3 Ancient Tombs Archaeologists Cant Find
updated
In honour of the festive spirit, let's gather 'round the fire and share a ghost story from ancient Rome about a haunted house in Athens.
During the Victorian era, Christmas was a time for families and close acquaintances to gather around the hearth and tell stories. Ghost stories were popular and very fitting for the scenario as they provided an exciting, dangerous contrast to the warmth and safety that they would have felt in their homes. There’s something about colder weather that just makes us as humans extra appreciative of our cosy dwellings.
Charles Dickens was the real OG in making Christmas ghost stories a staple in Victorian homes thanks to his classic “A Christmas Carol”.

What if I told you the Statue of Liberty was built to imitate a wonder of the ancient world?
The colossus is the wonder of the ancient world that we know the least about. We don’t know where it stood, or what it looked like, but by using ancient sources, we HAVE been able to come up with some educated guesses.
We know for certain that the sculptor who created the Colossus was Chares of Lindos and it was built between 294 and 282 BCE. He did such a monumental job, that the term colossus, which was originally just a word for any statue or statuette, came to be used only for gigantic statues.

The figurines date to around 1600 BCE. There has been some debate as to whether they are truly snake goddesses or deities, but while the statuette's true function is somewhat unclear, the exposed and amplified chest suggest some sort of fertility figure.

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Peter A. Clayton amzn.to/3ljtjS4
By ancient standards, this tomb was so large and lavishly decorated that it quickly made it onto ancient writer’s lists of the seven sights to be seen in their known world, and it’s because of Maussollos’ tomb’s popularity that by the time the Romans showed up to the party, the word Mausoleum had become the go-to word for any large tomb.
It’s possible that Maussollos wanted his mausoleum to symbolise a fusion of all the surrounding civilisations and cultures, maybe even in the hopes of establishing a Carian empire with Halicarnassus at its centre. While that didn’t happen, he did succeed in creating one of the greatest-known tombs of the ancient world, and one of the longest-surviving wonders of the ancient world.

The oldest evidence we have of preserved tattoos on human skin is from 5200 years ago on Ötzi the Iceman, who lived during the Copper Age sometime between 3350-3100 BCE. I’m planning a whole video on Ötzi himself in the future, but for context, Ötzi was discovered by hikers in 1991 in the Ötztal Alps along the border between Austria and Italy. Ötzi has a total of 61 tattoos scattered across his back, legs, arm and chest. Most are clusters lines, apart from crosses located on the back of his right knee and his right ankle.
Before Otzi was declared the oldest person known to have tattoos, the mummified remains of a man belonging to the South American Chinchorro culture who had a thin moustache-type tattoo on his upper lip was another candidate for this top spot. The Chinchorro culture was a fishing society that existed before the invention of pottery in what is today the coastal regions of Chile and southern Peru between around 7000 and 1100 BCE. The Chinchorro people also practised deliberate mummification very early - because you can have both deliberate and natural mummification happen all over the world, and they are actually the oldest known human mummies to date!

In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, they embark on a quest for the missing pieces of the Antikythera Mechanism. They also say it was built by Archimedes during the time of the Battle of Syracuse around 212 BCE, and that it has powers to travel through time. Reality? I think not!
This is the real story of the Antikythera Mechanism. The first underwater archaeological investigation, the oldest known analogue computer and the only scientific instrument that has survived from the Hellenistic era.

Astronomical Calculator by T. Freeth, Y. Bitsakis, X. Moussas, et al. Nature, Volume 444, Issue 7119, pp. 587-591 (2006).
The Antikythera mechanism was an astronomical calculating machine, where you can set a date via the calendars, and it will then show you where all the planets would be, the orbit and phases of the moon, and the eclipse cycle. When the mechanism was first identified, the initial belief was that it was used for navigation, especially because it was found on a ship. Another theory is that the device was made for demonstrative or teaching purposes, not for astronomers who would have needed a much more precise machine to calculate fractions of days and more minute occurrences such as the varying lengths of days and nights.
The very existence of the Antikythera Mechanism proves that the ancient Greeks had a deeper understanding and mastery of astronomy than we could have possibly imagined. A knowledge that rivalled science that was being conducted in the 16th century Even scholars who spent their lives studying it have stated that it’s a level of technology that in their mind, couldn’t have existed. But yet, here it is, and verified to have been made within the Hellenistic age.

