martin Thorborgs AI Ironman peptalk is about a simple advice to success. And the advice in all its simplicity is "Don't be late."Video AI comparison — Runway Kaiber ComparisonRene Brokop2023-06-14 | This is a small Video AI comparison between Runway ML Gen 1 with Warp fusion, some of the better video tools for AI. This comparison is based on the same clip of the same dancer, doing the same moves, right next to each other.
In this video AI comparison between the Runway and Kaiber, and how they read the same prompt — you can see that it is interpreted totally different. Both interesting and fun. For me personally it makes the market of AI engines for video, so much more interesting and fun and creative.
So far I have made comparisons between mostly AI image generators, but now the AI video is pushing harder and harder, and the video AI engines reading on the prompts are getting more and more sophisticated — and creative.
Personally I enjoy very much testing and comparing different AI engines for video, and as written earlier; this test is a test between Kaiber and Runway ML. Really interesting stuff that is going on these days with AI development.

And i just got this image in my head from the Breaking Bad Dessert scene — a dance scene where Walter White and Jessie dances in a rather crazy way.
Everything is set up in Unreal Engine, and Real Time Rendered. What you see is what you get — in regards to light, shadows, textures in Unreal Engine. Especially since Epic Games launched Unreal Engine 5 with the Nanite system and the Lumen Global illumination, Unreal Engine really has been a game changer.
The smoke from the RV is also a Real time rendering in Unreal Engine, using the Niagara fluid system.
The dance animations is based on Adobes Mixamo system, and the Breaking Bad characters, Walter White and Jessie and the RV Car 3D models are partly modelled and acquired from Turbosquid, Sketchfab and CG Trader. mixamo.com @adobe

I am incredible proud that Søren Bendt — the director of HUM — called me back then and asked if i wanted to do the music and be the composer fo music for his short film. I enjoyed working with such a great talent, and although about the only thing that DIDN`T win an award for short film production, was the composition of the music, i am still proud of what we did together — Søren and I.
To do a score for a short film, is hard work, like everything else. I remember when Søren called me and said i had to to one extra song, as a music score that would give the feeling of progression. I protested and said; "I can't do it." And half an hour later, I wrote to him on Messenger and said; "I think i got it."

This campaign for the Metro in Denmark was absolutely fun to work with and I enjoyed the proces of creating the style and animation and motion graphics design Metroselskabet was looking for.
Basically Metro Denmark (Metroselskabet) asked for an animated motiongraphics design movie, where a counter would count to 100 million, while we will see a representation of the broad target group of people who every day travels with the Metro in Denmark. An amazing number of 100 million people using the public transportation of the Metro ... in one year!!
That is impressive — also when it comes to sustainable mobility. The more people who travels with public transportation — including the Metro in Denmark — the less we pollute the environment, and we get more and more sustainable. So — a 100 million people travelling with the Metro in Denmark is a milestone when aiming for sustainable mobility in DK.

I tried to give it this loose, organic, kinda humoures feel to it. I wanted this 2D animation and motion-graphipcs movie to be something you could — at least — smile about.

This plugin actually does what it says it does. It takes a true duplicate of a Comp and ALL of its precomps giving you a new unique structure. It is available at aescripts.com as a “Name your own price” plugin. So; it is not exactly free, but it can be, if you want to.
The reason why I am mentioning this small plugin for After Effects, is because it is so darn simple — in particular with this simple little thing: to push or offset your layers exponentially forward or backward in the timeline.
In most cases, I find what you need iis just the ability to push the layers forward or backward exponentially.
And that is so simple in Utility box. You pick your layers. You write the amount you want to push it forward. If you pick the bottom layer first, it will start with the bottom layer. If you pick the top layer first — it will start with the top layer.
And you can also go the other way — or reverse it, by writing the same value with a negative value.
Utility box also has other options available, where you can offset your stuff exponentially. For instance transform. Let me just show you one quick example; here I have several layers, that I want to push out in the X-axis, keeping the same distance between them. So I simply define an “endpoint” for where the latest shape should end, and push “Sequence, and as you can see “the other shapes will also be offset out in the X-axis, but they are offset with a precise calculated exponential distance between them.
You pick your shape. Set your cursor where you want your Trim path animation to start. Click the “In” button. And here you go.
You can also choose to start the Trim animation from the middle. Up to you.
And a need little feature is that you can animate it out again.
The tracking is kind of interesting. So if you click that, it will generate a Null that is based on either the in or end point of the trim animation. And that can generate some interesting effects if we parent an object to the generated null.
Kease comes with a ton of advanced easings. And what is great about this tool and their build in easings, is that it is Keyframes right out of the bat. No expressions. No scripts you need to bake. No mysterious output with “Red marked” values. It is just keyframes. Keyframes you can go directly into and alter like you want. Oh man, have I been searching for that. Beautiful work by the developer. Thank you!!!
VideoCopilot is one of my absolute top After Effects heroes of all time. Now; I could go and mention their FX Console plugin, but that´s pretty much a part of every “MUST HAVE” plugin tutorial out there, and for good reason. It IS a must have plugin for After effects.
The Saber plugin.
That tool is amazing — of course for making lightsabers, but there is so, so, so much more to do. Let me just demonstrate quickly.
You start of by building a Solid and you apply the Saber Effect to it. And boom. Here you have a lightsaber. In blue. But of course, you can tweak colors, length, starting point and ending point and so on. And you can apply some crazy preset effects to it — or create your own.
But one thing that is really powerful is that you can apply the effect to another shape or text layer. In this case I have a Saber text layer. I can then go into my Saber Effects layer and choose to customise the core and choose the Text layer to create the shape of the outline and Voila.

