Steaming took just 12 seconds, from 8ºC to 55ºC, and the foam quality was acceptable. I think we will can make steam even better, by fiddling about with the hole size on the steam wand tip and tinkering with the flow rate.
A few notes:
- I'm using a blue handle, just because it's what I had at hand. The correct portafilter handle will be white, like the other handle you can see on Bengle.
- this profile has a programmed preinfusion rate of 8ml/s, but on another profile, that asks for "max flow rate" I get a peak of 13 ml/s. Our DE1 maxes out in the 7 ml/s range, so this is a big improvement.
- this profile has an intentional pause right after preinfusion, which is why everything goes quiet. This lets the coffee "bloom" and is especially beneficial for light to medium light roasted beans.
- there are lots of little bugs! You might notice the oscillation on pressure, the chart data has some empty spots.
- the built in scale hardware is working, but I haven't yet had the time to program the app to use it, so I used our Half Decent Scale instead here.
- however, Bengle now works well enough to make really tasty drinks.
- and so we're finally getting close to being able to ship these out to customers.

- the shot mirror is optional
- internally, the "manifold" (how the water gets directed to where it should) is changing from a CNCed part that is not repairable, to a moulded part that can be repaired (ie, a bad valve can be swapped out). The benefits of this are lower cost. Also the flush valve has changed to "normally open" (currently it is "normally closed") which will help with longevity in café environments. The new "All in One" (AIO) manifold is backward compatible with all previous DE1 models, and will be what we use if we need to repair your machine.

Note that these new aesthetic parts (front panel and handles) are available to existing DE1 owners now, for purchase, if you prefer them to what you have now.
You'll need to open the group head cover when there is a GHC ghost tap issue.
The symptoms of the ghost tap can be
- The GHC repeats a function itself without a touch.
- Even if you tapped the stop button, it'll immediately start the function until you turn the machine off from the back switch.
What can cause the ghost tap issue is
1) EMI interference
- If there is a device that can cause EMI interference (i.e. LED bulb, refrigerator, microwave), turn it off and check if the symptom repeats
2) The GHC is wet (tapping the GHC with wet finger)
3) Group head internal leakage
- In case of internal leakage, you'll need to open the group head cover to check the source and replace the necessary part along with the GHC.

Steps to Make Scott Rao's Filter 3 Coffee
Preparation
Pour 22g of very coarsely ground coffee into the basket.
Give it a gentle shake to level the grounds.
Flush the group head (using the Decent “Dimples” shower screen, which has 50 small protrusions to ensure even water distribution).
Brewing Process
Latch the basket onto the machine.
Press the button to start the brew—everything else is fully automated.
The entire process takes ~4 minutes.
Optional Manual Check (At ~100 Seconds)
Remove the basket to check the slurry level:
Optimal grind: Slurry is ~50% up the basket.
Too coarse? Slurry is 60% or higher → use a slightly coarser grind next time.
Too fine? Slurry is below 40% → use a finer grind next time.
Filter 3 Profile Details
Pre-wet phase: 3:1 ratio (~66g water for 22g coffee).
30-second bloom follows pre-wet.
Slow-flow stages with gradually declining water temperature (to avoid over-extraction).
Expected Results
Extraction yield: ~22-23%.
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): 1.4-1.5%.
If too strong, dilute with 30-40g water after brewing.
Why Filter 3 is Great
Simple & consistent – just press a button.
Time-saving – ideal for events or roastery use.
Reliable – produces perfect filter coffee every time.
Filter3 baskets are available at Scott Rao's web store and at Decent Espresso's website.
You might need to do this if Decent comes out with a PCB upgrade that you want, or if you PCB fails for some other reason.
You'll need to clean the valve if
- The drain valve remains open during shots.
- The drain valve doesn't open when the shots end, causing pressure to stay trapped in the group head.
If cleaning doesn’t resolve the issue, the valve will need to be replaced.

The problems that John is trying to resolve are:
- after starting to make espresso, the barista notices that the espresso is not being completely captured by the cup, because the cup was not placed correctly. In moving the cup to the right position, they accidentally trigger an early “stop at weight” and the espresso is ruined.
- after starting to make espresso, the barista realizes they forgot to put the cup under the portafilter. They put the cup on, but it weighs so much more than an espresso, that the shot immediately has a “stop at weight” occur, ruining the espresso.
John demonstrated two new features, that are now available in the de1app:
- stop-at-weight now will ignore weight changes during preinfusion. The assumption is that preinfusion should never be enough to be considered a complete espresso (hence, the name “preinfusion” !). This feature fixes problem #1, so you can now move your cup around during preinfusion, even while using the stop-at-weight feature.
- profiles can now be set to “tare” (zero) the scale during their preinfusion cycle. If no espresso is expected to be dripping it out, then this lets the barista place the cup onto the scale, even after the START button has been pressed, and the cup weight be noticed and zeroed out. This feature fixes problem #2, where you forgot to put a cup on the scale and already started to make espresso.
In yesterday's Decent Factory Livestream Mark and John demonstrated three new apps for all Decent Scale owners: web weigh, QC weighing and the Dosing Assistant.
The apps all run inside the Chrome browser and work with the new Half Decent Scale, as well as the classic full-height Decent Scale.
There's nothing to install, and they automatically work in Android, Mac OSX, Windows and Linux.
It lets you:
Weigh several objects in a row
- Save each weight
- Show and save the rate of change (ie, flow rate)
- Export the results to CSV or JSON files
Here are some use cases:
- Imagine that you are making a coffee pour over, and want to see the total weight and flow rate.
- And perhaps you want the history to be saved, so you know what you did, when the taste is good.
- Or perhaps you're a cafe and you want to see how each of your employees makes hand-poured coffee.
- Or imagine that you're a restaurant and you need to weigh several pieces of fish. This will make that easy.
The QC app lets you weigh the same (or similar) object, very quickly, see which of those objects are within your stated tolerances, and keep a log of the whole thing.
Use cases:
- You are a cafe and want to quickly check that the pre-weight 18g doses of beans you have in front of you, really are 18g. And quickly reject those that are too far out.
- You are a food service that sells portions of cake, stated to be a certain weight. You want to make sure each slice is at least the stated weight, and reject those which are not.
- You are a restaurant, looking at preportioned fish. Each piece needs to be close to the same weight, so that each cooks in the same amount of time.
- You are buying a large quantity of the same object. For example, ceramic coffee cups. You want to quickly weigh all of them, to see which cups are much heavier than the others, and thus should either be rejected or sold at a discount for being less delicate than desired.
Some use of the dosing app:
You are a cafe and need to quickly weigh out 18g gram bean doses, and store them for later use.
You are a restaurant and need to cut and portion out meat in close-to-identical weights.
You are a manufacturer, and need to portion out, into packaging, the same amount of product.
You are able to specify the minimum and maximum allowed tolerances, as well as your goal weight. The entire thing is saved to CSV (and JSON) so you can have accurate records.
For a manufacturer or restaurant, where trading standards apply, the ability to audit and prove your portioning, might save you one day from a lawsuit that claims you are short changing people.

