This Naked Mind
EP 145: Stop Fighting Food with Isabel Foxen Duke
updated
Your brain is doing exactly what a brain does when exposed to an addictive substance. You aren't drinking more than you want to because something is wrong with you, but because you are HUMAN.
Once we learn this, finding freedom from alcohol becomes so much easier.
Give yourself compassion with us in The PATH: 365 at tnmind.co/Aug2023PATH365_yts
You might have heard any of these numbers quoted when it comes to changing a habit.
If it isn't an amount of time that creates habit change what is it? Repetition? Willpower? Luck.
It turns out. It's none of those. Science has revealed that lasting habit change is a result of our emotions.
Changing how we feel about a habit is the most effective and sustainable way to change that habit long term.
And how do we change the way we feel about a habit? Knowledge. It turns out that "the more you know" isn't just a catchy after-school slogan. There's science behind it!
Try changing your relationship with alcohol a new way with us in The PATH: 365 at tnmind.co/Aug2023PATH365_yts
Once you stop drinking, it is like you are completely rediscovering yourself, and it is such an empowering awakening!
Rediscover yourself with us in The PATH: 365 at tnmind.co/Aug2023PATH365_yts
It can take some time & practice, but I have found the easiest way to give yourself grace is through recognizing intention.
So maybe you had a drink when you didn't want to. What was your intention there? Ask yourself why?
Maybe you drank because you didn't see how you couldn't. Maybe you drank because something happened where you didn't think you could deal with it without a drink. The odds are, you never had any bad intentions when you drank. In fact, you were probably doing it as an act of self-love.
When you just recognize that you had good intentions, it becomes so much easier to give yourself some grace.
Dive in to giving yourself grace with us in The PATH: 365 at tnmind.co/Aug2023PATH365_yts

It can feel like once you take on the identity of an "alcoholic", everything changes. Suddenly you feel like you aren't normal. Like something is wrong with you. Like you are to blame for becoming addicted to an addictive substance. Like you failed.
Let me share something radical with you ... nothing and no one can tell you if you are an alcoholic or not. In fact, medical professionals don't even use the term anymore. They use the term Alcohol Use Disorder, and AUD is a spectrum.
So if you feel the label is holding your back or causing shame and blame - reject it. If the label doesn't fit, you don't have to take it on.
It was once John and I rejected the label that we found true freedom. And the same can be true for you.
Explore the "alcoholic" label and find true freedom with us in The PATH: 365 at tnmind.co/Aug2023PATH365_yts
So instead of focusing how the past hurt you, flip it around and appreciate how the past molded you, and how you can make something beautiful from it.
Do it with me in The PATH: 365 at tnmind.co/Aug2023PATH365_yts
But there I was, completely alcohol-free at a dinner with my friends and laughing harder than I ever did when I had alcohol in my system.
So empowering to realize that I didn't need other than myself to have a great time!
Experience the joys of being alcohol-free with us in The Alcohol Experiment at alcoholexperiment.com
The truth is, alcohol is addictive - not only to alcoholics but to any human being who drinks it.
Using the term “alcoholic” allows us to forget alcohol is a drug by implying that drinking is “safe” for anyone who is not an alcoholic. We accept alcohol as a vital part of society. Blaming the alcoholic for alcohol-related problems. We insist that alcohol is somehow different from “hard” drugs. We feel ‘safe’ in our drinking because our friends who go to AA are alcoholics and we are not.
Let’s stop using the word alcoholic and call it like it is. I am a person who was addicted to alcohol. Much as you might have an addiction to cigarettes, food, or prescription drugs. All legal, yet deadly if abused. Let’s start honest conversations placing the blame on the addictive substances. Rather than labeling, let’s focus on treating people when they first start to question their relationship with alcohol.
Will you join me in changing the language for one of acceptance and hope? Do it with me in The Alcohol Experiment at alcoholexperiment.com
We see celebrities drinking less or nothing at all every day. Influencers are all over social media sharing their story and raising awareness about drinking. More and more people are participating in alcohol-free months like Dry January or Dry July. And of course, Quit Lit like This Naked Mind is becoming more popular than ever.
It is so beautiful to see the narrative around changing your drinking habits shift from "If you aren't drinking, you must have a problem" to "If you're getting curious about your drinking, you're making your health a priority." Let's keep this momentum going!!!
Get curious about your drinking with us in our FREE 5-Day Virtual Event beginning TOMORROW at tnmind.co/Jul2023VirtualEvent_yts

