G7 officials back Lebanon in Israel-Hezbollah conflict, reiterate calls for Gaza ceasefire

Global News 2024-10-19 | A joint statement read by Italy’s defence minister on Saturday expressed support for the Lebanese Armed Forces in “their essential and indispensable role for the protection, security and stability of Lebanon” amid Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hezbollah militants.

Reading the statement aloud during the annual G7 conference – held in Naples this year – Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said the sentiment was backed by all other G7 nations, too: the U.K., Canada, Germany, France, Japan and the U.S.

In Rome, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin echoed Crosetto’s words. “We would like to see Israel scale back on some of the strikes it is taking, especially in and around Beirut, and we would like to see things transition to some sort of negotiation that would allow civilians on both sides of the border to return to their homes,” he said.

The two leaders also reiterated calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, as Israel continues its war on Hamas one year on. “We strongly support the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of all hostages and a significant increase in the flow of humanitarian aid to assist the civilian population,” Crosetto said.

In a similar statement, British Prime Keir Starmer – speaking in Berlin – doubled down on his thoughts. “I say once again to Israel. The world will not tolerate any more excuses on humanitarian assistance, civilians in northern Gaza need food now,” the Labour Party leader said.

Brazen safe theft caught on video at Edmonton animal rescue: It’s devastating

Global News 2024-10-19 | Rescues in Alberta have been struggling for some time now amid a high level of animals coming into their care, and now one is also dealing with a brazen theft that was caught on video.

“The world is a little challenging for people right now and I think that in the nicest way I can put it — I think people are desperate,” said Leigh Melligan, Edmonton operations manager for the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society.

AARCS is based in Calgary but has a shelter in Edmonton. On Wednesday, it said a safe was stolen from its reception area around 6 p.m.

“It held over $1,000 in donations from generous supporters like you – funds that were meant to help animals in desperate need,” AARCS said in a Facebook post containing video of the theft.

Melligan said the safe contained about $1,200 in cash and cheques, along with some tablets, a POS machine, corporate credit card and other important business materials.

Drone launched at Netanyahu home in Israel as Iran says Sinwar death wont stop Axis of Resistance

Global News 2024-10-19 | A drone was launched towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the northern Israeli town of Caesarea on Saturday, his spokesperson said, adding that the prime minister was not in the vicinity and there were no casualties.

Earlier, the Israeli military said that a drone was launched from Lebanon and that it had hit a building. It was not immediately clear what the building was.

Two more drones that crossed into Israeli territory were intercepted, the military said.

There were no casualties reported, according to the Israeli ambulance service, and police said explosions had been heard in Caesarea, a coastal town where Netanyahu has a holiday home.

The drone attack was not immediately claimed by the Lebanese Iran-backed group Hezbollah, which has been trading fire with Israel since last October, or any other militant group.

Meanwhile, also on Saturday, the Islamic Republic of Iran broadcast delivered remarks written by the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, after Hamas confirmed the killing of their leader Yahya Sinwar.

BC crossbow killer handed 5-year prison sentence for 2022 murder of homeless camper

Global News 2024-10-19 | A B.C. man who used a crossbow in a killing in Langley two years ago has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Jason Robert William Griffiths was originally charged with second-degree murder in the March 29, 2022 killing of 29-year-old Nicholas Ball. At trial, Justice Michael Tammen found him guilty of the lesser offence of manslaughter.

The court heard that Ball was shot in the heart with a crossbow bolt following an argument with Griffiths, who was homeless and camping in a vacant lot.

At trial, the court heard Ball had sent Griffiths hostile and threatening texts before Griffiths shot him during a confrontation.

Justice Tammen rejected Griffiths’ argument the killing was in self-defence, ruling his actions weren’t reasonable.

Sikh community rallies at India’s Vancouver consulate amid foreign interference allegations

Global News 2024-10-19 | Members of Metro Vancouver’s Sikh community demonstrated outside the Indian consulate in Vancouver, B.C., on Friday, amid international tensions over allegations of Indian interference in Canada.

The demonstrators were marking 480 days since the murder of B.C. gurdwara president and Khalistan independence activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey.

Demonstrators called for the permanent closure of India’s consulates in Vancouver and Toronto, saying Canada’s expulsion of Indian diplomats was a “positive step” in protecting Canadian Sikhs.

But they said it was not sufficient, alleging India continues to operate networks in Canada from the consulates.

Whelan was convicted of espionage in a secret trial in Russia and sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2020. He has vehemently denied that he was a spy.

