While AI may not be on the brink of sentience quite yet, the technology is developing at breakneck speed -- so much so that a group of experts recently called for a pause on "giant AI experiments" until we collectively have a better idea of how to navigate potential risks as we take advantage of the benefits. And while technologies like ChatGPT may still be some way from human-level intelligence (or similar), the emerging risks are very real, and potentially catastrophic if they are not addressed effectively.
This video is intended to provide an initial introduction to some of the more prominent risks -- it doesn't use jargon and it intentionally draws on humor to help make the challenges here understandable and accessible. But this should not diminish the urgency of the challenges here, or the expertise underlying the ideas that are presented.
There is a growing urgency around the need to take a transdisciplinary approach to navigating the risks of AI, and one that draws on expertise from well beyond the confines of computer science and AI development. And while the ten risks may come across as simple in the video, they represent challenges that are stretching the understanding of some of the world's top experts, from technological dependency and job replacement, to algorithmic bias, value misalignment, and heuristic manipulation (the full list is below).

This video was produced in collaboration with Dr. Lisa Brosseau at the University of Minnesota, who has led research on the relative impacts of different mask-wearing scenarios.
NOTES
This Risk Bites video draws on research by Dr. Brosseau and others on how different masks extend the time before the risk of infection becomes substantial when two people are in close proximity, and one has COVID.
The research builds on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guideline of a 15 minute “window of safety” when in close proximity to someone with COVID and no masks are being worn. However, it is important to realize that, while this 15 minute guideline is useful, it is not based on scientifically sound data, and so is more of a suggestion than a hard and fast rule.
What is important though is how this “window of safety” increases with different mask wearing behavior.
In this video we don't explicitly address the widely-used K95 masks. These are not to be confused with NIOSH approved N95 respirators. However, they do provide higher filtration efficiency than surgical masks, and most KN95s allow a better seal to be achieved between the mask and the face, if worn correctly.
However, an important factor in mask leakage is how the mask is held on. Ear loops such as those found on many K95s do not ensure a good seal – as anyone who has struggled with their glasses fogging up while wearing one will know.
Masks that use multiple bands that go round the back of the head typically allow a better seal to be achieved.

This introduction to the aerosol science of filtration is relevant to workplace safety and public health, and is suitable for K-12 as well as college and professional audiences interested in how filters work.
It specifically addresses collection mechanisms of diffusion and impaction, and explains how filters efficiently collect very small and very large particles, but not necessarily those that are between 200 - 300 nanometers in diameter.

A flurry of recent headlines on pasta and weight loss might make you think it can. But looking at the research behind these headlines shows that the science of dieting with pasta is not as simple as it might seem.
The study was a meta analysis of research exploring associations between low glycemic index diets and health - many of which substitute carbohydrates like potato and rice with pasta. And while it suggested that a pasta-rich diet does not lead to weight increase, it failed to conclusively show a link between pasta and health.
Much of the problem was that the low glycemic diets in the study were designed to be healthy alternates to high glycemic index diets, and as such, would have been expected to confer health benefits irrespective of the presence of pasta.
What results is a Jeopardy-like approach to research, where researchers start with the desired answer (pasta is good for you in this case), and use available evidence to craft a question that gives them that answer.

So we thought we’d take look at some of the other highly improbable risks associated with your cup of joe.
We love a good cup of coffee at Risk Bites. So we were rather dismayed to discover that California judge William le Jeunesse has decided that coffee could cause cancer, and that under Proposition 65, warning labels need to be posted by companies.
The ruling is based on the presence of acrylamide – a chemical that’s formed as the coffee beans are roasted, and that’s listed as a probable carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC. Acrylamide is also found in many other foods, and is created when you fry foods.
The trouble is, the California decision is based hazard rather than risk -- it depends on the potential of this substance to harm you, not the probability of harm occurring. So it’s hard to know whether to expect Starbucks junkies to start keeling over in the street (probably not – actually, definitely not!), or whether your chances of winning the national lottery are actually marginally better than having a bad coffee experience.
And in the spirit of full disclosure, we’re still avid coffee drinkers at Risk Bites!

The question of self-driving car risk and safety was thrown into sharp relief on Sunday March 18, when Elaine Herzberg was knocked down and killed in the Arizona city of Tempe, by an Uber SUV operating in self-driving mode. _____ Professor Andrew Maynard is a scientist, author, and leading expert on risk and the ethical and socially responsible development and use of new technologies. He is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, serves as co-chair of the Institute for the Advancement of Nutrition and Food Science (IAFNS) Board of Trustees, is a member of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research President’s Research Council, has served on a number of National Academies of Sciences committees, and has testified before congressional committees on several occasions.
As well as producing Risk Bites, Andrew’s work has appeared in publications ranging from The Washington Post and Scientific American, to Slate, Salon, and OneZero. He co-hosts the podcasts Mission: Interplanetary and Future Rising, and is the author of the books Films from the Future: The Technology and Morality of Sci-Fi Movies, and Future Rising: A Journey from the Past to the Edge of Tomorrow.
Andrew received his PhD in aerosol dynamics from the University of Cambridge in 1993, and is currently a professor in the Arizona State University School for the Future of Innovation in Society, and an Associate Dean in the ASU College of Global Futures.

Although we're exposed to ionizing radiation all the time, high levels can cause illness, disease, and even death. Yet working out how much radiation leads to specific health outcomes is complicated by the fact that different types and sources of radiation vary in their ability to cause damage, and where in the body exposure occurs makes a difference.
To get around this, the Sievert was developed as a measure of biologically relevant dose - a measure of how much harm ionizing radiation might cause. It combines the amount and energy of the radiation, with the type of radiation, and the body tissues exposed, to come up with a way of estimating risk, and carrying out risk assessments.

Risk Bites takes a look at where these millimeter-sized plastic beads are used, and why experts are becoming increasingly concerned about the potential environmental and health impacts of these and other microplastics.
The concentration estimate of microbead-related polyethylene in Lake Ontario was based on the following:
A concentration of 1,000,000 beads per square km in Lake Ontario were measured (Sherri Mason, personal communication), sampling to a depth of 16 cm. This is equivalent to 6.25 beads per cubic meter of surface water, or one bead per 44 gallons of water. Assuming a bead volume of 1 cubic millimeter and the beads are made of polyethylene, this is the equivalent of 6.25 parts per billion (PPB) polyethylene.
ABSORBED TOXINS
Microbeads and microplastics more generally can absorb toxic organic chemicals from the environment, including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and dioxins. For comparison, the US Environmental Protection Agency's Maximum Contaminant Levels in drinking water for PAHs is 0.2 PPB, and for dioxins it's 0.00003 PPB.
MICROPLASTICS
Microbeads are a part of a much larger environmental issue – microplastics. These millimeter-sized shreds of plastic result from the gradual degradation of plastic goods that find their way into the environment. They persist of a long time in water systems and other areas, absorb toxic chemicals and are taken up and concentrated by organisms. Where these fine particles of plastic are shaped like long fibers or flat plates, their high surface area and shape potentially leads to even greater environmental impacts than microbeads.

Only a small fraction of the thousands of chemicals in use today have been thoroughly tested for safety. Part of the problem is that how we test chemicals now is slow, expensive, and relies an awful lot on animal testing. However, a new approach is being developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institutes of Health, and the Food and Drug Administration. It's known as TOX21.
Using innovative techniques such as high throughput screening and computational biology, TOX21 a first step toward revolutionizing how we ensure the safety of the substances we use and carry out risk assessments.
