Only the first movement is complete. The piece is written in memory of my black lab, KC, who passed away in the summer of 2020.The Sonata’s various themes represent the playful and hyper nature of young dogs. It contains musical descriptions of running, bouncing, stomping, sneaking, and of course chasing. These appear as sudden dynamic attacks with soft, light sections in between.KC was a member of my family for 17 years, and he remains in my earliest childhood memories. This piece is a celebration of the best of those memories, and of all dearly missed dogs. Concerto in E flat major for alto saxophoneAlexander Glazunov composed his Concerto in E-flat Major for Alto Saxophone and string orchestra in 1934. German saxophonist Sigurd Raschèr, upon hearing Glazunov’s Quartet for Saxophones, requested Glazunov to compose the concerto. Raschèr premiered the work in Nyköping, Sweden, on November 25, 1934, with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra.The work, unlike most concertos, is one continuous movement with many unexpected twists, but in a typical fast-slow-fast form. It is one of Glazunov’s last works, and it is an exceptional accomplishment in thematic unity and melodic invention.Glazunov was a leading Russian romantic composer in the generation after Tchaikovsky. Due to the Soviet Union’s persecution of artists and musicians, he settled in Paris, but not before restlessly travelling the world. The opening theme of this work is said to express his homesickness and longing for better days.WaveWave is a laidback jazz standard by Brazilian bossa nova musician Antônio Carlos Jobim, released on the 1967 album of the same name. Jobim is known for merging bossa nova with American jazz, making it an internationally recognized style. This tune was originally recorded with piano, guitar, strings, trombone, flute, and drums. The tune has been recorded by many other artists, including saxophonist Paul Desmond, and singer Frank Sinatra.TristeAnother standard from the Wave album by Jobim, this tune is faster than Wave, but similar in its bossa nova style. Triste is regarded, along with Wave, as a classic standard from the Wave album.

Glazunov was one of many composers who left Russia because of the Soviets, and his homesickness and longing for the "good old days" is expressed in these melodies.Enjoy this college sax studio recital performance! -ColeThe Concerto in E flat major for alto saxophone and string orchestra, Op. 109, was written by Alexander Glazunov in 1934. It is deeply rooted in Romanticism, and has entered the standard saxophone repertoire.Although invented in the early 1840s, the saxophone was still fairly new and unfamiliar in Glazunov's day; it remained untouched for a long time as it was considered "middle class". However, Glazunov was enthralled by the sound of the saxophone: a new timbre in the musical world.The work premiered in Nyköping, Sweden, on 25 November 1934, with Sigurd Raschèr, a famous German saxophonist, as soloist. It is Raschèr who is credited for bringing about the concerto's composition. Most of the synth sounds were made using cow sounds processed by Alchemy's granular synth. The first track includes sampled speech from a demo of the Garland grills that Chick-Fil-A uses.
