Triple-drafts are essentially when three full passenger train sets are connected together and operate as one train (normally not in revenue service). “Triple-draft” is not a common term, it is just simply a phrase based off of “double-draft,” which refers to when two trains are connected and operate together. Most of the trains in this video only existed because of very specific and unusual circumstances, such as part of a commuter rail line being closed down resulting in not enough equipment being in a certain place. I have done my absolute best to track down all of the triple-drafts the commuter rail system has seen in the past few years, and as far as I am aware, I have been successful with every single one. The wash train’s cars use extremely high powered power wash equipment to remove slippery leaf residue from the rails. This residue is known as slippery rail and is very dangerous for passenger trains, as it can extremely limit their traction. The MBTA has 4 separate wash train consists and this video follows the one that operated on the north side lines during the 2023 season (specifically to this video, the Newburyport/Rockport Line). All clips in the video were filmed in the towns of Beverly, Manchester, or Hamilton, MA. Please note that the thumbnail of this video features the same wash train consist that was seen in this video, but was taken by me on December 4, 2022 in Gloucester, MA, a scene that does not appear in this video. A few hours in the area brought several trains, such as Amtrak Lakeshore Limited 449 led by 40th anniversary locomotive 130 and 50th anniversary locomotive 46, MBTA’s “Readville Switcher” equipment move, and normal scheduled commuter trains. All trains are featured once, except the Readville switcher, which I chased into Cambridge along the Grand Junction running track (as seen in the last several clips featured in the video). The rest of the shots were taken at Boston University’s “School of Fine Arts,” just west of MBTA’s Lansdowne station.

I first caught up with them at the Wilmington station, with a nice hello from the crew. The next clips were filmed just south of downtown Lowell, near the CPF-BY interlocking, and show the process done in order to unload the rails from these flat cars. The rails were dropped next to the right of way, where they will eventually be used to replace old sections of rail. When all rails were unloaded, the train was reassembled and departed back for Boston. I caught up with them one more time at the North Billerica station, as seen in the last shot.

Two borrowed sets from the south side with complete double-decker coach consists were deployed for extra service to Salem and beyond, accommodating the many more people that were relying on rail transportation to Salem. The consist of this train was made up of Conway Scenic’s two Boston and Maine painted F-7s (4268 and 4266) ahead of 9 passenger cars, with GP38s 252 and 255 at the rear. I chased this train from the Conway, New Hampshire area all the way up into the White Mountains. Seen here are two clips of an Amtrak “Portland Extra” equipment move moving through Cambridge, MA. Led by P42DC 107, this train normally makes its way through Cambridge on the Grand Junction Running Track on random weeknights. As most crossings on this branch have no gates, drivers tend to push the limits if they believe they can make it. A personal recommendation from me: most trains will only take a few minutes (at the most) to pass through railroad crossings, and risking an accident with a train because of that small wait is never worth it. Stay safe out there folks.

MBTA’s work extra assisted with this work, as the commuter rail has multiple hopper cars equipped for dumping ballast on railroad right of ways. With work lasting all throughout the day, the work train’s original crew ran out of time on their shift. A recrew met the 2 locomotive, 7 car train at CPF-JK in Lawrence, and deadheaded the consist back to Sommerville. In this video, the recrewed work extra led by GP40MC 1116 is seen passing the Ballardvale station in Andover.

In preparation for damage that the outskirts of this storm would bring, the MBTA Commuter Rail had several trains ready with locomotives on the inbound ends of trains, instead of the usual position on the outbound end. Some train sets were flipped entirely, while other ones had additional locomotives added to the back of a consist that already had a locomotive on the outbound end. The purpose of having a locomotive on the inbound side of trains during storms is to catch debris that may be on the tracks, as hitting objects such as fallen trees with a locomotive is much safer for any occupants of the cab compared to if a cab car was leading (which are not built as strong and can be damaged easier). On most commuter rail lines, the first train of the day (in the early morning) is an inbound running towards Boston in the direction that a cab car normally leads. With several hours going by between the last train of the night and the first train of the next morning, all sorts of unknown debris and obstructions have the opportunity to gather on railroad right of ways in the dead of night. The extra safety for the crew and passengers by having a locomotive lead is something that the railroad takes seriously. I caught up with some of these trains in Beverly, Hamilton, and Ipswich, MA on the weekend that the storm was near. Trains included are a set with GP40MC 1126 facing inbound + cab car 1632 facing outbound, as well as an additional train with no cab car at all, but instead F40PH-3C 1056 on the outbound end and GP40MC 1120 on the inbound end.