There is a huge difference between saying "I have to quit drinking" and "I want to quit drinking".
The former sounds more like an obligation, something that we are almost being forced to do. When we frame it like this, it often comes with resistance.
But if we frame this change as something positive, as something we want to do, it becomes something empowering and exciting instead!
Reframe your mindset around changing your relationship with alcohol with us in our FREE 5-Day Virtual Event at tnmind.co/Jul2023VirtualEvent_yts

I know I had that question in my mind when I first went alcohol-free. When you spend so many years associating drinking with a good time, socializing without the booze can feel like a scary thing. But it doesn't have to be!
Instead of asking that scary question, how about we switch it up & ask "What can I try with my friends now that I have so much freedom to explore?"
See what a difference that bit of positive emotion makes in that question?
There are so many fun activities for you to try that definitely don't require a drink to make fun!
Try some yoga, hiking, meditation, hang out in the park, go to a farmer's market, try some new food recipes! The list is endless!
What's your favorite alcohol-free activity to do with your friends?

Beth found herself swept up in Mommy Wine Culture, because it seemed like the only way to vent & navigate being a mom and being a woman.
This culture tells us that we can buy the solution to navigating parenthood in the form of a $12 bottle of wine because the actual solution — a major systemic overhaul — is way more complicated.
I can tell you from experience that motherhood is infinitely better, and easier to navigate, without the wine. If you're curious about breaking free from the mommy wine culture like Beth & I were, join me in our FREE 5-Day Virtual Event at tnmind.co/Jul2023VirtualEvent_yts
One of the most important things to remember is that someone else's response to your not drinking is actually only a reflection of them, not you.
Maybe they have fears about how your relationship could change. Maybe your decision is causing them to get uncomfortable with their own drinking habits. The possibilities are endless, but it is so important for you to know that their reaction has very little to do with you, and everything to do with them.
At the end of the day, the decision you are making is YOUR decision and no one else's. This lifestyle change is going to dramatically improve your life, and it will likely have a positive impact on those around you as well!
No matter what - wear this decision with pride, because it is one of the most empowering things you can do!

With This Naked Mind, I flipped that entire concept on its head. I put the blame on the alcohol, not the human. It was radical. It was against societal norms.
Like Racquel, so many go into this journey with This Naked Mind with skepticism and disbelief, and I get it.
Our method to change is unlike any other. It's rebellious.
But skepticism quickly turns to curiosity. Curiosity turns to freedom.
Maybe you're like Racquel, and you want to dive into This Naked Mind's methodology just to prove me wrong, and that's okay! I'll take it. Because my belief is that your skepticism will find its way to freedom through science and compassion like hundreds of thousands of others.

For years, I had two voices in my head:
I had the toxic voice telling me to stop drinking, telling me I was awful & a failure & that I was killing myself. This voice was telling me to do the right thing, but it was coming from a place of self-loathing & disappointment.
Then I had the compassionate voice telling me to give myself a break, to worry about this problem later, and that everything was going to be okay.
It wasn't until I started journaling these things that I could see which voice I was listening to, and why. Once I put these thoughts on paper, I could see that even though I should stop drinking, I was listening to the compassionate voice. And the self-loathing voice was actually what was causing me to drink even more.
Once you give yourself some distance & put these things down on paper, it is so much easier to understand and use. I truly believe that those who incorporate journaling into their journey are more likely to be successful at creating lasting change.

