Due to excessive urban stormwater runoff discharged to the forest over several years, the site has experienced severe damage to its health and integrity, including massive erosion, sedimentation, and pollution.
Two interconnected 15' DoubleTrap underground vaults were installed at Hitchcock Woods to store and control the stormwater runoff.
The StormTrap basins provide approximately 25 acre-feet of stormwater storage within the Sand River watershed. Each basin was built with 368 and 902 precast concrete modular pieces, respectively.
The Sand River Stormwater BMP Implementation was complete by November 2022. At this time, this is the largest underground stormwater management system installed in South Carolina.
A passive park was built overtop these facilities as part of the site restoration serving as a new, grand entryway into the Hitchcock Woods.
Designed using computational fluid dynamics and validated through independent third-party testing, the system’s performance has been certified by leading industry authorities such as the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Deployed independently, or in a treatment train, StormSettler is a unique hydrodynamic separator that can meet your site's needs.
The device efficiently removes sediment and heavy debris with options for floatables including hydrocarbons. When water enters the unit, StormSettler components ensure that flow is effectively equalized throughout the inclined tube pack which provides a large surface area, small settling distances, and a controlled pathway for pollutants to be contained within the sump. The treated water is then directed around an outlet diverter before being discharged from the device.
StormSettler can accommodate a variety of applications and configurations such as online and offline use. During large storm events, the vertical baffle provides an internal bypass allowing peak flows to pass over the baffle, preventing hydraulic complications upstream. Negligible headloss and high pipe entry and exit enables the system to be used effectively in high groundwater areas as well as maximize the height and efficiency of downstream detention systems. The system is easy to inspect and can be safely maintained at the surface. It can also be equipped with remote monitoring technology, reducing the time and resources needed to inspect the device.
