Intellectually honest people agree that the misuse of free will is the cause of suffering.The fundamental flaw in Epicurus' position is in falsely assuming that God could not have a good reason to allow evil and suffering to continue.Just because a father allows his child to suffer through a painful but life-saving surgery doesn't mean the father is unwilling or unable to prevent the surgery. The father may feel bad about the child's fear, crying, and tears up until the surgery, and the pain and discomfort suffered during the recovery period, but the father has greater insight than the child, knowing it is the right decision.It is better to have free will risking evil and suffering, rather than be robotic. Also, without free will, there could be no love: Because God's only motivation in all of his activities is love, the free will that he has given us, and the love that it makes possible, take precedence over any risks that free will makes possible. (Its risks are basically the unpleasant reactions to our own freely chosen bad decisions).Finally, God is not our servant -- we are his servants:He does indeed love us, but he also has no duties and no responsibilities.