As a (hopefully innovative) motion-design studio, we are not afraid of the new technology. In fact we strive to welcome every new thing going on. Admittedly it is hard to keep track of everything that is going on; both in the 2D animation world, the 3D engines that get more and more powerful and optimized and now ... all the new AI engines that is popping up all over the place.
In this particular case we used the AI engine Midjourney to generate 2D images of a jungle we wanted to be fantasy like and inspired by Avatar.
We spend a lot of time generating the right prompt in the AI engine (Midjourney) to get the right look of the Fantasy / Avatar jungle, but when we got it, it was perfect. And then we could make the same prompt 5 - 6 times and get different results in the AI engine, generating 2D images that would perfectly match the feeling we were going for.
After that we cut each AI generated image into pieces, that would fit the layers of the depth of the 2D image, when transformed into a 3D image — and then (in After Effects) push each piece down the Z-Axis.
At the same time we also — from the same AI engine Midjourney — generated a butterfly / orchid kind of species, to be the corporate look of the project.
This particular AI generated butterfly / orchid in 2D, we exported and used as a template to be rigged up (in the Blender 3D program), and after the rigging was done, animated it to be organic and smooth in its movement.
At the same time we developed a hairy jellyfish that would flow through the air of this jungle — like a spacey out of this world kinda species.
And that was kind of it! That is our bid on how to make AI generated images, in a mix with 2D and 3D, become an authentic piece of art, crafted uniquely by you. Easy right!!? ;)

And I totally agree with Thom Yorke on his opinion on How to disappear completely as being their best song ever. How to disappear completely it is the most beautiful song they ever did. Period!
But as mentioned earlier; this is my humble and rather spontaneous live guitar cover of the song, one afternoon, where I had stayed in my friends artist lab for a couple of days, discussing and enjoying music. I have been a Radiohead fan for many years now and I just remember so clearly when KID A came out. We had been at the concert, where the album just had been released and we hardly knew any of the songs from it. But after the concert I would listen to KID A over and over again. It was such a mysterious sound and very, very introvert. Back then I thought it to be weird in the first place, that you would present something like that after you had done OK Computer.
But then I came to realize that to do a follow up of an album like OK Computer, that in some places had got the label "The best album of the universe." How would you follow up on something like that. And of course the way to go, would to go the total opposite direction and make an introvert album like "KID A."
Back then my cousin also listened all day to the album and we had kind of a "competition" on which songs we liked the most. I was changing ever so often to a new song; Optimistic and Idioteque was on the list, but one afternoon this song — song no4; How to disappear completely just started to grow on me. And it kept on growing.
I have made many tryout of making a cover of How to disappear completely, but it is such an impossible song to live up too. And in the end, I agreed with myself; you just can't , so I decided to just upload this particular cover of How to disappear completely of Radiohead and see what happens.

Many of us have seen tutorials and know how to work with easings in After Effects — especially when it comes to moving an object from point A to B in one Axis in the viewport. And we can do rather complex and advanced looking animations by doing a lot of those "One-axis-animation" after each other — or on top of each other, or some other angle on how to make stuff like organic and nice.
But sometimes you will have more complex shapes, and motion path´s and it can be a struggle to time your easing like you want to, in the jungle of keyframes, graphs, curves, speeds etc..
This particular tutorial, is based on hundreds of hours of watching different ways of working with the Speed graph and the Value graph of After Effect´s graph editor. No matter how many plugins you buy and no matter how long you postpone, you will eventually have to go into both the Value and the Speed graph of After Effects and drag those handles, pull those keys — it is just something that has to be done! Period. The Value and Speed Graph is ... as .... mr. Smith would have said it ...."inevitable."
In my own case i have been working with motion-graphics for years and I have often find myself looking for the "easy solution" — doing the dumbest thing you can do; tried to find a plugin that would do it for me. And that made the struggle even harder.
So ... here is a waaay to long tutorial, compared to what you get out of it — sorry about that — about what I find to be— at least — one way of doing easings fairly easy in After Effects, on complex animations. (It is not that complicated, but I think you get the idea when you see the tutorial.)
As I said; it is way to long, so if you just want to skip to the part where there is focus on the complex animation and shape, skip to 07:05.

According to the documentary about The Snowman, the composer—Howard Blake—actually had done this particular song — Walking in the air — for another movie. But the people behind that movie sacked it. They didn't find it to be very good. (What??!!) So when the producer for the movie contacted Howard Blake and asked him, if he had anything good in stock and he heard about the project he said: "You know what—I actually think I do!" And there you go: a classic was born.
This version is just my humble improvised attempt to give it another 'touch' without compromising the original feeling to it. (I hope)