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Peter A. Clayton amzn.to/3ljtjS4
The temple of Artemis, also known as the Temple of Diana because the Romans liked to take the Greek Gods and just change their names for their own religion, AND also known as the Artemision which sounds like the coolest transformer of the bunch, was located in the Ephesus, near the modern town of Selcuk in present day Turkiye. Archaeological evidence shows that there were not 1, not 2, but 3 different temples built on this site, as early as the Bronze age around the 8th century BCE, with the final one being destroyed for good in 401 CE. So we’ve got over 1,000 years of worship going on at this one place.

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Peter A. Clayton amzn.to/3ljtjS4
Strabo, who lived in the 1st century wrote:
The statue is made of ivory and it is of such size that although the temple itself is very large, the sculptor may be criticised for not having appreciated the correct proportions. He has shown Zeus seated, but with the head almost touching the ceiling, so that we have the impression that if Zeus moved to stand up, he would unroof the temple.
Pausanias, who was a geographer and writer in the 2nd century CE, gave us quite the vivid description of what the statue looked like. He wrote:
On his head lies a sculpted wreath of olive sprays. On his right hand he holds a figure of Victory made from ivory and gold… In his left hand the god holds his sceptre inlaid with every kind of metal, and the bird perched on the sceptre is an eagle. The sandals of the god are made of gold, as is his robe, and his garments are carved with animals and with lily flowers. The throne is decorated with gold and with precious stones, with ebony and with ivory.
Zeus rested his very fancy gold-gilded feet on a footstool that was decorated with a relief of an Amazonachy - which is a mythological battle between the Greeks and the Amazons.
The Throne that Zeus sat on was also extensively decorated, with sphinxes, more winged figures of victory, and a scene of the gods Apollo and Artemis shooting down all of Niobe’s children.- Another greek myth that I think is supposed to teach you not to brag about being super fertile and having lots of children to a goddess who only had two of them.
Pheidias also included another scene… one of Pantarkes who was the winner of the boy’s wrestling event at the 86th Olympiad… who was said to have been Pheidias’ lover! Oh damn, we love a good hidden love story captured forever in stone. He apparently also carved Pantarkes is Beautiful into Zeus’ little finger.

Despite all the excavating and research done, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon have never been identified, and their actual existence has never actually been proven. As a consolation, even if the gardens never existed, we do know that the city walls of Babylon did, and they still do today in some sense. And if we’re taking other ancient lists of the seven wonders into account, like Strabo’s then no matter what, Babylon can safely stay on the permanent list!

But have you heard about the Dream Stele?! It's one of the oldest recorded restoration projects and involves a dream, a prophecy, and maybe even a seizing of the throne of Egypt.
Comment below whether you think Thutmose IV really had the dream, or it was a political move to justify his claim to the throne 🤔

What's the history of Valentine's Day? Does Valentine's Day have a pagan origin?
Lupercalia is one of the most ancient Roman festivals which was held every year between the 13th and 15th of February. It was a pastoral festival observed to purify the city and promote health and fertility. The Lupercalia may be the longest-lasting of the Roman pagan festivals, with it possibly starting at the time of the founding of Rome (traditionally 753 B.C.) or even before and ending about 1200 years later, at the end of the 5th century A.D., at least in the West, although it continued in the East for another few centuries.
The festival itself may actually be a more ancient import, coming from Greek Arcadia and honouring Lycaean Pan, which is the equivalent to the Roman Inuus or Faunus. Lycaean is a word connected with the Greek for 'wolf' as seen in the term lycanthropy for 'werewolf'…. So there may be a possible connection here. There’s also the Roman writer Justin who describes a cult image of the “Lycean God, who the Greeks call Pan and the Romans Lupercus”, as nude except for a goatskin girdle… bold fashion choice, I love it. But… despite Justin’s writing, no deity named Lupercus has ever been identified, so that’s a fun little mystery.
