Three days, usually in June the people of Dansai - a small city in the LOEI Province /Northern Thailand/, celebrate this festival as a big buddhist celebration. In our movie, you will see only a middle part of event, which is a PhiTaKhon /masks or ghosts/ parade. This religious event has it roots in the Animism Beliefs of local people and there are a lot of symbols of fertility like giant penises made from wood carried by the participants of parade. These are traditional symbols for a good crop and rich harvest. The festival also includes a shooting of rockets into the sky - to "awake" the rain which is very important for the crop and listening to the buddhist sermons in local temple. There is also a legend, that the "ghost" or PhiTaKhon joined Lord Buddha on one of his journeys trough the jungle and nature.

People from local CBT community hosted us for 2 days and we could try some of their activities and overnight in homestays they provide for tourists. Community also produce products like organic soap&shampoo, coconut oil, detox drink and cider which are available for visitors. Their tourism and cosmetics products are base on local wisdom and respect for their nature. The trip to canal "Khlong Yao" is very refreshing, the waters are normally crystal clean (we came after big storm so the water had muddy brown colour) and there are many fish and shrimps there. The homestays are new and clean and they are a real deal, as you live&cook and eat together with local family, your host.

Yeepeng Lanna Chiang Mai Royal Silk Holidays 2013-03-19 | Yi Peng is a separate festival celebrated by the Lanna people of Northern Thailand, however, it coincides with Loi Krathong and the two are now often considered the same. Colorful lanterns adorn houses and temples, while monks, locals, and tourist launch thin paper lanterns into the sky. This video was made on the 30th of November on the "tourists event". The original event mostly for thai people took place on 24th November. The sky lanterns -- known as khom loi -- are made from rice paper and are heated by a fuel disk. When done correctly, the large lanterns fly surprisingly high, and often look like fiery stars at their peak altitude. Messages, prayers, and wishes for good luck are written on the lanterns before launch.
