Big Country One Great Thing guitar parts marshallheadkt66 2022-02-27 | A play through One Great Thing by Big Country.I used a live recording where the guitars were swapped from their usual sides, so Stuart Adamson’s parts are panned left/left hand video, and Bruce Watson’s are on the right.Effects wise, there’s a high octave effect throughout the Bruce parts except during the first half of each verse, and both guitars have reverb added at the desk, plus Bruce’s part has some delay.This live version has a double length solo, so you get to hear Stuart’s solo on its own first time, just as it appeared on The Seer album, then on the second run through it’s joined by Bruce’s high note licks which appear on the 7” single mix, albeit less prominent than on here.
Big Country Fields of Fire guitar tones recreated marshallheadkt66 2022-02-23 | An attempt to recreate the guitar tone from the Studio version of Fields of Fire. The guitar (Yamaha SG) was tuned up around 2.5 semitones, and had done tuning tricks like slightly flattening the 2nd string and careful fretting to get the major thirds in tune. Guitar sound was Line6 Gearbox, and there’s an MXR pitch transposer set to + 12.0 / mix at 40-50% and no regen on the high notes and the second run through the main riff. The original track is panned left, my guitar parts are to the right.

You can see the pitch transposer setting changes during the solos in the rack behind me (selected by footswitch).Short low feedback/high effect level delay with modulation from the Korg SDD2000 on the verses.No effects on the choruses.

I saw Big Country play this live a few times, and in this clip I’m playing along to one of those occasions - the December 1986 Ingliston Edinburgh gig.Bruce’s part (left side) was originally played on a mandolin, which I don’t have, so I used a regular guitar with a capo on the 3rd fret to get as close as I could. There’s a shallow flanger on the sound, plus delay and reverb.Stuart’s part was played on my Moon replica, bridge pickup with active mid boost all the way up. Big Country Fields of Fire riff marshallheadkt66 2020-04-07 | Fields of Fire by Big Country’s main riff is played on pairs of strings, one open, one fretted up on the 11th fret and beyond.Only problem is, the major thirds on a guitar are always a bit sharp (in standard tuning) no matter how good the intonation is on the guitar.Your challenge is to work out how to get them in tune, as shown in the video here.
