I recently found out it is only one of five known Sullivan engines to still exist. The known engines are the two triple expansion engines in the museum ship USCG buoy tender "Lilac" in New York http://www.lilacpreservationproject.org , the triple expansion engine of the buoy tender "Oak" (along with the rest of her engine room) in the US Smithsonian Museum of Transportation https://americanhistory.si.edu/on-the-water/inland-waterways/waterway-perils/tending-waterways , the triple expansion engines of the steam yacht Cangarda https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LlzBeHplwHM , and this one the smallest of the known engines. With the exception of the mirrored twin triples in the "Lilac" all of these engines are very different from one another in configuration, size, and valve gear. The only real similarities being they were three-cylinder, three-crank triple expansion engines.

Liberty Ship Jeremiah O'Brien is One of only two operating Liberty ships in the world out of 2710 that were built for World War Two. She was present at the Normandy D-Day invasion of WW2 and the only ship to return to Normandy under her own power for the anniversary 50 years later. She is also the only ship to steam directly out of the navy reserve "mothball" fleet under her own power. She is powered by two watertube boilers and a massive 2-1/2 story tall 2500hp triple expansion steam engine that was used for the filming of the 1997 James Cameron film "Titanic".

The Jeremiah O'Brien is one of only a handful of museum ships that still operate and one of even fewer steam-powered museum ships still operating. She is also the last Liberty Ship in original configuration.
One might ask, "What about the bottom half of the bearing?" Well, to remove that is a task that will take considerable rigging to undertake. AT MINIMUM it would involve disconnecting the connecting rods, eccentric rods, and lifting the 40,000lb crankshaft several feet in the air to make removing the lower bearing halves possible. They are square-shaped shells like the top half, so "rolling out" like on a more modern engine is simply not possible. We determined the lower half is serviceable and will perform many tens of thousands of miles reliable service before needing attention, at which time all the mains will be addressed at the same time. "Why not re-babbitt the bearing?" It was determined the bearing would be serviceable again with some scraping and shim removal to adjust clearance.
The S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien is an amazing piece of history and I highly encourage you to go aboard. One can purchase tickets to go on one of her several cruises a year, or visit her at the dock in San Francisco where she is open to the public. They do also steam her at the dock once a month.

"HULL: 30” LOA, beam 7’6” max, 6’6” WLw single chine all steel construction. Bare hull weight +/- 2,700 #. Total weight with steam plant about 8-9,000#...
PLANT: Wood or oil burning boiler, 50 s.f. Roberts type with forced draft fan.
Working pressure 175#, cruise pressure, +/- 150 PSI, 550deg F superheat. Propeller was 24” x 28”, ran max 430 RPM.
This gave me an HONEST 7 KNOT SPEED....
The bottom line—there were only a couple of boats in our large group that could out run me. I think this was the result of a number of factors: easy running hull, good free steaming boiler (forced draft and big grate) and superheating, and last but certainly not least of all, an engine capable of high running speed with superior steam distribution due to the “long legged” construction. As any engineering reader will discover, the shorter the connecting rod, the poorer will be the valve events and obviously the longer the rod, the better. This is because the connecting rod distorts the position of the piston in relative its angular position of the crankshaft. I assume that this also holds with the position of the valves in their travel. Bottom line here is, the “taller” the engine, the better. Anyone who would deny the engineering is a fool at best and dishonest at worst.

I saw it on an online auction site and it immediately caught my eye as being unusual. Unfortunately, there was embarrassingly little information other than it was a Triple Expansion Steam Engine made by Sullivan of New York. After speaking to an employee of the auction company, the best info I could get was general outside dimensions and an estimation of the stroke. Through the photos I was able to identify a valve which I had a similar example at home. By measuring the valve I had at home I had something to use as a scale in the photographs and from there was able to estimate the size and of the engine, especially the stroke, and cylinder dimensions judging by cylinder covers and past experience. Fueled by my lacking knowledge of Sullivan (they built the engine for the steam yacht Cangarda, and possibly many more yachts), and my steam-related psychosis, I pulled the trigger and a while later she arrived at my door.
So here for your viewing pleasure, and celebration of 3,000 subscribers, is my fumbling through some sort of unboxing and product review... A Sullivan triple expansion steam engine bores and stroke of 4 + 6-1/2 + 11 x 7-1/2"
My plans for the engine? A fast launch between 30-40' long with a high-pressure watertube boiler that will be capable of firing with liquid and solid fuel. Only time and money right?!?
Using the PLAN formulae (HP= PLAN/33,000... P=Mean Effective Pressure L=Stroke measured in feet (x2 if double-acting) A=Area of piston N=Number of Revolutions Per Minute), here are some estimated horsepower figures at different pressures and RPM:
@ 250psi (M.E.P. of 150psi on High Pressure cyl) and 300 RPM = 64 HP... @ 400 RPM = 85 HP
@ 300psi (M.E.P. of 180psi on High Pressure cyl) and 300 RPM = 77 HP... @ 400 RPM = 102 HP
@ 400psi (M.E.P. of 240psi on High Pressure cyl) and 300 RPM = 103 HP... @ 400 RPM = 137 HP