Cubas power grid fails, plunges country into darkness

Global News 2024-10-19 | Cuba plunged into a countrywide blackout on Friday, after one of the island’s major power plants failed and caused the national electrical grid to shut down, its energy ministry said.

The government had already closed schools and sent most state workers home in a last-ditch effort to keep the lights on during severe power shortages. But shortly before midday, the country’s largest and most efficient power plant went offline, prompting a total grid failure and leaving approximately 10 million people without power. Officials did not say what had caused the plant to fail.

"We are going through complicated times, every Cuban knows that. And well, I suppose the measures that have been taken are for our good but the people are feeling it,” said local resident Marcos Antonio Rosello. “But well, we are surviving and seeing what we have to face now."

The blackout marks a new low point on an island where life has become increasingly unbearable, with residents already suffering from shortages of food, fuel, water and medicine.

Sinwars death sparks protests and resistance across Jordan, Iran, and West Bank

Global News 2024-10-18 | Protests erupted in Jordan and Iran on Friday, following the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces earlier this week.

“They are delusional, those who think that when they kill one of the resistance leaders, or even when they kill the entire chain of command and control in the Palestinian, Lebanese or other resistance. They are delusional if they think that they are killing the spirit of resistance in us," said Rula Al-Hroub, a protester and the secretary-general of Jordan’s Labour Party.

In Tehran, Iranians also mourned his death, urging Hamas to quickly find a successor to continue their cause. Meanwhile, Palestinians in the West Bank referred to Sinwar as a "martyr," asserting that his assassination complicates the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Sinwar was known as the architect of Hamas' deadly Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which triggered the latest conflict in Gaza. According to the Israeli military, he was killed on Wednesday in a gunfight with Israeli forces after a year-long manhunt, and his death was announced on Thursday.

Liam Payne vigil: Fans of ‘One Direction’ emotional outside Buenos Aires hotel, central square

Global News 2024-10-18 | Fans of the boy band 'One Direction' sang and shed tears into early morning hours Friday, as they held vigil outside the Buenos Aires hotel where Liam Payne died on Wednesday.

Visiting a memorial that remained outside the hotel, one young fan said she was “still processing” the unexpected news of the singer’s death.

“I am still processing all the feelings I have about this. And only now can I come here, where everything happened, and it is now I finally accept the situation. The news was very shocking,” said Paula Goltzman.

Fans started gathering outside the hotel in Buenos Aires on Thursday and in the city’s main square to pay tribute to the 31-year-old singer.

Payne suffered multiple traumas and bleeding after falling from a Buenos Aires hotel balcony, and prosecutors said Thursday that drugs and alcohol were found inside the hotel room. Police said the room was found in “total disorder.”

“Personal loss”: Freeland respects decisions of cabinet ministers not running in next election

Global News 2024-10-18 | Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said in Winnipeg on Friday that the decision of federal cabinet ministers not to run in the next election was a “personal loss,” but that she respected each individual and their choice. Four more federal cabinet ministers have said they will not run in the next election, which is expected to prompt another cabinet shuffle in the coming weeks and is part of a growing exodus facing the Liberal Party.

“Every single one of my colleagues who's made the very difficult and serious decision not to run again is a person I really respect and is a person I have worked with very closely. So it's a personal loss for me,” Freeland said.

“It's a really personal choice to put your hand up to work hard to serve Canadians and I respect the decision of every single person who chooses to do that and I respect the decision of every single person who makes the decision to retire and step back from public life. But each of those ministers has my very deep gratitude.”

Asked about reports of a group of MPs formally asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down at a caucus meeting next week, Freeland said that “the Prime Minister has my full support as leader of our government, as leader of our party.” She also said, “Obviously, in our caucus — as in any caucus — there is going to be a wide range of views. I am absolutely confident that the vast majority of members of our caucus support the Prime Minister.”

“The Prime Minister is trying to distract from the fact that he has an ongoing revolt in his caucus looking to overthrow him. So it's no wonder why he's doing this,” alleged Conservative MP Raquel Dancho during the emergency meeting. She added “If he continues as a colleague sent to weaponize this, then he should release the names, because Canadians deserve to know who it is in Parliament right now… who has been undermining the national interest on purpose, to a to foreign country. They absolutely deserve to know that. And those individuals need to be held accountable.”

Meanwhile, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said she's read the un-redacted report and that naming the individuals would be "placing at risk the lives of our intelligence assets around the world." She added that "The semi-witting or witting category of MPs have not committed acts that fall into the category of proactive betrayal of their country's interests... I have been warned by people in our security establishment [names] must not be shared publicly."

