Bach visited the court of Frederick II of Prussia in 1747, as his son Carl Philipp Emmanuel was director of the King's music. Bach was presented with a theme written by the King himself, which he successfully improvised upon at the keyboard. Later, not entirely satisfied with his effort, Bach composed "Das Musikalisches Opfer", dedicated to the King, with a large collection of variations upon the King's theme.
This arrangement is for flute, piccola, bassoon and timpani. It will be the Campaign Defeat theme for Prussia in the "Seven Years War Mod" for Rome Total War.
The image shows Frederick II, himself a flute player and composer, playing a concerto with Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach accompanying him at the keyboard. It was painted in 1850 by German painter Adolph Menzel.

Enjoy!March from Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary (Henry Purcell, 1695)JGBaroque2024-02-21 | This is an arrangement I made for fifes, drums, hautboys (oboes), bassoon, trumpets and timpani, of the March from Henry Purcell's "Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary". It is one of Purcell's most haunting pieces, and is known by some from Stanley Kubrick's film "A Clockwork Orange". It will serve as the Campaign Defeat Theme for Great Britain in the mod described below.
The image shows trumpeters and drummers in the funeral procession of Archduke Albert VII of Austria. The print is a 1623 issue by Cornelis Galle the Elder of the original engraving by Jacob Franquart.

Enjoy!Falensian Hymn - Renaissance Style Fife & DrumJGBaroque2024-01-29 | This is a somewhat different piece from what I usually make. I received a request quite some time ago to create something for fife & drum in a "Renaissance Holy Roman Empire" style - this is the result.
The title refers to a fictional country named the "Union of Falensia", based loosely on the HRE in the 16th century. I sought inspiration in the German landsknecht song ("Landsknechtlied") tradition, and tried to reflect their character. In the reprise, the fifes engage in a more florid and virtuosic counterpoint with plenty of embellishes.
The image depicts German landsknechts, and was made by the Augsburg-based German engraver Daniel Hopfer sometime in the 1530ies.
Enjoy!Crushing Defeat - Sarabande in D Minor (Theme from Barry Lyndon) - Baroque OrchestraJGBaroque2024-01-27 | This is an arrangement I made for fifes, hautboys (oboes), bassoon, trumpets and timpani, of the Sarabande from Georg Friedrich Händel's "Suite in D Minor" for keyboard. It is known as the main theme from Stanley Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon", which revolves around an Irish man and his adventures in the Seven Years War. This is the third and last Defeat theme of three, all varied arrangements of the same theme.
The image shows the destruction of the Spanish floating batteries by the British, during the Great Siege of Gibraltar in 1782. The painting was made in 1783 by the British painter Thomas Whitcombe.

The tune was a success from the very beginning and has been referenced in hundreds of renditions for all kinds of instruments and settings. However, as one of my channel listeners pointed out, among the instrumental versions there seemed to be few good Fife & Drum arrangements available. So, always appreciative of Arne's original composition, I made this arrangement, trying my best to capture the original Baroque feel while keeping the melody clear.

Enjoy!Heroic Victory - Nun danket alle Gott (Leuthen Chorale) - Trumpets, Fifes & HautboysJGBaroque2023-12-01 | This is a composition I made based on the German chorale "Nun danket alle Gott" ("Now Thank We All Our God"), attributed to Johann Crüger, a German composer and publisher, who published it in 1647. It was allegedly sung by the Prussian troops after their victory at the Battle of Leuthen in 1757. This version is heavily influenced by the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann and Georg Friedrich Händel, especially the chorale settings from the cantatas of the former two. It incorporates fifes, hautboys (oboes), bassoon, trumpets, drums and kettledrums. This is the third and final victory theme of a total of three, each on the same melody, but in ascending pomp.
The image depicts James FitzJames (1st Duke of Berwick) being made Duke of Liria and Jérica by King Philip V of Spain, as a reward for defeating the Anglo-Dutch-Portugeese forces at the Battle of Almanza in 1707. The painting was made in 1817 by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, a French painter.

As the first pieces in this series came to be a long time ago, I've learnt a lot since then. The drums in this fife and drum march were based upon the "English Retreat", a drum call or beating that would signal either retreat on the battlefield, or for the soldiers to return to their barracks. This beating can be heard in the beginning, and is present throughout the whole tune. New music with ties to history, you might call it!
The painting is from 1658 or 1659, and made by Dutch painter Jan Baptist Weenix. It depicts the Governor of Dutch Malakka (in present day Malaysia), Johan van Twist, traveling with the Sultan of Bijapur.
Enjoy!La National - Den Gamle Danske March (17th Century) - Fife & Drum, HautboisJGBaroque2023-11-09 | This is an arrangement I made of the Danish March "La National", or as it is known in Danish: "Den gamle danske march" (= "The Old Danish March"). It is from the 17th century, by an unknown composer, but became the standard march of the Danish army for more than a century. Here, I have arranged it for fife & drum corps, including oboes, that were common in military music during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The image is from a Dutch map collection called "Atlas van der Hagen", probably engraved by Dutch engraver "Romeyn de Hooghe" in the late 17th century. It shows the Danish army under Christian V besieging the town of Wismar in 1675, then under Swedish rule.