You caught that bad boy as the storms were moving in. Ever notice when a storm is approaching, the winds pick up? We call that the gust front. There can be occasional rotation, but not all that often. You were in the right place at the right time, so great catch! Tornadoes will be much stronger and tend to develop on the back edge, usually the SW corner of a severe t-storm. They, obviously, will be much stronger. Your gustnado, sometimes referred to as a land spout, won't be too damaging.

The final step in the process that isn't shown is to use the drawn graph to calculate the average pressure within the cylinder (P) during the up and down stroke. That will go into the P.L.A.N. formulae where HP=PLAN/33,000
Indicated Horsepower=PxLxAxN divided by 33,000 (the number foot pounds per minute determined by James Watt)
P= Pressure (average in pounds per square inch PSI)
L= Length of stroke in feet (up and down = one revolution. i.e. 3" stroke up and down = 6" or 0.5ft)
A= Area of the piston in square inches
N= Number of strokes per minute
This process is done so the engineer can adjust the valves to balance the horsepower on the up and down stroke of the cylinders. It is also done to balance between all cylinders on multi-cylinder engines (in this case a three-cylinder triple-expansion) to ensure they are all making the same amount of horsepower.

Gondola was built in 1859 to carry passengers from the Furness Railway and Coniston Railways.
Retired in 1936, she eventually was sold into private hands and turned into a houseboat, later falling into disrepair.
In the 1970's she was acquired by a group of enthusiasts who lovingly restored her and re-launched her in 1980, resuming passenger service on Coniston Water.
She has a steel hull LOA: 90' 0", Beam: 15' 0", Draft: 4' 10", Displacement: 90000 lbs. Spoon bow, counter stern, midships varnished saloon. 86 seats, wheel steering, serpent figurehead.
Her boiler is a locomotive type Built 1979 by W. Bertram & Sons Ltd. at South Shields. Fuel is very "eco friendly" compressed sawdust logs, steam pressure 150 psi.
Her engine is a vee twin, 7" + 7" cylinders with an 8" stroke. It has slip-eccentric valve gear, and is non-condensing. The exhaust is directed up the funnel and provides draft for the fire, much like a steam locomotive.

I will be making patterns for a piston valve cylinder (3" bore, 4" stroke) that will then replace the slide valve High Pressure cylinder on the Fred Semple 3"+5"x4" 10hp vee-compound as well as the cylinder on the Fred Semple 5hp single cylinder engine. We have one of the 5hp engines running the genset on my father's 40ft steamboat "Persistance"
This is a project to fix a problem that doesn't really exist and is more of an engineering, patternmaking, and machining exercise in preparation for a much larger project in the future...

John's account of the voyage:
"Trip of a Lifetime"
...My wife dropped me off on Friday afternoon (April 23rd, 2010) at the dock, and I spent the afternoon settling in and helping stow things away, lots of miscellaneous item and equipment that need to be put out of the way to be ready for sea. Soon asleep in anticipation of an early start at 0200 This was however not to be. Henry worked all Friday and to about 0500 installing new power supplies for the engine room computer controls for the boiler. We then fired up the boiler and departed the dock about 0530
We headed for the Golden Gate at cruise speed of about 8 knots, about 180 rpm of the main engine. When we arrived near the bridge, the outgoing tide that we had planned for with the 0200 original plan had turned into a flood tide with some confused currents near and under the bridge that required some fancy steering maneuvers to keep a straight course. After clearing the bridge, we headed to sea for a ways, then turned South, keeping to the established shipping lanes for the whole trip, all on automatic pilot, with minor corrections in the Santa Barbara Channel to give greater clearance to offshore oil rigs.
The trip from "out the gate" was a bit on the rough side, with swells 6-9 ft at 11-13 seconds with wind waves, and later on, lots of whitecaps, coming from the NW, we had this quartering following sea for the whole voyage. A fair way along before Pt Conception, we had the first of a couple of boiler control problems, losing the fire for at least an hour, which we spent wallowing in the troughs of the waves, rolling an estimated 20 degrees or so, with various items sliding back and forth on the cabin sole, including tables and chairs. We subsequently corralled them and lashed them together. I braced myself against the wall of the pilothouse sitting on the sole and braced my feet against one of the chairs to hold them against the wall. I was not on watch at the time. After a time we were able to restart the burners and get steam up and get back on our course; curiously, all the while we were without power and drifting along, we were very nearly still on our set course. When we got past Pt Conception, the seas moderated a good bit with much more comfortable conditions as to pitching and rolling. By the time we reached the Santa Barbara Channel the seas were quite calm, and the weather foggy, continuing to our arrival at San Pedro, arriving at the breakwater at about 0130. By the time we docked, it was about 0145 After docking and tying up, the scene was a bit surreal; the lighting from the port operations lit up the entire area with the sky glowing; I think a person with good night vision could have read a newspaper by the ambient light.