"For the Sikh community, this is something they've been advocating for more than 40 years. And the allegations that were made by the RCMP on Monday were more of a vindication of what the advocacy has been going on for the last 40 years," said Conservative MP Jasraj Singh Hallan.

"It's the contention of the Conservative Party of Canada that we need to release all those names so that we can we can, take appropriate action and move on," said Conservative MP Dane Lloyd.

India clearly on notice after Canada expelled diplomats, Mélanie Joly says

Global News 2024-10-18 | Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly spoke at a news conference Friday morning in Montreal, taking questions on several topics including the recently-escalated diplomatic tensions between Canada and India.

In Joly's view, Canada's decision to expel multiple diplomats showed that India was "clearly on notice," and that there was "definitely a threat" which is why the RCMP recently made allegations of Indian government activity in Canada.

"We've never seen that in our history," Joly warned.

Bilateral relations between the two nations have plunged to a new low after Ottawa linked India to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada.

In tit-for-tat moves, both countries expelled each others’ diplomats on Monday. Ottawa said it was expelling six Indian diplomats and consular officials “in relation to a targeted campaign against Canadian citizens by agents linked to the government of India.”

British Columbia braces for 1st atmospheric river of the season

Global News 2024-10-18 | B.C.’s South Coast is set to experience the first significant rainfall of the season.

Global BC meteorologist Kristi Gordon said the atmospheric river is likely to arrive on Friday night and last until Sunday morning. However, not all areas will receive heavy rain the entire time.

Rainfall amounts could range from 80 to 175 millimetres across the North Shore mountains, with only 40 to 80 millimetres expected across southern regions of the Lower Mainland.

The atmospheric river’s projected strength, which is the amount of moisture and duration, could be between one and two on the impact scale, Gordon added. One means primarily beneficial while two means mostly beneficial but also hazardous.

“The timeline of the heaviest precipitation for each region is evolving. However, this is our most up-to-date timing,” Gordon explains.

BC police concerned about motorcycle riders tilting licence plates

Global News 2024-10-17 | Police in B.C. are expressing concern about an ongoing practice by some irresponsible motorbike riders to obscure their licence plates. The practice is called plate tilting, where the rider bends their plate to obscure it.

“People who do a lot of aftermarket modifications, are also often tied to really aggressive riding behaviour,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with the BC Highway Patrol said.

Video recently captured by Global News in Kelowna showed a motorcycle rider weaving through traffic and speeding along the highway with their licence plate tilted up and obscured.

Yahya Sinwar dead: Israel says DNA confirms Hamas leader’s death in Gaza

Born in a Gaza refugee camp, his family was among the more than 700,000 Palestinians displaced in the 1948 war that resulted in Israel’s independence. He was chosen as Hamas’s top leader in July after his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, was assassinated in an apparent Israeli strike on the Iranian capital.

Sinwar spent more than two decades in Israeli prisons and Israel has wanted him dead for years. But as Nathaniel Dove reports, this does not mean the war in Gaza is over.

France floods: Red alerts issued in several regions as floodwaters overcome city streets

Global News 2024-10-17 | Across southern France, six counties were placed under a “red alert” on Thursday amid “exceptional rain”, with some areas seeing as much as 630 millimetres in 48 hours, the French weather agency said.

The towns of Annonay and Labegude saw severe flooding and outside of Lyon, France’s third-largest city, cars were submerged by floodwaters. An alert was also issued in Cannes, famed for its iconic film festival.

Authorities closed roads and evacuated neighbourhoods in preparation for intense flooding and asked residents not to put themselves in danger by taking photos and videos. There were no reports of any injuries or deaths.

The flooding in southern France comes a week after remnants of Hurricane Kirk battered western Europe.

Liam Payne death: Argentina hotel called for urgent help for intoxicated guest, 911 call shows

Global News 2024-10-17 | Buenos Aires City Police released a 911 call made from CasaSur Hotel, where emergency medical and police assistance was requested on Wednesday shortly before English singer Liam Payne was found dead at the location.

Police said in a statement they had been called to the hotel after being notified of an "aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol."

When they arrived, the hotel manager reported he had heard a loud noise from the inner courtyard and the police found that a man had fallen from the balcony of his room, the statement said.

