Book Review: Dragonfish (CC) Basking in Books 2019-07-11 | Hello, my name is Sarah and this is my book review of Dragonfish. A few thing is have changed since I filmed this review. I've changed my rating from three to four stars. I still would have preferred to hear Hoang's story from her instead of through Robert's eyes, but I thought that Vu Tran did a great job showing us Hoang in spite of Robert's prejudices. There are many more themes that I wish I could have discussed at length, but that would require spoilers. In a vague way, this is a true exploration of Hoang's struggle to be able to discover her self and to maintain her sense of self when she has identities imposed upon her. There are the identities she did not ask for prior arriving in north america, and there are the identities that were chosen for her in the states as well. Even the way the book is written centers her story around Robert, and does not her the chance to tell her story. It is frustrating to read, but it's important to remember that, while it is frustrating to read narratives like this, it is nothing compared to living this reality. Roberts exist, so as disgusted as I seem here, it's not as if Vu Tran made up such unlikable character. I believe it's important to acknowledge that fact and to get comfortable with being uncomfortable at the sight of certain truths.Corrections:Throughout this video I call Hoang by Stacy instead of Suzy. Suzy was the name given to her by Robert. The order of Hoang's husbands may also be incorrect, but I was trying to follow the order given to us at the start of the novel verse what we know by the end of the book."Contrary to all protestations, America is a nation not of immigrants but of refugees.