Eugene: Specialist on controls and burners serving in this capacity and as deck crew

John York: Deck crew and engineering assistant
As I remember, I stood two four hour watches and one 8 hour watch on the trip.
Now for the machinery; All the original machinery, over one hundred years old, functioned near perfectly; the main engine, a Sullivan triple expansion of 300-350HP ran flawlessly. The thrust bearing was watched very closely for temp. I sold the boat a force feed lubricator to provide extra lubrication to the shoes. The Sullivan feed pump ran flawlessly throughout the trip, providing all the feed water to the boiler; this is the pump that my shop machined the entirely new water cylinder casting. We had a bit of trouble with the air pump, which pumps water and air out of the condenser; the pump stopped working about three times, was easily restarted the first two. When it stopped the last time, I was on watch, Steve and I tried to re start it; I finally determined that the valve motion was sticking from lack of oil; we gave it a shot of oil and it started right up and ran beautifully for the rest of the trip. The only real troubles with the plant were from the automated burner controls; these problems were later eliminated with some more fine tuning of the burners and controls.
The next leg of the journey was to San Diego, then Ensenada; there it was loaded on a ship for the trip to the Panama Canal, then Florida to be unloaded, then up the East coast to it's home port, in Maine. The reason for the shipboard trip was to spare the machinery the wear and tear of the very long voyage...

Hull- A 26" fiberglass "surf boat" replica made by Mosquito Enterprises of Everett, Washington.
Engine- An original New Old Stock U.S. Navy Model "K" compound steam engine. Piston valve for the High Pressure (HP) piston, and "D" Slide valve for the Low Pressure (LP) piston. Stevenson Link reverse gear. The engine transmits power through a 1.5:1 ratio planetary gear setup to slow the engine and increase propeller speed (hull limits propeller diameter, and this engine being VERY large for this boat has a lot of power to give).
Boiler- A diesel-fired Babcock-Wilcox (B&W) style watertube boiler of approximately 100sqft heating surface.

"Peristance" is a 40ft long steel steamboat my father built next to my parent's house in Lake Tahoe over the course of 13 years.
She is powered by a Doty Compound built in Ontario, Canada circa 1909 and a "Worthington" style watertube boiler built by John York of St. Helena, California circa 1991.
We steam Persistance in the California Delta year-round and try to get her our almost every weekend. We burn wood, and really really old vegetable oil. Her steam plant is a closed-loop condensing system, so we are capable of safely steaming in salt or fresh water.

"UNO" was built on Lopez Island, Washington, in 1894. The engine is a Stewart Turner 6A compound and the boiler is an Ofeldt style watertube. Fuel is wood or diesel.

Construction consists of 2" channel iron and a little but of plate steel for cart frame, 1-1/4" ntp pipe for axles turning on 1"ntp pipe for "bearings", galvanized nails for "axle retainers," axles welded directly to 8" drum brake drums for wheels, removable "hopper" frame made from steel "t-post" fence posts and lining is galvanized steel roofing/siding tin, 18" gauge rails made from steel "t-post" fence posts, "ties" and rail cuplings made from same posts or reebar or whatever...
Rail sections are 8-10' long and include turns and even a switch. They are easily moved around to different parts of the yard as needed. Found lumber serves as shims or temporary "roadbed." Derailments are not uncommon given the temporary nature of the rail placement, but not impossible to remedy as it only takes another fence post to lever the cart back on the track.

Stephen Rademaker is on the footplate operating the traction engine and blowing the whistle.
Traction engine is a 1915 Nichols and Shepard 70-20 and has a brand new ASME code boiler, courtesy of Jonas Stutzman.
These whistles are incredibly rare. I polished the brass bell on this one from a rough casting to a mirror finish.

Instead of breaking your screws and having to drill them out or make a new hole, simply try some wax on the threads to allow them to go in smoothly without binding.