This train stopped in several communities all over the north shore, and Operation Lifesaver personnel onboard presented rail safety information at all of their stops (all on the Newburyport/Rockport Line). I was able to capture this train between stops, as seen in Beverly and Hamilton, MA, in this video.
A Long MBTA Commuter Rail Extra + Amtrak’s New Phase IV Heritage Unit in the Boston Area - 9/17/2023 Rail Spike Productions 2023-12-31 | Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy the video. If you are interested in more content from me, my photography can be viewed on Instagram at: instagram.com/rail_spike_productionsAbout this video: The first and second clips in this video show an MBTA “Middleboro Extra” equipment move on their way out to shuffle equipment from the Readville yard in Boston to the Middleboro facility. Included is GP40MC 1131 going out to Rochester, MA to be rebuilt, as well as some coaches that needed repairs or were going into long term storage. The first shot was taken at the Fairmount commuter rail station in Boston and the second shot was taken at the Randolph/Holbrook commuter rail station. The third and final shot features Amtrak 449 the “Lakeshore Limited” on their way out of Boston with phase IV heritage locomotive 164 as the second engine. This locomotive was recently repainted into this classic scheme as a replacement for locomotive 184 (which used to wear the phase IV heritage scheme) that had recently been repainted into the phase V paint scheme, the paint scheme that most of Amtrak’s P42DCs wear today.

If you are interested in more content from me, my photography can be viewed on Instagram at: instagram.com/rail_spike_productionsAbout this video: As a result of a powerful storm system that moved through Massachusetts on September 8, train traffic was halted in many areas, including in Lawrence on the Haverhill Line after debris fell and blocked the right of way. With the line not opening until the following day, no trains were able to be put away on Friday night in the Bradford layover yard in Haverhill which needed 3 train sets to be available for Monday morning commuter traffic, as required by the schedule at the time. MBTA’s solution was to send all 3 of these needed trains out to Bradford on one consist, which was addressed as a “triple-draft” equipment move. With a friend of mine at the throttle of this equipment move, F40PH-3C 1026 powered this massive 16 car/3 locomotive train up the Lowell line to Wilmington, where it then took the wildcat branch and connected to the Haverhill line. I caught up with this train at the Anderson/Woburn and Andover stations, and eventually the Bradford station where I filmed the train being disassembled and put away in the layover yard adjacent to the platform.

If you are interested in more content from me, my photography can be viewed on Instagram at: instagram.com/rail_spike_productionsAbout this video: As a part of MBTA’s “Commuter Rail Safety and Resiliency Program,” a project was approved that involved moving trackside PTC (Positive Train Control) wires that were located next to the tracks above the ground to beneath the ground on all North Side lines. This work is best done with specific rail equipment that digs small trenches next to the right of way, as well as buries the cables into these trenches. PNLX (Precision Locomotive Leasing) 2107, 9619, and 4043, as well as three MPCX rail cars were leased by the MBTA to complete this job. The first route to receive this work was the Fitchburg Line, which is where all clips in this video were filmed. The first two clips were shot in Concord, MA on August 2, 2023, and show the two PNLX locomotives as their in-cab equipment was being tested on an extra run between the Littleton and Lincoln stations. The remainder of the clips featured were shot on August 21, and show the train performing its work in Acton, MA, as well as the equipment deadheading back to where the train was stored at the time (on a siding in Littleton). The train is only authorized to move at no faster than 2 mph while working, due to the equipment that digs trenches next to the rail bed. When not performing work, the equipment is able to travel at the maximum authorized speed for freight trains wherever it may be at the time.

If you are interested in more content from me, my photography can be viewed on Instagram at: instagram.com/rail_spike_productionsAbout this video: On August 31, 2023 in Salem and Peabody, MA, the final empty freight car (OLNX 3401 sandwiched between two spacer cars) was taken from the last remaining industry that was served freight cars in Peabody on the Danvers Branch. The industry in question, Rousselot, is set to shut down by the end of 2023, with freight service stopping a few months prior when the last empty car gets removed. This move happened to occur on the last day of August, as shown in this video. With no more industries that receive freight cars in the area, the line would no longer see any more railroad operations after the MEC 516-led 3 car train went by. Conductor Connor and engineer Chris were the crew on this train, and as a nice touch, two signs indicating this historic event were made and put onto the locomotive. I have had the pleasure of filming many clips of this train and getting them posted onto my channel throughout the years, so I’m honored to have been able to capture this final journey, ending a long and eventful history of freight on the North Shore of Boston.

With a final destination of Chicago, IL, P42DCs 110 and 160 hauled Lakeshore Limited train 449 out of Boston right on time. With no ACSES PTC, Amtrak’s 50th anniversary P42DC number 160 in the classic “Pepsi Can” paint scheme is unable to lead in the Boston area, so sightings of it in these parts are quite uncommon. All shots in this video were taken at the Back Bay station on the Worcester line platform (tracks 5 and 7).