We change our opinions, we change our beliefs, we change our feelings, we change our minds.
This is growth. And the more we learn, the more we grow.
Just because you feel one way today does not mean you have to feel the same way or want the same things tomorrow.
It's okay to change your mind.
Are you open to change? Join us for the change of a lifetime in The PATH at tnmind.co/Jul2023PATH365_yts
Yet that's how we approach changing our relationship with alcohol. We avoid the very idea until we have a rock-bottom experience. We create this expectation that the pain we cause ourselves must be great enough to force us to change, and we still aren't happy about making that change. 😬
Changing only because you've decided things can't go any further down from here isn't the greatest starting point. You're beginning in a place of such deep shame, pain, and guilt. You can choose to get curious about your relationship at any point. Not with the intention to stop drinking forever but just to see what changes you need to make on your terms. That shift in outlook and objective opens you up to a world of possibilities that didn't exist while you were waiting for rock bottom. 🌍🔓😌
Get curious about your relationship with alcohol in The Live Alcohol Experiment at tnmind.co/Jul2023PATH365_yts
If only we could play the tape forward and use our clear and present mind to experience the JOMO (joy of missing out) that we are privileged to experience by not drinking. 😌 No hangovers the next day. 🌅 No more trying to piece together the night from fuzzy memories, stories friends tell you, and pictures on your phone. 📸 No overdraft charges or $20 drinks while at the concert. 💸 The list goes on and on. 📋
The mindset shift to JOMO creates such incredible joy and anticipation in you. You can look forward to catching and singing along to all of your favorite songs. 🎶 Your memory bank will be present and engaged to capture every moment and record it for you to play back in your mind. 🧠💭 And I can assure you, you'll never wake up thinking - I wish I drank last night! 🙅♂️🍻
Experience the JOMO with us in The PATH at tnmind.co/Jul2023PATH365_yts
In using willpower, we are literally forcing ourselves to do something we don't want to do. We associate that experience with pain, and shame, and blame. It's definitely not a pleasant or easy experience.
But it doesn't have to be that way. The road to habit change doesn't have to be a painful or scary one. In fact, at This Naked Mind, it's the opposite.
Instead of using pain to change, we like to use hope & information.
When you learn something new, you feel something new. And when you feel something new, it allows you to change without pain! It allows you to change with hope and excitement. How empowering does that sound?
Try a new path to change with us in The PATH: 365 at tnmind.co/Jul2023PATH365_yts
The World Health Organization has announced that no amount of alcohol is safe.
Non-alcoholic drinks are becoming more and more popular.
The number of people getting curious about their drinking is growing every day.
Things are changing in the sober movement! Day by day, we are raising awareness on what alcohol really is, and how it works.
I don't know about you, but I couldn't be more excited about this!
Keep learning about alcohol & how it affects us in The PATH: 365 at tnmind.co/Jul2023PATH365_yts
Looking back, Soraya realized she used to gulp down that glass of liquid relief from a place of pure stress and anxiety. It was like a broken record playing in her mind, chanting, "I am trapped. Give me the drink now." Can you relate to that feeling? 😫🍸
That’s a familiar belief for so many of us. The one where you convince yourself, "I can't do this. There's something I have to tackle, and I just can't handle it." Sound familiar? 🤔💭
That thought is like a magnet pulling us towards the bottle. For Soraya it meant that even back when she was a teenager, chugging forties in the park, she convinced herself she couldn't connect with others without that drink. It's funny how our minds trick us, right? 😅🤷♀️
But here's the truth we need to embrace: We are capable of so much more than we think. That drink had us fooled, making us believe we were powerless without it. But let me tell you, you've got a reservoir of strength within you. 💪✨
Defy those self-imposed limitations and show that voice in your head who's boss. Life without the drink is a world of possibilities, where confidence, connection, and true freedom await. 🌟🗝️
Defy those limitations with us in The PATH at tnmind.co/Jul2023PATH365_yts

Before I rewired my brain & changed how I felt about alcohol, I found myself in a very similar spot. I had a successful career, an amazing husband, two kids that I loved. On the outside, I appeared to have it all together.
Except for when it came to alcohol. Alcohol was the one single thing that I could not seem to get right. Have you felt that too?
And then comes the worrying, and the questions: When will I have my next drink? Am I drinking too much? Am I an alcoholic? Do I have a problem?
So many of us ask those questions. But I have to tell you ... they are the wrong questions to be asking. Instead of asking if you have a problem, start asking WHY.
There is nothing wrong with you. You are not broken. Find out why. Michael & I both know from experience what a difference that simple question can make!
Find out why with us in The PATH at tnmind.co/Jul2023PATH365_yts

I thought that his not drinking would potentially make my not drinking a challenge. But the truth is, it was actually such a gift.
My husband drinking around me meant that I had to get really clear on my values and what I wanted. It meant I had to choose myself and continue to do so, regardless of what he was doing.
This made me so much stronger. And you know what? After reading my book, my husband stopped drinking anyways! Without a plan, without realizing it, he suddenly just didn't care to have a drink anymore.
My husband, like so many others, actually stopped drinking ON ACCIDENT because that is how powerful that rewiring of your brain can be.

