2010 was a year of the weird and wonderful, with releases being unearthed that seem to be made in in a parallel universe. This album, alongside Honest Jons New Wave Dance Music From South Africa, is one of these gems. Plucked from the weird and wonderful esoteric depths is this record from 1982, for long merely whispered about as the 'Acid House Album From India'. It has finally been unearthed, and while rumours abound that it is some high profile electronic producer masquerading as an Indian pioneer, the music within is nonetheless staggering. Couple that with the in-depth information, label, artist of the original press and the original artwork that this gatefold vinyl LP provides; it seems to suggest that this is the real deal.

Droning Indian Ragas are transposed into the circuit boards of Roland's 303/808 machines making for a music that has all the reductionist groove of Acid techno, Ceephax, Phuture 303, Aphex, quite simply amazing.

This release was selected by Bleep for the Mid Year Round Up 2010.

The wunderkind James Holden has finally come of age, and has delivered up the debut album to prove it: and at 28, about time too! For although the world seems strangely intent on fixing him in his early twenties (or more specifically, a series of internet sites who have seemingly overlooked the fact that biography ages require a yearly update!), the time has come to acknowledge that DJ and producer James Holden is not quite so young anymore. The timely release of Holden's 'The Idiots Are Winning' mini-album in 2006 marked the occasion, and formed a fitting musical illustration of Holden's new-found maturity.

Still reluctant to bestow upon it the accolade of 'debut album', for Holden himself 'The Idiots Are Winning' remains an EP which grew out of control: take four dancefloor-length Holden tracks, mix in the obligatory DJ tools and alternative versions that he is so keen on, and an interlude or two for good measure, and you have far exceeded the single realm and are pushing into album territory. Not that the manner of its creation should affect the listening experience: Holden's intricate and inimitable production style ensures a coherence of atmosphere, where even DJ-friendly extended intros hold up to home-listening scrutiny. The Guardian went so far as to proclaim it "the most astonishing debut in electronic music since Boards of Canada's Music Has the Right to Children." And who are we to argue?

ManMachineMan is a project of Jost Gerischer and DJ La Monde on the Mole label. Together they produce a broad range of music from downtempo to jazz and funk infected triphop over moderate house beats or jazzy drum n bass grooves. Their work with four-to-the-floor beats for other labels like Plastic City, GAMB and their own label Monoid has made it necessary, as they say, to have an alternative outlet to produce a different variety of music.

Thus, ManMachineMan was born and their designated outlet for production has become the Mole label. "You can't listen to technoid beats all the time." says Jost. "When driving home from the clubs, you need music to relax and come down!" Levent explains:"This is another league, another level of making music. This doesn't have to be something for your feet only, than even more for your peace of mind."

With ManMachineMan, the two have created a platform from which they can impart a different style and feel even more free to stimulate the listener's creativity.

[Last.fm] Amidst heavy competition, Baby Mammoth is the Pork label's most prolific act, packing in five full LPs of blunted instrumental hip-hop between their debut in late 1996 and the end of the decade.

Like other Pork acts Fila Brazillia and Solid Doctor, the duo of Mark Blissenden and Andrew Burdall specialize in earthy breaks and ambient atmospheres, more slanted to the instrumental edge of acid jazz than other producer-based trip-hop acts.

The pair first met Pork label-head Dave Brennand and associate Steve Cobby (aka Fila Brazillia) at a club in Hull where both band and label are based. The relationship blossomed with the release of Baby Mammoth's debut album 10,000 Years Beneath The Street, in 1996.

Blissenden and Burdall then released two albums the following year (as well as an EP and single). Baby Mammoth settled down to a more languid release schedule with one LP release each year in 1998 (Another Day at the Orifice), 1999 (Swimming) 2000 (Motion Without Pain), and 2001 (Seven Up).

After a year long break, the band returned with Octo Muck in 2003. A year later Blissenden teamed with labelmates Steve Cobby and Robert Ellerby from Beige for the Fabric mix CD Fabric 18: Baby Mammoth, Beige & Solid Doctor.

Brought upon an impromptu live jam session one cold weekend in January 2010, Michael Mayer at Kompakt was immediately drawn to their combination of the synthetic and the futuristic. So seek out the found yourself. Find the sounds of cutting carrots and cereal pouring into a bowl as they conjoin with the music of humanity such as handclaps and vocals together united with drums, guitars and electronics. The first track (and lead off single) "Little House Boat" flickers and modulates in a waterfall of harmonious oscillation. These sounds that are as hard to place as the members names and set a strong overall tone for this album which is Jatoma's bubbling brook. The momentum of an acoustic 4/4 kick drum drives us through a blissful "Manipurma", "Durian" has a groovy house momentum that chimes with the keys of a child's imagination. "Bou" is a dance floor rollout that straddles the best of James Holden's creative zeal and their apparent love for the subversive. Ambient crooners like "Permafrost" and "Ma10as" leave us washed to the shore gasping for breath only then to be submerged again by the unfathomable finale Luvdisc...or is it?

Susumu Yokota (横田進 Yokota Susumu, or ススム・ヨコタ Susumu Yokota) is a prolific Japanese composer.

Yokota is well known in the English-speaking independent music scene for his albums of experimental ambient music. However, he has also had a long career as a house music DJ and has released several highly-regarded albums of house music.

He has released several albums under pseudonyms including Stevia, Ebi, and others.

Yokota's name, when written in katakana, is in the Western order (given name is followed by the family name), while his name in kanji is in the Japanese order (family name is followed by the given name).

Susumu Yokota has released his work on several different labels most recent of which is Lo Recordings in collaboration with Skin Tone. He was also responsible for the production of the Stereo Sushi cds from the Hed Kandi record label.
