THE BIG CHANGEOVER | Project Skyline Skyline Queenstown 2023-07-30 | Skyline Queenstown underwent a temporary closure starting from 23rd April 2023, in order start THE BIG CHANGEOVER phase of Project Skyline. This involved the removal of the existing Gondola Terminals and Towers to make way for the construction of a state-of-the-art Gondola system. The construction work included starting the construction of a new Base Terminal with the machine hall and back of house facilities being completed in this time. During the closure, a temporary ticketing building was established at the Base Terminal to accommodate visitors. The hard work and dedication paid off, as on 29th June 2023, Skyline Queenstown proudly reopened its doors, now equipped to offer visitors an elevated and unforgettable experience with the newly constructed top Gondola Terminal building providing breathtaking views and unforgettable memories.

Splicing the Gondola Cable | Project Skyline Skyline Queenstown 2023-06-20 | Get ready to be wowed as we take you behind the scenes of the incredible cable splicing process! This was an incredible milestone of Project Skyline, where the team connected the two ends of the Gondola rope, allowing the project to progress onto commissioning the lift and begin testing the new system.Only a handful of people worldwide are licensed to do this specialised piece of work which requires a great deal of technical skill and expertise. Hannes Koller,  a Swiss expert, joined us in Queenstown to oversee this work and ensure everything ran smoothly. The splice preformed at Skyline Queenstown is a new advanced type of splice developed by the rope manufacturer Fatzer and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences, allowing the splice length to be much shorter, allowing the work to occur in the bottom station in a single day as opposed to needing over 60m on the hillside for the old splice type. This splice is now well-proven with nearly all new installations worldwide using this newer system.This is just one of many monumental moments that all contribute to the redevelopment of Skyline Queenstown and mark an iconic time in our history.
Huey Helicopter Lifts Gondola Towers | Project Skyline Skyline Queenstown 2023-05-17 | What an incredible day it was! We witnessed a historic moment as Skyline Queenstown embarked on an extraordinary helicopter operation for the installation of our new towers. The Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter (aka the 'Huey') took to the skies, bringing a sense of excitement and awe to the Queenstown CBD. The distinctive sound of the Huey's rotor design and engine noise echoed through the air, captivating everyone in its path. As the sun rose on that memorable Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023, our team worked tirelessly to ensure a safe and efficient installation. Tower by tower, the Huey gracefully maneuvered through the steep face of Bob's Peak, replacing three towers with precision and skill. By the time lunchtime arrived, our mission was accomplished, marking a significant milestone for Project Skyline.

The Luge Takes Off! | 50 Years Of Fun Skyline Queenstown 2017-10-12 | This Kiwi invention initially evolved from slide rides which had been seen overseas, however, Hylton Hensman felt this could be improved with a cart ride running downhill on a track."Iâd read about these slide rides in Canada and the States but I felt the ride was always spoilt by not being able to pass anybody. So I thought of the idea of controllable wheels on a small vehicle on a wider track that you could race others with or just go at your own speed."After numerous prototypes the Luge as we know it was finally born! The Skyline team decided to launch the Luge as part of the brand new Rotorua Gondola complex in 1985 and it was an instant hit. Meanwhile, Queenstown was fast emerging as the adventure capital of the world: where better than to introduce this downhill ride?! In 1998 the Luge opened in Queenstown and was an immediate success â the fun was spreading.Today the fun has spread even further with the Skyline Luge now present in Canada (Mont Tremblant & Calgary), Singapore (Sentosa) and Korea (Tongyeong and soon to be Busan) with no doubt more to come.skyline.co.nz/en/queenstown
The Road To The Top - Skyline Queenstown | 50 Years Of Fun Skyline Queenstown 2017-10-04 | Bobâs Peak which rises 450m above Queenstown provides breath-taking panoramic views across Lake Wakatipu so itâs easy to see why Ian Hamilton set his sights on this hill for his road-making efforts. In the summer of 1961, Ian Hamilton (a.k.a âHammyâ) joined forces with Darrell McGregor and local businessman Hylton Hensman - bit by bit they inched their way up to Bobâs Peak."After Hammy had built the road up to Bobâs Peak, all that was there was a bare hillside, but the view was such that everybody wanted to come and see it." Jon Dumble, Original Chalet Manager.In 1963 Skyline Tours Ltd was born; a small fleet of Volkswagen vans would shuttle people up to the view. The trips were intermittent at first but a regular schedule soon developed. The bus took 20 minutes to get up, allowed 20 minutes to admire the view (later people would spend 40 minutes to an hour on top for refreshments at the Chalet) and 20 minutes back down.
