You can see more of Matthew's work at his website frontlinefire.ca and he can be found on Twitter at @FrontlineFireGrain Settings in FilmConvert Nitrate for DaVinci ResolveFilmConvert and CineMatch2021-07-15 | Grain size represents the size of the film frame we’re emulating - 35mm film will have a very fine grain structure, while 8mm film, being smaller, will have larger, more prominent grain.
The curve you see is the natural response for the grain in your selected film stock - shadows start at the left, through to highlights at the right, just like a histogram. The default curve is native to the film stock, but you can adjust the appearance of the grain in the shadows, midtones and highlights just by clicking and dragging points in the curve.
The other film grain settings are available in the plugin settings.
Size is the size of the grain. Moving the slider to the right will increase the area of each grain particle.
Softness is softness, as you’d expect. Film is naturally softer than digital sensors, so when creating the film look this control allows you to soften your edges.
Strength is the overall amount of grain applied to your image. Move it to the right and you will get a strong grain effect, and taking it to the left takes away your grain all together.
Finally, there is grain saturation. All film grain has certain colour characteristics and you can use this slider to boost that colour or take it away completely and have monochrome grain on a colour image.Adjusting Your Grade in FilmConvert Nitrate for Adobe Premiere ProFilmConvert and CineMatch2021-07-14 | With your basic film emulation applied, you can now tweak your grade using the creative grading controls built into FilmConvert Nitrate.
The first set of controls we’ll look at are the color wheels. The color wheels will add a specific hue you select to a luminance range in your image - for instance, orange in the highlights, or blues in the shadows.
Below each color wheel are brightness controls for each area.
The behavior of the controls will change depending on whether you are using a log or non log profile. In Log, the controls are mapped to the Cineon Log curve.
Saturation in your image can be adjusted using the saturation slider.
Next, a new addition, is a custom curve control.
The curve works as a linear representation of the scene, the left bottom corner being the darkest area and the top right being the brightest.
The tool is broken up into 4 parts: luma, red, green and blue. Each can be manipulated independently with minimal effect on the others.Adjusting your grade in FilmConvert Nitrate for DaVinci ResolveFilmConvert and CineMatch2021-07-14 | With your basic film emulation applied, you can now tweak your grade using the creative grading controls built into FilmConvert.

With the Film Luma slider you can roll back the film stock curve to the original camera footage curve, without losing the film colours.
REC709 footage often has enough contrast already without the film stock, so use the Film Luma slider to back this off until you’re happy with it.
Film chroma works in the opposite way. With this slider you can roll back the film colours but keep the contrast of the selected film stock.Cineon Log mode in FilmConvert Nitrate for DaVinci ResolveFilmConvert and CineMatch2021-07-13 | If you shot in Log and chose a Log camera profile in the camera settings, you’ll see two controls for Film Color and Print Film Emulation.
Shooting in Log gives you more dynamic range in your footage, and it’s what we recommend if your camera is capable of it.
When you select a Log camera profile, like S-Log, V-Log, or BMD Film, Nitrate will convert the footage straight to the positive scan of your chosen film stock, to a gamma called Cineon Log, with a print film emulation added on top.
The print film emulation is what gives you the projected film look - what the footage would look like if it was projected in a movie theatre.
The Cineon to Print film slider allows you to adjust the strength of the print film application.
At 100, you’re getting the full projected film stock applied. At 0, you’re getting the Cineon Log film scan emulation, which will look similar to your camera’s Log footage, but still with the film stock colors applied.
You could then apply your own print film look over the top, or manually grade your way out of Log by adding your own contrast curve.
The Film Color slider allows you to select how much of the film stock color is applied to your footage. At 100, you have the full strength of the film stock emulation, but if that’s too intense for your liking, you can pull it back too.Primary color corrections in FilmConvert Nitrate for DaVinci ResolveFilmConvert and CineMatch2021-07-13 | Primary adjustments are often known as color correction - here, you’ll fix any issues in your footage before you get to the creative grading step.
For instance, you may have a shot that’s brighter than the other clips in the scene.
A change in the lighting might have affected your white balance, or you may have deliberately overexposed your shot to avoid noise while shooting in Log.
Nitrate provides three tools for making primary adjustments: exposure, white balance and tint.
The exposure slider in Nitrate is customized to the response curve of each camera and profile.
Adjusting the exposure slider by one increment is the equivalent of a stop in either direction.
You’ll find the Nitrate exposure correction gives a much more natural and intuitive response than the built-in exposure correctors in your editor.
The temperature and tint adjustments work the same way.Installing new camera packs in FilmConvert Nitrate for DaVinci ResolveFilmConvert and CineMatch2021-07-13 | If you get a message saying camera profile not installed, click the button to Download Profile.