Cantemir was a Moldavian prince who besides being a writer and translator also composed and collected music. This peşrevi was part of a collection, the "Edvar-i Musiki", which he sent as a present to the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed III sometime in 1703-1704.

He was a polish musician who was captured by the Ottomans in his youth and ended up being sold to the Ottoman court in Constantinople, where his skill as a musician and translator brought him appreciation and high status. He is known for collecting and composing music which he compiled in a large collection.

Enjoy!Turcks March (Turkish March, around 1715)JGBaroque2023-10-29 | This is yet another Mehter rendition, though this time it is actually a tune picked from the Tobolski Manuscript of Gustaf Blidström, Swedish Prisoner of War, written down in 1715. The tune may have been picked up by Blidström when the Swedish army was campaigning in what is now Ukraine prior to the Battle of Poltava in 1709, or from some of the Kazakh turkopoles that may have visited Tobolsk where he was later held captive, as the city was close to the border with modern day Kazakhstan. We will probably never know, but it is interesting nonetheless.

Enjoy!Hücum Marşı (Traditional Ottoman Mehter Music)JGBaroque2023-10-27 | This tune is a little different from what I usually upload. It's an Ottoman Mehter tune called "Hücum Marşı" ("Attack March"), by an unknown composer. The Ottoman military music tradition developed from the end of the 13th until the early 19th century, when it was phased out in favour of western-style marching bands - which themselves were more or less based on a fusion of Western and Ottoman military music in the 18th century. The Mehter band features distinct instruments as the Zurna, a shrill reed instrument related to the oboe or shawm, the Boru, a natural trumpet very similar to the Baroque trumpets of 17th century Europe, as well as cymbals, Davuls (bass drums), frame drums, Nakkare (small kettledrums), etc.
The image shows the Battle of Mohács in 1526, where the Ottoman army under Suleiman I defeated the Hungarian forces of Louis II. It was made by Johann Schreier around 1555.

Enjoy!Gassenhauer (ca 1715) - Fife & DrumJGBaroque2023-10-23 | This march is a little special: it is based on a manuscript written by the Swedish military oboist Gustaf Blidström in 1715, when he was a prisoner of war in Tobolsk, Russia. He was captured by the Russians in 1709 after the battle of Poltava, and spent many years as a prisoner of war. He later was set free and returned to Sweden, bringing this manuscript with him. As most of the marches in the manuscript only have the second part written out, one can only guess the melody. However, there are a lot of other tunes with both melody and second parts intact. Based on the structure of these other tunes, it is fairly possible to make a viable reconstruction of the original march.
What the original actually sounded like, we may never know, unless another manuscript shows up. This is thus my own interpretation. The drums and the lowest fife part are made to rhythmicize this march as I chose to set it in ca 60 bpm to reflect the slow marching tempo of the Russian army at the time.
The title "Gassenhauer", is German for "popular tune" (or literally "street howler"), and is likely something Blidström did not compose himself, but rather picked up from the streets of either Tobolsk, where he spent a lot of his time as a POW, or from some other Eastern European town during the long campaigns the Swedish army made during the first part of the Great Northern War.
The image shows the Battle of Poltava, where Peter I (in the middle) defeated the Swedish army under Charles XII, taking a lot of Swedish soldiers prisoner.

The fifes are based on an old arrangement from the 19th century, the drums are of my own making.

It was commissioned by Duke of Savoy, Vittorio Amadeo II in about 1685. Lully's original has three oboes, or "hautbois" as they were called in French, a bassoon, and drums. I felt it proper to add some more royal splendour, so I added three trumpets, kettledrums or timpani as they are also called, as well as fifes.

Enjoy!General Topps Dragoner March (ca 1715) - Fife & DrumJGBaroque2023-10-02 | This is a fife and drum arrangement I made of the less known Swedish march "General Topps [Taubes] Dragoner Mar[s]ch " ("March of General Taube's Dragoons"), which was notated by Gustaf Blidström, a Swedish army oboist, in around 1715 - it might have been composed by him as well, but that remains unverified. General Gustaf Adam Taube commanded a regiment of dragoons in the years 1704 to 1709, until the regiment was destroyed in the defeat at Poltava. The middle section has the original harmonization of Blidström, though overall the drums and the harmonizations are made by me, and it also features oboes, a common military instrument at the time.
The image depicts Swedish troops at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, where the Swedish army under Charles XII was defeated by the Russian forces of Tsar Peter I. The image is a detail from a much larger painting by the French early 18th century artist Louis Caravaque.
