In this case, I had plans to shoot my Leica 28mm Summicron on my Lumix S5 but quickly changed my mind and slapped on the 18/1.8 which I normally use for filming my videos. Which started as an experiment turned out much better than expected. Singapore has so many rules and regulations unlike any other place I've ever been to. Often, you could get a massive fine for things that seem normal and pretty harmless. It's not a surprise that there is lots of them in Bangkok since I did a similar tour a few years ago. However, this time I went to Mega Plaza where you find a bunch of shops at level 5. The amount of nice film cameras you can source there is astounding and easily rivals other cities in Asia like Singapore. I don't know why but these days I do enjoy shooting at night a lot. Maybe it's because of the Leica Q2 Monochrom and its insane low light performance or it's the fact that in these tropical environments it's easier to shoot at night with no harsh sunlight and less heat? Whatever it is, here is another episode shot at night. The second part of the video was filmed a day later after the meet-up we had in Singapore. It's been a while since I had to laugh that much when filming a video. People sometimes do crazy things and it's nice to take advantage of it and create some funny photos. Especially when you have a whole series like this it could become a very strong body of work and a fun long term project if you have the opportunity to do that. That goes to show how easy it can be to come up with a project which gives your own photography a much stronger purpose than hunting for single images. Normally, I like to shoot by myself to be more focused but once in a while it's nice to shoot in a group and have a good time. Here I wanted to shoot my 28mm Summicron on a digital camera since I usually only shoot it on my Leica M6. With a small adapter I mounted it to my Lumix S5 and that seems to be a good fit. I wanted to try out some films that I hadn't shot before and especially this crazy old Fujichrome 400D slide film. So, I asked some friends if they want to join me and to have a fun afternoon in Berlin. The Fujichrome turned out very unexpected but I am liking the results. It's definitely very different from any film you can buy. We also shot some Kodak Portra 800 and that is such a lovely film. It's much easier if you are looking for a 35 or 50mm lens. However, the TT Artisan 28/5.6 is one of the rare cheaper alternatives and if you are shooting primarily in bright conditions the f/5.6 aperture won't really hold you back. It was recorded in the beginning of 2021 and back then I shot my Leica M6 with a 35mm Voigtländer Ultron f/1.7. The film that I shot that day was Fuji Superia 800 which unfortunately is no longer available. That's a shame because I really liked that film stock and the results it was giving me. But back then I had no time to shoot a video or take photos on film. However, I wanted to go back there after finishing my assignment and I did. But that meant to get up super early because it was a 30 minute drive and the sunrise was very early in the morning. After arriving I wasn’t very hopeful that the sunrise would be any good and even though my app told me differently it was overcast the whole time. Nevertheless, the scenery looked stunning and the sky was somewhat dramatic. Despite the lack of sun, the photos turned out great again. On this day I only shot Fujifilm stocks. My GF670 was loaded up with Pro400H and later with Acros 100 and in my Olympus OM2n was a roll of Venus 800. Developing and scanning was again done by Carmencita! Unfortunately though, the weather or more specifically the lighting wasn’t on my side and it was mostly overcast. However, the scenery was still lovely and after several attempts to see and capture a beautiful sunset it finally happened on top of a mountain again. This time it was the second highest peak which is almost as tall as Pico Ruivo. My Olympus OM2n was still loaded up with Kodak Portra 400 and in my Fujifilm GF670 I shot a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 and later some Portra 800. It’s not a place I usually go since there isn’t much going on in terms of street photography but since the landscape is so beautiful, I had the idea that I could try myself as a landscape photographer. I had two film camera with me and a bunch of film ready to be shot. In this case I loaded up some expired Kodak Portra 100T into my Fuji GF670 medium format camera and some Portra 400 into my Olympus OM2n. The expired film was overexposed by a couple of shots and it turned better than expected. Also the roll of Fujifilm Across 100 looks amazing. One reason is probably also the fact that Carmencita did such an amazing job developing and scanning my rolls. Well, let's find out how it would feel to shoot that camera. My Lumix S5 has a 65x24 crop mode which is the same aspect ratio the X-Pan shoots in. When opening the RAWs in Lightroom the crop will still be there but of course you could change that afterwards, which I didn't do in this video. It would be amazing if some camera brand would stick two 35mm sensors together and release that as a digital X-Pan. But I don't think that this will ever happen. That day I couldn’t find anything that I was interested in or the prices where too wild. However, a few days later I spotted a camera that I hadn’t seen in that shop before. The guy told me that it just came back from service and the camera comes with a 50mm f/1.8 and also a 28mm f/2.8. After trying out the camera I couldn’t resist and I pulled the trigger. The camera I am talking about is a Olympus OM2n in pristine condition. After buying the camera I put in some Portra 160 that the guy in the shop gifted me and I shot an episode. The video wasn’t planned but sometimes that’s the way it goes. As always, processing and scanning was done by my favorite lab Carmencita and they did a terrific job. Maybe you remember the episode from last year where I was trying out the Fuji GA645 the first time. The camera is really nice but there is one thing I am not a fan of and that is the fact that by default the viewfinder is in vertical orientation. It's not an issue if you want to shoot portraits but since I mostly shoot horizontally I have to turn the camera all the time and that can get a little annoying. The film that I shot turned out much better than expected and I am very pleased with the scans that I got back from Carmencita. The city was very busy and we decided to also shoot at night and I recorded the session to share with you. Again, I used the Leica Q2 Monochrom with a Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4 filter because I really liked the results I was getting the other night. A friend recommended to give a Black Pro Mist a try and I did. After reviewing the results I can say that the Leica Q2 Monochrom with the Pro Mist is a great combo, especially when shot at night. I took out the Fuji X-E4 along with the Voigtländer 35mm f/1.2 to have some fun shooting. With a large aperture of 1.2 the lens is a very good choice to shoot in extremely dimly lit environments like I was on that night. Besides shooting some street I could also help out a local photographer who didn’t bring any lights for her shooting. She got lucky that I had an LED light in my camera bag and I assisted her for roughly 30 minutes before continuing to shoot. What a great night! The cities couldn't be more different and therefore it was a totally different experience. The lens mounted to the Fuji was the Voigtländer 21/1.8. It's a great lens even on an APSC camera but I wish it would be a little smaller. I probably need to get something else instead to make the whole set-up a little more compact. An orange filter can also deliver really nice results and it is cutting down one stop of light instead of the darker red filter that hovers around 3 stops. Here I wanted to try using an orange filter shooting at night to see if that makes sense. See for yourself it was worth it. This time I am shooting the Fuji with the Voigtländer 35/1.2 in Veracruz/Mexico at night. The city is located on the gulf cost and is not a place western tourist usually visit. While shooting the X-E4 I've noticed a weird issue the camera has. If 35mm would be my preferred focal length I would probably get my own copy of the lens. The Kodak VR400 looked ok but isn't a film stock that I'd rave about. Maybe it's because the film has expired a while ago but still it was nice to try it out and to see what it looks like. Yes, I had to get a 28mm lens for it and that's why I picked up a Pentax SMC-M 28mm f/2.8. The lens is really small and I would put in the Pancake category. I've read good things about it but I had to see myself if it is any good. I haven't shot it a lot but already I would absolutely recommend the lens to anyone who wants to shoot 28mm on a film camera and wants to keep the budget low. The camera and lens combo right now would only set you back roughly 100€ which is great for what you are getting. Film of choice was Fuji C200 which is a great film that used to be very cheap but is still one of the more affordable C41 color films.
