The Tragic Loss of Chef Johnny 2 Cellos 2024-12-22 | When thinking about South Park’s most iconic characters, it feels kind of bizarre to realize that one of THE most iconic hasn’t been on the show in EIGHTEEN years. While South Park made a huge splash with its irreverent humor, vulgarity and cheap animation, back in its early days, there were few characters more beloved than Isaac Hayes’ Chef. The soul singin’ mentor to the main 4 boys, Chef was effectively the primary adult character in the show AND the series’ voice of reason for a lot of its early run. That is, until a much publicized and contentious exit from the show in 2006 after South Park lampooned scientology. Despite this messy end for Chef, and later revelations about the nature of his exit, Chef is STILL one of the most important characters in the show’s history, and while they’ve managed to find new characters to elevate and new kinds of stories to tell, I think he has left an undeniable hole in the show that will never quite be filled. Written as a massive 200th episode celebration tying all of the show’s biggest episodes and stories together into a big event, 200 and 201 were sadly banned for the exact same reason as Super Best Friends and Cartoon Wars: either depicting, or discussing the ethics OF the depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad. In fact, 201 was censored even FURTHER, only aired one single time, and has never been officially released in its original form. Just an incredibly sad way to lose one of the biggest events in South Park history. Trying to Understand RICK AND MORTY THE ANIME Johnny 2 Cellos 2024-11-18 | Rick and Morty The Anime has come and gone, and the Rick and Morty fandom seems to have unilaterally met the entire thing with a resounding “why does this exist?” Personally, I was pretty curious to see what Rick and Morty might look like through the mind of a completely different creative from an entirely different culture, particularly because some of those previous Rick and Morty anime shorts were VERY cool. However, what we’ve ended up with, I think, was something far too ambitious for its own good and a bit too far removed from why people like the original Rick and Morty in the first place. That isn’t to say I thought it was all bad, there are some really interesting ideas within this project, but I do NOT think Adult Swim or the creatives behind the project did themselves any favors in how this story was presented to us. South Parks History of Presidential Parody Johnny 2 Cellos 2024-11-05 | Since South Park premiered in 1997, they’ve lampooned their fair share of presidents and presidential candidates. The show began during the Clinton administration and has survived to see at least 7 Presidential elections, and typically, they aren’t afraid to utilize these real life politicians in their narratives and satire. But this year, Matt and Trey have opted to skip the presidential election cycle entirely, and while there are many reasons they’re doing this, one that they’ve cited is that they’re just tired of covering Donald Trump in the show. This has caused A LOT of anger on both sides of the political aisle, with people claiming everything from lack of creativity, straight up cowardice or even deep state conspiracies as the culprit for this decision. Regular Sized Rudys GIANT Sized Video Johnny 2 Cellos 2024-10-15 | There are few characters on TV that I find more charming than Bob’s Burgers very own Regular Sized Rudy. And I don’t think I’m alone, Rudy seems to be a major fan favorite, and based on how frequently he’s utilized in the show, I think the writers love him as well. Rudy didn’t join the cast until late season 3, but he instantly made a huge impression, and has since appeared in over 50 episodes, winning the hearts of characters and fans alike. But I think most importantly, Rudy has facilitated some of the most beautiful and nuanced storytelling in the entire show, not just through exploring the difficulties of his own life, but through the ways he’s helped other characters learn and grow. The Simpsons Dropped a SURPRISE Series Finale Johnny 2 Cellos 2024-09-30 | For the Season 36 premiere, The Simpsons has done something unprecedented. They aired a SURPRISE series finale. Sort of. As somebody who grew up OBSESSED with The Simpsons, it’s cool to say that the show is going through something of a renaissance. Since Matt Selman took over as showrunner in season 33, the show has started to feel fresher and like it has a renewed energy, but I think beyond that, the thing that’s really made me excited about the show again is the ways it’s been willing to experiment. And tonights’ premiere, Bart’s Birthday, is the PERFECT example of that new energy that The Simpsons is bringing to the table, embracing the show’s obscenely long and storied history to throw itself a premature series finale event. BoJack Horseman vs Hollywood Abusers Johnny 2 Cellos 2024-08-10 | Hank After Dark is one of the most scathing criticisms of Hollywoo culture that BoJack Horseman has to offer. But I think even more impressively is that it does this through the lens of Diane, at a time in her story where she is struggling immensely to find purpose. Somehow the show manages to feel deeply realistic, while also acknowledging that it exists in a world filled with animal people. It’s nearly a contradiction. There is ONE wackier episode, however, that I see get more hate than any others, and THAT episode is Chickens. Season 2 episode 5’s Todd focused misadventure that does its damndest to explain how eating animals works in a world where animals are people. But WHY is Chickens so hated? Is it specifically the subject matter? Did the humor just miss the mark? Is it the wrong kind of deep for its audience? I have a lot of thoughts! Largely because there was a 1-2 punch when it came to these episodes. Yes, there’s the reason these episodes were all banned, the fact that they’re about the discussion and debate surrounding the depiction of Muhammad, but perhaps more impactfully, somehow, was that these episodes took direct aim at the popular animated series Family Guy, revealing Matt and Trey’s true feelings about their adult animation contemporaries. And Matt and Trey pulled NO punches, even writing fake Family Guy jokes and taking pretty direct aim at their writers in not just the episode, but in commentaries and interviews after the fact as well. One episode that shifted Randy from a pretty typical South Park citizen, into a prominent, goofy, overly obsessive oaf. That episode is, of course, The Losing Edge. The subject of dozens of YouTube videos and too many twitter threads to count, this character gets people HEATED. Which is surprising, Invincible is a series that features plenty of characters who LIVE in morally gray territory and some who are outright heinous in their actions. So why is the character who gets the MOST anger thrown her way… a teenage girl? Is that criticism warranted? While Amber certainly has flaws as a character, the hate thrown her way feels particularly disproportionate. As someone who has generally been pretty tired of superhero stuff recently, this series is such a breath of fresh air. A world that’s inspired by and pays homage to the comics that came before, while making a pointed effort to subvert expectations and more thoroughly explore the nuances of this kind of world. In both its world building AND in its character relationships. And I think one of the reasons Invincible manages to feel so fresh despite being so clearly inspired by other works is because it’s willing to really explore those gray areas. It’s not a show where everything or everyone is clearly good or clearly bad, good characters do bad things, bad characters do good things, and everyone has to reckon with the decisions they make, regardless of their intentions or motivations. Somehow they had managed to make an unbelievably authentic South Park experience in the form of a Role Playing Video Game. About 3 years later they followed it up with an even more robust sequel, The Fractured But Whole, delivering an elevated, more ambitious, and more cinematic experience than the first. So needless to say, after the announcement that another South Park game was in development, fan anticipation was HIGH. And in August 2023, South Park Snow Day was announced, which I would say was met with… mixed reactions. Whereas the previous games made you feel like you’ve been dropped into an episode of South Park, Snow Day looked to be an entirely different beast, abandoning the 2D paper cut out style of the show for a fully 3D action adventure co-op game. And now, a mere 7 months after that announcement, the game is here. So the question is, does it deliver a fun South Park experience, or is it too big of a departure after the previous entries were such adored extensions of the show itself?