Your DE1 saves the rest of the information for you: the coffee profile that you chose, the pressure, flow, and temperature during the shot, and more. You can save this information locally on your DE1, but to get the most out of it, you can upload this information to an account on the Visualizer.coffee website ... where you can also download other user's shots to your DE1!! We'll show you how in this video.

This same modification will work on any grinder which has simple electronics: just an on/off switch, and also which doesn't grind too quickly.
In this demo, we ground 0.3g too much, and the next iteration of the scale firmware will plan for that slight delay between stopping the power to the grinder, and a bit more grounds coming out.
Note that we've also modified the Niche to use a hopper with a 3D print modification.
In this video, we've hooked up a 3rd party digital pressure sensor, to test and calibrate our device against.
Eventually, this will replace our Scace device. As well as being much lighter (and so needing much less heating, and thus testing temperature more accurately.) the output is digital (via USBC, bluetooth and wifi) and thus can be sent to a computer.
We've seen delivery companies treat packages this way, so we do too!
On my return to the office, I wanted to turn the idea into a real product. Ten months later, here we are. We've taken apart the flowjet that was previously needed, putting the needed components inside the box, and for safety, moving the power conversion to a DC converter at the plug. You can flip it over and look inside, for easy cleaning and maintenance (rinsers do clog, for example of you dump wet tea leaves in them =:-O ).
The design is finalized, parts are arriving almost daily, should be soon! We are assembling this ourselves.
Early in September we should start shipping this new product. To my knowledge, nobody has built anything like this yet. Rinsers in a metal box exist on Amazon, but without a pump and water connections included. Our packaging sample just arrived (using folded cardboard, no plastic).
Also, just FYI, because of our (bad) experience with the Decent Scale and our not being able to control (aka "fix") things that bugged us, we're no longer outsourcing product assembly to other companies. We're building an "Accessories assembly line" and we'll be building this rinser ourselves. Same goes for Tamper v6.1, and the Half Decent Scale, both coming later this year. All will be 100% Decently built.

Peak Coffee Experience: Café 3 1/2 in Shanghai
I was in Shanghai a few weeks ago, where I had the best milked drink of my life.
I want to tell you about it.
They only have two beans available, both roasted by Black Sheep. Very, very light roast: no flavors derived from roasting/caramelization came through.
You get two drinks when you order: the same bean as a milked drink, and also as nitro brew. There was a Sidama from Ethiopian (Anaerobic Natural) (USD$11) and a Catuai (Anaerobic Washed) from Huila, Columbia.
Here's the drink-making workflow:
- a preweighed, sealed dose is put into a metal basket and plunged into a liquid nitrogen bath
- The FM98mm grinder grinds the coffee
- The Barista Hustle Autocomb is used to prep the puck. Not sure what they tamped with.
- There are two DE1, each assigned to one type of bean, with its own profile.
- Foamed Milk at 50ºC comes a Linkbar. The milk is 4% fat Yoplait-brand, which they treated themselves for 48 hours with a lactose digesting enzyme.
- The nitro is served in a cocktail glass, the milked drink as a small flat white, on a piece of wood, with a preprinted info sheet.
The beans flavor profile comes through most strongly in the nitro brew, and is predominantly fruit. However, both beans blended nicely with milk, but the coffee was very much the foreground. It's not a heavy milk drink, but the foam quality of the Linkbar is impressive. The lower milk temperature likely helped preserve the fresh flavor of the milk foam.
Visually, we could be in Japan. Very minimalist decor. Each employee, moved with precision, making identical preparation moves to the others (obviously, highly trained).
This is the 2nd cafe by company. Their other one is OPS, down the street. There, you queue up outside, order one of five drinks. These were more "coffee cocktails", mixing in fruit infusions, caramel and other flavors, and was evidently very successful with the social-media crowd. A small standing space next door gives you a few minutes to drink, and then get out. For me, this was very much a successful business venture, managing to highly differentiate themselves, serving coffee until late at night, with a very photo-friendly product. I was impressed by the business acumen, but happy that I'd been to 3 1/2 first, as that's a proper coffee-lover's locale, whereas OPS is a bit more mass-appeal.
It's a great honor to me, that Decent was part of the 3 1/2 experience. I know many baristas have spoken of creating this sort of shrine to great coffee, and it was a thrill to see it done, and executed so well. We went 3 days in a row.