In the audio recording released by the police, a CasaSur Hotel employee can be heard asking for police help. "When he is conscious he is destroying the entire room... we need you to send someone," the worker said, adding that the guest's life was at risk because the room had a balcony.

Londoners were shocked by the death of the former "One Direction" singer.

“He was so young, I think 31 and I just turned 30 earlier in the year and I just feel like that's so young to just be gone,” Ali, a tourist from the United States, said. “I'm sure there's a lot of really sad girls in London today and across the world.”

"NATO is working with Ukraine, bringing you ever closer to the alliance," Secretary-General Mark Rutte said, adding it was essential that NATO continues to provide the country with military aid.

NATO members will not lose their shared will to support Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin would be wrong to think otherwise, Rutte said.

"Ukraine will be member of NATO, there is no doubt about it and until that happens we will make sure that Ukraine has everything it needs to prevail," he added.

Zelenskyy took his "victory plan" to European leaders and NATO in Brussels on Thursday, pitching for a NATO membership invitation and a major increase in military support for Kyiv's campaign against Russia's invasion.

CRA fires 330 employees for inappropriately claiming CERB

Global News 2024-10-17 | The Canada Revenue Agency provided a final update in its investigation into how many employees inappropriately applied for and received payments of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the CRA, a total of 330 employees have been let go following the investigation, with another 40 seeing disciplinary actions like suspensions.

Global News 2024-10-17 | Former "One Direction" singer Liam Payne, 31, was found dead after a fall from a 3rd floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

"He had checked into this CasaSur hotel a couple days ago, he had been on vacation in Argentina with his girlfriend, but for whatever reason she left the country and he stayed behind. There are conflicting reports about what happened. Apparently, he was in the lobby acting erratically and he smashed a laptop. And I've seen reports saying that he had to be carried back to his room," said music commentator and the host of "The Ongoing History of New Music" Alan Cross.

Hotel staff made a 911 call to police to report the behaviour and said they were "concerned about this guest and they were especially concerned that he was on the third floor with a balcony and they were concerned about what might happen," Cross added.

Police said in a statement they had been called to the hotel after being notified of an "aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol."

Missing BC woman likely victim of foul play, police say

Global News 2024-10-17 | Mounties say it is unlikely a woman reported missing on Vancouver Island two years ago will be found alive, but they are turning to the public again as their search continues.

Amber Manthorne, 40, was reported missing on July 8, 2022, from her home on Central Lake Road in Port Alberni, B.C.

Port Alberni RCMP say a person of interest in her disappearance was found deceased last year in Merritt, B.C.

However, as Kylie Stanton reports, they are releasing information about him and his last known whereabouts to try and advance the investigation.

Folic acid could help decrease the risk of autism during pregnancy, says BC study

Global News 2024-10-17 | Folic acid may mitigate the association between lead exposure during pregnancy and autistic behaviours in children, a study out of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia has found.

Those who are trying to get pregnant are encouraged to take folic acid and continue taking it during pregnancy as it plays a key role in brain development and prevents neural tube defects.

According to the university, this is the first study to observe that adequate folic acid supplementation “may reduce the risk between gestational lead exposure and autism. It found that associations between blood lead levels and autistic-like behaviours in toddlers were stronger among pregnant women with less than 0.4 milligrams per day of folic acid supplementation.”

Trudeau tells inquiry he has names of Conservatives involved in foreign interference

Global News 2024-10-17 | Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has testified at a federal inquiry that he has the names of Conservative parliamentarians who are "engaged in" or are at "high risk" of foreign interference.

"I have directed Canada's spy service and others to try and inform the Conservative Party leader to be warned and armed,” Trudeau added, “to be able to make decisions that protect the integrity of that party—of its members—from attempts at foreign activities around foreign interference."

NDP and Saskatchewan Party leaders face off in debate ahead of Oct. 28 vote | FULL

Global News 2024-10-17 | Saskatchewan Party Leader Scott Moe and Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck faced off Wednesday night in a televised debate ahead of Election Day on Oct. 28.

Beck has spent much of the campaign focused on health care, and yesterday announced that if she becomes premier, she would hire 800 health-care workers in areas that need them most. She had previously announced that an NDP government would spend $1.1 billion on health care over four years.

Moe, meanwhile, has promised to broaden the health-care plan his government announced two years ago and said Tuesday he would continue withholding carbon levy payments to Ottawa on home heating.

Beck has said she is prepared to withhold carbon levy payments, too, but noted Moe hasn't gotten a better deal with the federal government on securing an alternative to a consumer-based carbon levy.