There was a time when mornings were Rina’s nemesis. The mere thought of waking up and facing another day made her cringe. But those days are firmly banished to her past and now she’s head over heels in love with those early hours. 💕
For Rina, one particular morning a few months into her alcohol-free journey stands out. She sat outside in the early morning hours, cradling a warm cup of coffee, and watched the vivid show nature puts on while night makes its way into day. Sunlight pierced through the lush trees, casting a mesmerizing glow upon their vibrant leaves. It was a sight that demanded her attention, and she couldn't help but soak it all in. 🌳☀️
Moments like that bring a startling and sobering realization. Living under the influence of alcohol dims your senses, it blurs the world's beauty that’s been right in front of you the whole time. Living alcohol-free brings incredible gifts, like the joy of being able to see it all! The colors are more vibrant, the scents more intoxicating (in a good way!), and the joy more palpable. It's like discovering a hidden treasure chest that was there all along. 🌈💫
The most precious gift of all that comes from this journey is gratitude. Gratitude is the dazzling gem that an alcohol-free life unveils. It's the ability to fully appreciate the simple wonders that surround us, the moments that once went unnoticed. It's a gift that keeps on giving, growing stronger and more profound with each passing day. 🎁✨

An incredible transformation happens when we redirect our hard-earned money from alcohol to investing in ourselves. ✨💰
Gone are the days of needing to justify our self-care expenses. No longer do we have to question whether we deserve to treat ourselves or feel guilty about spending money on things that make us feel good. Now, we're taking that money we save by not drinking and channeling it into something that truly benefits us, both now and in the long run. 💪💸
Investing in yourself is a game-changer. It's giving yourself a perpetual gift. Whether it's learning a new skill, pursuing a passion project, taking care of your physical and mental well-being, or investing in personal growth, you're putting your money where it matters most—your own happiness and fulfillment. 🎁❤️
Think about it: Every dollar saved from skipping those pricey cocktails or bottles adds up to endless possibilities for self-improvement and self-discovery. You're unlocking a world of opportunities to expand your horizons, chase your dreams, and become the best version of yourself. 💫💵

Defy those limitations with us in The Live Alcohol Experiment! at tnmind.co/Jul2023LAE_yts
Tip #1: Get Curious! Once you JUST get curious about your drinking, an entire world can open up for you. There are so many possibilities that can come from getting curious & just asking some different questions!
Tip #2: Give Yourself Compassion - We have this idea in our minds that when it comes to habit change, we have to beat ourselves up in order for any change to come. I am here to tell you - that's just not true! Self-compassion is the key to change, you won't believe what a difference this one mindset shift can make!
Tip #3: Consider How Much You Really Know About Alcohol - The truth is, we probably know more about Advil than we do about what's in our drinks. But once you learn a little bit more about what alcohol does or doesn't do for you, then you can actually consider whether or not this is something that you want to do anymore.
If you're curious about your drinking, and you don't want to embark on this journey alone, join us in the Live Alcohol Experiment at tnmind.co/Jul2023LAE_yts

By definition, willpower means forcing yourself to do something you don't want to do. So while it is possible to quit using willpower, it's not easy, it's not fun, and often can actually lead to drinking even more.
I say we get out of the willpower game all together, and to do that - you change how you FEEL about alcohol so that you no longer even want it!
If you don't want to drink, it will be pretty easy not to, right? Because without desire, there is no temptation.

I couldn't have said it better myself, Steve!
We have this idea in our heads that we need booze to be social. We think alcohol helps us loosen up. We think it makes us funnier. We think it makes us a better version of ourselves. Society has actually trained us to believe that an event isn't really an event without the drinks.
But once you have found freedom and you experience these same vacations or events without alcohol as a factor, you realize how false all of those beliefs are.
In fact, vacations & holidays & get-togethers are a million times better now than they ever were when I had wine in my glass!
