Extreme fire events are often assumed to be caused by climate change, but it is not immediately clear this is the case. Heat, humidity, precipitation and wind speed all play a role in fire risk, and the exact way that these factors combine changes from day to day. Forest management practices and increased human activity in high-risk areas can also increase fire risk, and this makes it more challenging to pinpoint the reason why more fires are occurring. Colorado State University professor Dan Cooley has used multivariate statistical analysis of Fire Weather Index data to demonstrate that climate conditions in northern Colorado have changed in ways that make fires more likely to occur there – even if it is often impossible to attribute individual fires to this climactic shift.

Most worrisome is how hot it remains at night, when bodies are trying to cool down and recover from hot daytime temps. Scientists like Angel Hsu are using data collected by satellites and citizens to translate these urban effects into numbers policymakers can use when leading climate change mitigation efforts on local levels.

How do scientists understand which portions of health effects are caused by climate change, and how can health organizations be prepared? To find out, we talked with Kristie Ebi, who founded the Center for Health and the Global Environment (CHanGE) at the University of Washington. In addition to the effects of climate change, Kris told us about how many of the mitigations for climate change—e.g. switching from coal to renewable power sources, creating more environmentally-friendly transportation systems, and reducing meat in our diets—will coincidentally improve public health. She also introduced us to the rap stylings of Baba Brinkman, whose song “Climate Hero” summarizes several of the points Kris made in our episode.

However, due to human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, the oceans are warming at an alarming rate. This increase in ocean temperature is causing a range of devastating impacts, from more frequent and severe storms to rising sea levels and bleached coral reefs.
To better understand the complex interplay between ocean warming and its impact on land, scientists like Maike Sonnewald are using climate models to simulate and predict changes in ocean currents and temperatures. These models allow researchers to analyze how different factors, such as greenhouse gas emissions, ocean circulation patterns, and solar radiation, influence ocean warming and its effects on the Earth’s climate system. Through these efforts, scientists hope to develop strategies to mitigate the harmful consequences of ocean warming and protect vulnerable communities and ecosystems.

In a new paper in AGU's Geophysical Research Letters, researchers present a case study of how snowcover affects data recorded on a seismometer, which is an instrument that measures ground motion. The world's tallest geyser, Steamboat Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, has intense eruptions that eject water and steam. The eruptions are powerful enough to cause tiny ground motions from sound waves that begin in the air and then transfer into the ground. In the winter, the researchers saw smaller ground motions at two nearby seismometers, which could imply that Steamboat's eruptions are weaker in the winter. But winter in Yellowstone comes with snow, and snow is good at absorbing sound wave energy. The seismometers also showed that smaller ground motions occur when snow depths are greater. This means the strength of ground motions – which reflect the power of the geyser eruptions – should not be used to directly compare eruptions across the seasons.

The two earthquakes were only separated about 90 kilometers and about 9 hours. The strong shaking from the two earthquakes damaged and destroyed buildings and caused over 50,000 fatalities in Türkiye and Syria. The source of the quakes is among the network of faults in the region where the Anatolian, Arabian and African tectonic plates meet. Seismologists analyzed the seismic records of the quakes as recorded by seismic stations around the world, combined with the geometry of the faults, to rapidly estimate how the rupture of the two earthquakes evolved.

In a new study, researchers used consumer-grade cameras and video processing to observe infrasound waves passing through the mists after explosions at Vanuatu's Yasur Volcano. Infrasound data (black lines on the graphs) were collected at a station located within Yasur's crater along with simultaneous video (and audio) from a GoPro HERO5 Black camera (orange lines). Specialized infrasound microphones can pick up the sub-hearing sounds, but video cameras are easier to source and less expensive.

But sometimes the Atlantic leaks are quite cold and can cool down even Arctic waters, according to a new study in AGU's Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans. Researchers simulated the poleward leakage (shown in these videos) and found that sometimes Atlantic waters get intensely cooled in the Barents and Karas Seas, and when that water enters the Arctic, it reduces the amount of heat in the eastern Arctic Ocean.

Editing by Larry O'HanlonSolving the mystery of the tall, flashy Hawaiian eruptionAGU2023-04-24 | On 20 December 2020, after more than two years without an eruption at Kīlauea Volcano, lava erupted through the debris along the summit crater wall and flowed down into a hot, acidic water lake. The lava quickly heated and boiled the water, generating a volcanic cloud or plume that reached 11 to 13 kilometers above sea level, among the highest plumes on record for Kīlauea. After 90 minutes, the lake had boiled away, leaving behind a new, growing lava lake. In a new study scientists investigated the interaction between the lava and the water lake and the tall plume. Based on observations from weather radar, eyewitnesses, camera footage, acoustic measurements, and computer modeling, they found that (1) the interaction between the lava and water caused no explosions, (2) the plume contained very little ash but carried a lot of water vapor to high enough to form ice and create lightning, and (3) heat from the lava buoyed the water-rich plume much higher than expected for an eruption with so little ash.

They often drift together in pairs while rotating in opposite directions. In a new study researchers show how eddy-pairs can interact with different kinds of vortices they encounter in the ocean. In particular, they investigated how a passing eddy-pair temporarily warps a circular single eddy.
The first video is from Hughes & Miller (2017) and shows an actual eddy-pair detected from space (circled). The second video shows an eddy-pair modeled in two dimensions. The third video shows an eddy-pair in three dimensions. Because vortex interactions are very common, this study contributes to a better understanding of the oceans.

The forested land that separates the world's largest piedmont glacier from the Gulf of Alaska contains buried ice below the surface and is actively thinning and wasting away, creating pathways for ocean water intrusion to the glacier's front margin. In addition to airborne lidar surveys aimed at measuring changes in the surface height, NASA Operation IceBridge mapped the glacier's bed in detail with airborne radio echo sounding. This video clip covers a flight distance of nearly 100 km, which took around 30 minutes to fly in real-time. The video ends shortly after passing Mount Saint Elias, which rises to 5.5 km (18,008 ft) just onshore from Icy Bay.

agu.poetsforscience.orgReconstructing the Philippine SeaAGU2023-04-03 | For the last 55 million years East Asia has been undergoing a lot of complicated tectonic changes. A new model using the latest geological data has reconstructed the plate movements for that period and has been published in the AGU journal Geophysical Research Letters. The model shows a smooth movement of the Philippine Sea Plate northwards from the equator to its present position, while it rotated clockwise. The model also suggests that a dense slab of the Earth that has been detected beneath the crust of the South China Sea is likely the leading edge of Pacific Plate that was once being forced below by collision and subduction.