The first clip is of an Amtrak “Portland extra” equipment move heading towards Boston. The second clip shows CSX manifest freight train M427 (Portland, ME to Selkirk, NY) with a mighty 7 locomotives at the head end. The lead locomotive on M427 is one of only a few of its kind on CSX, that being an SD40E3 (number 1712). Trailing behind it was some classic CSX and ex-Pan Am Railways power, followed by nearly 100 cars.

Highlights of the evening include several meets between two or three moving trains, some classic power and equipment, and a 5 hour late VIA Rail “Canadian” (with 21 cars) shoving towards the VIA maintenance facility just west of Toronto. Riding the train from its origin to its destination tends to take just under 100 hours. The first clip in this video was taken between GO Transit’s Exhibition and Mimico stations (just west of downtown Toronto), and is of the eastbound trip (VIA train number 2) shoving to VIA Rail’s maintenance facility just after arriving in Toronto about 5 hours late on 8/11/2023. The other two clips were filmed on 8/13/2023, and are of the westbound Canadian (VIA train number 1) deadheading to Toronto Union Station (at Mimico station), then departing Toronto and starting their 4 day long journey, as seen from just north of downtown.

One of very few railroad crossings near downtown Toronto, Osler Street is an unusual location as there are no GO or VIA Rail routes that pass directly through the crossing. It is a good location to find freight trains, but traffic can be inconsistent and hard to predict as with any other rail freight traffic routes.

Freight Locomotives Leading a Passenger Train: Amtrak Train 63 in Syracuse, NY Rail Spike Productions 2023-10-16 | Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy the video. If you are interested in more content from me, my photography can be viewed on Instagram at: instagram.com/rail_spike_productionsAbout this video: On the morning of August 4, 2023, westbound CSX Manifest M363 derailed near the town of Amsterdam, NY, resulting in both of the 2 mainline tracks being completely obstructed. The derailment caused an immediate halt of all traffic in both directions for over 24 hours, as there was no other way to get by. The cleanup crews did an excellent job getting the line back open ASAP, but prior to the line reopening, effects of the derailment could be seen hundreds of miles away in both directions, like the unusual move seen in this video. Amtrak’s Maple Leaf (train 63 or P063) coming from New York City’s Penn Station had no way of getting around the derailment site, meaning the train had to originate with a set of equipment already on the west side of the out of service track. With no Amtrak trains facing the correct way for operation west from Amsterdam’s Amtrak station, two CSX GE ES40DCs were tacked onto the back of a train and led it to Syracuse, where the Amtrak consist could then be flipped and continue its journey facing the normal way. The two locomotives added to the front of P063 happened to be the locomotives powering M363 at the time of its derailment earlier in the day, and since the derailment affected about 20 cars near the back of the train only, the locomotives were good to go. This unusual looking Amtrak train passed me in Kirkville and East Syracuse, NY in the late afternoon on 8/4/2023.

This video features clips from the last few times that I was able to capture the two MBB cab cars (1522 and 1530) that were operating during the summer. As of October 2023, it seems that these coaches have been permanently pulled out of service, but it wouldn’t be wise to say anything is definite just yet.

MBTA sent a rescue train out to pull the broken down train into Boston. After arriving in Boston, MBTA F40PH-3C 1028 was connected to the front of locomotive 88 and powered train 697 all the way into Maine. The 1028 was returned to the MBTA in Boston on Downeaster 692 the following day (July 30) after locomotive 88 was replaced by 89 on the same set of equipment. With stops in Wilmington, Framingham, and Wellesley (first 3 clips) on the way into town, I ended up in the vicinity of Readville. The following clips were shot at Fairmount, Hyde Park, and Readville stations. After an inbound Franklin train with HSP46 2002 broke down in Readville blocking several tracks of the Northeast Corridor, delays began to develop. The next few hours consisted of that train being rescued, as well as the clearing up of the rail traffic jam that this breakdown caused. The final 3 clips were shot in Wilmington, Woburn, and Haverhill on my way back out of town. Almost all clips in this video were filmed on this same day between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

If you are interested in more content from me, my photography can be viewed on Instagram at: instagram.com/rail_spike_productionsAbout this video: In May of 2023, the MBTA Commuter Rail released coach 236 fresh from the shops in a new wrap sponsored by Operation Lifesaver, an organization bringing attention to how important it is to be aware around the railroad tracks. Throughout late May and June 2023, I managed to get several shots of the coach’s first month in service with the new wrap. The coach was added to a set of equipment behind F40PH-3C 1025, which coincidentally had MBTA’s other Operation Lifesaver sponsored wrap on coach 535, which was done in early 2020. All videos were filmed on the Newburyport/Rockport line in Beverly, Hamilton, Gloucester, or Rockport, Massachusetts.
